It is said in the southern part of China and else way in overseas Chinese communities that the Winter Solstice Festival is far more important the Chinese New Festival because it is the very important getting ready preparation for the coming winter.  It is the tradition for Chinese families to eat 'tong yuen" (glutinous rice flour dumpling), the latter's roundness a symbol of completeness of a family circle. (yuen = round, circle) In the northern part of China as stated by Steven fans, they eat various "siu gao" (pot stickers) instead.
