Past injuries

Compilation of reported bodily injuries that I recall. I probably missed some, so they are not on my list.
To reiterate, scars do not make a man seem cooler or more macho or more 'man', just more scarred, that all.

Weibo 9/29 Cool guy?

2013-9-28 Lately, don't know why, (my) face keeps getting hurt! Even accidentally falling asleep with glasses on could also cause a wound.... the nose injury just got heal and now yet another. (sic. injury) Haha! Actually, on the other hand, this seems to accumulate yet another trace of the passing years, quite cool, eh? [偷笑][酷][酷] p.s Anyway, still have to remind you all not to fall asleep with glasses on, if eye(s) got poked, that would be bad. [ok]

TN: May I just say that I really and truly don't get Steven's self-deprecation jibe that scars make men cooler or more macho.  He is so annoyingly predictable in that whenever his body or face got hurt he would play it down with that macho cool guy jest, which is getting old.  Real men don't need scars to look cool or macho, ok? Ok![ok]

Lyrics Translation of Steven's composition

Steven self-composed and wrote 5 songs in his 2013 Cherish cd, namely:
track 1. 心照,  track 3. 只因有祢, track 4. 不遇见, track 5. 长伴不变 track 7. 给妈妈的「倦」
Lyrics for the other songs goto sm baidu To listen to the samples goto youtube

Track 3. 只因有祢 Because of You
Two hands clasped together, eyes closed in meditation
Who will selflessly forgive because of love
These two footprints led me to comprehension
Who will always be by my side, passing the torch to the next
You and I can't never be perfect, so no need to purposely conceal
Just let this immortal love stay in your heart
I've decided to follow You
Having You feel perfect, this lifetime (we) won't ever part
Am blessed this lifetime so lucky can be together
Thankful to have You in (my) heart

Track 4. Don't Encounter 不遇见
曲∕词:二牛

#Lost, this inkling a-floating
can't conclude; thoughts chaotic too
Sacrificed, perhaps 'tis called fate* (緣)
*Not destined (無份), harm done is not slight
Romantic love, also depends on encounters
Time, teaches mortals narcissism
Deception, put it down to survival
reluctant but inevitable

Been through the terrifying lightyear
Seen everything, that ripple of utmost temptations
Wait until tired, will then feel oneself insignificant
Not meeting is the best adherence
Put away the exquisite pining
People, in the blink of an eye will grow up
Looking back at the past, perhaps with a smile #

Today, can only concede defeat
Would look at it as a very moving history
Don't want to but end result (I) still believe the lie
Waiting for the next time
If can let me go back to that year
Would rather not cross paths again.

Refrain #
*有緣無份 = have fate but not destined

TN: Honestly, I was a bit taken aback by its lyrics. Listening to the song without paying close attention to its lyrics I took it to be a Christian song but guess not.  Seems like a very personal experience. Wonder if he wrote the song before or after he broke up with gf vv.  (Eta 10/02/2013) See below comment on the song's inspiration.

Song: Resounding Applause

Feng Fei Fei's 掌聲響起 35th anniversary youtube

Hope one day Steven will sing this song live; I'll be right there in the audience listening, bursting with emotion and pride for him.

Applause Resounding
Alone, standing on this stage
Hearing the sound of applause
My heart is stirred with great emotions
How much youth has passed
How much feelings have changed
I still have your love

Recalling my first concert
Hearing its first sound of applause
My tears fell unbidden
Encountered how many failures
Encountered how many waiting
Told myself to patiently endure

refrain:
Applause resounding
My heart understands even more
Your love will stay with me

Applause resounding
My heart understands even more
The singing connects our love

--- Chinese -------

Silence is Golden

Steven and Albert Au's duet silence is golden on the latter's radio program in 2010.
I assembled the songs sang into an hour medley. Can listen on youtube or here.

