Steven as guest on Nancy Sits' metroinfo FF 99.7 開心家天下 to plug his new song, Ba Si.

Oh, the bangs' back! Did I say I dislike his hairstyle with the bangs and bowl shaped to boot, well I do! I'd rather he get a hairstyle that gives off a sophisticated mature man look than one with bangs.

Steven Ma Gives Song to Dad as Father's Day Gift

Credit news translation to hyn5

The mini movie that Steven Ma produced for his new song, 《爸士》, premiered. Steven's father used to be a bus driver. This time, he hopes to use the new song to profess to his father. In the mini movie, he sat in the bus driver's seat for the first time. He expressed feeling a very surging mood. He said, "My dad has retired for ten years, but still remember the days of being a bus driver. The new song is a Father's Day gift. Dad still does not know yet. Last year, made a song for Mom. This year, giving one to Dad".

Steven also said that his father has blood pressure problems in recent years. On holidays, would also accompany him to get a health examination. As a son or daughter, should take the initiative more: "Hong Kong people are rather reserved toward fatherly love. Care for him, but would not say it out. In these few years, I have had more physical contact with my dad, but still cannot say 'I love you'. Hope to use this song to encourage Hong Kong people to take the initiative more". When asked whether his father has urged him to get married, Steven frankly said, "Would want it in his heart, but would not say it out".

When talking about him slapping his son in the mini movie, Steven emphasized, "That slap was fake. I myself do not support corporal punishment. In my whole life, Dad has only hit me once because I secretly went mountain climbing, and the housewife next door told on me. In the end, he hit me with a whip" *.  Steven also thinks that children should be taught when young...cannot spoil them. In addition, Steven acted as the producer this time, and also participated in the editing...hope to be able to create even more productions in the future.

Tamaya's Note: *with a whipI would translate the original words 藤條 he was canned as with a long thin rattan cane or a feather duster with an elongated rattan handle.

In other news reports Steven used the phrase  藤條炆豬肉 = "six of the best"  canned either using a feather duster or a thin rattan

News: Steven Ma's MV Short Film Dedicated to Father as Father's Day Present

To commend father’s love, Steven Ma approached his music album producer with the story of his relationship with his father, thus, the creation of his new song, Ba Xi (爸士) dedicated to his father. Originally, Steven planned to produce a regular mv accompaniment for the new song, but he felt that their story could not be fully expressed within that few minutes. It just happened at the time KMB* contacted him concerning some other job. To make his story more complete and meaningful, Steven proposed his short film mv idea to the KMB person-in-charge, consequently getting the latter’s approval the use of KMB venue and bus to facilitate the filming of “ Ba Si (爸士 )*. Steven's first short film as producer will debut May 19 in all KMB buses for viewing by their onboard passengers.

Steven specifically produced the film as a Father’s Day present for his father, and on that day June 15 he plans to surprise his father with the viewing of his 1st short film as producer and present it to his father as a tribute to his fatherly love. In the short film, Hugo Chan (陳泓達) portrayed Steven’s younger self, while Gigi Wong Pui Chi (黃佩芝), a performing arts student, portrayed his late mother.

Steven’s father, a retired KMB bus driver of 30 years or so, is a taciturn man who rarely expresses his feelings hence it was difficult for Steven to understand the full extent of his father’s hardships. So, Steven incorporated a plethora of real feelings into the film to honor his father.

Steven said: “During filming, while seated on the bus driver seat the image of my father driving a bus flashed thru my mind; my feeling was tumultuous, inexpressible; thinking back to all those years of him toiling day in and day out in this small cramped space. Today, buses have improved in many aspects, but in those days the buses my father drove did not have a temperature control device so he endured both the cold and the heat; very grueling.”

To personally experience some of the hardships in his father’s job, Steven drove a bus around the bus terminus since he does not have a bus driver's license so could not drive on the road. Clad in his custom tailored standard bus driver’s uniform, Steven was teased: “Where got such a good looking bus driver wo?” Steven said: “Today, I had the rare opportunity to personally experience my father’s job, moreover, this mv short film was my first time as a producer too. It has definitely augmented my experience as a producer."

*Ba Si = a wordplay on baba + the colloquial Cantonese word for bus.

KMB = Kwoloon Motor Bus
Steven weibo 2014-05-18 12:42 : Actually not only bus drivers but also mini bus drivers, taxi drivers, truck drivers and the like; everyday on the road for long hours cooped inside a cramped space, and when stuck in a traffic jam, the feeling is indescribable....tough; all for their families and livelihoods!

