Steven as presenter of the most favorite actress award in 2011 Most Favorite TV Commercial Awards

Fans couldn't contain themselves anymore about Steven's unflattering hairstyle so a thread has been started on baidu to let Steven know.   Steven is not very photogenic and looks better in person and on screen than in photos.  I wish he would jell out the bangs like he did when I saw him in person at his autograph signing session last year.  A fan who just met him at the recent HK Book Fair swore the hairstyle did not look all that bad in real life as it did on pictures. haha!

weibo 7/30 - physical disability

7/30 12:11  Yesterday helped a charity organization record the themesong for it activities. Energetic Eagle Drum Team is a band organized by a team of volunteer teachers.  The team members are all afflicted with different physical illness or disability, nonetheless, they all held a very positive attitude towards life.  Among them are young people and also the elderly in their 70s or 80s.  Their passion and expansiveness for life are that of a flying eagle;  truly worthwhile for me to learn!  Wishing them success for their upcoming activity, even more so, hope the government will pay more attention to the needy in society.

Sentinel episode 5

Sheung Hei is very bright, quick to grasp her uncle's underlying meaning.   Looking forward to Lau Kong's interaction with Steven.

Haha! obviously the trainees with the scarf on their heads did not shaved their heads. So weird looking. Poor Dor Bo ganged up by his fellow trainees.
Guess Ai Chun must be an anti-Qing insurgent, just what Hao Chong worried would happen with the imperial guard posts opened to Han people.

One pen ma: A yardstick in us all

source:  晴報
7/28/2011 (Thursday)
One pen Ma
Steven Ma

There is a yardstick inside everybody.
每個人也有把心中尺.

Humans by nature have a wishful appraisal of selves, things and people around them. This wishfulness will increase or decrease with passing years and experiences, likewise, the yardstick measurement will fluctuate according to one's present whims of likes and dislikes, of love and desires. Of course, regardless of how this wishfulness or measurement changes, so long it changes towards decency and positiveness, towards inner strength and self-reflection, they are all good.

But, often, people too easily use their yardsticks for outside measurement, imposing their own standards and desires on others, and then viewing selves as judges, their subconscious mixed with the power of consciousness to criticize other people, subsequently reaffirming their own existence worth and power. This kind of malevolent subconscious is especially evoked by people of comparatively weak willpower and low self-confidence.

Actually everybody experiences different life encounters, the so called cause and effect. How can everything be viewed from just one perspective to decide right or wrong, true or false? I have always believed in empathy! And also believe that only through empathy can one relate to other people's viewpoint of their plights, and to better comprehend the whole situation. So, next time when we use our inner yardstick to measure others, have we done some prior self-reflection? Or are we willing to remind ourselves: “How one conducts oneself in society is like looking into a mirror; don’t blithely apply your own beliefs/disbeliefs onto others.*"

weibo 7/29

7/29 12:48 Using these two idioms, "tiger forced to leap over the wall", and "dog cornered into a dead alley"  to describe Nip Dor Bo is not inappropriate.  To conduct one self, do not do things to the extreme, do not say things to the extreme. In everything, should leave a line, and this line, whether it's reserved for others or for oneself! Of course, if everybody can do this, perhaps the world will be more peaceful.

TN: Pretty sure it is Steven's response to his decision to leave TVB.  Few weeks Tsuiyiyi weibo this: To my friend,

Tabloid reports on Steven.

With its consecutive expose on Steven, wonder what 3-Week tabloid will come up with in its next publication?

The current 3-Week (vol 616)  has its headline heralding Steven's decision to leave the nest next July. One Mainland company even offers Steven a 12 millions 2 year package as enticement to  join them.  And that each episode's fee is 100.000 per series. And all the good stuff that seems too good to be true. re:report   (T or F?)   12,000,000 yuan for 2 years?  What's the catch?  There is no lunch in showbiz.

Three weeks ago, 3-Week vol 615 reported Steven to once again compete for TV king with Sentinel, calling him the dark horse.  It rehashes the same stuff that TVB has allegedly done to appease him and  to assist him in winning the tv king title.  The same stuff that is again reiterated in vol 616. Stuff such as: As host to Apprentice Chef, ice breaker dinner with Virginia Lok and the airing of Sentinel in a summer timeslot. (Notice that besides Links to Temptation, none of Steven's series is ever aired at 9:30 pm since signing the contract.)

