Radio Program 雷霆音樂圈 July 3-4 2013; July 13

I couldn't and still can't find audio downloads of Maggie's  (楊美琪 Maggie Yeong) CRHK  "雷霆音樂圈"  radio program online except for the below 2 short audio clips uploaded on her own site.  link

July 3rd 2013 17:34  馬浚偉初試 a-capella  (Steven Ma first time sang a capella)

(Steven's new cd challenged his vocal range)

I don't know how to dl the audio clips on her site.

July 13 2013 22:01 : Steven cherishes every opportunity to create songs and to sing. 馬浚偉:珍惜每一個可以創作和唱歌的機會
July 13 2013 22:14 : Topic: how can there's bird chirping in one song. 馬浚偉:點解首歌會有雀仔聲

Appreciate if someone can share the files of the 4 audio clips for download.
Apparently, (see comment in this link) in his interview with Maggie (not sure if it is in the July 13 or not, definitely not in July 3 or 4th interview) Steven mentioned that the song "不遇见" was inspired by a past love.

RTHK channel 1 - 舊日的足跡 (Old Footprints)

Program presenter:車淑梅
Guest: Steven Ma

Steven going down the memory lane with the radio host.

1) early singing career -- being jeered, vilified and hated because of slogan. (Tn: The ill-feeling towards Steven still lingers to these days. Even more unfair and crazy is that some netizens on Hk forum + hkgolden forum still hate him because Charmain's character ended up with his character in Return of the Cuckoo instead of with Julian Cheung -- so incredible, isn't it?) ref: Steven's memoir

2) first major series - Hong Hei of Domd1998 - author Jin Yong commended he was the best Hong Hei. Steven forever grateful to Catherine Tsang and Li Tim Shing for pushing him to take up this role, and their belief in him that he could do it.

3) For the first time Steven revealed the deep seated secret festering in his heart that he had hastened his mother's death when his mother gave in to his plea to have the fatal surgery that took her life in the end. Although she finally agreed to the surgery she wasn't at first and communicated her anger in written words to Steven. The memory of that scene still made Steven choke up with emotion when he  spoke of it.  (7:55 ) Mom wrote:  "I don't want to do it. Are you pushing me to my death? Do you want me to die? I don't want to do it!"  Her words cut right into Steven's heart, that wound never healed.  At reading his mom's written accusation, Steven instantly collapsed in loud sobs, and his mom's heart melted at seeing her son's heartbreaking collapse, (she had lost her hearing by then so could not hear Steven's sobs) and so in the end she agreed to the surgery. And though the surgery itself was successful, she succumbed to post-surgery pneumonia and died of it a few hours later. Worse, Steven and his sisters weren't there when their mother passed away as they went home to take a much needed rest after a long day at the hospital (doctors had assured them their mother's surgery was successful), only his father was there beside her when she passed away.  (see my comments below)  When narrating his mom's cancer and her death, Steven's voice sounded hoarse and shaky with emotion. He had to break off his narration several times to compose himself. Even the hostess quietly cried with him.  After his mother's death Steven did not cry, and could only cry when he was drunk and so he locked himself inside his bedroom and got roaring drunk to release his tears.  But he did that all behind close door since he had to be strong for his grieving family. After his mother's death, his grandma died a few year later, and a few years later in 2003, his younger sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, but luckily she is now in remission.

4) After 5 years striving starting from ground negative to ground zero in Domd1998, his career finally made it above ground with his role as Dr. Joe in HH1.  (TN: Incidentally it was because of Steven's Dr. Joe that I first noticed him - thought he was sooo cute!)

5) Revealed the secret for the first time publicly why he came back to TVB on a per series contract with TVB. (eta: confirmed in other interviews that he only signed that one contract with TVB for SIAC only, that's it) Besides repaying his gratitude debt to Catherine Tsang and TVB, the main reason is because he had given his word to TVB executives (Tsang and Chan Fai Gong (Uncle 6's secretary then) at the time of his early termination negotiation with them that he would sign a different form of collaboration with TVB.  The management wanted Steven to sign another form of contract collaboration at the time but Steven was too busy then filming in mainland, so he told them he would but not then because he just did not have the time. But he assured them he would come back at a more convenient time to discuss with them about signing a different form of contractual collaboration.

