Sentinel - Nip Dor Bo

Characteristics:

Background:
From young he is into martial arts, and is frequently outraged by injustice done to neighbors. At the time, fortuitously, the imperial court permits Han people to become imperial guards screened through an entrance examination. Dor Bo, via a circuitous route, finally accomplished his goal. Thus, he belatedly finds out the true identity of his recent new friend, who turns out to be 2nd Prince, Fuk Quen. Entering the imperial guard camp for the first time, Dor Bo discovers its people locked in constant strife and intrigues; furthermore, they will use all ways and means to move up in position. Fortunately Dor Bo has Fuk Quen to assist him. Their friendship steadily increases over time.

Fuk Quen discovers that his imperial father, Shunji, has left him a will before he died, so he investigates this matter with Dor Bo. During their investigation, Dor Bo’s family and friends are all being mysteriously killed. Dor Bo suspects Emperor Hong Hei and Empress Dowager Hou Zhong as culprits behind the deaths. Yielding to Fuk Quen’s request, Dor Bo awaits his chance to take actions against them.

However, during his contact with Emperor Hong Hei for a period of time, Dor Bo finds him to be a sagacious ruler. And that Hou Zhong’s actions are all for the good of the Qing Dynasty. Thus he is caught in between right and wrong. And meanwhile, Dor Bo finds Fuk Quen’s behavior to very suspicious…

Relentless and ceaseless intrigues and strifes abound inside the palace; simply put: men fight for power; women fight for favoritism. Right vs wrong, there is no definite separation. There are only the viewpoints of the involved parties, the angles of perspectives, and the motives of the involved parties. In this new “Sentinel” series, how does Imperial Guard Dor Bo cope in this environment of intrigues and strifes?

2nd Prince, Fuk Quen
Characteristics: Perceptive; shrewd; ruthless

When young was well loved by Shunji, and was once promised (Shunji) as heir apparent but Empress Dowager Hau Chong had 3rd prince Hong Hei crowned as emperor instead, she constantly suppresses him over the years.  Because of an imperial guard entrance examination mishap, Fuk Quen becomes friends with Dor Bo, who also impresses Emperor Hong Hei.  Fuk Quen aided Dor Bo in his quest to be an imperial guard in hopes of using him later.

Because of her grieve for her former mistress the ex-chamber maid of Hong Hei’s previous Empress conspired with anti-Qing rebels, subsequently concealing the explosives to assassinate Hong Hei.  Hoping for Hong He's death at another person's hand, Fuk Quen deliberately turns a blind eye at her subterfuge.  When the assassination fails, Dor Bo because of his successful protection of the Emperor is summarily promoted as the leader of the imperial guards.  However, Fuk Quen’s ambition becomes even more voracious, and he deliberately sets out to create problems between Dor Bo and Hau Chong, as he uses Dor Bo as his lackey.

Fuk Quen finally recovers Sunji’s will, turns out that Sunji told Fuk Quen to drop the matter of succession. However, Fuk Quen only feels that everybody owes him justice so he makes up a fake will, and conspires with the 9-Gate prefect, Sheung Ning, to force Hong Hei to abdicate in favor of him.

 Elaine Yiu
 Man Yun – the tragic Empress
Character: gentle and pleasant, empathetic

Background:
Man Yun’s father is of a three banner (Manchurian) royal kin. She and Fuk Quen were childhood sweetheart, and was in love with Fuk Quen.  Unexpectedly, Hau Chong takes a liking to her and arranges to have her as Hong Hei’s concubine, and is rigorously developed.  However, when Man Yun first entered the palace she was ignored by Hong Hei, fortunately there was her cousin who is Fuk Quen’s wife, Kwai Lun (Natalie Tong) to accompany her.


After Concubine Wai loses her favoritism, Emperor Hong Hei feeling guilty for neglecting Man Yun in the past decrees her as empress. Meanwhile, Fuk Quen still harbors feelings for Man Yun.  To humiliate Hong Hei, Fuk Quen violated Man Yun.  Man Yun dare not confess to anybody so suffers in silence, to finally take her life by jumping into a well.
