Steven Ma's sexual orientations have always been suspect and yesterday a
magazine suggested that he is gay. Taking part in the International
Festival of Inclusive Arts yesterday, Steven reacted to the reports with
a laugh.
Steven says that regarding this report, he has already spoken about this
numerous times in the past. Then, the rumour was that he was having a
homosexual relationship with his manager and he has already responded to
this. He feels if he has to explain himself every time, then it gets a
bit pointless. When the reporters suggest that he should find a
girlfriend to quash the rumours, he does not feel that he should use
this as a reason to meet a girl and when the point comes when he is
ready to get married, then he will definitely reveal this and his family
have never worried about his marriage. Steven emphasizes that he just
has a laugh from these reports and he is glad that they are not saying
that he takes drugs, because he is very against this behaviour and will
not make friends with drug addicts. Has he been the target of gay men?
He smiles he has not, maybe a few suggestions, but no direct
propositions. He feels that even if someone tries to court him, then he
will just tell them the truth and they can still continue to be friends.
If there is body contact, then he would definitely fight back.
Steven will be joining Kate Tsui and Selena Li to perform with three
members of the band Wild Zappers, who are deaf and also sing a duet with
blind girl as well as singing the 'Chu Song'. Kate and Selena have
spent many hours rehearsing for this show and Kate says that one of the
band members is a dance choreographer and although he cannot hear the
music, he knows how to dance along to the beat and is very professional.

Steven Ma Experiencing the full flavor of life

asianfanatics post 1129
2006-11-6
From a singer to an actor in tv series, Steven Ma's life experiences matured him. He now learns to savor life. Steven will soon wrap up his new series, The Change of Destiny. The next new project will not be until early December. All in all, he will have about half a month's break to prepare for tvb anniversary gala program and to buy some visitations gifts for his adopted little friends when he visits them in Hebei province. For this year, this break will be the longest; he can rest for a while.
Can’t call it emotional, after all, the return to his hard work has already exceeded expectation. If the awards are not taken too seriously, and if the wins and losses are viewed lightly, then Ma Zai is already contented.
“I believe I’ve ample confidence in myself now, and will now go with the flow.” In the midst of all this hoopla over the hotly contested award titles, apparently Ma Zai has always been considered by TVB insiders as a dark horse. This horse does not contend for first and keeps a low-profile. Yet who would dare to summarily dismiss him? Relying solely on a persevering, fighting spirit, he carves out a niche in the entertainment world for himself.
Recalling the past, following the termination of his contract with his manager, Mazai took off on his own. That year, his wealth increased but fame decreased. His exposure in tvb series greatly diminished; meanwhile, a new crop of actors burgeoned in abundance. At one time, Steven’s low profile greatly worried those who cared about him.
When TVB beckoned him, and invited him to sign a management contract, he mulled over it for almost 5 months. He carefully weighed the pros and cons, visualizing all that could and would happen scenarios, and on how to deal with them accordingly if so; only when he was mentally and psychologically prepared did he then pick up the pen to sign the contract.
To Mazai, filming Safeguards was a taxing job that put both his will power and physical strength through the wringer. July, August and September are the hottest months in the year. Everyday he worked under the scorching sun; riding a horse; shooting a fight scene; and sweat drenched each and every one of his shirts. At its worst, Mazai made do with only two hours of sleep each night, before getting right back to work.
“During that period, the minute I clambered into the car I would turn on this one particular song. I listened to it everyday, nonstop. I had to persevere. I had to get through. With its help, I survived the return passage to TVB, thus got through a very tough period of adjustment."
The song, is Alan Tam’s Catching up from behind. At this crucial phase, one of Alan’s songs inadvertently became the battle song that motivated and supported Mazai’s resolute in his forging ahead.
“Tired but very happy, especially knowing that Safeguards has garnered me three award nominations: best actor, most favorite male character, most improved actor; the feelings more intensified.”

"I always knew what I was doing. Venturing outside enabled me to see new things, to perform on stage in North America, to shoot a mainland tv series, and to be in advertisements. All these opened my eyes to new experiences."