****

eta: Circles 2014-6-14 why leave tvb** clarifies signed siac contract only.

To Steven, his spoken word of promise is just as binding as any legal b&w contract.  In February 2012, I think, TVB (Catherine and another TVB high executive) tried to persuade him to film a tvb series in September but he could not due to schedule conflict but he kept his word by filming PP.

Steven - a man of his words. I gather from this interview and other news reports Steven has only signed this one series contract, that's it.  Just like how I'd previously conjectured on why Steven got off 'easy' for his unprecedented premature termination of his contract - because TVB had exacted from him a promise at the time to sign a different TVB contract.  And Steven gave his word he would but and so he did, cos a man of his words, his promise is as ironclad as a written contract. TVB had looked him up in February but he was still busy filming then.

6) Love life
Love life is doing fine. Vivien is a very independent woman with a quiet personality.  Steven and her understand each other very well but he has promised her not to talk about their love life to the public so a pretty short segment here. But what's interesting is that when the hostess brought up the old news that reportedly Steven had planned his wedding to Vivien without even telling her parents, Steven denied he had ever said that -- that the reporter made that news up.

7) 5-6 years ago Steven was diagnosed with a heart disease that causes abnormal heart palpitations. A surgery is required to permanently fix the problem but the catch is the surgery can only be performed when the heart is acting up. When asked if the disease can be fatal, Steven was nonchalant about it. He said his family doctor said that there is only about 1 out of 10,000 chance that a person can die from hyper heartbeat, so he was not too concerned over his health condition. read link

8) Want to make a movie inspired by his mother's life
Steven has already completed the script inspired by his mother's story.  If all goes according to plans, he would probably have it shot next year as he has already have a sponsor lined up to produce it but he would not be in the cast cos' it would be too painful for him.

My comments:
Besides two hitherto unrevealed secrets now exposed, Steven is basically rehashing what had been published about him on the newspapers from his early career as a singer, his first major series as Hong Hei in Domd1998 and his career changing role as Dr. Joe in HH1, to his mother's cancer and her death, to TVB work and his early termination of contract to love life, to tvb awards to tvb's present situation to lots more.  But I already know most of what he said through print reports, audio and video interviews, so no surprises there for me except for his insight in TVB's present situation. But what caught me off guard is how emotional Steven was talking about his mother's death. How he still carries the irrational guilt over that ill-advised and ill-fated surgery that hastened his mother's death, how the scene of their last exchange (written) constantly replayed itself in his mind - haunting him through the years, and how his mother's  written accusation of him pushing her to her death still cut him to the core. (ngo mg wui zou, ni hai mai yu ong ngo hui sei ya? - I won't do it, you want to push me to my death?)  Time has not erased that guilt, that written accusation; only faded them somewhat, but there it lodges forever in Steven's heart and mind, easily re-ignited - what a burden to carry around.  The psychological trauma of losing his mother so unexpectedly, his remorse and guilt over his advice to his mom to take the surgery forever changed Steven's psych and his life outlook.

I feel that Steven is forever trying to atone for that very moment when his uncontrollable and bitter sobs made his dying mother change her mind to finally agree to the ill-fated surgery. His mother's death is a cross Steven carries to this day on his back, its intangible weight heavy on his conscience, hopefully one day Steven can totally discard that guilt and drop that heavy cross.  Guess his 'selfish' desire of wanting his mother to take the surgery despite her pain and suffering somewhat attributed to Steven's own tolerance and forgiving nature towards other people's frailties and flaws, for who amongst us do not err in our lifetime. To these days, Steven is still making amends to atone for his 'transgression' towards his mother's death. It was not his fault but often it is heart over mind.  Glad that Steven has found spiritual strength and peace with his faith in God.

