GH Steven Ma's costumes 8/22-8/23 2014

Thank you to those who made the effort to snap photos and upload them to share with fans. I know first hand just how difficult and distracting it could be to snap photos while watching a concert. Below are selected photos to show off Steven's costumes worn in his 3-day concert. Personally, besides the traditional and staid suit and tie costumes, I wish Steven would be more flamboyant, bold and diverse with his stage costumes style and colors, heck, why not thrown in a Chinese robe with hat when singing his Shanghai Bund medley or dressed like Sam Siu in a zhong shan tunic when singing Heaven's Will. Steven always looks so good in those two period costumes so show off that scholarly and elegant side of him to the fullest, at the same time breaking the monotony of dark and white suits.

Also, in future concerts besides displaying his elegance, charms, playfulness, spontaneity and the gift of gab, he can also reinvent his stage persona by displaying the sultry and sexy side of him - dare to do a Latin Dance number dressed in a slinky form-fitting costume  (scroll to SM-Sonija vid or samba) or a smooth elegant waltz attired in his ballroom tuxedo. (ref.waltz mv)  Anyway, of all his live singing performances I've watched online to date, I love his youtube愛之初体驗; fanblog the most because his exuberance doing doing that little dance number is so obvious therefore very contagious even thru my computer screen;  I'd love to have watched him perform that live on stage.

He looks absolutely gorgeous! My heart almost stopped beating. Thoroughly entertaining performance. Love his quick-witted humor on stage, really lively, very entertaining. Love his thoughtfulness on selecting some different songs for the second night so those who have attended the first show had something to look forward to, also different jokes, nothing stale. And how I love the way he talks with a drawl, really sexy, given his voice! Plus I managed to get a glimpse of him leaving the venue after the show, right from the main entrance after the crowd had dispersed, about 11:30PM the first night, 11:20PM (the second night), saw him leaving both the first night and second night too. No fanfare, in a simple polo and shorts (black on the first night, almost mistook him for one of the crew, and red polo and white shorts on the second night), just a very brisk walk to the waiting van by himself, not surrounded by his entourage, too fast for a quick photo. Two different nights, two different experience. Now I'm kicking myself for not having bought tickets for the last show tonight.

Btw, I believe Steven was kidding about the "terima kasih" thing, it was a deliberate move on his part to draw laughs from the audience, cos he actually said it as "talima kasi". That's why he's really good at endearing himself to the audience. He also spoke a little in English, Teochew and Hokkien on the first night. (tn: Ref news report) Thinking he had the Malaysian language down pat, Steven steps onto the stage and greets his audience: “Dai ka hou, Terima kasih!” (Audience: That’s “thank you!”) It’s not“How are you?”  

What's enjoyable about both the shows was that he took good care to ensure that the acts was not a fully rehearsed, and the fact that there were many spontaneous moments in each show. The first show included a lot more sharing of his personal life which made the audience warm up to him right away, and he managed to make the second show like a continuation from the first, as if the audience from yesterday's show were like old friends.

Tamaya, my English not so good, so im writing it in Mandarin and mix mix ya..haha..等待了几个月的日子终于到来了，那种心情真的不懂如何形容，真的好兴奋！可能是他启发了我对人生的改观和态度。第一首歌“想飞”掀起了一时的轰动。。他真的好帅，超有型。无论是唱慢歌或快歌都那么的好听，尤其是唱那首我等待已久的歌“李香兰”，哇哈！我整个人都淘醉在他的歌声中，连我手上那的手机都无发动了。。呆了。。马仔真的好会说话，当然嘛， 他当过司仪， 说话难不倒他。在说话的过程， 带点幽默， 又有点调皮， 很逗人开心。 我发觉他唱歌时比较喜欢靠左边， 应该是有来自香港的朋有来支持他吧， 不过， 还好， 我有我朋友sponsor 我的营光棒， 每当他走向右边时， 我就立刻举起我的营光棒，他就看过来， 爽死我了！当他谈起去年的一部戏 ‘守业者’时， 因为要介绍下一首歌 “天意”， 我就大声的喊：“潘家杨！”， 他就说： 不如直接叫我“三少”好了， 哈哈 ！还有， 我发觉现场大多数是uncle and auntie only, 大家都比较静，没那么轰动， 没有我想像中的轟动。。 我等的等，我手中的礼物还没给他， 等待的是一个好机会， 我告诉Amy当他走向右边时， 我们马上就冲上去给他。可是当我们跑向前面时， 他好专注的唱歌， 好像没看见我们似的， 后来我们就退后几步， 刚好VVIP有two empty seat, we sat down and manage to get few snapshot of him, but my hand was shaking because he so handsome, just can't believe he was in front of me. After that he ran down to shake hand with the audience, at last I managed to pass my gift to him but no chance shake his hand le.. Overall, I enjoyed the show very much, but I hate and kicking myself for not attending his 2nd day show because one day show is not enough!! He told audience that he will come to Malaysia next year and will collaborated with Susanna in a drama. After the show, we still don't want to go back, we waited waited outside the hall, waiting for him to come out, at last he come out with casual wear stripe shirt with beige/white colour pant walking very cutely to the van. We (with Amy) met one senior lady, ran together up to his hotel which got to take 5 times escalator..We just tried, but we think he will reach the hotel first than us.. We are too late, when we reached there, we waited and asked around people there, the staff there said he already went in to the hotel room.. haiz!!

