New Series used as Cannon Fodders; Stephen Chan Thwarted; Steven Ma Bombarded TVB

新劇擺炮灰檔 陳總冇符 馬浚偉炮轟無綫
Sources: suddenly 1st weekly issue 803;  steven-ma.org

Steven Ma’s latest series, Links to Temptation, that premiered Monday, December 13th, garnered an average rating of 30 points; result not too bad at all. But recently, Steven’s mood was only so-so, as he lamented in his weibo of being: “the more he yields the more he is being bullied”, his barbs obviously directed at TVB.

The crux of the matter is that all his series are being aired in the cannon fodder timeslots (tn: timeslot link) beginning with A Watchdog’s Tale aired January early this year followed by Ghost Writer pitting against World Cup. And now Links to Temptation is aired right after anniversary, undoubtedly not destined for awards given its long lapse from the next anniversary. What’s worse, his other new series, 7 Days in Life will air immediately following ‘Links’ right before the Chinese New Year festival starts. So provoked, no wonder he bombarded TVB on his weibo.  Allegedly, Mr. Stephen Chan tried hard to divert the course of tide but regrettably without success. During his interview with Weekly, Steven sighed and said: “Feel very helpless!”

Recently, Steven's weibo lament about “the more he yields, the more he’s being bullied; the more he endures, the more unreasonable his paybacks were!” evinces his fury over the fact that starting this year all the way to the next, his four series have been or will be aired in cannon fodder timeslots. Steven’s fans all left messages to support their idol, lambasting TVB of wanting Steven to choke on a gigiantic pig’s skull.

Adam Cheng teases Steven Ma for taking away his rice bowl

Recently, Steven Ma is filming  ancient period drama, Thunder in the Forbidden City, and as such encounter Adam Cheng daily in the make-up room.  Adam's ancient drama handsome and heroic looks are legendary in the entertainment circle.  But one day in the make-up room when Adam happened to meet Steven, he complained petulantly:  "You this Mazai, ever since you joined tvb to film series, I didn't get to shoot tvb's ancient period drama anymore! "

Getting his leg unexpectedly pulled by Adam, Steven, whose ancient period drama looks is also highly acclaimed, was momentarily stunned and speechless.  He said:  "Adam's elegant, insouciant manner can't be beat. I can't compare. In fact, my mannerisms in the ancient period dramas I learned from watching him.  And that he hope one day he can collaborate with Adam."

Steven Ma Sighs saying to get an award will have to wait for a miracle to happen.

馬浚偉嘆攞視帝要等奇蹟出現@on.cc
credit: steven-ma.org

Steven was attending the blessing ceremony for his latest series, The Alarming Thunder in the Forbidden City, at TVB city. His two new series, ‘Links to Temptation’ and ‘7 Days of Isolation’ will both be aired early next year, which, of course, will be at a great disadvantage as far as the year end anniversary awards is concerned.  But he is confident, and cited ‘Ghost Writer’ as an example, which garnered high ratings despite being pitted against World Cup.  He jests: “All these years I’ve been fighting a battle, but getting an award will have to wait for a miracle to happen!”  He hopes his nomination will get him into the top 5, but what he hopes most is for Evergreen to get the best supporting actor award; he quips: “Fei Fan Gor eating crap (shit) this time will be well worth it.”

******************************
I usually wait to translate news reports because the more detailed articles usually take longer to come out before those quickie snippets of news. I translated the previous 'miracle' snippet because I thought Steven's quip on “Fei Fan Gor eating crap (sh*t) this time is well worth it.” was quite funny. Here's another cut and paste version on Steven's comment. So what did Steven really say? Will have to watch the video.

salient info @ takungpao;oriental daily
Last night Steven Ma attended Thunder’s blessing ceremony. He expressed that two of his news series will be airing soon. Given that fact, it stands to reason that most likely he will lose out again at next year anniversary awards. When asked if he feels disappointed that his new series never gets to air just before anniversary? Steven smiles and says: “A little. A Watchdog’s Tale is among the top 5 rated series this year. Not low at all. But because it was aired so early in the year, there wasn't much hype on it. And also like Ghost Writer, it has good ratings even though it was pitted against Ghost Writer. All these years in the industry, don't understand why my series are often aired during these timeslots to fight battles. If I hope to get an award then will have to wait for a miracle to happen. To be able to get into top 5, I’m already very happy. My only wish is that Mak Bao can get an award.”

Steven Ma and Kenneth Ma Learned Peking Opera, and Received Praises for it.

《紫禁惊雷》热拍 马浚伟马国明学京剧获称赞

Steven Ma and Kenneth Ma shot a Peking Opera scene for The Alarming Thunder of the Forbidden City. These two Hong Kong artistes who had no prior knowledge of Peking Opera whatsoever were like two frenzied Peking ducks for half an hour attempting to memorize by rote a portion of aria demonstrated by their Peking Opera teacher.

