A good insight into Steven's personality and personal growth.
Salient points:
Host (Andes Yue 余宜发; Fa Jai) : Sitting beside me is someone I’ve known for a long time but have not seen each other recently. Here’s Steven!
Steven says that they met in childhood. Andes says “Exaggerating much?” Steven says since entry in the industry. And then they go into a long conversation about who is more senior in the industry – none of them wants to claim that seniority ‘honor’. And the consensus is that ‘about the same time.”
Then Andes says that Steven seems to have lost weight.
Steven says: Yes! All muscles. (haha!)
Andes: Take off your shirt. (haha!)
Steven: I’ve no need to compete for this. Because I’m not..
Andes: No need to compete with mine; I don’t have any. (haha!)
Steven: Am not (???) I lost weight because these past years have been playing badminton. So fanatic in badminton playing that I lost roughage and fat. Also continue to workout in the gym. Thinner but more fit. Whereas before, body quite flabby.
Andes: Where got? You have a good frame. blah blah. (typical Men's talk)
--Steven used to own a tanning bed in his flat (not anymore) cos' Andes saw it when he visited him at his home during one CNY where they and other guests played majong and other stuff. The 2 times he especially tanned himself were for his roles in "On the track or off" and "A Watchdog's Tale".
- Coincidentally Steven arbitrarily chose Sept 27 1993 as the date of his entry into the entertainment cos' that's when his first album "Lucky to have met you" was released by Warner Music. His last album "TV series Theme Songs" was released in 2003, and after a elapse of 10 years, this year 2013, he is once again releasing a new album. So almost but not quite yet (as Steven has insisted since it is not yet Sept.) Steven has been in the industry for almost 20 years. Andes asks Steven if he plans to arrange any celebratory event to celebrate his 20th anniversary in the industry. Steven says no. Andes this new album can be considered as a commemoration. Steven says that originally upon a good friend's suggestion, he and his manager planned to only release a song or two but then he got to know this person who sponsored Steven's new album, and he believes that he will continue to release albums.
Andes: It'll be a waste if you don't
Steven: Thank you!
Andes: It's true and I know you yourself love to sing.
Steven: It's true. I admit. But I did get to sing TVB songs
(blah blah)
Andes: Where did all the songs gone?
Steven: TVB keep them.
(Talk about maybe TVB should release albums of past tvb themesongs. Steven says that Linda Chung's cd has AJCL themesong, A Little Story. They agree it would be a good idea indeed.)
Talk abut his past composing and writing songs.
-- Steven has composed music and written lyrics before. see link
--- Steven mentions only these songs below but there are more songs than he mentioned.
------- his very 1st song composed and written by is his 1995 "无情雨" (3rd album) and "谁原伴我" ---------------and then he forgot there's another one.
Steven talks about his new song
----At first he had intended the melody as a slow tune.@ 17:00
--- But his manager Sandy Lau and the album producer were of the opinion that the song should be more upbeat and faster in rhythm.
------Steven especially loves the percussion namely the drums
-----Andes says Steven's singing the song is more open - like breaking down barriers.
--- Steven: Cos' have grown older
----Andes: Has nothing to do with it. Maybe because at different stage of life, our vocal changes --------accordingly. Steven agrees.
--- Steven says also his mind has become more positive, that these days he won't overthink.
---- His attitude is: Doesn't matter, as a person, whatever you want to do, go do it so long it is not a crime or harm people. Whatever you want then go do it.
Andes says Steven: You are so you. Your expression just now - you were that way too in the past.
Steven: In the past, I was that way too, ha?
-- The discussion veered into different behavior with different people. Like something as a man you can only talk with men, or only talk with women, etc.
song break.
@ 27:43 Host: Steven has been much more sanguine now than in the past, his attitude has become more positive.
Steven: Now, when I look at a situation, while seeing its negative at the same time can also discern the positive side of it. Even a negative situation may have a positive to it. It just depends on how you see it. An outwardly bad news may actually be a blessing in disguise. That’s how I like to see things these days. Also, don’t nitpick on other people’s flaws. Who amongst us do not have flaws? If that person is your family member, you must accept it and be tolerant. If the person is your friend, you still need to be tolerant. If the person is not a friend and you really can’t accept his/her flaw(s) then just don’t see each other lo, you’ve a choice to choose your friends ma. But if you have this attitude that seek out the good in a person, you’ll see that person in a better light. Your attitude determines what you see. [..] I totally buy this saying: "We can’t change other people’s mindset but we change ours." [..] So be more 'siu sa' and don’t get mired in little insignificant things[..] . What you think is a flaw in a friend may actually be a strength, just that it does not fit in with your own standard or requirement so you see it as a flaw. Just let it go! ( Syun la!)
Andes: Looking at Steven, so cheerful, continue to be a youngster!
Steven : No way, man, I puke! Don't call me a youngster! In weibo, they sometimes like to describe me as cute(“可爱”). I truly want to die lo! I said: Please don't use “可爱” to describe me. Truly I'm not “可爱” . I see myself as a mature person. Just that my looks is as such, can't be changed." 在微薄有时候她们喜欢形容我“可爱”。我真想死呀!我说:不要用“可爱”来形容我。 的确我内心不是“可爱型” 我自我是个成熟的人, 可奈我样貌是这样,改不了
Steven's mindset greatly influenced the songs he composed.
10 original songs with one bonus track -- just because he loves that Christian song so much (tn:bet I know what song that is - a song he has sung many times already.)
The songs are theme centered.
--- An Understanding - on friendship
---on familial love
-- forgiveness
-- (??)
-- tolerance
-- sacrifice - in positive way
-- others
- 2 Mandarin songs
Steven thanks people who helped him including his album producer, TBM- the Rich Music (Christian music company), etc.
Steven describes his hands-on and immersion in the whole production of his new album, unlike in the past where all he did was just record his songs, that's all. Including his makeover and pictures, everything.

