Fans’ Micro Blogs Disagree. Steven Ma Not Afraid To Take On World Cup. TVB Dispatches Ghost Writer Into Battlefield.

The 2010 June World Cup is already an attention getter but TVB is not idle, either. It has decided to once again dispatch its Lucky General, Steven Ma, into the battlefield to lead his Ghost Writer series (aka Pu Song Ling) based on Liao Zhai stories against World Cup. But Steven Ma fans complained online that TVB once again chose their idol to do battles, and to have him once again bite the bullet. Turn out that Ma Zai has prior experience of going head to head with World Cup. In 2002, “Where the Legend Begins”, a series he was in, though battling World Cup still managed to draw in impressive ratings; hence Steven comforted his fans on his weibo* that this second time around he still got 'it' as he has every confidence in his series.

As the male lead for the 1st quarter highest rated series, A Watchdog Tale, Steven will once again don the battle armor to pit against World Cup. The recent grapevine had Steven’s Ghost Writer airing right after Sisters in Pearl commencing June 7, which also happens to be the battle time for Word Cup, hence the heated discussions among fans online. On one hand, there were fans berating TVB for choosing Ma Zai to bite the bullet, and that whenever a difficult battle arises, it always dispatches him there. On the other hand, there were fans who think it is because Ma Zai was a “Lucky General” that’s why TVB dispatches him to this battlefield, in hopes of elevating ratings; hence, they should all unite to cheer Ma Zai on. "Ga Yao!"

Seeing his fans disparate opinions, Ma Zai wrote a blog entry*. (Steven did post a weibo entry but it is not the message written by this reporter hence not going to translate something that Steven did not even write let alone post.)

Actually Steven fans should not be too overly concerned because Ma Zai can be considered TVB’s Lucky General, plus Ma Zai has prior experience pitting against World Cup. His 2002 WTLB garnered impressive ratings for TVB - its average rating was well over 30 points, and was one of the highest rated series in its year; its ratings were not unduly eroded by WC. So it had to be that TVB thinks highly of Ma Zai thus decided to give him another opportunity to flex his muscles. As to whether he will win this battle this time around? Will have to wait and see if this series has the goods to entice!

TN: When rumors of Ghost Writer being slotted to air in the lower half of the year (June-July) first surfaced in early April, other fans rejoiced but my suspicious antenna instantly shot up to its highest alert, no way TVB would be so 'nice' towards Steven so I googled World Cup's schedules and sure enough they overlapped with Ghost Writer's timeslot. I brought that info to Steven-ma.org for discussions, which later spilled over onto sm baidu and sm weibo.

Steven asked weibo fans which series they prefer airing first on tv:-
Clamine (Tamaya) weibo response:

Tamaya: What Steven actually wrote in his weibo is what I have posted previously in Steven Ma AF Thread:
*Seeing how much thoughts you all expend on my behalf, I am truly touched. Frankly, 4th brother* I have never minded how other people treat me. What fear there is, is the fear that I am the one at fault. If not, then why fear anything else? What’s there to worry? Life is like that, can’t expect to have the whole world’s approval. Only hope that before the eyes are shut (died) there are no unfulfilled wishes, then at least can depart with no regrets! (Mutual sharing of thoughts) link
----------------------------------
Tamaya AF310
Is this what they call "double" talk? Double back to back dispatching of his series overseas! Double (three if not for SITS overseas dispatch) back to back dispatching of his series to graveyard New Year's time slots! Now double dispatching his series to battle World Cup? "Lucky General" or "Not welcome in homes" (per Ms. Lok's label) , Whatever! Just meaningless labeling. And about TVB thinking highly of Steven's series? Yeah right, who are they kidding? :tricky:

eta:
Note: Steven never said he is unafraid to take on World Cup. In fact, he did not comment on PSL or World Cup at all when this article was posted online. The said reporter put words into Steven's mouth. The above Steven's weibo message was what he wrote right before this article came out having read his fans' angry comments on GW's timeslot.

weibo 2010 SM grateful to fans

2010-4-26 02:57
Seeing how much thoughts and efforts you all put in on my behalf, I am truly touched. Frankly, 4th brother (Steven) has never minded how other people treat myself. What fear there is, is the fear that I am the one at fault. If not, then why fear anything else? What’s there to worry? Life is like that, can’t expect to have the whole world’s approval. Only hope that before the eyes are shut (died) there are no unfulfilled wishes; then at least can depart with no regrets! (mutual sharing!)