Steven practices his Cantonese opera singing regularly, so although there was pressure he was not overly flustered. But to poor Kenneth, Peking Opera was all Greek to him. Seeing his furrowed brow as he sang, it brought home that this bowl of instant noodles was truly not easy to ingest. But, regardless, the assignment must be accomplished; so under the expectant and watchful eyes of the whole  videocamera crew, the two Mas belted out the song: one sang as Guan Gong*, the other, Zhao Zi Long*. These two brothers put into practice the idiom of “live together, die together”. (TN: float or sink together in the same boat) When the director yelled “roll”, they immediately opened up their mouths and began to sing no stop. Who could have thought that their singing was delivered with both clear diction and precise intonation? One take and their scene passed muster. The Peking Opera teacher and the whole camera crew broke into instant applause to show their approval. Thus a pair of “smart horses” (Ma) successfully passed the hurdle; they were so elated they whooped  with exuberance!

The Peking Opera teacher praised the two Mas: “Peking Opera is a national treasure, and you both got the hang of it just like that. Very smart ya! You two are also a pair of national treasures!”

Steven enjoys Cantonese Opera, but after this stint with Peking Opera, Steven feels that it is not only pleasant to his ears but that it is also suitable for him to perform on stage; hence, it kindled an interest in him to learn Peking Opera himself. He says: “I intend to learn Peking Opera from the Peking Opera teacher. When I'm proficient, it will be another artistic skill. When performing on stage, it will provide an alternative choice.”

*Guan Yu & Zhao Zi Long ( Three Kingdoms characters)

*Guan Yu (military general under Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han Dynasty and Three Kingdoms period)

Note: No wonder Steven loves being in Qing Dynasty, it's like he were from that era. In fact, Steven has said that the late Qing is among his most favorite Chinese history era.

new 2010-11-27 Virginia Lok will transfer from TVB; Stephen Chan Will Reign Supreme

Although Stephen Chan has been charged with bribery by the ICAC, but due to the embattled TVB’s woes that include its impasse with the Big Four over royalties, the impact of laissez-faire television licensing next year, and its diminishing series sales in overseas market, 6th Aunt (Mona Fong), in the interest of the company,  has decided to take the risk of reinstating the lawsuit entangled Stephen Chan to his post for salvation. Stephen Chan not only returned with much grandeur but supposedly with his power increased, too.  Early next year, his nemesis, Director of Human and Production Resources, Virginia Lok, will be transferred to Shaw as the person in charge of film production development. And as such, Mr. Chan will henceforth reign supreme; no wonder he was in such high spirit on the night of the anniversary gala.

Some legal professionals considered 6th Aunt’s decision to let Stephen resume work to be risky.   Attorney Leung and Attorney Qin believed that TVB’s image will be further damaged if Mr. Chan is later convicted of his charges.  The reason behind 6th Aunt's risky move, besides needing Stephen for deliverance, is because of TVB’s imminent political change of weather!

Fala Chen Confides her Concerns to Steven Ma

陳法拉向馬仔訴心事
2010/11/20
The tv series, Links to Temptation, which is produced by Producer Tsui Yu On, and starring Steven Ma, Fala Chen and Yoyo Mung will air immediately following “Gun Metal Grey” at 9:30 pm on December 13.  Steven, who has been preoccupied with filming “Thunder in the Forbidden City”, did a late-night shooting for  “Links’ promo video the other night.

Steven says: “Once “Thunder” started filming, the schedules are really tight. The breaks in between are not enough.  Also, every scene is a fight scene; arms, legs and waist are all hurting. Now I truly understand how it feels to be covered all over with cuts and bruises.  But hearing that a series will be out soon, I feel very happy.  So no matter how exhausting it gets, I can bear it.”  When pointed out that the new series will follow “GMG” in a golden timeslot, Steven expresses that he is not overly concern about the airing timeslot. “Experience shows me that so long it is a good series, it will receive support from the audience, regardless when it’s aired.”

Real Ability
Fala Chen, who is also filming the same promo video, candidly reveals that this was her first female lead role since entering the television industry, and for that she feels very excited.  “I love to partner with Ah Gor (Elder Brother / i.e. Steven). I got to know him after entering the industry. He loves me dearly.  I confide in him my concerns, whereby he helps me see things from a different perspective.   What’s more, he can keep a secret.  Steven is a close friend whom I respect very much and trust.”  She hopes “Links” will garner good ratings.  And also wish Steven well in his bid to win the tv king award in this year anniversary award ceremony. “I’ve high hopes for Ah Gor.  He has real ability. The best thing is that we both win an award through Ghost Writer.”  Fala adds that if Steven wins the award, they will have a celebratory dinner.  ‘Just so Ah Gor will be happy, and just so there will be a dinner, I wish Ma Zai all the best in winning the award.”

Contented with One's Lot

Title: 自得其乐
source: Singapore I-Weekly, issue 648 @ steven-ma,org

In the entertainment circle where people come and go, one foot in and there he stayed for 17 years. Everybody wants to be famous; he says it is only a job, and has pragmatically separated job from daily life. Much like an outsider looking into the circle of hullabaloo.

I like to take things seriously during the process, but it’s not for the sake of winning. I wouldn’t get angry just because I lost but neither would I be jubilant just because I won.
As soon as he arrives at the venue, he chats as he takes a seat. He jests that the hotel’s pillows are too soft, even with two stacked together, still not enough, but three is too much. No posturing from him but no excessive show of friendliness either. The handshake was strong and firm. Add two points for first impression.