Steven's weibo response is "So long you all enjoy the show, that's enough!"

In between vol 3-Week vol 615 and vol 616, Sudden 1-Week tabloid vol.834 also ran similar headline as vol 615 asserting that TVB is paving the way to TV King for Steven through Sentinel again listing the same stuff as the above 2 tabloids namely: Host to AP, ice-breaker dinner and Sentinel timeslot.  Tabloid reporters are so unoriginal and lazy in their reporting copying from one another.  That's why I didn't bother to translate the above 2 tabloids.

Well, with 3 Week vo l616's expose, there goes Steven's chance of winning this year TV king award, because I'm pretty Steven will not renew his contract.  What for?

3 Weekly : Steven Ma Disheartened, Leaving the Nest.

Reposting prohibited.

source: 3-Week tabloid
translator: Tamaya @steven ma fanblog

TVB siu sang are getting fewer and fewer, even Steven Ma, who has previously lambasted the company for arranging the broadcast of his series in unfavorable timeslot as cannon fodder, has decided to leave the nest when his contract ends in July next year.

The fact is that Steven has already penetrated the Mainland market; recently a Mainland producer wooed him with a 2-year 12 million (RMB?) contract to join his company; the fee for each episode per series is 100,000 yuan; compare that to tvb episode fee of 40,000 hkd; his fee is three times higher; very tempting indeed.  As to leaving the nest, Steven candidly says: “It’s true that many people have approached me; lots to discuss!” which implies his departure is imminent.

Lately Steven has been discontented with TVB, especially with the broadcast of his two series, Links to temptation and Seven Days in Life, being aired in cannon fodder timeslots, which, besides affecting their ratings may also affect his chance of winning the tv king award.

To placate him, TVB arranged to have his series, The Life and Times of a Sentinel, aired in the golden summer timeslot.*  Further it also tailor custom made for him a cooking program, Apprentice Chef. ** Earlier, TVB also arranged an ice breaker dinner to have Steven sit at the same table with Virginia Lok, who was rumored to be on bad terms with him.  Surely enough indication of tvb’s sincerity?

All these actions from TVB is just so that comes June next year when his contract terminates, hopefully, Steven will obediently renew his contract. Allegedly, recently TVB has been trying hard to get him to renew his contract but Steven has been dragging his feet. The fact is that Steven has already penetrated the Mainland market with his Ghost Writer, Where the Legend Begins, and his other ancient drama series. Last year airing of Ghost Writer in Mainland has also greatly heightened his popularity there.  Mainland companies frequently invited him for stage performances, thus, he has no worries for other outlets.

Recently, Tsui Siu Ming (HK tv series and film producer) who now focuses on Mainland, has had his eye on Steven’s well-received ancient look. He had wanted Steven in his upcoming October Mainland tv series*** but because of TVB’s harsh terms, Tsui rescinded his offer.  Consequently, Steven lost the opportunity to earn a 2 million (yuan) fee, which serves to reinforce his decision to leave the nest.

Tsui admitted candidly to this magazine: “I’d wanted to invite Steven to join in one of the big-scale productions in the nation, 建元风云忽必烈, (The Reign of Kublai Khan) collaborating with Hu Jun. But who knew, TVB’s terms and conditions will affect the future progress of the production. So the negotiation fell through. I feel helpless.” As to Steven’s decision to leave, Tsui expressed his welcome to him. “His image is good, and his other aspects also match my requirements. I want to use him, hopefully we can collaborate in the future.”

Allegedly, right now there are several production companies hoping to sign up  Steven in their company. Among them is one company that has offered a contract with extremely attractive terms and conditions, including shooting  one hundred tv episodes within a two-year period, each episode commanding 100,000 yuan, in a 2-year 12 million yuan package. In the interim, Steven is allowed to accept other jobs for side incomes; lots of freedom; very tempting indeed.

As to having a company offering an over 12 millions contract to him, Steven admitted to this magazine: “It’s true  there are lots of ongoing discussions. TVB siu sangs have always been in great demand. Many people have approached me but at the same time, the company has arranged lots of work for me to do too. Like this coming August, I will shoot Siu Ching jie’s modern series.”