Last year I filmed a Qing dynasty series, Pu Song Ling. It was exhausting but I was very happy and very satisfied. A good script is what every actor dreams of. I've encountered some in the past. Last year also encountered Pu Song Ling. A good script, not only its characters are well written and exciting, but that the whole interweaving of characters and plots in its storyline must be intricately written too, as to be rationale yet at the same intriguing. Choi Shu (Producer Leung Choi Yuen) and Siu Tung (screenwriter Ng Siu Tung) have accomplished that, and we have given our best. So long everybody enjoys it, does not matter when it would air.

What else can Steven say but be his gracious self. But I like the fact that Steven hinted at being mistreated in his "I've never minded how people treat me. " That says volume to me. Must be so frustrating to him.

2010 April Fans lambasted TVB for Ghost Writer's timeslot against WC

Tamaya: Figures! Of course, TVB will air Steven's series against the World Soccer Games which will last through the month of June!  And to have it go head to head with the most awaited series of the year with arguably the most popular onscreen partners. Fungyi in MOL

(eta 4/27/2010: News report: Baidu SM fans have been lambasting TVB for mistreating Steven's series again)

Call me paranoid, but seems to me that TVB too often tries to sabotage Steven's series, if it's not released overseas then it would air in unfavorable time slots and now this against 2 tough competitors. In past interviews, both Steven and Fala had expressed high hopes of getting an award for their roles in Pu Song Ling, guess TVB is not going to make it easy for Steven given the tough competition for ratings.

Sorry, just gotten vent!

Despite the unfavorable timing, we just have to believe on the fact that if the series is good, people will watch it.[..]Doesn't sound like TVB is favoring Steven and setting him for success... hope I am wrong on this.[..]
If the timeslot remains true, that is just so unfortunate... Just hoping for the best scenario. What's more, isn't Steven tie to another 3 yr with TVB which means this kind of treatment will pretty much stay the same until contract is over? How come Steven is more "recognized" in Mainland China/Overseas than in HK? I suppose he cannot take any other jobs without the consent of TVB which definitely stagnate his presence and career. [..]
Maybe posting and voicing in tvb blog about this may make a squeak and in hopes to move mountains about this situation and of course to let TVB management know the full support and backing of Steven.
*****************************************************
Tamaya: But people who would have watched it will not because of better (to them) tv program especially one that comes only once every 4 years. Have you watched Where the legend begins? A much loved series among its fans. In fact, Mainland China fans called it a classic, but did you know it had dismal ratings in Hong Kong because TVB used it to combat World Cup. If PSL's timeslot is accurate then this will be Steven's 2nd series sacrificing ratings to go head to head with World Cup. The timing of a series plays a very important role in garnering high ratings. A good series needs assistance from effective marketing and good timing for it to showcase its full potential.

To me, ever since Steven's unexpected popularity from Safe Guards making his the most successful comeback, TVB tried to curb his popularity from soaring further. Ostensibly billed as the first male lead but in reality he was not; has his series released overseas back to back (besides Sunny Chan, what other first line actors have his series released overseas so often), has two series in unfavorable time slot, and now Pu Song Ling, which btw Steven has high hopes of getting an award. Why did TVB have PSL pitted against such stiff competition. Is someone afraid that psl would do to Steven's popularity what Safeguards had done prior? Made me wonder why? I've checked the world soccer cup schedule program and there are many matches to be held at 8:30 pm throughout June which will definitely clash with PSL.

If PSL is aired in this time slot, I really don't have high hopes for its ratings. Feel so bad for Steven now. Only yesterday he posed the question to his fans on which series his fans most want to watch. Most said PSL.