He grew up in Hong Kong public housing; father was a bus driver, all very grassroot. Joined the singing competitions, lost 43 times, finally succeeded on his 44th attempt. With much difficulty he finally entered the industry, but because the company came up with the slogan “He is not Lai Ming, he is not Hok Yao”; even before he could strut his stuff he already inadvertently provoked public indignation. Never mind, go into acting then.

From bystander to male lead, good friend Wayne Lai has made a big breakthrough with Chai Gao, thus greatly elevating his status. As a regular male lead he is still without a representative piece. Other people are anxious for him but he continues to do things per the yardstick in him, asserting his way is appropriate. As for people and stuff, having been through his mother’s death, he now sees things in perspective. As to the wins and losses, he is calm, almost indifferent.

“What to say, that’s my personality. Those who don’t know me well will think I’m overly calm. Having been through so much, whether win or lose, applause or jeers, life or death, being cool-headed has become my way of coping with things. I have not impacted other people so don’t have to answer to anyone; also, don’t have to worry what other people say. Right? Haha! Even if disappointed it won’t be now. Haha! If didn’t reap what I sow, there’s nothing I could do about it. If I never put in the effort and energy, then I have no expectation.

“Variety shows are scared to have me on their programs because I’m very earnest even in play. Whether it was eating wasabi or playing table tennis, I’ll take it seriously. When playing badminton with friends, someone would say: Wei, don’t have to be so earnest, it’s just a game. But the thing is, I enjoy being earnest during the process. Not for winning. I wouldn’t get angry just because I lost but neither would I be jubilant if I won. This is just my attitude. As to whether could win the ultimate prize, if can’t, then it’s just this level (hand demonstration) If won, then this level (hand level raised a little higher) Will be very happy, but will not be too lightheaded. ”

My world does not have a “Give Face Clique”, only a “Be happy Clique.
This kind of “ngang geng’ (stiff neck = stubbornness), how to deal with it inside the entertainment circle?

“Outside work, I seldom socialize with people from the entertainment circle. If happy at seeing each other, then that’s good enough. Everybody has a different individuality. I’ll not change my way of living just because I’m in the entertainment circle.

“Not easy?” I queried.

He laughs: “I don’t understand why it should be difficult lo. It’s all about whether you'll stick to your principles or not. I’ve been this way since young. Once I set my mind on something, nobody can change it. I’m only expressing my own inborn individuality. What’s so difficult about it? I don’t understand wo.”

Still, will be influenced by other people ba?

“Why be influenced by other people? Hong Kong has many young people taking drugs. If people take drugs, then you have to take drugs, too? If don’t even have the most basic values and morality, shouldn’t you do some self-reflection? We can’t shift responsibility onto others. Can’t blame your being bad on this circle. Anyway I don’t think this circle is all that bad wo, it is very normal.”

His tone remains relaxed; his smile still lingers on his lips.

He segues and says to-date since entering the industry, he never needs to engage in social entertainments. Disco is too noisy; he is not comfortable in it. No matter who invites, he still will not go. Why give who and who face.

“Why are there such “Don’t give face” comments? Pray tell, who would I offend? Haha! People should show mutual respect. If I were still a newbie maybe then I need to attend to make more friends. But these 8 or 10 years or so, I’ve never forced myself go to places I didn’t wish to go. For instance, many movie premieres will invite artistes to attend. Frankly, if friends invite me, I’ll go. But if unacquainted artistes or directors invite me, I won’t go. What for? I don’t even know them. If I want to watch that movie, I’ll find time to watch it myself.”

True, nothing wrong with saying this. But what if one does not practice what one preaches.

“Sorry, but within this past 10 years, I truly didn’t attend even once wo. Usually I’ll go by myself to watch it. Everybody has his/her own stance and principles. My world doesn’t have a “Give Face Clique”, only a “Be happy Clique”. Sorry, I’m very direct. But that’s just who I am. Today I can lie to you, but after I leave for Hong Kong, you can check to see if I’ve attended any. Not even once. Not because I didn’t give face but that I didn’t know them. Haha!”

A ‘no comments’ remark does not represent any standpoint! What's more, it does not mean fear of involvement!
Recently in the wake of Stephen Chan explosive scandal, it was rumored he was involved with the corruption charged Stephen Chan and Edthancy in a complex triangle relationship. Fresh rumors rolled out daily from the rumor mills; he who claimed too lazy to be bothered with news reports finally broke his stance to leave words on his blog 2010-03-17 ...

Very unhappy!
The fact is after being in this industry for so many years, I’ve become indifferent to sex scandals; how many are real and how many are actually fabricated. As to the weekly magazine’s negative coverage, I was actually not angry; I only smiled, unperturbed!

But today some of the news reports on my response and stance have obviously misconstrued my meaning. But still, they really upset me. The way things are going these days, we really should not make any responses so as to avoid causing injustice to any person. This is a matter of course! The refusal to answer does not represent any standpoint; what's more, it does not mean a fear of involvement! ...Ai! I am not this kind of person, ok?..... I have already clarified my future plan; perhaps some press friends were not aware of it, thus the speculations. But, what wrong did I do?