As to his contract ending next year, he said: “It’s true my contract will end next year. What’s important is to have a happy collaboration. I’ve been in TVB for 18 years, have to thank Zang jie (Catherine Tsang). She has been my benefactor, without her there's no me. All these years, she has given me ample opportunities so no matter what happens in the future, I’ll always maintain a good relationship with the company."

 *******************************************
And btw, this reporter is a silent member of Steven-ma.org because 3 fans posts from there were printed on the tabloid too.

F1: What's the point of renewing the contract, he'll be back to square one.
F2: Whatever 4th Brother decides, and so long he is happy, I'll support him. F3: Wonder if 3 color will really treat him better, anyway  whatever his decision is, I will support.

TN:How do you feel about Steven leaving TVB for Mainland? What interest me most in this report is the Mainlaind series that was lost to Steven because of TVB's harsh terms? 2 millions not enough for Steven to accept the series?  What's with TVB?

sentinel episode 4

It was all Hao Chong's idea, now who would dare to contravene her order, and what officials would dare to go against their powerful boss, Evergreen. So can't blame the officials. Also I understand Hao Chong's her precaution against letting 'Chance' pick the imperial guards for her son, the Emperor. And who in their right mind would against her wishes. The country under the Manchus was still young, Ming uprising was still very much in the picture. As his imperial guard, an anti Qing person has assess to Hong Hei and do him harm. But of course, she does not have the power to go against the Emperor's edict.

Another enjoyable episode - exposing the real mastermind behind the rigging of the entrance exam, and how it was uncovered and brought to Hong Hei's attention.  This episode also highlighted the subtle intimation and double talk among the people in power.  In other to survive in such a political charge environment one must be ever alert and quick to change according to situation, quick to grasp opportunities and manipulate one's fortunes. If not then one can say goodbye to one's ambitions because of some power's capriciousness.  Again, beware of catering to a tiger who can raise you to the highest post and just as easily drop you to the lowest pit all the way to hell even death.

Enjoyable as the politics among the powers, the highlight for me is Dor Bo showing off his peking opera ability once again. Notice how Fuk Cheun's voice quickly faded away, and I think Kenneth dropped ball with his reaction when Dor Bor suddenly belted out his aria, maybe at least a start or a startle look, or a greatly amused smile, or some sort of obvious reaction instead of that fixed, amiable smile.and the appearance of not knowing what to make of Do Bo's singing.  Very awkward!

Sentinel episode 3 Sheung Hei and Dor Bo's chemistry

Katy Kung's weibo

For I've come to praise Sheung Hei and her tacit chemistry with Dor Bo.

I really love Sheung Hei's character -- so unlike the reserved females of her times.

She is fun, extrovert, audacious too and very sporting, and very impish.  But of course with a big cousin brother like Dor Bor to get her into troubles and an aunt who is quite open minded, no wonder her personality is quite tomboyish.  Kay did a praiseworthy job bringing her character to life.   While I'm at it, I so absolutely enjoyed watching Steven's kung fu moves, smoothly and gracefully done!  Also praiseworthy!

Good use of sidelong glances, knowing smile, covert sly smiles, pretentious posturing that was quite comical especially when complemented with Dor Bo's equally posturing of righteous outrage.  Their scene provoked a chuckle from me at watching their put on antics and eye signal.  And the other guy's obvious incomprehension only added to the comical effect.  And then there were Dor Bo and Sheung Hei's smugness and glee at pulling off their clever prank.

News: Steven Ma Disheartened, Leaving the nest

Sudden 1 Week tabloid just last wrote that TVB was laying the path for Steven to win TV King, this time 3 Weeks tabloid vol 616 exposes Steven is leaving the nest, so what next?  So take this news with a grain of salt.  But this rumor will definitely affect Steven's chance of being tv king this year or any year thereafter.

Salient points:
1) Steven rumored to leave the nest once his contract ends.

2) A Mainland artistes agency offers 12 million yuan 2-year package to Steven.  Will pay over 100,000 per episode for every series 3 times that of  tvb $40,000  per episode.   When asked, Steven says there are lots of negotiations going on.  He has had many offers from Mainland.