After a rainy night shines bright, sunny skies雨夜背后怒放艳阳.Hope the pain will translate into strength, catching up from behind愿痛苦化造力量从后赶上.Success arises out of struggles with despondence成功首先是必经失意的对抗
Yes, he has fallen behind, but being 'behind' was Steven's own choice. No need to worry, no need to complaint. If you filmed less series, then naturally other people will have opportunities. He is not envious nor is he jealous of anybody. Only that, he knows in order to catch up he will have to work harder, that ultimately what he desires will still be within his reach.
Regained self-confidence salves his wounds. Mazai’s entertainment journey is not smooth at all; the hardship incomprehensible to other people. Fortunately, he has now learned how to be strong, more importantly, he has become ‘independent’. (become his own man)
“I’ve chosen my visionary path. Work hard. Always put in my best into each and every character. Enjoy my work in all each and every series. Enjoy the camaraderie of colleagues. I'm happier now.”
Mazai, who now appreciates the joy of acting, likes to take out case after case of video tapes to re-watch his own works during his leisure. He wants to critique his old works through new eye. “Ah! If I were to re-act this scene, I would not have acted it this way. Ah! This expression could be better. Maybe can do it this way…”
His accompanying friends would hear his constant lamentations over his acting deficiencies in the past. This dissecting mindset of his is gathering strength and not constrained to tv series only. Take his singing!
He entered the entertainment world as a singer therefore, of course, possesses a good voice. Because he had the singing skill; in the past, Mazai always meticulously sang every note just right (mun mun yuan yuan). His friends listening to his singing would tease him and call his singing “very tight”. Now that he is more relaxed, Mazai realizes belatedly their ‘tight’ actually implies “not good enough”. These days wherever he had the opportunity to karaoke with friends, he would select some oldies to sing along, putting in as much feeling as he could into his singing. Sing with feelings, only then can one be considered a good singer. Recently, listened to him sing ‘The turns of fortune’ 《轮流转》once again. He truly sang it with a feel of having experienced life vicissitudes; a maturity ripened by adversities; mesmerizing, lingering. When the music stopped, friends all around unexpectedly applauded, and whistled…
“Wah! You guys are even more fans than my fans, more enthusiastic.” Mazai laughed happily. He was happy because he to sing out the flavor of this song is truly not easy. A few years ago, he and a group of veteran friends went to karaoke; he sang 《轮流转》。He grasped the mike and proceeded to sing. His vocal was considerably good but a sincere friend told him a home-truth; heavy words but genuine from a sincere heart.
“To really sing this song well, you still need to gain more life experiences; to evoke the true essence of this song is not that easy.”
Mazai stored the words in the back of his mind. He looked upon that as his goal to advance to. And today, the song’s essence was evoked by his singing; he had indeed mature. Truth be told, without having experienced life’s vicissitudes, human minds will not open up; once open, only then can they experience and absorb the full flavor of life.
35 years old already; October 26, met up with Mazai on his birthday, and talked about his birthday wishes. He solemnly said: “35 already, so fast. Feel like there’re still a lot of things I haven’t done. But anyway, what is most important to me is health. With good health and spirit, only will there be vigor.” Saying himself ‘dai gor zai’, Mazai said these days he only wishes to make more and better quality shows, and that his life goals and objectives will be of longer term.
Mazai is considered the most suitable actor to succeed Adam Cheng in ancient dramas. “I truly don’t mind acting in more ancient dramas at all because I enjoy being an ancient period character. I feel that I was born into the wrong era. I enjoy portraying historical figures. Every time I don the ancient costumes, it’s like I’ve entered a time tunnel where imagination can soar and be infinite. I wish to portray a character in the early republican era in China. And also as Zhuge Liang, and Lun Xun also. I really want to portray them.”
Before signing up with tvb, Mazai acted in a mainland China tv series 《昭君出塞》 as a cameo character. Nevertheless when the series was aired in cctv, his character, 王莽, left a deep impression on the viewers. During the production, Mazai got on well with the director.
Don’t be afraid of uncharted waters. Be self-confident and don’t be flustered. These days, Ma Chai has grown up, not only possesses a big brother’s demeanor "阿哥", but also 洋溢于眉宇间. (wth was that? Furrowed brows?) Self-confidence is the best cosmetic; knowledge provides the best skin care regiment. This is a truism. Physical appearance will age in time, but humans can preserve everlasting perfection not through exterior appearance, but rather through possessing a clean spirit, and the continuous enlightenment of the mind. Be contented so will not be enticed by fame and fortune; be diligent for knowledge so can achieve sublimity. And these are what Mazai most wanted to pursue.
“Luck is already at your side! Mazai!”

