Steven Ma Denies Being Kevin Cheng's Replacement

馬浚偉否認執鄭嘉穎二攤 12/30/2012

Yesterday (12/29/2012) , Steven Ma attended the 47th Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo (HKBPE) to promote his endorsed herbal products for Hin Sang Hong Company Ltd. (衍生行)  Steven has just come back from his concerts in the US but he will be returning to the US and Canada too next year to hold more concerts. Steven, who started his career as singer, plans to re-enter the music world, and in anticipation of releasing a music album he is presently doing the legwork of collecting new songs.

Earlier, there were rumors that Kevin Cheng had angered TVB executive, Catherine Tsang, for rejecting an ancient drama series, Cold Mountain Hidden Dragon 寒山潛龍, because he did not want to shave his head. So giving up on Kevin Cheng, Zan Jeh (Ms. Tsang) turned to Steven, who is said to be her 'trusted aide' (心腹),  as replacement. Steven said that indeed he sees Zan Jeh as his mentor and benefactor but he denied being her 'trusted aide'.

Steven said that even after his contract had ended February this year, he and TVB still kept in touch. He said: "Zan Jeh has indeed approached me for collaboration but that was quite a while back, and it was definitely not this series. This rumor is just a beautiful misunderstanding, that's all(Would you mind shaving your head for the series?)

It's true that after shaving the head it is more inconvenient to do outside shows. I don't think I'll shave my head anytime soon but if the script is good I won't mind. Anyway I've shaved my head 6 (sic 5) times already.

"Actually besides TVB, Ricky Wong (HKTV/CTI) and other TV stations have approached me too. When everything is confirmed I will announce my plans publicly."

As to his plans for next year, if all goes well, they will be formalized after Chinese New Year. For the more immediate, he will be shooting a mainland series during the Chinese New Year, and plans to shoot a HK series after that.

When asked about Raymond Lam's plans to retire from the entertainment industry because of his BA loss and to help his family business, Steven said: In the past few years he seems more focused on his music. Don't be disheartened.  He has lots of potential, very suited to this field. Don't waste himself."  (If he leaves then you would have more chance to win the tv king title?) I'm no longer a part of TVB. Moreover, I never had any fate with winning awards. Now grown up, feels getting an award is just the icing on the cake. 我现在不是无綫一分子,而且我一向跟奖项无缘,人大了只觉奖项是锦上添花。(He said he wants to help out his father's business.) He can hire other people to help. He can film and learn to do business at the same time."

12/27/2012: During the Doomsday period (12/21), Steven Ma was in the US holding two concerts (2 shows in San Francisco (12/22) and 1 show in Los Angeles (12/23). He sang many classic songs including Shanghai Bund, Return of the Condor Lovers, etc., and his own series themesongs including those for 'Where the Legend Begins', 'Perish in the Name of Love', and 'The Life and Times of a Sentinel'.

Steven's shows went smoothly with fans displaying great enthusiasm. The atmosphere pumped up with wave after wave of frenzy from the fans, but unexpectedly in the Los Angeles concert, an incident happened. When Steven got off stage to shake hands with the fans on the floor, besides being taken advantage of by ardent fans (抽水), his face and head touched intimately, he was also mobbed by fans jostling for a handshake with him. Maybe because of the fans' frenzied grabbing, Steven thumb suddenly spurted blood (爆拇指), and both his hands were later found badly skinned and marked with red scratches. Steven did not mind the fans’ display of ardor. Luckily the mishap is offset by gain. The fans in the audience chased after Steven to give him big lai si. (lucky red packets). When asked about his hands, Steven chuckled and jested that New Year was not even here yet but his hand already saw 'red', for sure he will have luck on New Year's Day.

Steven said: "Very happy my performances went smoothly. (But your hands got hurt wo?) No problem; it's fine! The fans here had not seen me for a long time, so naturally when they saw me they were very enthusiastic. They were overly polite (hak hei) - gave me big 'lai si' (lucky red packet). I told them New Year’s Eve still a few days away but they said the few days difference don’t matter. Since they get to see me now they want to give me the lai si in advance.”