Even though he insisted that he was not angry but still he used a lot of exclamation marks, enough to illustrate his agitation. Recall during the interview when Stephen Chen was brought up, Steven’s words conveyed his gratitude towards the former. He said that he (Stephen) was instrumental in finalizing his contract, thus enabling him to engage in things that interest him such as: writing a book, singing, and hosting a cooking show.

Wrapping up the interview, I remember in the pre-interview of him saying making time to watch badminton matches, and also studying the dictionary as preparation for a Hong Kong tv show. So I casually asks if he truly carries a dictionary with him all the time, and if so may I take a look at it?

He immediately takes out his electronic dictionary and proffers it to me with a smile; it looks well-used. At that moment, I felt awkward. In contrast to my small-mindedness, he, with his smiling face, remains unperturbed

Note1: (Steven did indeed ignore the triangle relationship rumor; it wasn’t until the reporters accused him of deliberately distancing himself from Stephen Chen that he took to writing his feelings in his blog.)

Note2: “Once I set my mind on something, nobody can change it.”
Just like Nip Ji Yuen, Steven’s stubbornness is a double sided sword.

TVB ex scriptwriter's interview

Surviving TVB - an old timer tvb scripwriter-director's (Lau Sung On) retrospection over the changes at TVB through his 20 odd years of employment. Quote: The passion of yesteryear in tvb has been long buried if not dissipated by the commercialization and work ethics of today.

loose translation piece meal
Scriptwriter-director Lau Sung On said: Nowadays, many thespians and crew members' have this work attitude similar to be a monk for a day. The company no longer takes care of its people like how it used to, in return, they (employees) have lost their passion to give it their all for the company. Feeling tired, they would arrive late at work. Also, there are artistes who would read their script on the fly before the shooting of their scenes. Or some behind-the-scenes crew members are not prepared, inevitably creating numerous doing-things-on-the-fly (or winged it) employees. (e.g. revising script on the go) Since some thespians did not have a full grasp of the script, they improvised and winged it, giving a so-so performance. Don't wish to invest too much emotions into it (the company); thus won't get hurt because don't know what's going to happen next. Anyway, many TVB viewers will only watch the 1st three episodes and the last 3 episodes, and skip the middle. Because the story in between drags, and the artistes' acting; vague; did not use script so winged it.

Analysis of TVB’s ‘Parties’ and ‘Cliques’: Real-life "Beyond the Realm of Conscience"?

Posted 19 March 2010 - 01:07 AM @
从陈志云被捕看TVB高层派系《宫心计》

Translation: llwy12@ asianfanatics.net (part 1)

The recent scandal over TVB GM Stephen Chan’s arrest for alleged corruption has so far played out like one of the station’s own dramas. Though Stephen Chan and 4 others have now been released on bail awaiting further investigation, there does not seem to be an end in sight to the ongoing saga, with one person after another ‘spilling the beans’ on the inner workings and disarray at TVB. Of course, the ‘biggest’ news so far has been the rumors that Stephen Chan was ‘turned in’ to the ICAC by none other than his employer TVB due to his ‘falling out of favor’ with top management. As for TVB being overrun by ‘parties’ and ‘cliques’, this is a well-known ‘secret’ by almost everyone in the industry. Virginia Lok, Catherine Tsang, Tommy Leung, and Stephen Chan are the ‘head’ of the executive team and have the power to control and promote artists. If Stephen Chan loses all power due to the scandal, then the competition of the ‘4 parties’ will be greatly affected, resulting in only 3 parties remaining (Virginia Lok, Catherine Tsang, Tommy Leung). Out of the 3, it has been rumored that Mona Fong’s ‘favorite’ Virginia Lok would likely prevail and the group of young artists under her would become the ‘face’ of TVB in the future.

With the commotion surrounding Stephen Chan’s case now, the developments and the way things are playing out in the media rival that of the inner palace conflicts and struggles in TVB’s highly-rated hit from last year <> -- except that the real-life events are even more dramatic and interesting.

Part 1: The 4 Parties
The Chan Party – Leader: Stephen Chan

Stephen Chan: TVB’s General Manager, used to be a DJ. Prior to being arrested, he did the ‘voiceovers’ for various TVB variety and specialty shows and simultaneously hosted the interview show <>. Since becoming GM, Stephen’s presence has been quite strong and his flamboyance has attracted many to him. It is rumored that Stephen ‘loves’ promoting the artists that others [managers] don’t want – the greatest example is Fala Chan, whom he single-handedly pushed to the “Best Supporting Actress” position. TV Queen Sheren Tang, who is known for constantly going against Virginia Lok, is also highly favored by Stephen. In addition, Patrick Tang, Amigo Chui, etc. – also his favorites – were able to win many awards at the 2007 TVB Anniversary Awards ceremony, though there was a lot of backlash afterwards.

Favorite Male Artists – Amigo Chui, Sammul Chan, Patrick Tang, Wong Hei, etc.
Favorite Female Artists – Sheren Tang, Fala Chan, Tavia Yeung, etc.