[..]Yeah, very disappointed in PSL timeslot. Doesn't matter if PSL's ratings beat Mystery of Love (RL and Tavia's long awaited series) itself, it must have ratings over 30 points to be considered for awards. And PSL has two very tough competitors - WC and MOL. Also, usually the ratings for  8:30 pm timeslot are usually lower than the 9:30 pm timeslot. Talking about which, how come Steven's series seldom get aired in the 9:30 pm timeslot if ever? Why?

Steven's weibo today
Seeing how much thoughts and efforts you all put in on my behalf, I am truly touched. Frankly, 4th brother (Steven) has never minded how other people treat myself. What fear there is, is the fear that I am the one at fault. If not, then why fear anything else? What’s there to worry? Life is like that, can’t expect to have the whole world’s approval. Tamaya: I felt so bad when I read his weibo entry. He must have read the baidu thread of PSL clashes World Cup.

Just wish that Steven's series is not put in a tough position that may jeopardize its ratings. Wish that his series is given the same support as the other artistes'. That his series is showcased instead of been pushed to back burners.

************************************************************
ChiK888 on 26 Apr 2010 - 06:04 AM, said:Ratings-wise – I am not too concerned about this in relation to the aforementioned scheduled broadcast of PSL against the World Cup and the FungYi detective series? [..]Though rather simplistic to say, I always believe that quality is more important that quantity…Besides being an overseas Steven fan enables me to enjoy his TV series in its entirety unlike HK viewers who tend to switch on and off (this I noticed whilst recently vacationing in HK).[..]Let us just appreciate Steven’s acting and TV series and not worry about other things…afterall, when his TVB contract does expire….who knows but we may never see Steven onscreen again.
************************************************************
Tamaya:
Chik888, thanks for dropping by.
The only reason why some of us fans are concerned about PSL's ratings is because we want Steven to be able to win the best actor award this year convincingly backed up by PSL's good ratings and good reviews. We are confident in Steven's performance, and given his and Fala's high hopes for PSL, we are also confident in it being a quality series. The only uncertain and uncontrollable variable is the ratings. We don't want the ratings to be in anyway compromised for the very reason that PSL was not showcased to its fullest potential due to unfavorable scheduling. Steven has already more than his share of having his series being mistreated. We don't want to have to say this in regrets again: That PSL's ratings could have been so much better if not for it being impacted by WC. Just like we have this lingering regrets that maybe AWT's rating could have been so much better if not for it being aired during the New Year, or that TCG2's ratings could have been so much better if not for it being shown on CNY, or The sweetness of the salt's could have been so much better if not for it being released overseas first and aired right after the blockbuster RB.

If not for a good chance of fulfilling his long time dream of triumphantly holding that best actor award in his hand, I am pretty sure Steven would not have renewed his contract. He is not getting the recognition and support from tvb management anyway, not to mention working at menial wages. Without TVB backing he might not have recognition either, but at least according to him, when in his previous freelancing he earned three times more in a year than he did at TVB.

Why does this weibo sentence of his sadden me: "I've never minded how other people treat me....Only hope that before the eyes are shut (died) there are no unfulfilled wishes; then at least can depart with no regrets! " Most Steven fans and I couldn't care less about ratings or tvb awards per se if not for the fact that winning that award means a lot to Steven.

The schedules of 10 WC matches will clash with PSL. In other words, 10 out of PSL's 25 episodes (40% of total) will clash with WC. which mean viewers will probably just forgo watching the whole series, why even bother watching when 40% of it will clash with your viewing of WC?

The sad thing is, Steven will probably don an unconcerned face mask to the public when questioned about the threat of WC to PSL.

******************************************************
AF#309 Tamaya:
Holly Molly! A snooping reporter having read fans complaints about PSL clashing with World Cup reported on it. Luckily it is objectively written. It is now way passed my bedtime so will wait until tomorrow to translate. This is good publicity to Steven fans' cause, at least TVB knows we fans are onto its scheme. The report indicated that there were two differing fans opinions - one side sees Steven as a sacrificial lamb; the other sees him as rating guarantee. I'm of the former.
Related  news 2010 SM Fans Irked at Ghost Writer's WC timeslot  I'm so glad a reporter publicized this unfair situation of Steven getting hit twice with World Cup's competition. The snooping reporter who published this must be a Steven sympathizer.