Steven Ma as red wine, fresh milk
Posted 13 October 2007 - 08:00 AM
Summarized intro: Showbiz, like red wine, is all about place of cultivation, year of production, and taste. Likewise, after 13 years of showbiz immersion, Steven has the goods to become a bottle of good wine. But then again, maybe he is just a glass of bland fresh milk?
Rather be taken advantage of than to take advantage 「
Safeguards’ rating was a triumph; however, Steven, the person, attracts more news attention than his alter ego, the Big 4th Boss; participation in a charity show, somehow became a sexual indecency scandal; vacation in Taiwan with girlfriend, somehow became Steven got ‘straightened’ by a superwoman innuendo; to top it all off, his past love relationships are once again dredged up and spun repeatedly through the gossip mill. Some female entertainers might have had welcomed the frequent tabloids' headlines and cover pages, but as a man, Steven must have felt the strain under such unrelenting negativity.
Hu: Do you feel you're like a magnet to controversy?
S: Maybe I handle stuff differently from other artistes. When faced with bad press, I seldom respond. Therefore, people think I’m an easy target, and will try to get more flesh out of me next time. As for the recent news, I really don’t know what to say. The captions are so nauseating. (ref: pervert charge - salty pork hands; see pix link) Admittedly, that picture is indeed suggestive. But people got to realize, what artiste would do such a thing in a show that was aired live before millions of viewers. The tabloids want to sensationalize that incident; there’s nothing I can do. I admit my dancing technique is weak, the rehearsal was brief, only a few hours or so. Luckily, I had a tight grip on her and didn’t drop her at the end of the dance; else, the papers would have had a field day with this caption, "After indecent groping, Steven kills to prevent victim’s accusations."
Hu: How do you deal with such negativity?
S: In the past, I brooded; tried finding solace in liquor, also tried locking myself in a room, crying. Over time, I came to believe so long heaven and earth know of my innocence, my conscience is clear. The present day viewers are pretty clear-eyed; they won’t continue to misunderstand me forever. Instead of wasting time refuting, why not expend that energy into doing good works so that people, within their limited leisure time, can get to know me better. The tabloids may denigrate me to worth less than a penny; the important thing is, that I’m not.
H: Such high-road attitude. Won’t that corrode? (reputation)
S: Used to think so. But, does silence really induce corrosion, not necessarily. If I explain every detail, maybe some people might say, "Oh, Steven really had nothing to do with it." But then again, others would sure to retort, "Steven is so cheap to bad mouth people like that." Won the argument, but lost on conduct; it’s all so pointless. My father once said: "Rather I being taken advantage of than to take advantage." Every rebuttal will hurt people. I dare to say this, that I can hold my head up high in front of everybody.
H: The homosexual accusation, was that the most damaging rumor?
S: As of today, there is no one such rumor that can truly hurt me. Frankie (his ex-manager) was my mentor. When I first entered the industry, he signed me up for 7 years, which was later extended to 3 more years. During this period, he developed and took care of me. He is a very attentive man, maybe that’s how the misconception started. To me, he was a very good manager. There’s no reason to end our contract just because of the rumors. Whatever rumors about me will not influence me. So long, I take responsibility for my work, who I’m with is of no concern to anybody.
Every time, Steven dances, things happened. In 2002, after his Latin dance with Sonija Kwok in Miss Hong Kong Pageant final, rumors spread of their dating, and Steven was fingered as the culprit who spilled the beans on their 3 months dating. The lady accused him of self-promotion. Recently, he was accused of indecent touching on Rain Li’s bottom during their dance together. Steven laughs, "I’m not scared to dance. Next time, I will partner Chu Mi Mi, nothing would happen then."
I’m Truly Lucky
Steven is obstinate. Rumor has it that he has a millionaire girlfriend: Shi Hui Ling. But he has made up his mind not to talk about it, and that's that. Steven has been in showbiz for 13 years. He is 35 years old this year, so naturally he has contemplated much on his career path and future. Two years ago, when his contract with Frankie ended, he decided to strike out on his own. Last year, he formally signed a contract with TVB in June. For sure, a big tree can provide better shade. (meaning a big company can provide more opportunities.)
Hu: So in the end, back to TVB?
S: Actually, TVB and I have always had a contract. It’s just that the contract then was more flexible; it allowed leeway of outside work and endorsements. When my contract with Frankie ended, I became a free agent. Honestly, money wise, it was really very lucrative. Also, the ability to completely control one’s success or failure was very self-satisfying. But, freelancing can also create dire predicaments.
Once, while filming in Meizhou, one night we went to a local disco for an location filming for a scene. When we got there, suddenly there were people holding up banners; somehow it had become my concert. Even selling the admission ticket for 120+ yuan each. Turned out the film producer did not pay rental to the disco management; he tricked the owner into thinking that I would perform on stage to cover the rent; thus, I became the sacrificial lamb. I'm stubborn; I absolutely refused; the people wanted to beat me up. I said, "Go ahead, beat me to death here!"
How did it end? I called up Li Ru En’s husband (Ceng Zhi Ming) for help. His factory was in Meizhou. He sent in his factory foreman and called in the public security (police). So for the rest of the filming in Meizhou, I had a police escort. There’re things that artistes cannot easily take of. I didn’t want to deal with the mountain folks, and it just happened at that time, TVB sought me out. I thought the time was right to sign on.I will now concentrate on filming. My most fervent wish is to perform on stage, no matter how small the role may be, I’m willing. (translator’s add- on: Steven got his wish. He will perform the male lead in 王子复仇记, a Chinese version Hamlet, on stage in Hong Kong Cultural center from Nov 22-25th. Rehearsals have started since Sept 11. His character will recite poetry, sing and swordplay in the show. )