The Lok Party – Leader: Virginia Lok
Virginia Lok: TVB’s Production and Resources Manager, with primary jurisdiction over all matters related to TVB’s artists; also one of the “official” representatives and spokesperson for the artists. The “Lok” Party consists primarily of the newer generation ‘siu sangs’ and ‘fa-dans’. With her position, it can be said that the fate of ALL TVB artists is in her hands. Virginia Lok has made quite a few new artists popular through promotion – Kevin Cheng is the biggest example of this. Back in the days, Kevin Cheng had been in the industry for a long time, but was never able to become popular until he officially became Virginia Lok’s “god-son” – after that, he started getting lead roles in series after series (most of them grand productions), which paved the way for his ‘TV King’ award in 2006.

Favorite Male Artists – Kevin Cheng, Moses Chan, Raymond Lam, Ron Ng, Bosco Wong, etc.
Favorite Female Artists – Charmaine Sheh, Myolie Wu, Linda Chung, Kate Tsui, etc.

The Tsang Party – Leader: Catherine Tsang
Catherine Tsang: TVB’s Production Department Head (Series); was once a broadcaster at RTHK; affectionately nicknamed “Jen Jie” by the artists. Catherine started with TVB in 1974 and has been credited with launching the careers of HK’s biggest stars such as Chow Yun Fat, Andy Lau, Tony Leung, etc. She has gone through both the ‘Run Run Shaw era’ as well as the ‘Mona Fong era’ and has remained strongly standing to this day. The Tsang Party consists almost entirely of the most skilled and talented artists (in terms of acting) in TVB, however because Catherine’s focus has always been on directing behind the scenes, coupled with much of the power being in Virginia Lok’s hands, so her artists are never heavily promoted.

Favorite Male Artists: Bobby AuYeung, Steven Ma, Wayne Lai, etc.
Favorite Female Artists: Ada Choi, Maggie Cheung, Shirley Yeung, etc.

The Leung Party – Leader: Tommy Leung
Tommy Leung: TVB Producer; Head of Series Production. Started with TVB in 1973 and is considered an ‘elder’-type figure [started with the company from the beginning]. His specialty includes grand commercial productions. 2001 was the “Year of Leung’s Party”, as the ‘siu sangs’ and ‘fa dans’ under him at that time – Louis Koo, Gallen Lo, Jessica Hsuan, Flora Chan, etc. – were all “high ratings guarantees”. After strong competition with Tsang’s Party for many years, Leung’s Party had already lost some of it’s steam – then, when Virginia Lok came to power in 2003, his Party had to battle with hers as well. Currently, almost all of Leung’s artists have left TVB.

Favorite Male Artists: Gallen Lo, Roger Kwok, Louis Koo, etc.
Favorite Female Artists: Sonjia Kwok, Jessica Hsuan, Flora Chan, etc.

It’s Nice to be #1 (Book of Words)

第一真好
Feb. 16, 2010
writer: Eunice Lam

In the TVB Chinese Language quiz show, Book of Words, (正识第一) Steven Ma and I as partners won the championship. My Chinese is not #1, (playing on the word ‘#1’ in (正识第一 ) it was only #1 during that month of competition. However, among the artistes, Ma Zai’s Chinese should be considered #1 indeed. I did not expect his Chinese to be this good.

Actually, we are not that well-acquainted; we only met last year in an awards function, and we chatted. He gave me some books. Turn out he has already published five so far. (Ms. Lam also wrote an article on Steven)

When Book of Words was launched, he invited me to be his military counselor. For some questions we could discuss before answering. For the last level in the final round, he had to answer alone. As his military counselor, he could only ask me one question; if counseled wrongly he would not be able to answer the remaining scoring questions.

I had no idea beforehand that the questions were so profound. It began with an oracle script (an early form of Chinese script written on bones). I know that the Chinese language started off as pictograph to be looked at not to be read. The character looked like 「雨」(rain),and sure enough it turned out to be ‘rain’ indeed. Actually, I have never studied oracle script, so the one good thing about quizzes is that it forces one to think on one’s feet.

Steven and I were very compatible, cooperated well, and had fun together. During the question grabbing round, I said to him: “Your hand is longer than mine; you’re in charge of hitting the bell.” In the last level, Steven performed extraordinarily well. My son came up and said: “How come so profound? I didn’t even know any of the characters.” His Chinese, no matter how much tutoring, remains poor. The 4th (sic 6th, total 8 questions in all) question was a passage from an article deliberately written with erroneous characters that needed fixing. The MC asked Ma Zai if he needed my help. I suggested him to forfeit the question because the chance of being wrong was way too high. Go to the next question. Sure enough in the following question, he could not come up with the two correct characters. After consulting me he went on to successfully sweep through the rest of the remaining questions. I had to commend Ma Zai for his composure and effort.

The duo team of Steven Ma and Eunice Lam Yin Nei went on high attack; with Ms. Lam backing him as the counselor in a culture game show, Book of Words, Steven triumphed over his rivals to become the champion of this show, thus earning the title, “King of Orthography”.

In the final round, Steven Ma- Eunice Lam team went head to head with Evergreen Mak – Elaine Yiu team. The battle spirit was high in MaLam team plus being fully prepared, they ultimately won a grand prize of over HK500,000 (note: exact total - HK$550,000) in cash and goods.

“I’m very happy to win the prize. More so, I’m very grateful to Ms. Lam, who, despite being sick that day, still came to support me in my battle.”