Andes: What kind of music you are leaning towards in your album?
Steven: No jazz. but rock for sure. ??? All real instruments in the recording with synthesizer. Even bought some specific instruments for the musical effect.
Andes: A big monetary investment.
Steven: Yes, very grateful for the investor's support and confidence in them to enable them to produce such a superior quality album. Steven talks about recording and microphone high quality.
song break
Steven sings his songs in various vocal range using different mike.
song break (But I miss you finally; honey)
Steven talks about what he did during his separation from TVB -- slightly over a year. About his stage performance in US, hence heightening his desire to get back on singing.
Steven plans to hold a mini concert -- about 500 seating.

Actually I had no intention of uploading this audio but for the just off the press tabloid smearing of Steven reporting that hew displeased with Evergreen replacing Bobby. Steven might have lamented not being able to co-star with Bobby (like we all did ), since the last time was way back in FOJ 4, and even then they did not share many scenes together, but don't believe he would say anything derogative about Evergreen as replacement. But the report truly blackened Steven. Ai, Steven, why did you choose to come back to TVB? Why?
So Property Protector has not even begin production but already tabloids are up to their old tricks at creating discord among friends.

Updated 4-22-2013 circles: 2013-4-22 Music album
How Steven's HiFi quality music come about?
He new songs are all composed recently just for the album, starting end of last year.
Opening intro: After a 10-year absence Steven returns this year to the music world to plug his new song, An Understanding. A lapse of 10 years, Steven still persists with his love of music, in June he will release a new music album of hi fi quality. Among the songs Steven composed and wrote five of them, so just how passionate Steven is for music, we all understand. What make Lok Lok (hostess) curious is why made Steven decide to invest in a hi fi quality (fa siu dip)? Let's invite Steven who put in his all into this album after a 10-year absence.
S: At first did not think to make a hi fi album, just a normal album of new songs. But my album supervisor, Acky (?), he himself is into hi fi album, moreover, his recording studio is also adequately equipped to make one, and he himself also designs superior music. He has experience and credential to enable me to produce an album of this superior (hi fi) standard. When the idea was proposed to the investors, they were willing to budget for it. So that how the totally new hi fi album came about.
H: Understand that 5 of the songs in the album are composed by you.
S: Yes, quite tough.
H: So, are some of them already composed prior to this or are they all newly composed just for this album?
S: They are all newly composed for this album. The preparation started end of last year.
H: Wow! That's quick
S: Can be considered quick. The album supervisor puts in most of his time producing this album, and me too. Everyday, we start at 6 pm to begin the recording. In actuality, can't start the recording at 6 pm right away. He has to (bo?) mike, choose the mike, and pick the mike for what I use. It is not until around 8 pm that we can go into the studio to do the recording. The pre-recording run-thru is like attending a class.
H: Because of high standard?
S: That, and also because I knew nothing about hi fi recording, so he had to explain details to me, not unlike attending a class. So the actual recording usually starts around 9 pm and lasted into the night around 3-4 am everyday. This way we can fully utilize our time.
H: After the album is out, can also publish a book on how to produce a hi-fi superior quality music album.
S: That is up to the supervisor. For me, I can only take care of composing and writing the songs, and my own singing. I'm grateful that the supervisor is satisfied with my vocal. That the mike used can fully display my full vocal. He said that all my singing broke two of his mikes. If the song is more emotional I might have to sing a bit more aggressively, so he had to adjust the mike to accommodate the loudness. And have to use different for different style of singing. The process was very enjoyable.
H: The plugged song is 心照 (An Understanding) , and it is also composed and written by you? And you have a pseudonym as Yi Ngau. (2 Buffaloes). Why?
S. My friends also asked me the same question - Who is this 2 Buffaloes? I said you know him well. Who? Me? Actually I first took on this name when I shot A Journey Called Life - just to be more low-key because it had been a long time since I wrote lyrics.
H: Any meaning to it?
S: There is meaning to it. In mainland 'two' ( 二; er) means slightly 'dim' as in dimwitted, not as a derogative but more of an offhanded remark , and ngau (牛, niu) means 'great', 'terrific', 'amazing' etc. Together 2 buffaloes -- amazing idiot.
H: Thank you, Steven Ma. Best wishes.