And good for him, Steven has Vivien to support and love him as he is cos' from what I gather, Steven is quite a moody bf.  Moreover, Vivien has to know this, and most probably does: she can never get the full, complete love from Steven cos' he has already given a part of it to his late mom, so she has to be content with whatever Steven can give of his heart. Like I said: Take Steven as he is - warts and all, and 2nd place in his heart after his late mom.  Before Vivien, there was Tsui Yong Yong, Steven's ex-manager to comfort him.  God bless him, them and us all!

In part2 last segment on TVB, Steven is once again downplaying his talents and accomplishments; modesty/humility is a virtue but if excessive, it can hold back an artist from realizing his potential to achieve a greater height in his career. I always feel that Steven is too humble, too passive and not exertive enough in his career.  I recall this weibo entry from an (ex?) long time fan who said this on weibo: Steven lacks the 霸气 (the aggressiveness) that's why he can only be a celebrity not a superstar. Without that aggressiveness - acting is his career but he cannot make it (career) into a  superstar business.  (sounds like Cao Zhi). Tn: Steven's lack of aggressive spirit, plus his overly humility and his selling short his talents and accomplishments, collectively hinders him from realizing his full potential as an artist, a loss to his fans. But whatever floats his boat - it's his life.  But imo as his fan, what a shame to his god given talents being under-appreciated. Moreover, as an outsider, I don't understand his loyalty to TVB despite their past maltreatments; there is such thing as blind loyalty. (愚忠)Thank goodness, he only signs a one series per year contract.

Another good fan essay on Steven's psych. (Too bad I somehow overlook this original essay when I transferred the other Steven-ma.org fans' essays here before the fansite closed.)

So, those who have listened to the interview, any comments?

Steven says he was quite 'anti-social' in his earlier career years in that he would not socialize outside- that he would return home immediately after work.  His world totally centered around his ailing mother and family. (he had mentioned that in his 2002 memoir) After his mom's death he totally became withdrawn into himself for almost 2 years.

completed 4/26 4/13/2013 Steven promoting album on DBC

2013/04/13 DBC (Digital Broadcasting Corporation) radio program  [大家「真」風騷]
Steven's portion starts at 6:00 @ part 5 into part 6th of the program.

Program archive - only 18 days left to listen link
Fb link - all time happy happy   Go click on the 'like' buttons.

This is a much more enjoyable program to listen to than Wong Hei et al's program so I'm going to paraphrase this post first rather than Wong Hei's.

- hosts: Spencer Leung (梁思浩), 陳彥行、Jacqueline Chong (莊思敏), Ben張啟樂

Main host Spencer opens the show introducing himself and his co-hosts. Ms. Chan says cryptically that actually she and Xiao Ma Ge (Steven) have had a past relationship.

salient points
Talk about why he turned from singer to actor.  He was planning to quit and had even called up his ex-employee to get back his job.  And then Catherine and Tim Gor called him to audition for DOMD1998

- talk about how Catherine Tsang made him audition for Domd1998. There were many people auditioning for the role including Benny Chan. They all took turns auditioning for Emperor Hong Hei and Wai siu bo.

- What? Even tried for Wai Siu Bo,  come one, no way ba.  At the time, Steven felt he wouldn't be able to do it (cos' he was so green then) but now of course no problem.  When he looked at the playback, so cringe-worthy, so no way would he be picked.

 - To his dismay soon after his audition Tsang called him up to tell him that Tim Gor had picked him for the role. He came up with all kinds of excuses to get out of it but Catherine was someone you can get pass once her mind is made up, so with much trepidation he, like a good boy, called in for work. And to make it worse it was his first ancient tv series and just his luck a Qing dynasty at that. So the makeover crew not only shaved his head bald but also shaved off much of his eyebrows. lol! And voila, came up with a completely different eyebrow shape that he thought made him look so weird. And the make up artist worked on his whole face like making his already tall nose to look taller. Apparently, it was quite a difficult transition for Steven to go from a singer to a Qing dynasty actor.  However, Catherine and Tim gor were right, that series was the starting point of his acting career, and onto being tvb first line actor.