Seeing the warm and fervent reception in Steven's concerts, the event organizer, Janice, immediately invited Steven to hold more concerts in other US cities.

When queried about his plans for next year, Steven says: “First of all, good wishes to everybody for the upcoming year. For myself, I’m presently collecting new songs. In fact, I've just finished composing and writing my first song ever. I’m also learning how to direct and produce series. Hopefully, my acting and singing careers will advance together.”

UPDATED: Steven Ma To Film a HK series next year

Updates in brown
馬浚偉預告明年返港拍劇

Yesterday Steven Ma was at an event in the US.  When asked about TVB inviting him back to the nest to film a series, he said: "Actually all along there have always been various tv stations contacting me.  Indeed, I've plans to return to Hong Kong in the mid-year to film a Hong Kong tv series but as to which tv station I will end up with is not convenient to reveal just yet.

Steven Ma Refuses to return to the nest to film series.

Recently, Steven Ma flew over to Los Angeles, US, for his two Christmas concerts.  Earlier, it was predictable that the Yellowstone National Park volcano in the US would explode, when asked if his family was worried about him going to the US, Steven said: Both my family and I are neither worried nor believe. (in doomsday prediction)  True that before my trip, some friends did ask me how come I still go to the US, how come I'm not nervous?  Of course, I don't believe the doomsday prediction. I wasn't worried at all because if natural catastrophe were to happen, people can't escape no matter where they are. But reality is such that we must protect and take good care of our earth."

Lately, a weekly tabloid reported that TVB executive, Catherine Tsang, has plans to produce a new series, and that she has invited Steven to return to the nest to film the series.  When asked about the rumor, Steven says: "I did not hear about my filming this series.  Return to TVB? Actually all along there have always been various tv stations contacting me, and indeed I have plans to return to HK to shoot a tv series. But as to which tv station I will end up collaborating with, it is not convenient to disclose just yet.  Tsang Jie is my benefactor and TVB is my maternal home, we maintain a good relationship.  When all is set and confirmed, I will duly reveal my plans to the public, until then, thank you for everybody's concern."

Tamaya:
There, straight from the horse's mouth. Steven knows nothing of the reported series. The rumor is probably just TVB using both Kevin and Steven to publicize the series.

Anyway, in past interview videos Steven always said he will shoot a series in HK next year but the news write-up always replaced his "HK" tv series to "TVB" series.

From observing Steven and Miu Siu Ching's weibo interaction, there is a higher chance that he will collaborate with MSC than TVB.  Because of his loyalty to TVB, Steven most probably will not collaborate with HKTV anytime soon.

Steven Ma and Peggy Liu's 12/22/2012 concert.

12/21/2012 Steven Ma and Peggy Liu at a press conference in Los Angeles to promote their 12/22 concert in Para Casino. Steven reveals that besides his familiar Cantonese and Mandarin songs he will also sing some of his themesongs including Where the legend begins and The Life and Times of a Sentinel.  Daddy Good Deeds is his last TVB series but he reveals that he will return TVB to film a series in April next year.

Aside: 12/21/2012 news
The rumor mill has it that since Kevin Cheng has rejected Catherine Tsang's offer for the role of 西门吹雪 (Ximen Chuxue) in the supposedly grand production《寒山潛龍》series co-produced by Catherine and Leung Ka Shu (梁家树) to be filmed in March 2013, the latter has turned to Steven for help to take up that role.   In the 2013 sales presentation, the series《寒山潛龍》(Cold Mountain, Hidden Dragon) cast  Kenneth Ma as Ximen, and his fellow co-stars are Raymond Wong, Kenny Wong, Aimee Chan and Priscilla Wong. (see hyn5 link for sales presentation and filming videos)

I truly hope the above news is not true as the female cast is so weak especially with Aimee Chan as female lead. I personally can't stand Aimee and her acting. Also, the series looks like a dud.

Steven Ma's Testimony to Christ 2012 Nov 2

video with transcript - Ascribing his sisters' strong faith for his own conversion to Christianity

Life’s Anxiety and Security – Steven Ma
It has been two years since our last interview with well known artist, Steven Ma. In this interview, this reporter took advantage of this opportunity to have Steven shared some hitherto unpublicized personal experiences and feelings. Hence, through this magazine Steven reveals publicly for the first time his conversion journey to Christianity.