Hu: What is the most important thing you’ve learned from your years of outside ventures?
S: That I am truly insignificant. In China filming industry, even a minor actor posses great acting skills. He can effortlessly do 8 back springs in a row, then somersault 360 degrees mid-air to land gracefully onto his feet. If it’s me, after 3 springs, I would need an understudy. Just in Beijing alone, there are some 200,000 professional thespians. For each role, there are over 2,000 candidates fighting over it. In the past, I took my male lead for granted, but after my eye-opening experience outside, I now know how very lucky I am. Before, I took criticisms hard. A classic example was in Healing Hands 1. Zhen Jie, (TVB upper management) always complained that I would not open my mouth wide to speak the lines. My upper lip would not move. I thought to myself, when I was young, my two upper front teeth were chipped; a deep inverted v separated them. It was only when I was 20 years old that I had them fixed. So all those years, I learned to speak without moving my upper lip. But now I know, understanding and explanations are of no use. The viewers only see the performance; they are not interested in knowing why. Don’t expect people to understand you. If you performed poorly, naturally there’ll be others to replace you. (H: Steven has since corrected that habit of not moving his upper lip while talking.)
Amending a Regret.
Besides acting, Steven’s career also includes book publishing. He grew up in Sham Shui Po-Bak Tin. From young, he was used to seeing discarded used syringes on the back staircase in their building. In the back alleys, the most common sight was the presence of hooligans and prostitutes. His father, a bus driver, was the sole breadwinner in a family of seven. His mother was a long-time nose cancer patient who died a few years back. The materials of his published books drew heavily on his childhood background, which include: suicide, the family of a cancer patient and problem teenagers. Steven has never concealed his humble origin. Maybe to overcome self-inferiority is to face it head on.
Hu: Why book publishing?
S: First, it’s purely sentiment. My 1st and 2nd jobs after graduation were in sales in Longman and Ling Ji publishing companies, respectively. Second, in the past, I was often looked down by people, so I wanted to prove my ability. I still remember that time not long after I entered the industry, a friend sent me home. At first, he thought I lived in Kowloon Tong, but when he found out that I lived in Sham Shui Po, he immediately locked all his car doors. He looked disgusted. I thought to myself, "Was that necessary?" Even though Sham Shui Po may be a slum, it’s not representative of its people. I’ve never studied in a university; my academic education is only Form 5 standard, so being a publisher is a sort of psychological compensation.
H: Aren’t you worried that people would think you’re seeking approbation and fame?
S: Only 2000 odd books are published per run. It’s a breakeven, can’t even make profits. What fame is there to laud? What compliments are there to fish? How people see me, I don’t care.
H: Do you feel that you don’t belong to this time period?
S: Yes, showbiz really doesn’t suit me. The competition is too fierce. But I’ve never participated in it. My personality is similar to Cao Zhi; won’t compete or exploit, always being bullied. I think if I were born in late Qing dynasty, I would be most happy. I love to read history books. The ending periods of the Qing dynasty were very turbulent. The citizens could put themselves out for their country, spilling hot-red blood. If I were in that generation, I’m certain I would be part of the revolution. But I don’t think I would be as radical as the 6 martyrs, or as self-sacrificial as Qiu Jin. I think I would be more like Luxun kind; I would use words and films/stage shows to resist the Japanese.
A Qing Model
Today, seems like I’ve just taken a class on China’s recent history and on Chinese thoughts. Steven loves to read Late Qing dynasty history , and also books by philosopher Tang Jun Yi, especially his 人 生 之 体 验.If not for the fact that I was solidly stuck in Lan Gui Fan Bar, I would have been deluded by Steven’s Qing appearance, thinking myself transported back to the early 20th century. Teacher Tang (Jun Yi) once said: the world mystifyingly doles out random praises and also mystifyingly metes out random hurt. I can relate to that; the entertainment circle is where most of this randomness is fabricated.