3) Steven's October China series fell through because according to its producer, TVB is playing hardball with them. Thus Steven lost the opportunity to earn 2 million yuan .

All these big sums of money boggled my mind.   Sound too good to be true, probably is.  Don't trust China Artistes Management company with their big talk, so Steven better watch out with all these too good to be true promises.

Sentinel episode 3

Episode 3:
Highlights:
1) Absolutely love the scene on Dor Bo’s drunkenly belting out Peking opera, and the flag show.Steven and Kenneth were both very dexterous with the flags and very entertaining to watch.

Here’s an old reports about them having only half an hour to learn how to sing Peking opera. old report But I guess in this scene only Dor Bo sang? Or did I hear wrong? Guess these two are boisterous drunks.

2) Steven was very nimble and graceful in his kung fu moves during the entrance exam. The fighting scenes could have been taken out of a wuxia series.

3) Grace and Christine’s performance were totally bad. No eye see. Plus they were not genteel or graceful at all in their posturing or movement and no subtlety in their speech. They were just modern women playacting in an ancient drama series. During production, to improve their Chinese, whoever spoke English at the set would be fined. What can viewers expect from this group of Gwai mui zai as concubines? Haiz!

Still think Power is miscast as Hong Hei.

4) The birds in the poster are not eagles, they are (rocs)

Steven said Catherine Tsang complains he tends to be overly talkative and loud when tipsy.  But he says he never get so drunk as to be inebriated.

Sentinel episode 2

Episode 2:

Jotting of thoughts:
The 2nd episode slows down slightly to set up for Steven to become an imperial guard.

- I like the chemistry between Do Bo and his much younger cousin sister, Sheung Hei, who obviously looks up to him as her hero. He is the leader and she's his adoring follower. The chemistry between Dor Bo and Sheung Hei was very enjoyable to watch. And Sheung Hei is a very likable and plucky girl sidekick to Dor Bo. Because of her gamine look, Sheung Hei fits right in with the guys.

the neighborhood protectors

- I especially like the scene where Ah Wong couldn't resist licking Dor Bo's face to display his immense joy. Steven said during the shoot, Ah Wong was so overjoyed at seeing him again that she couldn't stop licking him every time he got close to her. Thus this very incongruous scene whereby a runaway sick dog happily licked a stranger on the face not once but twice, what's the chance of that? So Steven improvised his line when he got licked. What to do? Even her owner couldn't repress her doggie instinct. Steven actually weibo his meeting with Ah Wong on the set whereby they were so excited at seeing each other again that they were almost inseparable on the set.  Also, notice how Ah Wong totally ignored Ji Ying, though supposedly it has been her pet for 17 years already.  Steven said that Ah Wong dislikes females and deliberately ignores them. Later in his weibo, (see above post) Uncle Choi reprimands Ah Wong for her lack of actor's ethic.

- The bickering scenes between Do Bo and Selena's Ji Yin were fun to watch too, but not all that special.

- I like Helen as Dor Bo's mom too. Like a "nui hap", no wonder her son, Dor Bo is so full of himself and youthful bravado, which can easily cross over to destructive youthful arrogance and actions, like when he and Sheung Hei beat up the Manchu guy, a very cowardly act, that.

- I even like the male narrator, he has such a rich and melodious voice and evoked a very historic documentary feel to the scenes.

- I still have to get use to Power's Hong Hei and Ching Hor Wai's Hao Chong. Their portrayals do not match their images in my mind, maybe because I have watched Cheng Dao Ming and Siqin Gaowa in Mainland tv series, Kangxi Dynasty. And must say the charcoal black eye liners and eye shadows on Hao Chong contrasted quite "horrifically" with her thick white wig.

Imo, Hao Chong's angry reprimand of Fuk Chuen comes across too fierce, too loud and pedestrian, with none of the restrain and controlled modulation of voice displayed so royally in Gaowa's performance. When one is filled with power and strength, one does not need to raise one's voice to make known one's displeasure or opinions. A look, a pause and a posture would have sufficed most royally. Ching's Hao Chong did not have the innate aristocracy and regal posturing born of power, self-control and ultra confidence.