Silence is Golden

Cold night wind,
Alone, looking back at old times
Seeing me in the past filled with anger
False accusation and criticism built up grievances in me
Cared too much about rumours and reactions
Learned the lesson, guided by The Book
Now enlightened, no longer self-withdrawn
But feel I know the score, no longer so stupid as before

Wipe off the tears, walk lightly with a smile
Inexplicably, already predestined you be rich or poor
What is wrong can never be right; truth is always true
Say what you will, I'll just do my part

Have always believed that silence is golden.
Right or wrong, let justice decide
Be careful in speech as not to offend
If encounters a storm, don't take it too seriously
Fills the heart with confidence
Ignore sarcasm and questioning
Disregard censure and ridicule
Live life insouciantly
Young people, live life insouciantly
Continue forward march, live life insouciantly.

Congratulations to Steven Ma on his 20th anniversary

Twenty years, years filled with all kinds of emotions, of surmounting setbacks and celebrating accomplishments, of  years passing and of time slipping by; the ups and the downs; the gains and the losses.  20 years - half of Steven's 42 years -- that perservance of sticking it through thick and thin for 20 years is in itself an accomplishment. Bravo! Well done, Steven; so proud of you and your accomplishments over the years.

On this auspicious day:
As fan, here's wishing you that your acting career continues to prosper to the next level with superior dramas; your singing career continues to release new music albums and to hold concerts worldwide, (esp. places close to me); and your writing career continues to publish more books  God has blessed you with many talents, and we as fans are so fortunate to benefit from your talents and the efforts you put into them.  Go with your heart's desire on how you wish to walk this artistic journey of yours.  May your dreams come true sooner than later.

On a personal note, thank you, Steven, for inspiring me with your wisdom and beliefs. Truly, 9/27 is a day of retrospection for Steven and fans alike on the past, and for Steven also a day of introspection of the present and the future of what he wants to do and how to accomplish that.  Best of luck to him!

If interest, read my essays on my journey as Steven Ma fan starting with my self-intro as to how I became a SM fan.  link.  (I wrote my intro as SM fan because I'd been asked frequently on my conversion.)

Anyone care to reminisce how you became a Steven Ma fan?

Steven's 20th year in showbiz

September 27th, is an important date in Steven's artistic career. September 27 1993 was the release date of Steven's first cd, “Fortunate is to have met you”. To commemorate the birth of his first album, he designated the date to be his debut in showbiz. 1997 was when he joined TVB as a per series contract artist. His first tvb series was Files of Justice 4 followed by Duke of Mt. Deer.

So, Happy 20th Anniversary to Steven. Here's wishing you getting the roles you desire, the characters you want to portray and the dramas you wish to film.

weibo 9/26/2013 What role(s), what drama(s), what song(s)?

2013-09-26 20:28 Some dramas, some songs, in my lifetime, (I) must portray, I must film, I must sing! Know which ones? Or perhaps, what you think I should portray? To film? To sing? Would you please tell me? Haha!

TN: Of course the two characters Steven most wants to portray are Xu Zhimo and Lu Xun.

Photos separated by the passing of fleeting time.  The now vs then. So handsome then and young, still handsome now but more mature -- or maybe it is the hair that separates the then and now?

For me:
Role= Please don't portray someone in his 20's or even early 30's. The character should be someone closer to Steven's own age.  A charismatic mature man.  Tired of watching his common everyday man - he did those roles well and all, but he needs other challenging roles to build up his acting repertoire, and for breakthrough.

Drama = Please, please don't let that discarded 'Single Mother, Ten Years' turn up like a bad penny. (shudder) And please no more, I repeat, no more  Qing dynasty drama. No more shaving his head bald. Steven's Qing image has lost its freshness like way back when, and now all of his Qing characters sort of blended into one big image of this man with a 'pigtail at the back of his head.' So enough of that qing guy already on my tv screen even though Steven looks absolutely stunning in Qing costumes. Moreover, I personally don't relish looking at a bald-headed Steven once again for at least 6 month until hair starts growing, slowly.