Listen to previews:
1) Steven vows to stay put in music world
Steven plugs his new song, "I"m getting married", from his soon to be released 《Cherish II》album. For now he temporarily puts aside his pseudonym "Two Buffaloes" 「二牛」creator identity and reverts back to his singer identity. Last year when he released his 《Cherish》album he had pledged to continue his music development long term, to which he now says he will continue to honor his oath. He hopes to release a music album every year and to continue the《Cherish》album series with new releases.

2) Steven's new song describes a groom's pre-wedding jitters on his wedding eve.
Steven plugs his new song, "I'm getting married", from his soon to be released 《Cherish II》album. The song tells of marriage and marriage vows. It depicts a groom's trepidation on his wedding eve and how he would adjust to a new chapter in his life.

Note: I wish Steven would do a musical light-hearted like Mama Mia or dramatic and heartrending like Miss Saigon, or produce one of his own inspired by his beloved Chinese poet, Xu Zhi Mo, with his 3 women.

UPDATED: AC concert (16-song playlist)

My thanks to all youtube uploaders, much appreciated.

The next song up is "Moon represents my love".  Because I had so identified this song with Teresa Deng's soft, gentle and utterly feminine voice I thought the saccharine sweet melody as a woman's song, therefore unsuited to a masculine vocal, and I've listened to quite a few including Steven's past rendition. But surprisingly I actually like Steven's modified version, which departs from his past soft and gentle crooning style of singing "Moon". His version here has a distinctive varied pitch modulation unlike the song's original tune- sweet melody but unvaried modulation. Usually I dislike changes to a beloved song's tune but I really like how Steven sang "Moon" with pizazz - not as a mincing sweet-nothings crooning but as a masculine love serenade to his audience; I totally buy into it.

不了情 is an old favorite song of my grandma's and I've watched the old movie with her too so again I was biased towards a female voice singing this song. A classic woman's heartbreak song, I thought the song was not suitable for a male singer. Although Steven did an excellent job in this rendition I still prefer original female singer's heartrending slower tempo rendition. But when I listened to Steven sing the song live in his deep masculine voice imbued with emotion I was totally drawn into his song, entranced. While his 不了情 is sang with a man's melancholy, his 新不了情 is sang with a man's heartbreak.  Steven truly has a most wonderful bass voice.  As for the rest of his songs, I've heard them many times online but there is simply no surpassing the feeling of being actually serenaded by Steven live - it's an experience felt not just heard.

Had I been less in a daze I would recall more details than those here. It's like how someone said "Oh, that was SO good" but when pressed for details as to what SO good about it, she/he could not pinpoint the exact reason why,  just that it was; that's me. lol!  What stick in my mind are my euphoric feeling, the exhilarating atmosphere, and my contentment of being in Steven's presence listening to him sing. Had I not written down the list of songs sung during my rare moments of lucidity I probably would have a hard time recalling them now. lol!

Unexpectedly I got to go to Steven Ma & Niki Chow’s Mother’s Day Concert  held in Caesars Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, USA, after all.  (2014 May 11 Sunday 1 am) . Steven Ma wasn't well in Atlantic City concert, thanks friends & fans for their concern

Steven Ma was invited by Caesars Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, USA, as the celebrity performer for its Mother’s Day program. (sic. along with Niki Chow)  Given his extensive performing experiences in the US, this concert should be a breeze for him but unfortunately that was not the case. The night before his Hong Kong departure Steven did not get much sleep because of a stomach ache and diarrhea. He suspected it must be something he ate that night. He said: “I've had bad stomachaches before but none as severe as this. I suspect it's caused by something I ate the night before departure. But since I had to get on a plane I could only take some Chinese herbal tea and pain medicine for stomach ache for relief.  In flight, I only drank water and dared not eat anything.  I thought I would get better after resting for 10 hours or more inside the plane but when it landed I was still sick."

Steven's not feeling well in his concert

credit 蓉蓉細語  May 12 22:16   Steven keeping fit

May 11 16:47  The concert has ended, my thanks to all who were there for their support and enthusiasm. I'm very happy! Thank you to friends and little piggies for their concern. My health has improved, at least it did not affect my performance (actually it did a little la. This got to be the most times I messed up my lyrics.) But, I'm truly grateful to have successfully completed the show!  Aside, I want to send in my belated Mother's Day's best wishes; wishing mothers everywhere peace, good health and happiness, and also hope my mother in heaven heard me sing「倦」for her. May 11 22:40 I've had diarrhea for two days consecutively so of course become thinner! Don't worry, I'm fine now after my sleep.