In his 20 odd years of taking care of his cancer late mother since very young, Steven's life was filled with all kinds of anxieties including suffering depression from losing his mother in 1999.

But now he finds much security in his faith, and a rationale reason for gratitude on death.

When friends found out that I was going to interview Steven soon, all asked me this very same question: “Isn’t Steven a Buddhist?”

Let Steven himself respond to the question: “Since young I attended Catholic schools. When I grew up I was an atheist all along. But many people thought I believed in Kun Yam (Chinese Goddess of Mercy); actually they misconstrued. Even my mother when alive was not a believer of Kun Yam, just that she was very fond of Kun Yam’s countenance so collected Kun Yam figurines as an art collection. So whenever I was outstation for work, I always bought a Kun Yam souvenir for my mother. At that time, the house was filled with Kun Yam souvenirs so friends thought we believed in Kun Yam. Actually we weren’t.”

SARS Evinced the Fearlessness of Doctors
When Steven was six years old, his mother unfortunately was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal (nose-throat) cancer. At junior high, Steven had already shouldered the care-taking responsibility of his mother. Having to tackle and resolve problems at such young age on his own cultivated his ‘believe in myself’ personality, therefore, he had never felt the need to follow any religious faith, until the year of SARS when his Christian 2nd older sister uttered a statement that changed his whole outlook on life.

“My 2nd older sister and 2nd brother-in-law are devout Christians. 2nd sister is a nurse while 2nd brother-in-law is a physical therapist. 2nd sister, of course, had hoped that I would one day believe in Christ but they rarely imposed their faith on me. The first time I was moved by their faith would have to be back in 2003, the year of SARS. At the time the situation was truly dire, many doctors and nurses couldn't endure it so one after another left the hospital. But of course, there were many who willingly stayed back, and some of them even contacted SARS and unfortunately died from it. When I saw how dangerous the epidemic was, I became panicky and called up my 2nd sister who was on duty that day.”

Steven said to 2nd sister: “Don’t work today. If something happens to you, what am I to do?”

Listening to her younger brother who loved her deeply, she replied: “My faith will support me.”

Steven’s voice became agitated, he said: “That’s not enough wo! Dr. Tse Yuen Yee was also a Christian but she was infected anyway. I’m not asking you for anything but at this moment would you at least let me as your younger brother be a bit selfish?”

2nd sister solemnly said to her younger brother: “Steven, if everybody thinks like you then every medical personnel would listen to his/her family member and leave the hospital. If one day you contacted SARS, or that father was infected with SARS, then who would take care of you both?”

At hearing his 2nd sister’s response Steven instantly got goose bumps; fighting back anxiety he said no more.

Steven said: “She said: “This inner strength came from God, it made me reflect deeply on my faith, which is the spirit of self-sacrificing for others."  At that moment, I didn’t know how to change her mind because she had a valid justification.”

Felt God’s Son’s Love in Movie
In 2004, the movie, The Passion of Christ, by renowned Hollywood actor, Mel Gibson, finally got on the silver screen. The movie depicts the last twelve hours of Jesus Christ’s tribulations before he died. The cast used Latin, Hebrew, and Aramaic (Jesus’ mother tongue) in their dialogs, effectively drawing the audience into the scenes as if they were personally experiencing  the whole drama.  Audiences all over the world were deeply moved.

He said: “One day I rented the movie home to watch. When I saw Jesus betrayed, saw him carrying the cross making the painful trek, and being crucified on the cross, my tears flowed unbidden. The movie depicted these scenes very realistically, and moreover, the actor portraying Jesus truly matched the image of Jesus in my heart. At the time I did not believe in Christ yet. As I watched I thought: “For real somebody truly went through all this? So pitiful! There is truly such a person (Jesus)?” If that is true then it is not just a movie but something that has a direct relationship with my life, because a real person actually sacrificed himself to wash over the worldly sins. Moreover, when he was being crucified on the cross he still pleaded with His heavenly Father to forgive those who had wronged Him for they knew not what they did. When I heard these words I fell apart. If I could meet Jesus of His time I would be a very happy person because that person though knowing I had sinned was still willing to use “for he did not know he has sinned” excuse to forgive me and even sacrificed his life for me.”