Song = maybe more dramatic and emotion rousing songs than those on his Cherish cd.

JMHO

So mosey over to Steven's weibo to tell him your opinion.

Editorial Review on Steven's 2013 'Cherish' cd

Honestly, the songs sound much better when listen in the still of a quiet night, when the mind is less preoccupied with the demands of daily living and it can finally take a break to relax and to shut out the outside world, therefore more receptive to the calm, soothing music and Steven's crooning. I have the cd in my car but somehow during the day when playing the songs, except for my favorite songs (see below), the overall cd came across as being too slow, too monotonous in tune and arresting enough to hold my attention.  Incidentally, the fact that 5 of my favorite songs are all composed and written by Steven is totally coincidental, truth is, I didn't even realize that until much later after the fact.

--- Favorite songs---
Top 3
- 給媽媽的倦 : mv makes this song all that more personal thus memorable: the quietness of the melody;  the expressive vocal; the guitar strumming and the rhythmic drumming - all soft and non-intrusive accompaniment; vocal evocation of longing & remembering; a son still missing his mother; the change in vocal pitch; all collectively makes this song heartstrings tugging.

- 只因有祢 : very impressive a cappella: catchy and rthymic tune; mellifluous and sonorous male vocal; a delightful, fluid, gentle, light and lilting multi vocal harmony.  Love it!

- 如願 : love the whole melody, singing and the helplessness vibe evoked. The one song that constantly replays unbidden in my head.

I can put play the above 3 songs + 不遇見 on repeat and not get bored listening to them.

----Other favorites---
-  不遇見:  the violin totally rules, its solo exceptionally mesmerizing in the still of a quiet night.
-  心照 : the warm mv connects audio with visual, music with images
- 長伴不變 : Song is ok, if only because its fast tempo breaks up the monotony of the cd slow tempo
靜待那天:A comforting song. Steven sang it with a calm serenity and unwavering faith that we will reunite with our dearly departed loved ones one day.

Editorial - Steven's Viet Videos

A shout out to Crystin, webmistress of SM Viet fans forum and FB.[爱你]

Wow! I was just now browsing youtube under "Steven Ma" (as opposed to 马浚伟) and found lots of goodies uploaded by Crystin including Steven's news and mvs video clips all translated into Vietnamese, and the very impressive cache of Yuan Yang Pei video clips with Viet subtitles.

You are Chinese illiterate (I think) so the translations must have been both laborious and time-consuming, right? I totally salute your diligence and perseverance to promote and share Steven's work with his Viet fans.

Again, Crystin, how did you insert the subtitles onto a video clip? ( I know I'd asked that question once before but I've forgotten your answer. ) [哈哈]

It's Risky Business in Mainland

Ada Choi's recent hair-raising experience with a mainland business company brought to mind Steven's own scary experience in 2004 (filming Snake Curse 《蛇咒》) when he was unexpectedly put in a dire predicament by an unscrupulous mainland assistant producer, and how he resolved that crisis. AF link

Excerpt from a 2006 news report
S: [..] But, freelancing can also create dire predicaments.
Once, while filming in Meizhou, one night we went to a local disco for an location filming for a scene. When we got there, suddenly there were people holding up banners; somehow it had become my concert. Even selling the admission ticket for 120+ yuan each. Turned out the film producer did not pay rental to the disco management; he tricked the owner into thinking that I would perform on stage to cover the rent; thus, I became the sacrificial lamb. I'm stubborn; I absolutely refused; the people wanted to beat me up. I said, "Go ahead, beat me to death here!"

How did it end? I called up Li Ru En’s husband (Ceng Zhi Ming) for help. His factory was in Meizhou. He sent in his factory foreman and called in the public security (police). So for the rest of the filming in Meizhou, I had a police escort. There’re things that artistes cannot easily take of. I didn’t want to deal with the mountain folks, and it just happened at that time, TVB sought me out. I thought the time was right to sign on.