2006 Brokeback Price ranking
Info Per a HK escort agency on the “Ranking of Millionaires’ Prices for a one night stand with actors.”
paraphrased condensed excerpt:
Even though many gay millionaires are drawn to actors this kind of gay sex trafficking posed a great difficulty to escort agencies. “Many actors no matter how much money was offered them refused to take this route.” Hence, despite the exorbitantly high prices offered, there were few if any takers at all. Moreover, if a wrong person was approached with the offer, the agent might even be berated with a stream of cussing. Conversely, it was much easier to approach the 3rd or 3th line actors who were strapped for money therefore would do anything for money.

paraphrased condensed excerpt:
Even though many gay millionaires are drawn to actors this kind of gay sex trafficking posed a great difficulty to escort agencies. “Many actors no matter how much money was offered them refused to take this route.” Hence, despite the exorbitantly high prices offered, there were few if any takers at all. Moreover, if a wrong person was approached with the offer, the agent might even be berated with a stream of cussing. Conversely, it was much easier to approach the 3rd or 3th line actors who were strapped for money therefore would do anything for money.

news 2006 SM TVB Kids Festival ambassador
[Ta Kung Pao 26/06/06]
As the TVB Children's Festival Ambassador for 2006, Steven Ma will also be singing the new theme tune to the "After School ICU" kids show, that will soon be undergoing a revamp. As the song is needed urgently, Steven was out early to film the video for it. The weather on the day of filming was extremely hot, over 30 degrees with the sun shining, so Steven was dripping with sweat, sticking his tongue out and even showing his nipples.
Steven laughs in jest: "Everyone has them, so it's not unusual for them to stick out. It is very hot though, but I am nowhere near as bad as Chung Chung here. His costume is so hot and heavy and he has to play basketball with me too. I am afraid he will get heatstroke if we carry on." In order to tie in with the theme of the song, the shoot took place in a school and Steven was pleased to find that the library had a copy of his publishing company's book "Turn Good Turn Bad". He says: "I took some time out to go and buy some books from the library, but the teachers were very nice and wouldn't let me pay."
Later, Steven headed off to Sai Kung Pier to continue filming, where he had to sit in a wooden chair to read and then get up and walk towards the camera, but when he did this, the chair stuck to him and he had to NG. The crew laughed: "You have a chain, but don't know how to use it!" It turned out that the fashionable chain that Steven had on his trousers had hooked onto the chair and had dragged it along with him.

Steven Ma - Still Racing, Still Dancing
reposted from AF
Steven Ma - Still Racing, Still Dancing