Steven expresses that he has already given away his prizes to friends and relatives. He says: “The cash prize was not much, and the goods were not very suitable for myself.”

To prepare for this final round, Steven studied the Chinese literature for more than a month. He laments that only through learning did he realize just how much he lacks in knowledge. He says: “The more books I read, the more I realized that my knowledge standard is not high. Besides the knowledge gained during school days, my grasp of Chinese classics was all basically acquired from the scripts in my ancient drama series; their dialogues were all very cultured. All these years, unwittingly, I’d actually imbibed quite a bit of Chinese culture.” “Now my dictionary is constantly by my side, if unsure of tough words, will consult my mute teacher.”

eta:
definition of orthography
1 : the art of writing words with the proper letters according to standard usage
2 : the representation of the sounds of a language by written or printed symbols
3 : a part of language study that deals with letters and spelling
Why am I not surprised by Steven’s win?

Paco's interview of SM

Posted 25 January 2010 - 10:25 AM
Watch his most recent paco's interview
credit reposting to Steven-ma.org

Part1: reminiscent of their early years in Steven's career. about his singing. Steven humbly thanked Paco for all the opportunities he had given Steven but that he did not grasp them. Paco disagreed- said the timing was not right. Steven said at the time, he did not know how to be a singer (My interpretation: he did not know how maybe because his principles prevented him from being packaged.)
etc...

part 2: said he was extremely surprised by the his cooking's excellent rating of 19 points since the last rating was 14 points only. He gave full credit to the behind the scenes staff and crew - esp. editing. And emphasized repeatedly that it was definitely a team work. He hopes that if can -- just him wishing that his 2nd cooking program could be filmed in foreign countries he has never been before like France or Italy. That he could cook and film whatever he sees cooking right then and there whether out on the streets or in restaurant.

Talk about upcoming album project which is still in its planning stage. Can release too much info as yet because they are still brainstorming and collecting songs. TVB forbids him from giving out too much info on it. But for sure, Watchdog theme song will the on it. Talk about watchdog dog's rhythm being too quick,

Talk about marriage -- Steven says once he married, his lifestyle as well as priorities in life will change to accommodate his wife and the kids they will have. So he needs to be sure he can provide such security for his family before getting married. Steven is so conservative in money saving that he has and will never invest in stocks.

Talk about cooking a candlelight dinner for his gf. A mixture of Chinese cooking with steak. Conclusion: it's not the food but the company that counts most for an enjoyable meal.

Talk about him making Japanese work just yesterday for his cooking show and making a mess of it because the cooking is different.

Steven Ma Wins Third Prize in Lottery on His Birthday
Steven Ma attended the 10th Central and Western Festival event as an ambassador. Steven's nose allergies were acting up, so he took the risk of singing off-key and sang [during the event]. He said, "I won the third prize in a lottery on my birthday. I thought it was over a million dollars, but there were 110 winners, so I only won $30,000. The lottery ticket was a birthday gift from my assistant, so I will give him half. (How will you be spending it?) Treat friends out to dinner. (There were reports saying that you told Ngo Ka Nin to 'go to hell'.) Ka Nin has already called me and said that he didn't say it [was me]. He felt that it made me upset, and he felt sorry. He only said that a veteran's words have hurt him. I need to explain because I want to prove my innocence. I am a guy, so I will not say 'go to hell'. Also, I just collaborated with Ka Nin last year. We have never collaborated before. The matter is now being handled by my lawyer!"

Hyn5's commentary
"Steven and Ka Nin have already cleared things up through Weibo."

weibo 2010-10-30 18:09
Steven Ma: "I received a call from Ka Nin this afternoon. He apologized to me because a certain article framed him saying that Ka Nin said that I once insulted him, and told him to XX. Ka Nin expressed to me that he never said that that person was me. It was someone he met ten years ago. Ka Nin said that he is very unhappy that someone had made this up, and he hopes that I don't misunderstand! I want to say that I, too, cannot accept this frame-upon-frame behaviour. I will let my lawyer deal with this matter! Ka Nin, take care of your injury. Don't worry!"

Ngo Ka Nin: "Ma Jai, I am really sorry. The reports have affected you. I would like to apologize to you here. Sorry, Ma Jai".

Steven Ma: "Silly boy, you have already clearly explained it this afternoon. They framed you for framing me. I'd be an idiot to believe it! Remember what I told you. You must handle your eye with care. If you see many flashes, you must go to the hospital immediately. It can be very dangerous! Take care of your injury, Spare Rib Boy!"

Ngo Ka Nin: "Understood".

Steven Ma with Fanny Li

Fanny Li: Truly enjoy interviewing Steven because he is very amiable.  Also he is my brother's former schoolmate, also my school senior!  Every time I see him there’s this warm feeling of familiarity. Thank you for that time when we were in the same series, you taught me how to “wan sik” (earn a living), and enabled me to have more scenes.  Also during GW filming production, I personally observed your concern and care towards every temporary actor (extras) .  I will bear that in mind!! I will continue to work hard! Happy belated birthday wish for your rapid ‘rise’.  Smooth sailing everyday.