**********************************************************
Sneezer: I would have to say putting PSL into the June time is a deliberation on TVB part to hold him back then to "support" him. It is too coincidental that the previous Steven's series were also landed on "unfavorable" timeslot and yet why wouldn't TVB put it in normal time to further demonstrate how much greater his potential could have been. It is just so convenient and politically correct to say b/c he is of such "high caliber" and thus only use his series during such time can offset what otherwise would be greater lost. I am glad the reporter published this point out for the public awareness and have the people truly decide for themselves what kind of organization TVB is operating. What can't ATV be more competitive...
***********************************************************

Leba: And after reading Steven's ge yan ( dunno how to translate it) for the past 3 days, I cannot agree with Tamaya more that Steven does feel affected to some extent about PSL being aired in such a competitive slot. He's probably just looking hopeful and dun want his fans to be too affected by it. But like what he said today, about not always reaping what you sow, I think he does feel to some extent he's not being treated very fairly by the company. Just that Steven being the Steven we know, has decided to look at things on the bright side. I really hope PSL's ratings would rocket such that those people in TVB who are directly involved in depriving Steven would just stop doing such unfair things to him anymore.
*************************************************************

Tamaya: I would translate ge yan as maxims, aphorism, adage etc. How can he not be disappointed? He wants to a best actor award bad, and PSL is his best bet to even get close to it, but now its ratings are compromised even before it airs. Like the adage goes, for things to succeed; time, people and place must line up. Well, time is definitely out of sync here. Sorry to be a damper, but I really don't have high hopes for PSL's ratings.

***********************************************************

Akazukin: Actually, not only PSL are being complained of having to meet World Cup, MOL's fans worry that it has to meet World Cup too. No matter how good the series is, the mindset is that it will be affected by World Cup in one way or another. Besides, TVB has mytv now, whoever that misses an episode or two can go back to TVB website to watch them. I guess time will progress to maybe incorporate mytv hit counts into the assessment of rating system. There should be a need to it because people who watch from mytv are highly likely not to have watched from TV. I guess that also maybe one of the reason why ratings for series are so low these days. Previously average ratings used to be 30-33. Now any rating passing 30 marks is considered to be doing quite well.

Honestly, I wasn't really looking forward to PSL before because I am not really a fan of fantasy series from TVB. Somehow PSL reminds me of Dark Tales, which was interesting yet was a bit too sad for my taste. But then, I also hope all go well. On the other hand, I sorta think PSL may actually have a better chance against MOL because PSL seems to be the genre that housewives will watch while MOL seems like a genre that youngsters watch, especially with fungyi as the popular idols. But June is an exam period so I don't know whether they will be allowed to watch MOL. Anyway, I guess it's too early to speculate. If there is nothing that we can do about it, might as well just enjoy the show and not concerned about the ratings.

I can understand that we are all eager for our idols to get the big awards. But if RB2 is going to air this year, there won't be likely chance that any series can compete against RB2 during the awards. The reason not being it was highly anticipated series, but if we count Lee Tim Shing + Cheung Wah Biu (he is the writer for RB2 right?) + the casts + the fan base, it sounds like a fail-proof series to me. The success rate is probably like that to HOG/MR. So I will say if RB2 gets to air this year, we should be prepared that no other series can really get the big awards, unless of course a surprise comes out, which we know didn't happen in MR year anyway.

2003 SM filmed a skin care commercial

April 25,2003
Mainland China is a hazardous area infected with SARS. However, Steven recently went to Guangzhou to film a commercial without fear. Although it was only a two-day trip, the filming process was tormenting, Steven had to keep washing his face and had to film the commerical in the (artificial) rain. But, this commercial had proved Steven's skin in good condition.

This commerical's production undergoes a serious procedure. The organiser specially invited a Taiwanese commercial director who comes all the way from Japan. The first day of filming took place at the entrance of an exhibition centre in Guangzhou --- a place which was yet to be opened to the public. Two fire engines were also used to create the artificial rain in order to have a romantic ambience. Steven also followed the director's instructions, showing professionalism throughout the filming process.