The episode deliberately contrasted the somber, serious palace scenes vs the lively and noisy common people scenes. Imprisonment in the palace, relative freedom outside the palace. The props in the palaces were so cheap looking, especially the cherry blossoms shown right outside the window in Hao Chong's room.

Fuk Chuen's ambition and resentment are revealed. He is a volcano waiting to explode.

Uncle Choi weibo says that Stephen Wong's character was supposed to be a short lived character but Stephen did well so his scenes were extended. Uncle Choi also praised Stephen for his great improvement in his acting.

And of course can't end my jotting without mentioning my enjoyment of all Do Bo's scenes. His character is so full of male vitality, of uninhibited playfulness, brashness, arrogance and righteousness that can only come from youth.

Last word, Steven always looked so youthful in Qing drama costumes.
Steven is just so at home in the Qing Dynasty. Steven once wrote a prose essay entitled 1874, (the title to Eason's song), that he feels he was born into the wrong era, that he was born 100 years too late.

Can only sigh: "If not awakened now, when?"

edited Dor Bo's scene epi 1

The edited portion of Dor Bo's scenes towards the end of the series.

Themesong sounds so much more powerful and intense now that it has the images to evoke atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoyed episode 1. Though it has several flashbacks, the whole episode flows smoothly enough and very entertaining. The whole cast did well except for Natalie, whose performance is quite bland; instead of speaking her lines with emotions she read them impassively and quite awkwardly too. Power Chan didn't quite portray the kingly look or the aristocratic bearing.  Seems almost cowed by the whole accusation.

And as for Ching Hor Wai, she too didn't exude the calm, control, confidence, the innate strength and fortitude that I expect of Hao Chong, especially when compared with Mainland actress,Sechen Guwa 斯琴高娃) in Cheng Dao Ming's 康熙帝国 (Kangxi Dynasty), which btw is a brilliant Mainland tv series.

But Steven and Kenneth were wonderful.  Steven never fails to deliver his character, and Kenneth finally departed from his si pi xiao nian (frivolous roles with silly smiles) roles.

As to the fate of Dor Bo's real family - No wonder it has always been said that accompanying an Emperor is like accompanying a tiger, never know when it will turn on you and take your life, or that you and your family will be destroyed because of secrets too deathly to know.

**********************
If a bundled up baby (a newborn at that) could survive a flash flood over rocky surface without drowning or bodily harm, then indeed, he was destined for big things on earth. lol!

At first I thought the 15 years ago incident referred to Kenneth meeting Steven but then their meeting couldn't have been that long ago - 15 years? No way!

I think the incident refers to what Jack Hui, that Manchu troublemaker in the inn says: Let me tell you what this place used to be many years ago. It's the government building 護國公府 which used to house defeated Ming dynasty ministers. But they took in Qing insurgents and hid them in the building. Together they conspired to revolt against the Qing. So the Qing court had everyone of them and their clans of 9 generations executed. Blood flowed like rivers that day.

Fuk Chuen must have been involved in that bloody massacre. Probably his carelessness with a slip of tongue caused those innocent people their lives. Notice how the inn's name 常滿樓 changes to 護國公府 as he recalls the bloody killing of the people inside a building.

themesong MV

Themevideo

Did I say I love the themesong?  It sounds so much more powerful and intense when back up with images.

I wish there were a scene with riders on galloping horses at the drawn out ...aaaaaaaa! or during the refrain, "just a thin line between success and failure". Overall an excellent themevideo, full of drama and pathos, tempo matching with images - like towards the end, Fuk Chuen's sly smile matching the lyrics of:"still smiling, only belatedly realizes the earth shaking changes"

And also the image of Fuk Chuen raising his hand up rallying his troop and then the explosion matching: An Emperor's military feats, Domination is but a day or night away; "

I really like the beginning of the video with the lighting flashing and the thunder rolling over the palace signifying something big and ominous is imminent, carrying the theme of the series title, very cliche but I like it.

I like also like the flitting close ups on Hong Hei, Dor Bo and Fuk Chuen signifying Dor Bo as the link between them, will he effect a reconciliation or the destruction of each other?

On to the next scene - the springing of suspicion between Dor Bo & Fuk Chuen, two best friends turning against each other and because of their principles become enemies. And then the intensity of the music abruptly halts with Dor Bo's all seeing eyes...definitely the first few seconds are very intense before the start of the song.