Incident described in more details: 2007 Anna Chau radio transcript

Extortion
A: As to your deepest impression of losing your temper, was it that one time when you were doing a stage performance?

S: oh, yes!

A: Can you talk about?

S: Sure, but it wasn’t a stage performance, it’s filming a movie.

A: but it became a stage performance.

S: At that time, it wasn’t plain losing my temper. Actually to protect myself, I transformed into a different person. What happened is that I went to a very remote, mountain town to shoot a movie. My whole contract was just to shoot a movie. Who knew, later one night, something wasn’t proper. That was during the on-location shoot of a disco scene. Even during the journey to the disco location, I already sensed that something wasn’t quite right. I did say I’m a very sensitive person. I felt that some of the crew were acting strangely. (gugu guai guai) At that time, a female assistant (tn: Tsui Jie - she has mentioned that incident in her weibo when both their lives were threatened.) accompanied me. There’s just us two from HK, the rest were from mainland. When we reached the site, something really fishy was going on. Wah, bat dak liu! Hanging all over the place, fluttering in the winds were red helium balloons and a huge banner, “Welcome Ma Chun Wai to tonight’s performance!” My poster was plastered outside and the ticket cost was 129 yuan.

A: Did you think, yee? just filming a scene had to be this real?

S: But that scene wasn’t about the real me, wasn’t about Ma Chun Wai; but about my character in the movie. When I saw it, I knew instantly that they wanted to extort me. But if I were to leave immediately without getting to the bottom of it, then it would be to my disadvantage. So I got inside for makeup and was getting ready to act the scene, and to speak with the director. The producer came and introduced the DJ to me, ha what? Why do I need to know him? The DJ asked me how to introduce me for my entrance onto the stage. I said: Ha? Why do I need an introduction to get on stage? I’m here to make a movie. Did you make a mistake? He said no. And then the producer pulled up someone supposedly the assistant producer, a big, tall, hefty man. Of course, I knew I was being extorted. But I’ve a stubborn personality. So you think you would extort me, well then I will fight back. So I sat down and said, “I won’t sing. I’m here to make a movie. You’ve made a mistake!” At first I was polite. I said how can you guys be so ridiculous. Then the producer said, “Please help, just go up there and sing 3 songs.”

Wah! 3 songs! I said, “As artistes, our work by nature has to be accounted for. Our work is tied in with a contract and a fixed price. Also we have management. I can’t do this, sorry!” Seeing my inflexibility, he got another big sized assistant producer. He came, rolled up his sleeves, like readying for a fight. He asked, “Are you going to sing or not?” I lifted up my head. I kept my seat. I refused to sing. No! So what now? Then the director and the crew came over and asked what’s going on? At the same time, I asked my assistant to call up the movie lo ban (boss) to come and resolve this predicament. When he was aggressive, the situation was really dangerous for me. Because I didn’t know if he had co-horts around. After that incident, found out that there were around 10 to 20 of his people in the province. After reporting the incident to the police, some co-workers introduced their local friends to me. I’ve never made a movie with a daily escort of two policemen. But I didn’t care. I’m making a movie you can’t extort me. Subsequently, they changed that producer. And finally managed to finish the movie. Actually in between there were some other problems but they didn’t affect me. It had nothing to do with me.

Now that I think back, wah, I was quite brave then. But that’s just my personality. Yes is yes, no is no. Don’t you try to extort me. If you exhort, I will not take it lying down. I asked him, “So, you want to beat me up? Go ahead! Beat me to death, but I still won’t sing. So that’s how it went. Actually, working in mainland does not pose this kind of problems, this was unusual. All my work there went smoothly with no problems and the people I worked with were all very nice. Except for this one time. The way I see it, is that a big tree has many branches, and occasionally will meet some bad apples.

A: I guess in all your years working, this must be you first time or the only time encountering such an incident. I heard from friends incidents like this not only happened in China but also in Malaysia.