**********************************************
Talk on indebtedness and gratitude
Spencer: But what I want to say is that based on my knowing them all these years, you were right to trust them. I've said this many times already, if one day just these three words, Tsang lai Zan, asks me to return to tvb to shoot a series, I will return, free of charge.

female voice: Zan jie, you remember that. Don't pay Spencer.

Spencer: Because she is yan si (benefactor) a human debt owe must be paid. So sentiment can't be priced. So both Catherine and Tim gor have this sentiment to call on me to do things for them.  Just shoot one series only free of charge.

Steven: Right now I'm negotiating the contract with Catherine (spencer interrupts: You can trust her) Well, what I want to say is to tell her is that Spencer won't ask for payment.

Spencer: She knows.

Steven:  Oh, really?

Spencer: I've said many times.

female: should let him shoot a 100 over episode show

Steven: This is truth -- Catherine, Tim gor, and another one -- Uncle Choi to me are my tvb benefactor -- the biggest being Catherine.  also need to thank tvb for developing me.

Spencer: So when you see Catherine, tell her that I'll shoot a series for free -- just one. The most difficult debt to repay is yan ching zai -- individual indebtedness, and if you can repay, then you'll do it.

circles 2013-4-23 Steven from singer to actor back to partial singer

Circles host 梁泰來 chats with  Steven on his journey from singer to actor to partial singer now.
Talks about his early singing career, how he first entered TVB as a contract actor, why he terminated his tvb management contract, and why he agrees to shoot a tvb series in May whether as series contract or just sign contract for just that May series.  And what's his future plan.

商業電台 《起來!大龍鳳!》
過三關 送Air Time嘉賓︰馬浚偉 22.04.20130
12: 30 am -- 1:30 am
hosts: Wong Hei,  Ho Gei Yau (何基佑) Ho Fei Fung (何飛鳳)

Questions on bus lines, Jordan, Cho Cho, noodle flour, GPS, typhoon sirens, one country 2 systems, hair, USB,

Among the 5 new songs Steven wrote: a friendship song (心照), a love song, and a song for his mother. Listening to 心照, I did wonder if Steven wrong a song for Vivian, so happy for her he did.

Intro: This is a CRHK (Commercial Radio HK) program,  "起來!大龍鳳!" hosted by Wong Hei and his co-hosts 杜光庭Daryl Doo and 何飛鳳 .  The segment from 12:30 am to 1:30 am that Steven was a guest is called "Overcome 3 Obstacles, award air-time" (過三關 送 Air Time).  The participants must get over 4 points to be awarded the remaining airtime of the hour, otherwise, they can still attempt to get the airtime by exposing a hitherto unknown to the public an explosive fact of themselves.

Steven picks a host for a question
- He rolls a dice for a question,
- If rolls a 6 he can have one of the other 2 hosts to help him.
- If rolls another 6, he can bypass the question and automatically awarded a point, regardless.
- If he accumulates 5 points and over after overcoming 3 obstacles of 9 questions in all, he gets the remaining hour for his   own use.
- If the total score is below 5 points, his song is banned from airing.
- To get a second chance to have his song aired in the remaining hour, he can expose a hitherto unrevealed fact of himself that the 3 hosts considered as explosive.

Honestly, the game makes the guest seems desperate. Steven didn't do too well in the beginning, honestly I was a bit apprehensive for him, he would totally lose face had he not gotten above 4 pts.

Updated 4-22-2013 circles: 2013-4-22 Music album

How Steven's HiFi quality music come about?
He new songs are all composed recently just for the album, starting end of last year.

Opening intro: After a 10-year absence Steven returns this year to the music world to plug his new song, An Understanding.  A lapse of 10 years, Steven still persists with his love of music, in June he will release a new music album of hi fi quality.  Among the songs Steven composed and wrote five of them, so just how passionate Steven is for music, we all understand.  What make Lok Lok (hostess) curious is why made Steven decide to invest in a hi fi quality (fa siu dip)?  Let's invite Steven who put in his all into this album after a 10-year absence.