I also especially like the last few seconds of the video beginning with Hao Chong's eyes brimming with tears to the end of the video.

SM Savoring the Flavor

Eastweek Magazine vol. 412

Translated by: Tamaya @ asianfanatics.net

Savoring the Flavor
Everybody has his or her own distinct attitude towards life, food and drink; some people love strong flavor; others, refreshing. Growing up, the people and situations encountered will have an influence on its course, and also on the maturation process of adulthood.

This time around, Steven Ma is launching his 6th new book, “Steven Ma’s Relax Attitude Towards Food and Drink.” 《馬浚偉自在飲食態度》 Steven really likes the title of this book as it contained within it situations and experiences he has encountered in his life journey. During my early acquaintance with Steven, I felt that he had no taste buds. He would eat anything, moreover, would eat only when hungry. Ordinarily if not hungry, drinking water would suffice.

His late mother admonished: "Child, no matter how busy you are, you must not let yourself go hungry, you have low blood sugar…. ”"

His mother's admonishment was what Steven retained in his mind. Eating was just to satisfy his hunger pangs. This was his attitude towards eating during his adolescence years.

In recent years, especially lately, because of TVB’s Apprentice Chef 1, Steven got to know many renowned chefs. In every shoot, he had the opportunity to taste delicious food; 13 master chefs, every one would cook three dishes for him, hence, in all, he had eaten thirty-nine specialty dishes. Gradually, Steven was able to distinguish the superior dishes from others. In a society or within a structure, people or situation he encounters daily can be deemed good or bad; likewise food. Every delicacy that fills the belly is permeated with each and every master chef’s personal experiences.

Like how Steven’s life changed from overcast to clear; from stepping out of the lingering haze after his mother’s death towards a better way of life through his passion for sports; from depression to sanguinity; from having no demands towards food to today’s ability to immediately distinguish the dragon from the phoenix at a bite, all these can be gleaned through the pages in his book.

Because his mother was sick for many years, Steven attaches great importance to curative food as home remedies. If in a meeting at his house, when Steven noticed the start of a cold in me, he would go into the kitchen, slice some scallions and boil “scallion water” for me to drink. The next day, the congestion and headache would sure to disappear.

Whenever the weather turns chilly, his “maw soup”「花膠湯」will appear, one after another nourishing delicious soup, nourishing both the soul and body. In my heart, he has already become Dr. Ma.

The origin of his knowledge came from late Mother Ma. She suffered from a chronic illness and so as to set the minds of her husband and children at ease, she continuously looked up Chinese curative soups to treat her illness. Influenced by his mother, Steven places great value on Chinese food therapy.

Today, adding his own research to his mother’s knowledge, Steven can easily cook up numerous nourishing dishes. Moreover, the curative dishes are commonly known home remedies. So long as there are food staples available at home as common as eggs, meat and vegetables, Steven will be able to whip up several plates of delectable dishes within a short period of time. Steven is not only at ease with food but even more so, nowadays, he is also at ease with his life. This is Heaven sending back to him the gift of wisdom and farsightedness. Today he is very blessed, and has learned to go with the flow and enjoy life.

This book, “Steven Ma’s relax attitude towards food” is a book of knowledge, at the same time, it is also a testimony to Steven’s 苦盡甘來 experiences in the first half of his life journey.

Savoring, has its own delight.

a recently started thread on tvb baidu with this title If Ma Zai still doesn't win tv king, I will unleash a dog to bite someone.

x posting: never mind a dog, I'll bite someone if he still doesn't get it.

Haiz, the thread starter and thread supporters must be young or recent fans.  For now the thread is filled with supporters but later the thread will be corrupted with anti fans' postings.  Threads like this also do.

Apprentice Chef II recording - Louisa So

Though having known each other for many years, Steven and Louisa complained that they have never collaborated in a series.

Steven heaps high praises on Louisa; he praise that besides acting prowess, Louisa has character that he appreciates. Reporter accuses Steven of pre-rinsing his mouth with oil, so full of compliments he is of Louisa.

tn: Steven is always very generous with praises to other people, sometimes laying it a bit too thick for others to appreciate. But I believe Steven meant every word of it because he is by nature very generous, praises or other things.