Steven Ma and Susanna Ma have successfully concluded their 3-day concert (8/21-8/23) at Genting Highlands in Malaysia; the audiences' response was overwhelming.  As the 2nd night of the concert (Friday) happened on the designated "Malaysian national day of mourning" commemorating the arrival of the MH17 crash victims' remains in Kuala Lumpur, a moment of silence observance lasting a minute was held at the end of the concert, after which the duo belted out "Tomorrow will be better"《明天會更好》as encouragement to their audience.

When on stage, Steven and Susanna called out to their audience for a moment of silence, the audience instantly quieted down, Steven said: "I saw how earlier the audience was in such a happy mood but suddenly became saddened. Also when reading the news everyday, there are so many reports of tragedy so I want to release some positive energy into the world, thus for this Genting Highlands concert I selected these songs《爸士》,《漫步人生路》and《明天會更好》for their positive messages."    

This Genting Highlands concert was Steven and Susanna's first time collaboration. Because Steven knows how to hype up the atmosphere plus his quick responses, the audience became more and more fervent.  Steven said: "We are both very happy with our collaboration. We want to work together again, and hope to have the opportunity next year to film a series as an older sister and younger brother, respectively."

Susanna said that she honestly did not expect Steven with his gentleman looks is so playful in private, regardless on stage or backstage, where Steven is, laughter's there too. She said: "Steven is a very happy, very sunshine person but when he talks about serious subjects he comes across very mature and his words have substance. His age and his behavior are totally uncorrelated " Susanna was very happy that their 3-day concert sold out every night but was sorry for those who made the special trip to Genting Highlands for the last show but couldn't get in because it was sold out.

Prologue: Note: Steven and Susanna Kwan's Malaysian Genting Highlands Concert Day 1 Thursday (8/21/2014) opened to a full house and ended its last show on a high note with another sold-out concert. The auditorium seats about 3000. Apparently per jv entertainment weibo, Steven and Susanna's concert is the first time ever that GH Resort World held a 3-day concert. The concert is organized as a kick-off event for GH RW's 50th anniversary next year.

Oddly enough Susanna Kwan and Steven Ma’s first time collaboration is not to film a tv series together but to hold a joint concert in Malaysia instead.  Steven said it is his first time holding a concert in Malaysia.  The duo besides singing also invited random fans to get on the stage to sing, among them was a woman dressed in a polka-dot outfit, at seeing her Steven jested, "Siu Fung Jie is here!" (tn: in reference to HK singer, Paula Tsui 徐小鳳 in her 'famed' polka-dot stage costumes)

Thinking he had the Malaysian language down pat, Steven steps onto the stage and greets his audience: “Dai ka hou, Terima kasih!” (Audience: That’s “thank you!”) It’s not“How are you?”  Coached by the audience, Steven greets his audience, “Apa khabar?”  Seeing that the group of randomly selected uncles and aunties were unafraid to sing on stage, Steven quips to Susanna: “They sang so well, we should leave!” Susanna says: “We called them onto the stage to give them a present, but since they could sing so well they should give us presents instead.”  When presenting his signed photos to them, a fan asks Steven if the photos were taken when he was 18 years old, eliciting Steven’s pleased response: “They were taken yesterday.”  When a male fan requests Steven to sing the theme song of the TV series, “The Pride of Chaozhou 《我来自潮州》, Steven chuckles and says: “That’s an ATV tv series, don’t get confused. Haha! Not that it matters!”