Steven had to exercise various facial expression. Whenever it's rest time in between filming, the thoughtful filming crew will prepare distilled water for Steven to clean his face.

Series SITS discussions (2)

Some of Steven fans are quite literary-inclined too. I enjoy reading their reviews and opinions on Steven's series. Like this one written by 桔子.

akazukin: First time seeing someone liking the ending more than the beginning. Though I enjoy the screentime and the acting from the last episode, I was rather different from what I first preferred.

Tamaya: As a Steven fan, I totally can see where she's coming from. She likes the ending because Steven owned the last scene with his outstanding performance. The ending was bs to me, but I love the last 2 scenes because finally I got my belated big dose of Steven's acting. Like I said, the progression of the series distressed me, but the last 2 scenes captivated me. One major reason why our perspectives on the series differ so greatly is because our perspectives departed from two disparate points of view, from a Steven fan's pov and from Tavia fan's pov. You've no idea how very 'painful' it was for Steven fans to watch the whole series from beginning to the end: like how this Suet/Yuen fan wrote: "Do you how very painful my heart was at that moment to watch that scene when you wallowed in drunkenness (你自责、你内疚,你用酒精来麻痹你自己,你知道那个时候我有多心痛嘛,应该说你是自食其果吗? If interested, see spoiler for her lengthy analysis.

Akazukin: Here's my response to the critique (on JY's crying): The thing is Ji Yuen was not really crying in front of anyone since he was alone in the temple and Tavia was at the other side of the closed door, unable to see his tears. Moreover, he was thinking that he was at the verge of death, he was sick, so someone at that stage probably wouldn't have the energy nor self-collection to worry about the Chinese male pride that "men shouldn't shed tears".

Tamaya: High 5! My very reply to her comment.

on the last episode in Sits

( disagree with her: a person's self- preservation is naturally at the utmost in time of peril, nothing to do with his love for Suet)

Ji Yuen's tears

I agree! 。。。。 。。 。。

Series SITS discussions (1)

Akazukin: Or maybe Steven can move his style of series from mostly romance based (which I believe require more imagination space so his romance with the female lead is more believable) to mostly family based or comedy or just life experience series........ Actually, I think he very well has the talent, just that his talent for romance should not be wasted either until the day he gets married.

Tamaya: Steven is excellent as a romantic male lead.
The slight turn of his head, the expressive glance of his eyes, the beginning of a slow smile,
perfection! How many hearts have fluttered at that look. And a bamboo flute looks just right in his hands.

capturing of Ji Yuen's rare smiles.AF1509
a hint of a smile or a toothy grin, a twitch of his lips or a lift of a corner, a beaming smile, indulgently or jovially, a wistful smile, a helpless smile, a rueful smile or a wry smile, a bitter smile, a polite smile, a disdainful smile or a sneer, Steven performed them all with subtlety.

Chp1
Happy, artless smile of a man in love
Posted ImagePosted Image

Chp2
The twitching of a polite & formal smile
Posted Image

The spreading, happy smile of a child at hearing his revered elder's approval and concern.
His joy shines through his crescent eyes.

Akazukin: his smile is burdened with problems he kept in his heart. It was such a child like smile, like you said, and it shows the feelings of a son he has facing his godfather, but the smile seemed burdened deep inside. It isn't a carefree smile that we have seen from him in other times

Posted ImagePosted Image

The indulgent, helpless smile of a son fussed over by his mother.
Posted Image

The side-glance and wry smile of a man at hearing the poetic truth in Hin's statement.
Hin: Some reasons just can't be explained. I promise you. (not to let SS know)
Posted Image

An enigmatic smile, difficult to pin down, maybe a smidgen of irony & sadness combined? Probably at his own momentary mental weakness & pathetic situation that he, a most sane & pragmatic anti-smuggling official, could be reduced to actually spying on those two before him; all because he has inexplicably fallen for Sing Suet, a smuggler's daughter, no less. The irony of his circumstance is most definitely not lost on him.

Akazukin: I think for that moment, he was more concerned of Sing Suet's well being than to think about what he has become peeking like that. I think he felt thankful to Ting Hin but sad that there is nothing else he can do for Sing Suet, sad that he has to rely on Ting Hin to take care of Sing Suet. He can no longer stand by his side like he used to in the Tao village.