S: At first did not think to make a hi fi album, just a normal album of new songs.  But my album supervisor, Acky (?), he himself is into hi fi album, moreover, his recording studio is also adequately equipped to make one, and he himself also designs superior music.  He has experience and credential to enable me to produce an album of this superior (hi fi) standard. When the idea was proposed to the investors, they were willing to budget for it.  So that how the totally new hi fi album came about.

H: Understand that 5 of the songs in the album are composed by you.

S: Yes, quite tough.

H: So, are some of them already composed prior to this or are they all newly composed just for this album?

S: They are all newly composed for this album.  The preparation started end of last year.

H: Wow! That's quick

S: Can be considered quick.  The album supervisor puts in most of his time producing this album, and me too. Everyday, we start at 6 pm to begin the recording.  In actuality, can't start the recording at 6 pm right away.  He has to (bo?) mike, choose the mike, and pick the mike for what I use.  It is not until around 8 pm that we can go into the studio to do the recording.  The pre-recording run-thru is like attending a class.

H: Because of high standard?

S: That, and also because I knew nothing about hi fi recording, so he had to explain details to me, not unlike attending a class.  So the actual recording usually starts around 9 pm and lasted into the night around 3-4 am everyday.  This way we can fully utilize our time.

H: After the album is out, can also publish a book on how to produce a hi-fi superior quality music album.

S: That is up to the supervisor.  For me, I can only take care of composing and writing the songs, and my own singing.  I'm grateful that the supervisor is satisfied with my vocal.  That the mike used can fully display my full vocal.  He said that all my singing broke two of his mikes.  If the song is more emotional I might have to sing a bit more aggressively, so he had to adjust the mike to accommodate the loudness.  And have to use different for different style of singing.  The process was very enjoyable.

H: The plugged song is 心照 (An Understanding) , and it is also composed and written by you? And you have a pseudonym as Yi Ngau. (2 Buffaloes). Why?

S. My friends also asked me the same question - Who is this 2 Buffaloes? I said you know him well. Who? Me?  Actually I first took on this name when I shot A Journey Called Life - just to be more low-key because it had been a long time since I wrote lyrics.

H: Any meaning to it?

S: There is meaning to it. In mainland 'two' ( 二; er) means slightly 'dim' as in dimwitted, not as a derogative but more of an offhanded remark , and ngau (牛, niu) means 'great', 'terrific', 'amazing' etc.  Together 2 buffaloes -- amazing idiot.

H: Thank you, Steven Ma.  Best wishes.

SM's first day (monologue) on CRHK-Commercial Radio Hong Kong

Topic: Use the heart to get to know a person.

Steven's monologue on CRHK Yat Huin Huin (Circles). Very brief -  topic Don't judge a book by its cover. For instance like he was judged on his appearance when he first entered the entertainment circle. How people presumed from his refined look and cultured (si-man) conduct that he was an overseas student, and that he was from a wealthy family, which of course, was far from the truth.  And another example was this woman he used to work with in a company, how she went about her work with a 'black' face, stern and unsmiling all the time so one day unable to restrain his curiosity he asked her why she never smiled at all. She said what was there to smile about, and people would think her crazy if she smiled over nothing. Steven asked her to smile for him and when she did it was like after the rain out came the rainbow and sunshine.  At that moment in time, he understood that some people are just born with that kind of impassive look so we really shouldn't judge people by our first impression.  We should get to know and not listen to hearsay or gossip to judge them. This way the society will be more harmonious.

Who ever sang the cover of Cyndi Lauper's True Colors did a horrible job.  Don't know why Steven played that cover.