Steven Ma on Birthday Remembers Mother; Received a Gold Mickey Mouse & a Safe as Auspicious Gifts

 馬浚偉生日念親恩 收金老鼠及「夾萬」好意頭
10/27/2010

 1}I%yO
i)

Yesterday was Seven Ma’s birthday.  He initially thought he would spend his birthday at work, but due to the schedule postponement of his new series’, Imperial Bodyguards, he got an unexpected day off.  Therefore, the night before he called up old friends with October birthdays namely, Lam King Kong (Steven’s elder brother in LOW) and “Ah Ma”, Suet Nie jie (Safeguards) to a crab (大閘蟹 Chinese mitten crab) and hotpot dinner.  Afterwards they went to a restaurant with a beautiful night scene to welcome the stroke of midnight, at which time, they cut the cake together to celebrate.  Both of them kissed Shuet Nei jie on the cheek.   Also in a rare public showing of affection, Shuet Nei jie and husband, 唐佳, kissed each other; all very heart-warming indeed! Just like Steven  said: (in weibo) “Birthday had friends and also beautiful view as company; what more can a man ask for!”

Just entering the 26th day and already Steven ’s cellphone was nonstop receiving well wishes text messages from friends.  Of course, they included good friends both males and females from the entertainment circle such as: Tavia Yeung, Linda Chung, Fala Chen, and Bosco Wong, etc.  Steven  was very happy and did not forget to add: "Who say Sonija and I are on bad terms, see, I received her well wishes text message too!”

Steven expresses (in weibo): Very thankful to all brothers and sisters (including friends and fans)  for their well wishes, very thankful and very moved too! Actually, I have one mindset that has never changed. Birthday to me is a day of remembrance for my mother. That day was her most painful day but at that time besides crying, I knew nothing! Haha! Mother has left me many years now, but this day every year, my mindset remains the same, and also every year my first wish is this: Wishing Mama you will always be happy!
  ‑){,v&[
Steven feels that all mothers on earth are great; no wonder Steven is very respectful to Shuet Nei jie, who has only collaborated once with him as his mother in Safeguards.  Suet Nei jie expresses that though she has acted only once as Steven’s mother, they are very compatible with each other.  She appreciates Steven’s good character and culture; he has the traditional virtues of Chinese people; he honors his teachers and their teachings; he is diligent at work, and acts with his heart. So what does Suet Nei jie think of Steven’s opportunity in competing for the award through Ghost Writer role?  She says: “Actually in both Safeguards and Land of Wealth, Steven was already exceptionally outstanding, but unfortunately lacks a "powerful patronage luck".  I also feel that he lacks a bit of luck, too."

jMB &(r Steven thanks “Ah Ma”, Suet Nei, for her appraisal. He said candidly what actors would not want an award.  His Ghost Writer though pitted against World Cup still garnered good ratings, so he has confidence in himself.  But then getting an award depends on the lining up of heaven, earth and people.  Just like taking an exam, conscientious studying does not guarantee high grades.  Series aired closer to anniversary will of course have an added advantage.  Maybe my acquiring awards luck is not too good, but I feel my luck is not all that bad, either. aMy

cvYz H  I have had many opportunities to perform, and every time both the reviews and ratings are not bad.  If not tv king, then continue to work hard for it.  I still have much to improve on.  Steven laughs and says regardless whether or not he will get his hand on the award, Ghost Writer has already brought him substantial bonuses.  The last month’s extra income is equivalent to a year of filming series.

Because Steven lacks a bit of “acquiring awards luck”, this year birthday he acquired a  'gou yan's' (superior person) well wishes.  His good friend especially gave him a golden Mickey Mouse to ‘wong’ him (to bring prosperity/success, rub off the gold on him).  Also there is a friend who gave him a safe, (gap man) to symbolize good fortune, and hope that he will fill it up with dollar notes and house titles.  Steven says: “This is a very special birthday gift.  I’ve a low crisis awareness, truly have not thought of buying one to store the house title.  Thank you to my friend for such thoughtfulness!”

j5qrM_Chg
Talking about this year’s birthday wishes, Steven says: "Wish that things will go smoothly! The inner being of Nip Dou Bo in Imperial Bodyguards is very complicated.  Very challenging.  I will surprise everybody.  I hope next year I can buy an apartment.  Because the value of my current apartment has risen, so motivated me to buy an apartment."

Suet Nei jie expresses that in the past after working for seven years or so in the film industry she got married and retired henceforth, enjoying life for many years; thirteen years ago she re-entered the industry.  She is very happy filming series for the television station. She is happy with her life journey so far and does not have any special wishes, just good health.

Tsui Yong Yong: Willing to Increase One's Value, Only Then Will Have Options.

Willing to Increase One's Value, Only Then Will Have Options.
(肯增值自己,才会有选择)

2002 summer, the year when my spirit was at its driest point, ever. My spirit was often listless, stuck in a state of languor. My enthusiasm to pursue news had completely faded, and I couldn't care less of the happenings around me.

At the time, I could not pin point the reason for my unhappiness, not until I read Ji Xianlin's (Ji Lao) words: "I am 93 years old already, with one foot in the grave, therefore, I have to work extra harder to finish my heart's desires."