I deeply enjoyed reading your analysis of JY's smile. He surely had different smiles in one day. And your description is totally how I felt when I watched the scene too. I felt that the only time Ji Yuen was able to smile happily without burden was only in the span between him finding out that Sing Suet was still alive and had Ting Hin providing a roof for her and finding out his godfather has been a corrupted official all this while. The scene where he visited the Wu is included. His smile when he reported himself to his mom is an excited one. He probably went around the house garden partially to try his luck if he can bump into Sing Suet. Of course, beautiful childhood memory would also welcomed him at that time. So we have him smiling in a good mood and excitement.

When he really found Sing Suet and the chance to talk to her after the dinner, I think he has abundant hope that Sing Suet will have positive reaction hearing his confession. He probably think Sing Suet thought that the love he showered her during their time in Tao village is fake and only his method of completing his mission. Do you think Ji Yuen purposely make use of Sing Suet to achieve his goal? (Something like Ron's character in EU - he likes her but he is together with her to achieve his goal) Or is it just a slip of events on how he made use of her? As in he never thought of using her when he chooses to be with her but chances that this relationship gave him made him slip?

Ep 3-1
Posted Image
Down the childhood memory lane recalling the good times.
Filled with anticipation at seeing Sing Suet again - Yuen's strides are quick and confident as he returns from his quick exploratory lookout for Suet; his smile bright as the sun instantly dazzled Ting Yim. Take note of the tinkling background music (usually reserved to announce the long anticipated appearance of an ancient China beauty) as he stops before her, spellbinding her with his wide grin.

3-2
Suet/Yuen's encounter at Hin's house
Posted Image Posted Image
After what must have been the longest ever dinner, Yuen finally goes looking for Suet. It was not happenstance that Suet bumps into him. He must have searched high and low for her after being released from the dinner. Anticipation realized – his face lits up; his heart leaps at the sight of her fueled by an upsurge of uncontrollable joy pumping it. He is so happy to see her, incredibly so.
“Sing Suet” he utters her name with much tenderness. “How have you been?”

Posted Image
Sensing the coldness emanating from Suet, he quickly tempers his smile and collects his emotions. Wearing a conciliatory smile, he says: “Don't worry, I'll not bring up the past.” His sidelong glances, blinking eyelids and slight pauses all underlined his apprehension at Suet's responses. Suddenly he does not know what to say.

Posted Image
So with his heart still hanging precariously on his sleeve and his much diminished smile bravely hanging on to his face, he asks expectantly: “You've heard what I said?' He wants to make sure that she has indeed heard him. However, whatever hope he has had of her softening towards him is quickly and unequivocally dashed when she opens her mouth to rebuke him.

Posted Image
Suet's lashing instantly snuffs off that brave little smile and kills off what little hope he has had. His face shuttered, his eyes dimmed and his smile vanished. The impassive mask slips into place on his face.

2004 suits ad

Steven's news on January 5, 2004
Steven Ma is a very traditional minded person, so the Chinese New Year and Winter Festival are very important to him. In the past, he had had time off for the New Year and this year is no exception, so he will be going to Hainan Island for five days holiday with some of his friends. He smiles: "I have decided that in April or June, I will apply for the Open University to study Chinese Sociology. Recently I have been reading some of the text books and they are making me rather numb, so I want to go and have some fun." As for work, Steven says that although his contract with TVB will be ending soon, he should be continuing it because he has had a good relationship with them in the past. He also hopes that he can start filming another series for TVB in April. At the moment he is negotiating several Mainland productions and earlier, he made an advertisement for a suit company.

He says: "As I didn't have any time in my schedules, I had to complete the shoot in one day and in the end I had to change into thirty suits in the space of eight hours and smiled so much that my jaw was stiff. Luckily the boss really liked it and insisted that I filmed their TV ad for them as well, so work will start in March. The two ads together had a seven-figure fee and the boss has offered me a lifetime's supply of suits, so if I film any modern series, they will sponsor my suits for me."