Updated video link: Zhejiang Radio Station Live - 2 hours

@FM93浙江交通之声蓝婧
Dec 12/18 - midnight - 2 am
 the radio station's address

UPDATED: Edited copy tudou link ; steven ma.org weibo link;
longer duration edition: baidu
39:32 mins long on tudou

The theme is Why do you like Hong Kong artist, Steven Ma?
《你为什么会喜欢马浚伟?》

The newscaster in FM93 Zhejiang, 蓝婧, a staunch Steven Ma fan, was in the 1st fan hengdian visit), is right now (started at midnight) as guest DJ in the same radio, broadcasting a segment on Steven Ma and why you like him .  Having being informed of this segment on himself, Steven said he is listening to her broadcast too.

TN commentary: 蓝婧 is not only pretty but has a very sweet voice to boot. (from her avatar) haha! 蓝婧 is ultra nervous, her words were a bit rushed but full of enthusiasm that is very catching.  She knows that Steven is listening because he weibo he is, so she is extra nervous.  What is the chance of hosting a segment on someone you admire as a role model? (She says she has no idols just role models) And moreover being a DJ is very different from being a newscaster, who reads from a scripted news report.  A DJ work is more dynamic and spontaneous.  As a first time DJ she did a pretty good job for her 2 hours hosting.  She weibo that that wasn't her best effort because of lack of experience but the opportunity to host a show on Steven was something she will cherish for a long time. Listening to the edited version can tell that Lan Jing was very excited because she knew Steven was listening to her broadcast.  She was so grateful for this opportunity to broadcast a show on her role model artist.

There is one such healthy person, all you gor gor jie jie will listen to him.  Ma Zai's image has always been healthy, and his tv series ratings are good too, and also he like sports. Why not let Ma Zai tell you how to be even more happy.

Steven:
Hello, I'm Ma Chun Wai.  One way a $100 will make me happy is to use half of its $50 to rent a badminton court. Should be able get an hour with it.  But within that one hour, happiness does not just belong to me, need to find a partner and opponents.  Together with me will at least have 4 people happy together.  Of course, if want to have more, 8 people is fine too.  Can only play 21 minutes for each game.  Per our standard and speed one hour can play many games.  So, many people can be happy together.  Instead of just myself be happy why not share the happiness with other people. So it is quite a deal to use the $50 to rent a badminton court.  And the remanding $50 can be used to buy lots of water and a big bar of chocolate because hitting balls can take a toll on the body, so everyone will eat some.  This one hour is both healthy and happy. Win or lose is secondary, I believe this $100 is well spent.

Customarily, to make myself happy, I will look at stuff that I like, like audio equipment or cameras, not necessarily to buy.  Or go ride a bike, do some exercise, of course, playing badminton makes me the most happy.  I will certainly go do something that I enjoy.  If my mood is low, I will do what I just said.  Just looking at it will make me feel happier.

Besides playing badminton what other stuff that is tiring but still makes you happy?
Shooting a series is of course tiring but when you feel the excitement of a scene and the lines are good, and your performance is just how you envisioned it to be, or maybe everybody thinks it is good, that kind of happiness will make up for the hardship of filming. Of course, when the viewers tell you that they like it, it adds on the happiness.

Honestly, cooking is tiring.  If I cook at home, after cooking I won't feel like eating because I am sweaty all over, no appetite to eat. The smell of grease and smoke make my whole body stink.  But seeing friends eating so happily, and they heap praises on you, and take photos nonstop, so beautiful ah, and then share them on facebook, weibo, and seeing them not wasting any leftovers, that kind of happiness is well worth the effort.

My definition for happiness is "if I'm not unhappy then I'm happy."  I am naturally high. I can be easily pleased if nothing particular happens.  Nothing unhappy happens to me,  I am already happy for that.  Recently I was very happy to go on a long biking trip.  It was a whole day trip, from morning until dusk, and then dinner. That day I don't know why but I felt very happy. Along the way, looking at passing scenery, under the sun, even though becaming sunburn. From Dai Yuan to Dai Po -  a round trip biking,  That day I was very relaxed and happy, and moreover no need to spend money because I have my own bicycle.  To rent a bicycle is not expensive anyway. It's easy to make oneself happy.