May 10 10:35   I already had a stomach ache on the eve of departure, and it got worse when I got to America. So painful I could hardly stand up straight. Fortunately, I've brought along some relief medicines. Today, the condition has improved. The show is tomorrow, hope the pain will leave soon! Praying! ..p.s. did not drink any coffee or coke; food intake went down; milk drinking went up. Suddenly thin again...

May 8 17:34  Despite a fitful sleep last night the eyes looked even bigger. haha! Getting ready to leave for the Atlantic City concert, hope everything goes well!

note: From the wenweipo news report, looks like Steven had a bad case of food poisoning - bad enough when it happened at home but must worse in Steven's case.

Official MV: Steven Ma & Fala Chen duet, 'Platonic Love'.

馬浚偉 x 陳法拉 - 非戀之情 Official MV

I'd refrained from giving my first impression of this mv so as not to be rash in voicing my pov. After sleeping on it, here is my honest opinion, tell me yours.  Steven looks handsome and Fala looks  ravishing in the mv BUT....

I think the mv missed the very heart/essence of the song as it not only fails to convey the lyrics' message of the Mala's platonic love relationship but also fails to evoke the images of Mala's private moments (re lyrics) of Steven comforting Fala sans the crowd. In short, the mv fails as a visual expression of Platonic Love song when Steven opted to visualize a love-for-all theme over a platonic love theme, in doing so, the mv loses the intimacy of the lyrics and the identity of the song. True that the literal translation of its song title is "non-romantic love relation" but from its lyrics, the song is a very personal, very private and very intimate running conversation of an older 'brother' sagely comforting/advising an aggrieved younger 'sister'. I know the intent of the mv is to convey different forms of love, and as an encompassing 'love-for-all' song theme it would be a nice enough mv with its positive vibe but the problem is that the mv is not relevant to the Platonic Love duet. This mv is more like a random home video of an ensemble cast (Mala inclusive) with no main leads anchoring a theme or used as a focal point, which in my opinion is a flaw in itself because in striving to be 'nice' and 'positive', the mv loses the integrity of entertainment and becomes bland.

To elaborate, as an eagerly long anticipated Mala's Platonic Love mv, I not only find the mv lacking a tight thematic focus but also missing that very important 'wow-oomph' factor that makes a mv stand out from the crowd! Furthermore, the mv fails to visually capture the very essence of the song, which is the message that a platonic love relationship (as opposed to romantic) does and can exist between a man and a woman. The mv also fails to evoke the images of the lyrics which is the duo's very personal/intimate and very private in-the-moment spontaneous dialog exchange, which to their credit, both Steven and Fala gave an excellent portrayal of their characters' personalities and feelings.  Moreover, the presence of superfluous people+baby+dogs cluttered/crowded the whole mv, muddled the focus and message of the song, and more importantly, intruded in the duo's intimacy that is the essence of the song.  No offense but honestly, I couldn't careless about the other people in the mv and would have rather them not being featured in the mv at all.

I know Steven wants to promote the different kinds of love via the mv but it is precisely the contrived deliberateness I dislike because the mv comes across like an evangelistic propaganda or a love-for-all commercial or a "love me, love my dogs love my friends package" than an artistic mv for Platonic Love.  If want to promote love-for-all then write another song  for that mv, let Platonic Love mv be a pure Mala entertaining musical (like Broadway or stage show, or did a dance number like 'So you think you can dance' ) video for all Mala fans to enjoy without the lofty intent. I'm sorry to say the Platonic Love mv is a miss for me in that it does not realized its song's potentiality - mv is not bad but not outstanding either when it could be so much more because Mala were really good in their portrayals. At least this mv is much better than TVB's Heaven Will mv - now that was truly a WTH was that mv.

Steven Ma and Fala Chen oppose eating dog meat

on.cc東網專訊
馬浚偉陳法拉堅決反對食狗肉

Recently, Steven Ma has been promoting his new music album, now in its final stage of production the album will be launched in June this year. To appease fans' anticipation, the mv of his "Platonic Love" duet with Fala Chen that has recently been plugged on various radio stations and media outlets will be released online on May 7th, a free for all preview for fans' enjoyment.

Steven appreciates the public feedback on Platonic Love after its plug. He and Fala also love this song because it expresses that besides the invaluable romantic love there are also different kinds of love such as: familial love, friendship love and even the love between owners and their pets. Thus,'Platonic Love' mv even included a pair of cute dogs in its filming.