Even though this is Steven’s first time performing on stage in Malaysia, his series of quips amused his audience greatly making them happy. After singing a series of tv theme songs, Steven then asks the audience if they liked his singing, he says: “If like, then applause loudly; if not, applause even louder. Haha!”

Steven has been in the industry for 20 years but he still maintains his looks very well, he says: “Still can deceive people ba! (tn: appearance)  In 1993 I participated in a singing competition. When debuted as singer, I released three music albums but they did not sell well. Then Lee Tim Sing and Catherine Tsang asked me to do a screen test for a tv series.  I didn’t know how to act then.  I was a singing competition champion but I had failed 43 times prior. Gradually my focus shifted from singing to filming mostly ancient period dramas because they thought that the shape of my head was suitable for ancient dramas.” When asked about the change in his collaboration mode with TVB, Steven says with gratitude towards TVB:  “Even though our collaboration mode is different but you all still can see me. TVB is my alma mater.”

Recalling singing Jackie Cheung’s “Lee Heong Lan”《李香兰》, Steven narrates: “At the time, my teacher said if not handsome but wanted to win then must pick a difficult song to sing”.   Purposely a leading remark to fish for compliments from the audience, Steven tries again and says "I know I’m not handsome" but the audience remains silent, so he says coyly: “Give some response ma!  I’d hoped to elicit your saying ‘not so’. You all don’t know how to sweet-talk...”  After that he mentions he has released a music album last year and this year too, and that he has written a separate song for his parents. Tonight he especially sings the song written for his father,《爸士》.

THE stars have finally aligned for Susanna Kwan and Steven Ma who will perform on the same stage for the first time this month at Genting International Convention Centre in First World Hotel, Genting Highlands. Ma, who is popular for roles in TVB series such as Where The Legend Begins, Perish In The Name Of Love and, more recently, Storm In A Cocoon, will mesmerise with his timeless tunes starting from the time when he first broke into the entertainment scene after winning an annual singing competition in Hong Kong. He also holds the record for winning the most number of Favourite Character awards awarded by TVB.

My thanks to all youtube uploaders, much appreciated.

The next song up is "Moon represents my love".  Because I had so identified this song with Teresa Deng's soft, gentle and utterly feminine voice I thought the saccharine sweet melody as a woman's song, therefore unsuited to a masculine vocal, and I've listened to quite a few including Steven's past rendition. But surprisingly I actually like Steven's modified version, which departs from his past soft and gentle crooning style of singing "Moon". His version here has a distinctive varied pitch modulation unlike the song's original tune- sweet melody but unvaried modulation. Usually I dislike changes to a beloved song's tune but I really like how Steven sang "Moon" with pizazz - not as a mincing sweet-nothings crooning but as a masculine love serenade to his audience; I totally buy into it.

不了情 is an old favorite song of my grandma's and I've watched the old movie with her too so again I was biased towards a female voice singing this song. A classic woman's heartbreak song, I thought the song was not suitable for a male singer. Although Steven did an excellent job in this rendition I still prefer original female singer's heartrending slower tempo rendition. But when I listened to Steven sing the song live in his deep masculine voice imbued with emotion I was totally drawn into his song, entranced. While his 不了情 is sang with a man's melancholy, his 新不了情 is sang with a man's heartbreak.  Steven truly has a most wonderful bass voice.  As for the rest of his songs, I've heard them many times online but there is simply no surpassing the feeling of being actually serenaded by Steven live - it's an experience felt not just heard.

Had I been less in a daze I would recall more details than those here. It's like how someone said "Oh, that was SO good" but when pressed for details as to what SO good about it, she/he could not pinpoint the exact reason why,  just that it was; that's me. lol!  What stick in my mind are my euphoric feeling, the exhilarating atmosphere, and my contentment of being in Steven's presence listening to him sing. Had I not written down the list of songs sung during my rare moments of lucidity I probably would have a hard time recalling them now. lol!

Unexpectedly I got to go to Steven Ma & Niki Chow’s Mother’s Day Concert  held in Caesars Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, USA, after all.  (2014 May 11 Sunday 1 am) . With nothing better to do as we are not interested in gambling we decided to wait out the 30 minutes before show time inside the Circus Maximus Theater  - truth be told I was just too antsy to do anything else or be anywhere else.