When inviting Steven Ma for an interview, his manager insisted we had to interview him from a new perspective, but what is a 'new perspective'?
It appears that Steven has recently become fascinated by ballroom dancing, so it was suggested that the photoshoot and interview took place in a dance studio. Of course this was good and Steven even provided his own costumes, so less problems for this reporter.
Remembering Steven from a number of years ago, what did he feel his worst skill was? He said without a thought: "Dancing, my dance is very ugly."
So all along, we have never seen Steven dance, until March of this year when he marked his return to TVB by doing a dance with Rain Li on the Pok Oi Charity show, but when he accidentally touched Rain on a sensitive area, he was quickly labelled as a 'salted trotter' [Cantonese slang for a perv].
With such a setback, if it was the Steven of before, then he should have seen dancing as a poisonous snake or a terrible beast and evaded it as far as he can, but it was this accident that did not dispel him from learning to dance, but continued his desire to keep learning.
Steven says that after learning to dance and watching himself so much in the mirror, it has helped him to build up his confidence.
Maybe I think too much, but having matured in the midst of boos, Steven should know how to look failure in the face.
At least, he would be used to it.
Steven is a very careful person, when asked a question, he will think about it clearly before answering and you will never find any contradictory or rhetorical phrases such as "Oh, no..." or "I mean..." uttered from his lips.
So, when Steven announced he would be treading down the path towards the 'Best Actor' award, this is his motivation and I have reason to believe that he will not say this without a thought, or that he is being arrogant.
Although Steven is already the owner of his own publishing house, this 'horse' ['Ma' means horse in Chinese] is not happy to live an easy life, he is still racing and still dancing towards the limelight of stardom.

Returning to Drama Brings Rewards
Regarding dance, you can use the phrase 'not realising your talents until you try it' to describe Steven. Although he entered the industry as a singer, Steven has never spared a thought about learning to dance. The first time he took a dance lesson was to prepare for his performance in the Pok Oi charity show and depsite not having much time to rehearse, it gave a new feeling to Steven and the drive to continue learning, whilst preparing to film his new series "The Brink of Law". The result was the Steven fell in love with his new interest because he found that during his learning process, he has found a new confidence in everything he has done and just as when he left music for acting, he never imagined he would become a leading male.
Thinking back to 2004, Steven reached the dizzy heights of TVB's male leads and was even dubbed their 'lucky soldier' because even if the reviews were not very good for his series, the ratings were still pulling in highly. With his popularity and one series after another, Steven made the decision at this point to head into the mainland to make more money. His wallet became fuller, but his popularity in Hong Kong took a slippery slide downwards as he became known as TVB's 'abandoned soldier' instead. Just a difference of one word, but this one word made all the difference to his career.
A year later, Steven returned to TVB and signed a management contract with them, clearing his name from the word 'abandoned'. His first series after his return "Safe Guards" has also brought him the 'My Favourite Male Television Character' award at this year's TVB Anniversary Awards. To win this despite stiff competition from TVB's other leading men was a great surprise for Steven.
"That day when I won the award for my role in 'Safe Guards', I was very touched. When I was filming the series, I knew that it would do well, because the producer was Lee Tim Sing and there was a great cast that included Wayne Lai, Kwok Fung and Suet Nei, who are all very talented, so I felt that 'Safe Guards' would definitely win an award, but I never thought it would be me who won it."
In reality, before "Safe Guards" was aired, the expectation had been a small one from outside. The female leads for the show were criticised beyond belief, so for the series to find success, it was all down to the male cast and for Steven, there was quite a lot of pressure. "Once the producer saw me coming into TVB City and he tapped me on the shoulder and said: 'It's all down to you now!' and at that point, I did feel a lot of pressure.
"I remember on the Friday night when the finale was aired, I called into the company to ask about the ratings and they said that it peaked at 42 points, breaking all the recent Friday night records. I was so happy that I called out on the phone. I am not saying that I am really good, but I did have a feeling that this show would do well.
"It also brought me this award and at that point there was even more pressure on me, but to look at it positively, it made me focus towards winning the Best Actor award in the future. I like to prove people wrong and if you say this series will not do well, then I will make it do well to show you. Take for example 'Where the Legend Begins', people said that I can't do ancient costume series, so I worked very hard at it and the response was not bad. This feeling is very good."