CRHK circles: Steven on his HiFi Quality album production
The song played is 好想拥抱一个人 (Really want to hug someone). The past few months Steven has been working on his album composing, writing and recording songs.
He explains the production and recording of his hifi superior quality (fa-siu 發燒碟) album. Actual vocal and music are separated.
a)First, the album supervisor did a computerized music arrangement for a preliminary demo disk/file.
b)Second, Steven goes to the studio to record his vocal singing accompanied by the digital instrument music.
c) This demo disk is later sent to relevant people in places including HK and LA. These people accordingly arranged the actual real life instrumental music. They then sent the the file to Steven.
d) When Steven received the actual instrumental recording file, only then did he record the song with the actual instrumental music in the studio for the final take.
e) For every song, a specific microphone is chosen for best performance of the singing.
f) Steven paid just as much attention to his singing on the demo disk as the finalized, so that the instrumental music coordinator can get the feel of Steven's singing of the song, thus arranged the music accordingly with different music instruments to evoke the right kind of mood. This is a kind of respect shown to the musicians so they can play with feeling to the song.

1圈圈 3-27-2013 Steven Ma: Behind closed door, practise singing to be a singer again.
馬浚偉:閉關錄歌再做歌手
The past few months Steven has isolated himself to prepare for his new music album. (10 songs in all ?) The mini music album is totally organic in that there is absolutely no technology enhancement to his singing and that real music instruments are used as accompaniment. 7 of the songs in the album though resembling Christian songs are not praise songs but are pop songs that have a theme centering on universal love including familial love, friendship, etc. The other 3 songs are regular pop songs. What Steven finds most stressful is that half the songs on the album are composed and written by him. He's already finished 4 of the 5 songs, leaving one one to do, so these days he has isolated himself to get the last song done. The other 5 songs are composed and written by others, one of them is a Singaporean renowned, folk song singer, songwriter and writer, 梁文福. Steven is very thankful that he (Singaporean) charges minimal to compose the songs, and pay attention to Steven's criteria. Steven is truly enjoyed immersing himself in making music.
note: The song in the background is Steven's old song -- Honey - 蜜糖

Circles April 03- 2013 Back to Music Must Present a New Feel.
1圈圈: 馬浚偉 - 重返樂壇要有新感覺
~~Verbatim translation~~
Actually in recent years, besides acting I never give up on my creative work. The year before in 2011, I published a book entitled "Easy cooking, healthy life", to add to my earlier five other books (published in the past).. I've never abandoned my literary work. Last year I learned how to write script. This time to prepare for my music album besides writing lyrics I also composed music. I'm not a music person - I entered the music industry because I did learn singing from music teachers but I never learned formally on how to play a musical instrument. However, in the early days when I released music albums I did learn how to play the electronic keyboard. so now I fall back on my keyboard at home to compose different melodies, get them recorded and send to the composition supervisor to come up with a preliminary song.
My one requirement for composing the music and writing the lyrics is that I must be by myself, isolated from all extraneous distraction, absolute silence, tv or any sound emitting stuff must be turned off. With eyes closed, I would sit before a keyboard letting loose my creativity on the keys - to come up with a tune I like. At this moment in time, I came up with 4 songs, can't said the whole process was extremely difficult but they were indeed challenging since I haven't release a music album for so long, (last album was in 2003) so I hope to present a fresh feel to the listeners. I always said to the music composition supervisor and music friends that it must have this one thing, (substance??) The songs must have a fresh feel, including my own singing style - attentive to using different voice range for different song - low pitch, medium pitch etc. I want to use my rather strong, deep voice that my parents bestowed on me to draw in th listeners.
TN: Don't understand why the DJ played an irrelevant female singer's song in the background. So discourteous to Steven! Why not played Steven's song?