S: I’ve never encountered the same in Malaysia. That was my first and only time.

A: Could it be that you are someone who will yield to soft pleading but not to hard force. Say at that time, it was not this humongous big guy but a petite delicate person like Angel in our Macao filmology. (Anna and Steven had previously collaborated in a short filmology on advertising Macao) There she was pleading with you. Like: Please, all the tickets are already sold out. Would you…?

S: In my position, I couldn’t help because this concerns the nature of my work. It would be against the rules. I had a contract with a management company. My company had a cut in my fees. I couldn’t forfeit your fees. If I privately agreed to perform because of your pitiful display, I would have done something wrong, which is to have betrayed my company. Or worse maybe my company might misunderstand and thought that I had collected your fees. I couldn’t do it. If I were freelance, like you say, and had no company backing, if a big, hefty guy approached me, I would definitely not sing. But if like that ‘pitiful’ girl, maybe I might help you out by singing one song, fine. The situation is resolved. So maybe without management contract I might do it but probably wouldn’t. Because this concerns principles. (ethics)

A: Actually that situation then was quite dangerous. That big guy and his co-horts. And you, all by yourself alone. Also those people were in covert while you’re in overt.

S. Which is why later….sometimes life is like that. Troubles find you even though you didn’t provoke them.

..................................................................................................

Posts reposted from a 2009 AF discussion thread

Akazukin:
I love his strong hold onto principles and ethics. His courage in upholding them is very admirable. But men... can they never be able to escape what maybe a woman's trick? (re: above transcript italics) No matter if he/she is being offensive or pitiful, if he/she wanted to trick him into performing in order to get around paying rent and earn from the concert tickets, he/she is clearly unconscionably taking advantage of him. Such action, no matter how wallpapered, does not deserve to have him to sing for them. The thing is, if he sang one song for the 'pitiful' girl, he is not helping her, he is letting her taking advantage of him. If he wants to sing, the only reason he should sing is for the audiences that have bought their tickets with real money.

honeydaisy: Haha that is so funny. A woman's guiles are a man's downfall ... seen this happen many times in history, right? But I like to think that just goes to show what a gentleman he is!

weibo 9/20/2013 Movie has wrapped up

9/20  20:17Movie "Next Stop• Love You Anew" (下一站•再愛你) has wrapped up shooting today! Give thanks that all went smoothly and also happily! Although tired, so long feel it is worth it then that's all that matters! Thank you to each and everyone of you in the production team, to every cast member, especially give thanks to Boss Li @ 电影李德威 , Director 李秉光, to wife @演员杨紫 (GuideYang -楊導), to 李師傅 who chauffeured me daily; thank you, everybody. Wish everybody peace, good health and happiness. Wish everybody peace in the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Guess the movie has once again changed its title for the 3rd time == most agree that this present title sounds better than its two predecessors -- gives off a more modern feel to it.  Anyway, looking forward to watching it next year.

Movie: Life is a miracle

9/17 12:29  Hahaha!

Watch the movie 2001 生命因愛動聽 youtube link at your risk of being spoiled for Steven's movie. Not wanting to be spoiled I watched 1 min of the beginning and then fast-forward towards the end of the movie randomly stopping @1:24:43 and guess what scene that was? Yap, right at the spot where the husband holds up a sign ( I  [心] U  [呵呵]  ) .  Gotta say that husband's whole appearance looks much, much nicer than our dearest Steven in his cringe-worthy nerdy outfit and his goofy HP glasses. Guess husband dearest Steven is trying to get a smile from his ailing wife?  Sure did with me.

Anyway, just a heads-up to those who may want to watch the 2001 movie, but I'll going to wait (im)patiently for Steven's version.

movie - weibo 9/16/2013 wedding pix

2013-09-16 20:38 So long the sentiment remains, even if at the ends of the earth...the next stop is eternity!