Afterwards, Steven happened to encounter some fellow Christian brothers and sisters from HK Artists Christian Fellowship, and had listened to numerous sermons from different pastors, allowing him to further understand Christianity. About four years ago Steven prayed for guidance for enlightenment, later he told his 2nd sister and pastor of his conversion decision.

Found Peace in God’s Embrace
Believing in Christ for four years, Steven is most happy he now has an older brother to share his burdens with.

He said: “Among my parents' 5 children, I’m the only son. I think a man has to shoulder all responsibility, so from young I seldom shared my troubles with family members. After believing in Christ it’s like having an older brother listening to my outpouring of feelings. I had always wished for an older brother, to be able to lay my burdens on him. God eases my hurt and wounds; my life no longer lonely. Hereafter, I have a listener, a God who understands my feelings and is tolerant of my flaws and weaknesses. Before him I can completely admit my own helplessness. This gives me much comfort.”

In March, last year, Japan had a 9 point magnitude big earthquake that in turn caused a devastating tsunami; the event shocked the whole world. After watching the news on tv Steven had a nightmare.

He said: “My house faces the street Princess Margaret Rd. That night I dreamed that there was a huge wave over Princess Margaret Rd (公主道) (tn: in Ho Man Tin). I became panicky. At that moment I suddenly heard a voice speaking in Mandarin said to me: “Child, don’t be scared! Everything’s fine!” The huge wave immediately subsided. And the dream ended. I went right back to sleep. The next day when I woke up I felt very relaxed. This dream had given me the security I never had in the past.”

The Lord truly understood what Steven most wanted in his whole life. From young, having to take care of his cancer mother Steven lived in constant fear and anxiety everyday. He constantly worried that should his mother suddenly have a relapse he might not be able to react quick enough, thus making her suffer even more. This cultivated in him a heightened sense of danger, and imbued in him a sense of insecurity.

He said: “In all things, I still hope for the best but even more, I prepare for the worst. My thoughts veered very much towards catastrophe. Even today, there are things I cannot change. Like whenever I’m inside a plane I worry. Worry that the airflow may affect the flight. Before believing in Christ I would become anxious and would take all kinds of travel sickness pills. Once inside the plane I would instantly fall asleep. But now before boarding the plane I’ll say a prayer to God for a safe trip. But if accident happens I’ll tell Him I don’t fear death, as everybody will die once sooner or later, just that the dying be quick and not be drawn out torturous before going to the heavenly home.

“Also, when staying in a hotel, the higher the room is the greater the anxiety. So I always check out the emergency escape route in case of fire. That’s just my personality. Before believing in Christ I've had even more anxieties. Actually having a heightened sense of danger is not a bad thing, just that in my case it may be exaggerated thus putting myself in a constant vigilant mode. But what to do, it was cultivated in me since young.”

So what had happened to young Steven to make him think that life is littered with dangers?

Steven Accompanied Mother through Adversity.

Steven was six years old when his mother was diagnosed with cancer and during that period she had had three relapses. She was 48 years old when she passed away after losing the 22-year battle with cancer. She had always lived with Steven, who together with his father took total responsibility to care for her.  audio ref para#3: Steven's emotional recount of his mother's death (revealed for the 1st time the deep-seated secret of his guilt over her death.

Steven said: “Mother’s cancer first two relapses got worse each time it happened. And each time she lost more of her faculties after a relapse until in the end she was left with only one eye with blurry vision at that. The senses of taste, hearing, and smell as well as the neck flexibility were all atrophied. Those past 22 years I accumulated an abundance of anxieties and fear because Mother would suddenly go into convulsion, (tn: or suddenly spurt blood ) or suddenly passed out so in the middle of the night Father would come knocking on my door to have me sent Mother to the emergency care in the hospital. Or I would suddenly receive a hospital phone call informing me of my mother’s health condition such and such. That was our daily life. If she was “just a little bit off” I immediately thought ahead of what could happen to her and to be prepared. So I lived everyday in constant anxiety and fear. Now, I refuse to have a telephone installed in my bedroom because I don’t want it ringing in the middle of the night, nor do I like people knocking on my bedroom door (in the middle of the night).”