Never Letting Go of Singing
With his career concentrating mainly on television in recent years, many people may have forgotten that Steven emerged from the music industry, where his slight resemblance on camera to Leon Lai earned him the nickname of 'Leon Lookalike' in the early days. Even his record company introduced the tagline 'He is not Leon, he is not Jacky' [Cheung] in his promotional material. There was a response, but it leant towards the negative and each time he appeared, it was to an audience of boos and jeers and this made Steven's musical career quite a difficult one.
TVB's current unwritten rule that most of their series theme songs will be sung by the male lead in the show has brought a new lease of life to singing stars who had left their musical roots to convert to television, giving them an opportunity to sing once again and re-live their former glory singing on the stage. For a top lead such as Steven, then singing theme songs has become an expectation, but for Steven as he faces the microphone again, he admits that there has been a change in his attitude from before.
"I have always still been able to sing as I often have stage performances to do and every time I do these, I will sing live to build the atmosphere. However, if you want me to spend six months or a year working on one album and then spend another few months promoting it. then I don't think I have this kind of time to spend on it any more. I just want to enjoy the experience of singing. For example, I worked with a Chinese Orchestra once in the past and although the time was short, the experience was very touching."
As well as singing, another recent passion of Steven's has been theatre and he hopes to be able to fulfil his ambition of treading the boards. "I have always been very interested in doing theatre and there should be an opening for me in 2007. However, I will have to put a lot of hard work into it because I want to do my very best if I am to do it at all. It is not because standing on a theatre stage makes me very suave that I want to do it, after all theatre is not like filming and if you do well on film, it is no indication that it will be the same on the stage."
Gossip Straight to the Heart
Whilst interviewing Steven, you cannot avoid talking about his gossip over the years, although Steven insists that there has only been three stories that he has been directly involved in. Even though he says he does not mind, but the usually calm and collected Steven will uncontrollably become rather agitated. At the very least, when I listen back to the interview tapes, I have to turn the volume down a little.
In thirteen years in the industry, he has been booed, he has been betrayed and having weathered the storms, he should be able to deal with gossip peacefully, but when his real emotions begin to show, he is still very angry.
"Since entering the industry, there have only been three pieces of gossip that were directly involving me - linking me with Astrid Chan in 'Healing Hands', then saying I had a crush on Ada Choi in 'Where the Legend Begins' and finally with Sonija Kwok. Anything after this has been proven to be unrelated to me, for example when filming 'Return of the Cuckoo', it was Michael Tong who tried to date Charmaine Sheh, and I had always suspected they wrote the wrong name down, but then the mistake becomes taken to be the truth.
"I don't have any feelings about rumours any more. You can't say I am accepting it, but how much gossip is actually true? A lot of it you forget as soon as you have read it. Since I found my freedom, I have not given a proper interview for two years, so when I see you [media] then I will say a few words. Each time I am interviewed though, they just ask me the same set of questions and talk about the same people and many reporters will not read the past reports about me and see that I have already responded no less than ten times, so they just keep on asking and I get very bored because it seems like I am purposely dragging out the incident to make publicity. In fact, I have done a lot of other things in the past few years and I have a lot of other things I want to share with people.
"Now I have a blog, it is quite good because I can share my things on my blog, such as the things I see and hear in the mainland and share my photographs by uploading them for my fans. What is recorded in there is the true Steven Ma.
"I do like to express myself in words and although I am only a F5 [high school] graduate, I have always had a love for reading and as well as novels, I will read anything else. In 2004, when I was working in the mainland, I did some self-study in the Open University's China Social Studies course and although I did not apply formally for the course or sit any exams, it still brought me a lot of knowledge.
"Although what I write does not have many layers of depth, at least I have started to gain a deeper understanding of language and set standards for my scripts. Whether it is my own or other people's writing, I can boldly criticise it and decide whether it is good or bad quality."
Maybe it is unintentional, but Steven seems to be showing an stamp of his authority through his words, but after all he is the owner of a publishing company and the person being interviewed, so he has the right to criticise this interview.

Trustworthy
After falling in love with ballroom dancing, the sense I get is that Steven has changed a lot and in every word and every action, he is full of confidence.
In the past, the thought of Steven twisting and turning pretending to dance, would not only give him, but also me goosebumps.
The Steven Ma of now though can spring into dance at any time and when he feels the urge, he will engage the make-up artist and show her a couple of moves, and seemingly knowing his stuff.
Despite the presence of the reporters, he forgets about this as he immerses himself into his dance and counts out so naturally the 1-2-3-4 of his dance steps with the make-up artist.
When I ask: "Are you not afraid of being reported as 'Salted Trotter' again?"
"No, I trust you."
However, I have reason to believe that he trusts himself more than he trusts me not to write something negative.
Whatever, I thank Mr Ma for his gracious words that has brought my own confidence back too.