Movie: Steven & Yang Zi Yan's grapes stomping dance

Above video clip is the last part of YZY's interview. To watch the full video goto this link ku6.com. This is my first time seeing her on screen, and.... nope...no comments.

However, I want to comment on this very curious observation of mine and by other fans ---- how come even though Steven was there too at the time of the interview, only YZY was being interviewed?  Since filming commenced, as far as publicity of the movie goes, the male lead has beeng completely invisible to the media, much less a mention of Steven's name by them. This doesn't bode well at all for Steven! What gives?

Aside:
Haha! Their stomping dance on grapes reminds me of "Lucy stomping grapes" in "I Love Lucy". Lucy link - can skip the earlier segment and forward to 2:17 where Lucy gets into a fight with her 'partner' inside the tub!  Hilarious! "I Love Lucy" remains the funniest tv sitcoms ever for me.

Editorial - on a still from movie "Next Station I love"

When I first saw this pix their embrace just looks ..weird...totally awkward, not at all touching or  aesthetics (as it hopes to elicit?). See their totally contrasting expressions: one - nonchalantly expressionless; the other - full-out unrestrained emotional breakdown expression. The contrast in their emotional displays just feels ...off.  Female is 'obvioulsy calmly' consoling a heartbroken male BUT her expression does not depict calmness, instead her face looks incomprehensibly bland and nonchalant  (as opposed calm), shouldn't she at least show a flick of concern for the male's emotional breakdown?

But weirder still is -- their embrace position is just ... awkward, and their stark black-white clothing only emphasizes that 'position'  awkwardness of her bended knees placed snugly between his straddling legs with his knees up.  Also, sorry to say but the male looks much diminshed, all curled up clinging against the female, who, conversely, looks huge. Moreover, the position is not a good shot for Steven's really skinny legs. Or, the image can also be viewed as a 'mother' comforting a 'child' in her arms.  Anyway, just not a good pix for me to behold - neither moving nor aesthestic!

I later read some SM baidu fans' comments on the awkwardness of their embracing position too - guess we have similar impression of the pic.  Their observation of the pix:  "shouldn't the man be on top ma?"  "the female seems to revel (陶醉) in the embrace",  "guess, the male is forced into that subjugating poisition?", "the female looks huge against the diminished, clinging man" etc.  Sorry to say, none was moved by this image presented on the pix.

Goto say that embrace position is most unfortunate indeed! Maybe with movement on the screen, their embrace would not look so ..awkward? Which is why I never take a screen cap at face value - a split moment in time capture is indeed deceptive.

Heehee! My apologies to Sandy Lau, who has so kindly uploaded this pix on SM official fb page. Just different opinions!

Anyway, what do you  all think of the above pix? Moved by the pix or find the image awkward?

真愛無悔 (True Love Has No Regrets)

2014 真愛無悔 aka 生命因愛動聽 (life is a miracle) promo

-- announcement--
2013 Respectfully request prayers
Beijing Municipal Bureau of Radio, Film and Television has issued a filming pemit to remake the movie "生命因愛動聽". Will be released in over 4000 theaters in China.

The remake of the movie "生命因愛動聽", adapted from a real life story, will commence filming in August 2013 in Beijing. It will be released in 2014 in theaters across China. To reinforce China's distinguishing feature, the participating artists include Yang Zi Yan, Liu Xi, and Steven Ma. (Per Steven's clothing, this video insert is from an 'old' event this year.)

Paraphase: He says that actually his own mother was a cancer patient who battled cancer for 22 years. So his own family knew how to care for her. As a long term care taker of a chronic patient himself when watching the movie "生命因愛動聽" he  can thoroughly relate to the movie. Besides empathizing the patient's feelings he also understands the feelings of the patient's loved ones. He says just like what Man Fai (文辉) said people will inevitably pass away one day into the Lord's embrace, to the heavenly home, but what they leave behind -image, vocal, and written words will continue to propagate the message.