In 1999 Steven’s mother passed away. Missing his mother greatly Steven slipped into depression, (tn: and even considered suicide) and after a prolonged period he gradually came back up from the pit. Reminiscing on his mother, Steven abruptly clenched his fists, and said: “When Mother was alive, caring for her had become my life goal. When she left I felt as if I'd lost my whole heart. ” (tn: ref audio #3: and then there is the festering guilt that he had hastened her death because she gave in to his plea to take the surgery despite her intial reluctance.)

Family always holds the first spot in Steven’s heart. Though not from a wealthy family, his family of seven was very close knitted. Growing up in Sham Shiu Po Pak Tin Estate, he and his sisters were close to each other as they played together in the public park playing the seesaws and slides. When grown, his young little sister was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. His 2nd sister close to childbirth got infected during her pregnancy, subsequently impairing her newborn son’s brain. And then there was his mother years’ long torture by cancer. (tn: And his maternal grandmother suffered some kind of illness and like his late mother also spurted blood in his presence.) Steven would rather all those things have befallen him instead. (tn: He omitted to mention his own heart disorder.)

Hope to look past life and death
Having taken care of his mother for 22 odd years, Steven is quite knowledgeable in nutritious food and basic medicinal remedies. Years ago he even published a book entitled: “I am a sick patient’s family” sharing with his readers his experience in caring for his sick mother. In recent years, Steven was also invited to an organ donors organization to share his outlook on life and death.

Recalling his mother, Steven became misty-eyed but still he hopes to transmit through different platforms a positive outlook towards sickness and death. He said: “First, don’t fear death; 2nd: cherish your family. Why don’t fear death? Because everybody will die one day. No matter how scared, still will die in the end. If live with fear everyday then it is the same as never having truly lived. Before believing in Christ, death to me is a deep sleep. After believing in Christ I know I will go to a better place,  and will reunite with brothers and sisters. Feel more peaceful thinking thus. I’ve already told my family and friends. When I die they must, must, send me off in a Christian memorial service.

“I once attended a Christian funeral service. Felt very peaceful. God tells us that the believers will return to the heavenly home, and will live in a better place and will no longer feel mortal pain, but will return to the Lord’s embrace. This gives me a comforting reason when grieving for a death.”

Steven thinks that since everybody will die someday, when alive then should live a good life, and also at the same time take responsibility for one’s deeds. As actor he said: “Don’t look down on movies or tv shows because they do impart an educational value. Every time I acted in a series I know I was embodying an educational character conveying different information to the audiences, so I will take responsibility for my series and will not participate in series that I think have no values. This has always been my principle. Which is why I’ve no regrets with any of my series. If in tv series production, we can maintain this kind of attitude and be steadfast in our stance, we can disseminate our God's given ideals.”

Steven Ma is proud of Sham Shui Po

@SingPao 2012-10-08 00:35:00

马浚伟以深水埗仔为荣

Last night Steven Ma was invited by a gold and jewelry store to attend its 39th anniversary dinner. He sang two songs on stage to celebrate the mid-autumn festival with the guests.

Steven's unexpected presence on stage caused a furor among the guests.  The frenzy conduct among the large group of si nai wrangling to take pictures of him can rival that of a younger generation fans.   When Steven finished his performance, incessant shouts of "encore" rocked the venue.  When Steven stepped down the stage he was instantly surrounded by the waiting fans requesting to have pictures taken with him.  Among them were some really young kids,  truly people from ages of 3 years old all the way to 80 year-old were all attracted by him.  Meanwhile, besides the constant yelling of him being "leng jai" (handsome),  there were also many who asked when they could see a new Apprentice Chef on tv?

