LOYEF Exploits the untouched Kublai Khan subject matter.

Legend of Yuan Empire Founder exploits the untouched Kublai Khan subject matter.
Battle scenes are epic.

The high profile, historical epic series, "Legend of the Yuan Empire Founder" with its stellar cast lineup including Hu Jun, Charmaine Sheh, Cai Wen Yan, Wu Yue, Tang Guo Qiang, Kao Fa, Steven Ma, and Ray Lui and its over hundred million yuan grand production is presently winding down to its final countdown phase in Hengdian. Yesterday, a production staff commented that this series has spared no expenses and that its battle scenes are epic, truly breathtaking to look at.

Reportedly, this grand production series is the first ever to present such an indepth and comprehensive drama on the Yuan Dynasty. Spanning 70 years, this series adopts an epic saga style to present a panoramic viewing of the whole process of the founding of Yuan Dynasty, as well as showcasing Kublai Khan's magnificent life. Sheng Luo Song , head of Beijing Morning Star company (北京阳光盛通) weibo link that has in the past invested successfully in such grand productions as: The new Water margins《新水浒》, Da Guo Yi《大国医》, Shangrila《香格里拉》, Da Ci Shang《大瓷商》, reveals that Kublai Khan theme is a rare piece of hitherto untapped subject matter in the entertainment circle. Actually,a few years back, its producers had already started preparing for this series, and had especially invited the president of the Academy of History in Nankai University cum the president of China Yuan Dynasty Society, Professor Li Zhi An, to be its Yuan history consultant.

The people interviewed commented that the five eye-catching aspects of the series to the public would be its unique subject matter, its huge investment, its stellar production team, its stellar cast, and it new marketing approach. This estimated 150 million yuan historical epic drama under the leadership of Tsui Siu Ming has already shot on location in Mongolia and Hengdian as well as other parts of the country. Just within Hengdian, the on location filming has taken 5 months or more. A staff member said that the series’ battle scenes are simply magnificent, and breathtaking. Especially worth mentioning is the large number of ‘horse scenes’. Hu Jun, Wu Yue, and Ray Lui etc all have scenes to showcase their horseback riding prowess. Even Charmaine Sheh has had quite a bit of horseback riding scenes too.

Also, as one of this year’s handful “100 million yuan drama club” series, and this year most highly anticipated period drama, along with its stellar production team, its stellar cast, and its stellar operation and management team, Legend of Yuan Empire Founder even before its broadcast is already unanimously favored by many tv stations and distributors.

weibo 2/29/2012 fan leap year birthday

Haha! Happy birthday! Yesterday around 20 over little piggies came to visit me. Very sorry that I couldn't like last time sit down  at a table to eat and drink with you all. Because yesterday there was a wrap up production gathering so the time was tight. I could only meet up with you all at the ground floor of the restaurant. Hopefully you all didn't get chilled from the cold...[泪] lovable little piggies, till we meet again.[心]//@浚家昔昔: 4th Brother holding me nei. Bump up: Steven playing the flute - updated with screencaps

Imo, no tvb actor can do this scene as well as Steven much less surpassed his performance of a suave wealthy scholar of breeding. That insouciance, that refinement and that debonair in demeanor and actions -- simply marvelous!

weibo 2/26 - life

Two people: whether unrequited love, in love or triangle love, if it is not yours then learn to let go. To harm the person who doesn't love you or you should not love, regardless light or serious harm, it's outright wrong. We all have the right to control our own lives and futures but we have no right to destroy another person's whole life: harming others, harming ourselves and also harming our kins; regrets cannot amend the harm you have done to others, including to your kins who now bear the responsibility for you and apologized on your behalf to the public. Money and wealth can buy material stuff but cannot buy health and peace. I wish people will think thrice before acting. Don't in a moment of impulse destroy yourself and other people.

Steven's entry is provoked by this one year old incident that is now viral on weibo weibo whereby because of his unrequited love a boy set fire on a 16 year old girl for rejecting him. And because the boy's family is rich the victim's family cannot get justice so they exposed their daughter's situation on weibo.

Review by a blogger

Steven dedicated two essays in 《图文并谬》 to his mom. Much have already been written and reported on his mother, but that's not the main reason why I chose not to translate either one of them. I didn't because I knew I would not be able to do justice to Steven's writings even if I were to translate them verbatim. The 'heart' in those essays would be inevitably lost in translation; like what the blogger wrote: "A very moving story indeed, but the emotions aroused were not through the written words, but through what were not written."

作者:晚来风急 - a Singapore TV scriptwriter

Taiwan television has grown by leaps and bounds this past decade with the satellite channels predominating in my household, hence I have not watched TVB series for a long time now. One day while at a bookstore I came upon the name, “Ma Chun Wai”, I did not even know that TVB had such a person. The other book that also momentarily caught my eye was Pang Jie’s 潘秀琼 (tn: Poon Sow Keng, a 60s-70s famous singer) biography. Both are books by artistes: one is a biography; the other,  a collection of prose essays. I chose Ma Chun Wai’s 《图文并谬》.

That I chose Ma Chun Wai’s is not because he is an artiste but that I could not believe an artist can write a book.  Like how Pang Jie’s book is not written by her, but Ma Chun Wai’s is a prose essay book at that. Artiste vs prose essays – made me very curious; enticing because it intrigues. What kind of a logic is this? None, just intuition. So my apologies to Pang Jie for I only skimmed her book penned by 玉嬌 before returning it back on its spot on the shelf.