Steven Ma wasn't well in Atlantic City concert, thanks friends & fans for their concern

Steven Ma was invited by Caesars Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, USA, as the celebrity performer for its Mother’s Day program. (sic. along with Niki Chow)  Given his extensive performing experiences in the US, this concert should be a breeze for him but unfortunately that was not the case. The night before his Hong Kong departure Steven did not get much sleep because of a stomach ache and diarrhea. He suspected it must be something he ate that night. He said: “I've had bad stomachaches before but none as severe as this. I suspect it's caused by something I ate the night before departure. But since I had to get on a plane I could only take some Chinese herbal tea and pain medicine for stomach ache for relief.  In flight, I only drank water and dared not eat anything.  I thought I would get better after resting for 10 hours or more inside the plane but when it landed I was still sick."

May 11 16:47  The concert has ended, my thanks to all who were there for their support and enthusiasm. I'm very happy! Thank you to friends and little piggies for their concern. My health has improved, at least it did not affect my performance (actually it did a little la. This got to be the most times I messed up my lyrics.) But, I'm truly grateful to have successfully completed the show!  Aside, I want to send in my belated Mother's Day's best wishes; wishing mothers everywhere peace, good health and happiness, and also hope my mother in heaven heard me sing「倦」for her. May 11 22:40 I've had diarrhea for two days consecutively so of course become thinner! Don't worry, I'm fine now after my sleep. 

May 10 10:35   I already had a stomach ache on the eve of departure, and it got worse when I got to America. So painful I could hardly stand up straight. Fortunately, I've brought along some relief medicines. Today, the condition has improved. The show is tomorrow, hope the pain will leave soon! Praying! ..p.s. did not drink any coffee or coke; food intake went down; milk drinking went up. Suddenly thin again...

May 8 17:34  Despite a fitful sleep last night the eyes looked even bigger. haha! Getting ready to leave for the Atlantic City concert, hope everything goes well!

note: From the wenweipo news report, looks like Steven had a bad case of food poisoning - bad enough when it happened at home but must worse in Steven's case.

Interesting tidbit == Of the scheduled events/concerts in this casino, the ticket prices for Steven & Shiny Concert are way higher.

A fan in the audience said that Steven already looks younger than his age on photos and on screen but in real life he looks even younger than that.

Fala Chen tells Steven Ma to earn less money

A few days ago (Mar 19th) Steven Ma was hospitalized for health problem. After resting for a day he returned to work. Yesterday before departing for San Francisco USA for his two-show concert, this reporter asked Steven if he was worried about flying here and there so soon after his hospitalization. He said:

"I've brought along my meds and will follow the doctor's order to not overexert myself. When I was in the hospital my blood pressure spiked up. But when I was discharged it went down to systolic 96 and diastolic 60, reversely becoming low blood pressure, so when I get back to Hong Kong I need to do another physical examination.  I've received many phone calls from friends including Evergreen Mak, Stephen Wong Ka Lok, Yeung Ming, Tavia Yeung, Dexter Yeung, Linda Chung and Fala Chen inquiring about my health. Made me feel very warm indeed.  Fala Chen was so naughty, she actually said: "Ah gor, (big brother) don't you work so hard to earn money lah; earn more money, more wealth, weaker health. You can share your earnings with me, I help you spend it."  I quipped: "Now I've to work even hard to earn money to pay for my medicines lah!"

When the news of Steven's hospitalization spread, the concert organizer was very concern of his health condition.  Steven's doctor had advised him to rest but because of the good faith issue Steven decided to go ahead with his concert.

When asked the cause of his illness Steven said: "The official report is not out yet but my heart's problem is a chronic condition.  Also, years ago when filming "Change of Destiny《天機算》my right eye was injured by a horse's head, and shifted my eyeball slightly. So that day when I suddenly felt dizzy and my eyes saw flashing lights, I was worried I had retinal detachment so I immediately went to the hospital. From the doctor's preliminary examination, even though there was no retinal detachment but because of its past injury, right eye's vitreous has signs of atrophy."

Neither Steven nor his HK manager Sandy Lau (despite my weibo query a month ago to her) has said anything about this concert, never mind confirmed it. I've to say I really can't understand the low profile over this concert, unless Steven is still uncertain of his schedule despite the concert coming up in just two weeks' time.