Steven and Fala are both dog lovers. During the mv filming they shared their love for dogs. They expressed that they would never eat dog meat, and that they are totally against consumption of dog meat!* From young Fala had wanted to own a dog but her parents forbade so she didn't, now she only has a cat as pet at home. As for Steven, since losing his pet dog ten years or so ago, he has put off getting another pet dog due to his hectic work schedules and his constant absences in Hong Kong. Steven believes that dogs are sentient and should be treated lovingly. He gets enraged whenever he reads news of human cruelty towards the little animals.

Steven will soon be flying over to Atlantic City in US this week for a concert. Earlier, he has been busy in his album production so has skimped on rest, so, when done with his US concert he will first fly to Taiwan for a break, and then onward to S. Korea to buy clothes in preparation for his new music album's promotions and launch in June. Steven said: "I like to be hands-on, but of course I'll accept other professional opinions. I truly attach a great importance to this June launching of my new album. After my return from S. Korea I'll be fully engaged in the next round of promotions for this album."

*Incredibly there is actually an annual June dog meat eating festival in Guangxi, China (广西玉林夏至荔枝狗肉节) . Like Mala, many Hong Kong and mainland celebrities have taken a stance to oppose killing dogs for consumption.

per Steven's weibo, their 'Platonic Love' mv will be online this evening, so keep an eye out for it.

Steven's interview on Pastor Lam's radio talk show

credit wong.helena86 for the audio clips used in my video

Steven's interview
In addition to the below news report here's a quick summary of the hour long interview.
The interview started with small talks on Steven's recent tvb series, Storm in a Cocoon.  Steven confirms that Poon Ka Yeung did indeed remember Bing Bing.  The talk segues into his nose injury during SIAC filming. When injured Steven's instant reaction was that at least it wasn't his eye that got hurt (because of his old eye injury in 2006), and his 2nd reaction was to ask for a mirror to look at his nose.  As actor, Steven was naturally concerned how the injury would affect his facial appearance. When teased by Pastor Lam that the nose injury at least proved that Steven's nose is natural, the latter is quick to assert that his facial features as well as his whole body are all natural, totally devoid of any plastic surgery or enhancement shots of any kind.

at 11:17 Retelling his mother's cancer; how her fight with cancer totally influenced his mind and attitude and his lifestyle. (turning him into a homebody taking care of his mother) He says his father not only took care of him and sisters but also his sick wife.  Steven says besides his mother he is also greatly influenced by his dad's belief and conduct.  Since his mom has passed away for so many years now, Steven has told his dad that if he wants to find a partner to share his life with, it is ok with Steven and his siblings but Steven knows his dad won't find another woman to replace Steven's mom. Steven still recalls the image of his sick mother holding onto his father's arm slowly walking down a pavement - that was a picture of 'in health and in sickness' of a couple who loved each other  'till death do we part' for life love.  But men of Steven's dad's caliber are hard to come by these days - father who was the sole breadwinner to his family of seven and who stood by his sick wife thru good times and bad times until her death, and even now remains unmarried.

Because of all the health problems that befell on his family from his mother's cancer to his grandmother's passing away a year later to his second sister's having a problematic birth delivery that almost caused his nephew his life to his 2nd sister diagnosed with breast cancer, Steven was angry at God and Heaven, and everything else. What use is God if he is so merciless and cruel?  Steven's emotional and mental anguish greatly impacted his thinking and his conduct. So, why did he change his thinking and embrace Christianity?

Though Cherish2 unlike its predecessor, Cherish, is not a Christian music album it is imbued with Jesus' teachings on love. The songs have their own respective love theme inspired by the various kinds of love between people  - romantic love (I'm getting married), sibling love (Platonic love), familial love (father's love), altruistic love etc than universal love of God for his people.

songs played: Platonic love;  I'm getting married.

The below report is extracted and loosely paraphrased from: metrodaily May 2nd 2014
Gist: Steven is well acquainted with health issues because of his late mom's 22-year battle against cancer to which she finally succumb to.  Even as his mother's illness raged furiously, seriously weakening her health and intensifying her pain and suffering so did Steven becoming more and more withdrawn during that period.  Because of his need to take care of his mother Steven said during that period he was even more homebody than a homeboy. (宅男) His daily living was simple -- work--take care of mom (home or hospital)--work.

Steven also talks about how his father stuck by his mom (Steven's) thru thick and thin all those years, and his attitude and conduct in turn greatly influenced Steven's own views on love.  "It's him who taught me what responsibility is, what 'for life' is, and what "till death do we part" is.

Steven talks about how he started work at an early age to lessen his dad's financial burden on taking care of his family.  Steven is truly a filial son.