Steven, who grew up in Sham Shui Po for twenty odd years, said he was very happy to be able to perform here tonight: "First of all, this is where  I grew up in, so it feels very warm and familiar; second, this jewelry store owner has always appreciated my songs and tv series, and supports me a lot.  Also, upon seeing how happy these people from my old neighborhood at seeing me here; actually I was even happier than them.   My kindergarten, elementary and middle schools were all here. This kind of connection can never be forgotten. I'm proud of Sham Shui Po. "

UPDATED: Reconciled with ex-GF, Steven Ma Happy at work and personal life

馬浚偉同女友復合 在公在私好快樂
wenweipo 2012-10-02

Steven Ma (Ma Jai) as the host of Apprentice Chef, a TVB cooking show, has left quite an impression in the public mind.  A few days ago, Foo Lum Group (富臨集團 Restaurants) invited him to be their spokesperson of lobster banquet for their company.

In the commercial, Steven spent at least 10 hours to film the commercial in which he showcased six different flavored lobster dishes starting from breakfast all the way to dinner.  In the restaurant he kept busy; from cooking in the kitchen to catching lobsters from the fish tank.  Though this is the first time doing this kind of commercial, he was unfazed as he without much ado caught a 5 catty (tn: wow! 5 catty??) lobster from inside the tank.  He laughed and said he felt like he was filming a cooking show.

Even though the work was prolonged, Steven displayed no sign of exhaustion. In fact, off camera, Steven transformed into a ‘mischievous’ master chef making the live lobster into a ‘multi shape-changer’. Calling the live lobster a mutant, he played with it; now saying he’s going to perform magic; now jesting he’s helping the lobster loosening its bones. He played with the lobster from the tank all the way into the kitchen, his antics greatly enlivening the atmosphere.  With the shooting going smoothly, Steven luck out with this commercial whereby he got to partake 6 lobsters cooked 6 different ways and to earn money at the same time, truly killing two birds with one stone.

He said: Today's meals were very scrumptious because the lobsters were cooked 6 different methods, and I had to eat them all.  Not only did I get to eat them but also the fee was not bad. This is my first time doing this kind of spokesperson.  Because in the past I did a cooking tv program so people assumed that I've have culinary knowledge.  Indeed I do know how to cook. My specialties are seafood, stir fried beef strips and some other home cooked dishes.

Steven has recently admitted of reconciling with ex-girlfriend, and there were even rumors circulating of their upcoming wedding. When queried, Steven graciously admits their reconciliation denies any upcoming wedding bells: "It's true that my girlfriend and I have indeed reconciled, our relationship is now very stable, but who knows how it will develop in the future. Anyway, for now, I'm very happy in both my work and personal life!"

When asked if there will be a sponsorship of lobsters for his wedding banquet, Steven laughs uproariously and says: “That would be nice if so, but I'm not going to get married just because of the sponsorship. So, if they sponsor me a hundred lobsters, I'll then host a 100 table banquet?”

Steven says that the next two or three years will indeed bring big changes but to his career. He hopes to diversify his career development, and to be exposed to different areas. There are reports of Steven experimenting with script writing and opening his own production studio.

He admits: “It’s true, but it (series production) has been postponed to next year. It was originally scheduled to commence (production) this year but after the negotiation was completed, (I) realized some situations are still iffy, so will wait until the web has been intricately interconnected before going full force ahead. Although there is a group of investors behind me but still must be meticulous with the work, can’t let these people down. It’s fine if losing my own (money) but with the investors’ funds, the pressure is greater, so you can’t be too careful here.”

Steven stresses that his position is still that of an artist identity because: “At the end of the day I still love being an actor the most, so I welcome anybody to contact me to film a series; any locality, any TV station, so long the script is good.”

He says all these time he has been screening mainland scripts, "I'm no longer a newcomer, so have to be very careful with choosing the script, only then can film a series with substance."

Steven will spend most of his time in mainland, but he says in any case he will set aside time to return to Hong Kong to film tv series.  Steven further discloses that the mainland series he filmed earlier this year, “The Legend of Yuan Empire Founder”, will be broadcasted on CCTV next year, as for the other mainland series, “Yuan Yang Pei”, it will be broadcasted in one of the 4 major satellite tv channels.