Actually, what made me pick Ma Chun Wai was primarily because of the few pages he wrote of his mother. Mother Ma passed away because of cancer. Ma Chun Wai’s writing was unadorned and subdued yet imbued with heart and genuineness.  I have never appreciated melodramatic essays; too much histrionics. In fact, the over-the-top kind of unrestrained emotional essays made me feel smothered.

He wrote when his mother was diagnosed with cancer, he was only six years old. At the time when  his mother frequently carried a heap of medicines home after her doctor visit, he was merely curious. Why mother had to consume so much medicine?

During middle school, when he finally knew what cancer was, he was panic stricken and felt helpless. He went to a corner at the school all by himself and sobbed bitterly.

Mother under Father and family’s solicitous care lived her life uneventfully for 22 years. Just when we thought Mother was blessed, the author’s pen tip shifted. He wrote that within those 22 years, she had had 3 relapses; her hearing, smell, and taste faculties; all gone. Just one sentence conveys a ton of unbearable pain.

It is precisely this kind of pen strokes that evinced Ma Chun Wai’s restrain. Later, Mother even lost the ability to ingest food, therefore could not eat. Doctor said the only way to let her live was to drill a hole into her stomach to get food into her. But Mother refused. Naturally, the author did not want to force her, but at the same time, he felt helpless against life. So at that very moment, for the very first time, he wept helplessly in front of his mother. That Mother could persist over the years of adversity was due to her unceasing optimism in the face of suffering. Son crying in the public was like a knife into Mother’s heart, and so she gave in. Subsequently, food flowed into the stomach, but the lungs got infected; she departed.

A very moving story indeed, but the emotions aroused were not through the written words, but through what were not written.

To better understand Ma Chun Wai, I watched some of his short videos which further deepens my appreciation for this Hong Kong artiste. As artistes, they should possess this kind of class and inner substance (氣質和內涵). Both are artistes of small islands, but I just can’t understand why ours are so much more inferior?

Steven's characters' eyebrows

 asianfanatics 1703 8/13/2009

Akazukin: So does it mean Steven does his make up for his ancient series and even draws eyebrows on his own? Anyway, talking about ancient eyebrows, my favourite is Ji Yuen so far. I think they did fix the eyebrows and make them more ancient and groomed but then they still look very natural. For DOMD, SG, and BH, I think the drawing of the eyebrows are a bit too obvious, and LOW is a bit too ungroomed or short for ancient.

Tamaya:  I think Steven still requires professional help, maybe he does the basic touch-up after his character's face has been put on.

Didn't really pay attention to his characters' eyebrows, but in Domd he had to have half of his eyebrows shaved off so that the make-up artist could make them look more dramatic.

by Hu @ steven-ma.org
Akazukin:  I did notice his eyebrows in DOMD are thinner and look longer, so they did shave off his eyebrows. They make him look so beautiful, hehe...

Ok ya, soliciting opinions[鼓掌] //@苏祎zoe: 4th Brother?  Whatever hairstyle, whatever character we love them all, and support them all.  I myself prefer the hair length and hairstyle in AJCL.  And my most favorite characters are Cao Ji Gin and Chow Sai Hin. Most hope 4th Brother to be able to portray  Na Lan Xing De (納蘭性德). Why not do a survey to ask little piggies their favorite 4th Brother's characters, the preferred hair style and 4th Brother future roles. Everybody, come participate. 4th Brother you first.

Starting to let my hair grow out. I want to get it to this length! Hahahaha....but for the next series, not enough time the most it could get to would be like Joe's in Healing Hands (1).

My next series is one that I instantly wanted to accept as soon as I finished reading it script. It's a mainland series. The plot is very riveting; the scriptwriting has punch.  It's an era I have never acted in before. The character's personality and background are extremely challenging. As for Hong Kong, once return to Hong Kong will talk in earnest, but for sure I will continue to film Hong Kong series.  //@馬浚偉吧: 4th Brother, can you give a hint on what your next series is? Little piggies are all very curious ya!

引以為鑑
 Use Others' Experience as Reference

Earlier read the news about Carlos Ng's retina lining sudden detachment. Very worried because this could be serious problem. Only when I found out later that he was fine did I feel relieve.

Actually, besides my worry for him, there is also this feeling of having experienced the same incident myself.  Many years ago,  when shooting, a horse riding scene in "A Change of Destiny", (tn: 2006) I had an unexpected accident. At the time, I was astride a horse for a scene shot, and the horse because of a blown leaf nicking its eye reflexively reared back its head, and this backward movement smacked right onto my right eye and the right side of my face.  And so my face bones on the right side were slightly fractured, and my right eye swollen to the size of a hen's egg.  At the time, the retina was also injured.

The crystal fluid (aqueous humor) inside the eyeball was dispersed; the retina was slightly detached; the nostrils inside had accumulated blood; for now no possible surgery for treatment; the condition  had to get well on itself.  But if the flashes in the right eye suddenly increased,  go immediately to the emergency room.... This is what the doctor said to me at the time.

After some many years, the face bones have already healed, the right eye besides the eyeball being slightly indented and seeing occasional flashes, basically suffered no after effects.

Through Carlos and my experiences, I want to remind everybody to carefully protect that fragile window of the soul.  Of course, the same to all parts of the body after all having a healthy whole body is not to be taken for granted.