Steven talks about how he has never given up on singing but that he mostly sings tv series themesongs or subtheme songs.
Updated:
- As to return as a prof singer inthe music industry, he does not have that thought.
- Because to make music is something to be trifled with just putting aside some hours into it.
- Has to respect the professional singers and musicians who expend much efforts and time into producing an album that may even take 1 year or 2.
- That being said, I've never given up on singing.
- In upcoming 2013, the reality of my producing a new album is a certainty. I will have my own new songs, not themesongs.
- Right now, I'm in the groundwork preparation stage.
- I'll start with releasing 1 or 2 news songs, will treat that as my own interest, and see how's the response.
- So now I'm contact many people in the music industry, or someone who can transform my image - just a part of my artistic journey.
- But obviously I can't be like a professional singer spending much time in it.
- But still this my early career and moreover have had released numerous (tn:14) albums so I don't want to give up on it.
- So I hope I can come up with a good song to be played in radio stations or various mediums for all to listen to. website list of Steven's monologue topics in 881 Circles

CRHK Steven's relationship with TVB Producer Leung Choi Yuen.
Monologue Aired October 16th 2012
Reminiscing my years in TVB, it has been 18 years going into 19. I was foremost a singer in the earlier years but it was not until I filmed “Duke of Mt. Deer (1998)”, an ancient drama by Producer Tim Gor (Lee Tim Sing), whereby I played the Emperor, and Jordan Chan was Wai Siu Bo that I truly forayed into the acting path. (“Finally miss you” song played) Now that I look back I realize that one particular producer that I collaborated the most is Uncle Choi, Leung Choi Yuen. I first collaborated with him back in a very old tvb telemovie, Cul De Sac ( 亲子大绑架) . At that time there were still telemovies being filmed but not now; usually the movie was around one and half hours to two hours. And their drama format is very similar to regular movies’. Usually they were aired on Saturday or Monday on the tv. They were actually pretty good. That was our first collaboration, and thereafter, wah, Uncle Choi and I collaborated many, many times. Such as: Steps, A Journey called Life, A Watchdog’s Tale, Ghost Writer, 7 Days in a Life, The Life and Times of a Sentinel, and yeah, also, Land of Wealth. (7) We all called him Choi Shuk or Uncle Choi. But I often called him “Foster Father”. Haha! Because in TVB many people feel that he sees me as a son. Indeed our tacit understanding of each other is very strong. His trust in me, and the freedom he gives me is truly enormous. Nah, it’s not that other producers won’t, in fact I’ve pretty good relationships with other producers too, such as: Siu Ching Jeh (Miu Siu Ching), or Tim Gor (Lee Tim Sing) or Mr. Tsui Yu On and Amy Wong, whom I’ve not collaborated for a long time. But of course the more we collaborated the deeper our interacted fate and the stronger our mutual understanding of each other. So I can’t deny that all these years the person who has the best relationship with me and knows me best has to be Uncle Choi. (song played)
There ‘s one thing I'm most grateful to him is that he always said these words to me: Ta-ke-la (It’ll be fine), you’re here I don’t have to worry. Because he knows that I’m.. frankly speaking.. I’m a person with high standards. When I join a series I won’t just see myself as actor but will see this (series) as my child. So when I’m part of a production I wish it to be good. So for my own part I’ll give it my best, and Uncle Choi understands my character so he gives me lots of freedom, and plenty of space, and also enormous trust - we have this give and take interaction. So whenever I shot Uncle Choi’s series, we were really like a big family. In Uncle Choi’s production, I collaborated the most with Linda Chung. In almost all our collaborations there were also Linda, and Fala, too. So these two understand more my relationship with Uncle Choi – I admit - a father-son relationship. I truly cherish it – of the people I encounter in my career life who have similar philosophy, similar ideals as mine, and also mutually tolerant and supportive of each other.