Ah! So, the crux was this, I had come to a standstill; so, I had been living in a 'horrifying' state of complacency; I no longer thought of improving and upgrading myself. How do I shed this state of languor? Verily, what Ji Lao said was indeed a shot of sobering serum. I did not want myself to be constantly counting down the days to my retirement; I didn't want to bury alive my own life with my own hands.

I decided to take a break!

On the day I tendered in my resignation letter, I called up my female friend to go for a walk on the mountains; a time to meditate and readjust my mind and spirit. Suddenly, the phone rang: "Do you still remember my mentioning to you about publishing blueprints? How about venturing into the publishing world together?"

That was what my present boss, Steven Ma, proposed to me then. It was this one phrase, "together create a cultural blueprint" that inspired me to accompany him for eight years to venture into a new environment. Henceforth, no regretting, no retreating. The hardship and adversity experienced in between, I chalked them all up as the learning process. These past eight years, what I feel and what I gain, no outsiders can even begin to understand.

A few years back, I observed how Steven, when rehearsing for his stage show "Chinese Hamlet", was so anxious that he could hardly eat and hardly sleep. During the few months of rehearsals and the few days of performances, I noticed that he had become so thin his cheeks were hollow; at that time, my heart could only ache for him.

Who would have thought that May this year, when accompanying Steven in his shooting of the mv for Ghost Writer, the director requested him to act out, amidst hanging sheets of fabric curtains, the state of confused thoughts, seeking out love, and the futility of pursuing ideals. With just a show of a hand, he captured the timing impeccably; the pose incredibly beautiful; both the videographer's heart and mine were momentarily awed. Turns out, what he gained from the earlier stage rehearsals, he could now apply in another performance. This is obtained through self-improvement. The learning process may be arduous and lonely, but when it has an opportunity to unsheathe itself from its scabbard, the sword revealed will gleam all that more brighter.

This realization reassured me even more than ever that rather than expending energy on people who do not look out for us, it is better to expend our energy into doing something worthwhile, only then will life has more value. Willing to appreciate one's value, only then will have options to choose from." (肯增值自己,才有选择的机会) Quote unquote Steven Ma's maxim. I agree with his saying; this is what is called, "comrades".

TVB Series "A Watchdog's Tale" held a dog food challenge" on the 11th January. Cast that attended include Steven Ma, Maggie Siu, Linda Chung, Kent Cheng, Koni Lui, Natalie Tong and Raymond Wong. Dogs Ah Wong, Bingo and Woody also attended. The cast produced dog recipes and this attracted the dogs, they didn't listen to their owners and this caused a lot of laughter.

Steven appeared with his dog companion Ah Wong in the series, but Ah Wong wasn't at his best behaviour. The series has received very good viewer ratings. Steven said "The series ratings are quite good and the dogs have also contributed a lot of hard work. On the 17th of January the cast will hold a celebration feast in Tai Po eating Poon Choi (Big Bowl Feast). They will also suggest organising a celebration for the dogs, giving them dog bones, toys and food. Or perhaps they will suggest to watch the finale live together.

The reporter asked Natalie Tong whether she has been in contact with ex boyfriend Amigo Chui? She said "You're asking about him again? We haven't been in contact for ages". The reporter referred to recent reports of Amigo being emotionally depressed and needed Lam Kin Ming to help him? She replied" I don't know, she is more professional. I don't know if he is depressed but people need others to comfort them when they have problems". Amigo has not made a public appearance since the incident and outsiders feel he is a coward. Natalie responded by saying "I believe he will make a public appearance one day".

AWT Preempted by Beauty of the Game.

A Watchdog’s Tale tactically gives way. Beauty of the Game’s finale viewing.
Jan 6 2010

“Beauty” starring Sharon Chan, Kate Tsui and Christine Ng is finishing up its run this week. A two-hour show will be aired on Thursday and Friday, respectively. Therefore, A Watchdog’s Tale starring Steven Ma and Linda Chung has to be taken off the air for these two days, consequently, incurring complaints from the viewing public.

Yesterday through a phone interview, TVB Public Relation Assistant Manager, Mr. Tseng, explained: “This is merely a program tactical arrangement move. In fact, there have been many series whose finales were also aired two hours straight so that they could be watched in one go. Such as: Beyond the realm of consciousness, The chip off the old block, and Beauty of the game. Even A Watchdog’s Tale during its finale on Jan 23 will be aired as a two-hour show.” When asked why not arranged for “Beauty” finale to be aired on Saturday? Mr. Tseng said: “This coming Saturday is the annual charity night《慈善星輝仁濟夜》, so could only arrange for Thursday and Friday to air the finale shows.”

馬浚偉剃頭拍劇戴帽禦寒
文章日期:2010年10月20日

Producer Leung Choi Yuen's new TVB series Pu Chung Ling had its custom tryout yesterday.  This is Steven Ma's 6th time shaving his head for his character in a series.

He said: "I don't mind. Moreover, it had been a years since I shaved my head". Steven said his hairdresser brother-in-law was person who shaved his head. Since the weather has turned chilly Steven said he had to sleep with a hat on.  Steven said laughingly: Despite the frequent shaving, I'm not worry my hair won't grow back."  This time his character is a highly skilled martial arts person so he has to practise some kung fu moves.
