Summary:  Tavia's birthday's coming up (8/30). Steven  says of course the pp cast and crew will celebrate her birthday. Actually they had earlier celebrated her lunar birthday with a big dinner. Closer to her real birthday they will hold another birthday dinner celebration for Tavia. (note: which they did when Helen Ma brought with her 6 cheese cakes from HK when she and other cast members went over to mainland) Steven says at the dinner he won't be giving Tavia a present as she has asked for a big cash ang pow from him instead.

Tavia took a day off to attend the recent Beijing Films and TV series expo - Steven was supposed to go too but because of his abnormal heart beat he had to go to the hospital instead.  Tavia demonstrates how Steven's heart beat like a drum.

Note: Notice Steven and Tavia's synchronized rocking movement? Steven with his arm around Tavia's shoulder, and the latter leaning comfortably on Steven. Haha!  Though Steven's heart condition is no laughing matter but Tavia's description of a normal heartbeat versus Steven's heart's wild druming is funny.

Steven clarifies rumor on his return to tvb

Steven clarifies that as of now he can't confirm he will shoot a TVB series in May because of conflicting work schedules. He says returning to film a tvb series is just a matter of time, just that he can't confirm when since he has other work committments.

He denies the rumor that he had specifically picked Tavia as his partner in his return tvb series. When asked about the said rumor, Steven says if he returns to TVB he certainly will not specify who his female partner should be, just like he never did when he was in TVB. He believes chemistry can be sparked with just any partner. @2:54

Artiste Steven Ma attended a safety patrol event today. It is said that TVB executive Catherine Tsang is persuading Steven to return to film a series in May.  Steven admitted that the two of them have been talking but at this time he has not decided yet. "Zan Jie (Catherine Tsang) is my 'sifu' (master). My first choice would be to talk with 'sifu'.  But have not talked about the contract details.  Hopefully will do that before Chinese New Year."  (Will return?)  "I've many options.  Hong Kong or mainland, there are people wanting me to film series."  When asked under what conditions will he return, he said: "I'm not pursuing money, most important are the script and partner. (Who would make you want to return?) "Would also like to work with Fala Chen or Tavia"

TN: "also" meaning Steven must have mentioned other actresses besides Fala and Tavia.  Reporter put words in Steven's mouth, in a much later separate tv interview Steven clarified that he did not especially pick Tavia or any of his sisters for that matter as his return tv series female lead. 

So boring to always see Steven partnering his 3 sisters. Can we have some new partnerships with other big fadans, please, pretty please?  But then, TVB has no more big fadans left.  Just can't get myself excited by this news of Steven returning to TVB. Probably just the same old same old TVB series with Uncle Choi and one of his sisters.  Haiz! I'm more excited to watch his performance in LOTYEF.

Steven: Of course I'd have to talk about Tavia too. Prior to officially filming a tv series, I think right after she graduated from training school she did a TVB mv with me for the song, Miu Guai (Rose) and Ka Ming. I don’t know why that mv turns into a teacher-student love affair. It depicts me as a school teacher, and she. my student. The feel of the mv is very lame. At the time, I didn’t know her. Didn’t know she’s Tavia Yeung.

When we became familiar with each other she said to me: “Before, I didn’t like you.”

I said: “Huh, why?”

Tavia: “In the makeup room, I once greeted you but you ignored me. ”

I said: “When did you greet me?”

She said: “You came from behind me, and I nodded at you through the mirror.”

I said: “Dai lo wa! (Haiz!) You nodded at me through the mirror, how would I know you were nodding at me, wo? I was facing forward not looking at the mirror to see who’s looking at me and to respond to them through the mirror with a ‘Hello, how are you?’ or a ‘Good morning”. Can’t be that way ma.”

So she thought to herself: hng!  Ignored me? I'll ignore you too! It was not until we filmed Sweetness in the salt that she brought it up.

So I said to her: “Can you be more childish, Yeung Yi? In the makeup room, everyday, day in day out a crowd people in there, back and fro people passing through. Why would I look at the mirror to check out who’s greeting me, dai lo (haiz)?"

When face to face, people know that I will always smile at them and as common courtesy, will politely nod at them whether I know you or not or that you are a newbie, so long we have eye contact, as my habit because in the past I worked in sales, I’ll always politely nod my head at you as a common courtesy. Nothing to it. So how would I know that you disliked me because of that incident. At that time, we argued over it for a long time.

At that time, I thought you were also quite arrogant ba. Once I also nodded my head at you, and you ignored me too.

And she said: “That's because that time when I nodded my head at you, you ignored me so I ignored you too!

So I said: “See, how mo liu (petty) you are?”

Sometimes lei. Yeung Yi’s person is genuine and lovable. Our relationship is deep. Every time we meet, and she sees me from afar she will holler and hurry to me and give me a big hug. Just like ah gor (big brother) and ah miu (younger sister). With arms around each other, I would ask: “So what’s up? How have you been?”  Like earlier on she was under the weather, she would talk to me about her health etc. She is another person (besides Fala) I don’t have to worry about or be concern. Steven Ma joined TVB 19 years ago as a singer turned actor, and later becoming TVB  first line siu sang. He has filmed countless tv series but has had few romantic rumors, however he has great affinity with Tavia Yeung, Fala Chen and Linda Chung, respectively. With his rich life experiences he occasionally counseled these three women and also tried to help them resolve their problems, and so by and by, he unconsciously took on the role of a big brother to them.  Starting today for 5 days consecutively, Steven will reconstruct his growth fragments to piece together his journey of singer turned actor,  and other details of his life.

Over the years at TVB, besides my three god sisters, Tavia, Fala and Linda, there are many other artists including Kenneth Ma who also called me 'Big Brother' but I get along better with Linda, Fala and Tavia, who I also collaborated the most with, and have the most fate with. I first met Linda in 2004 when she filmed her first tv series, Virtues of Harmony 2 《皆大歡喜》and at that time she was already playing a couple with me.  In 2007, Fala acted my younger sister in 'Steps' ,  and in 2009 Tavia collaborated with me in Sweetness in the Salt as a couple and we became acquainted.

Admit to be tight-lip and an Attentive Listener
Although we did not formally become god-siblings we do maintain a very good relationship. We chat often and I am more than willing to help them resolve their problems. I admit I am very tight-lip. When they talked to me I would just listen. And if I gave them advice I would just as quickly forget what I said. Once the younger sisters finished venting they would be ok! But if there is stuff they need me to resolve I would do my utmost to help them. I believe it is because of this that they let their guards down with me. My birthday earlier on last year, the three sisters all came to celebrate with me.

I once told them if they were ever bullied by anybody, they must speak up. I won't let anybody bully my three sisters! Although I'm no martial art expert but I can support and help, and would unhesitatingly lend a helping hand, this is my promise to them!

Praises Tavia for having a brotherhood feel
Actually, they all gave out a different feel to me. Tavia is a very independent woman, and among the three sisters has the least problems. I don't need to worry about her. She is a person who upon seeing me from afar would come running over to give me a hug. Personality wise, she is more tomboyish compare to the other two,  at the same time, more mature. Our relationship has a very brotherhood feel. haha! Athough we don't get to see each other often, I am still fond of her.

Fala is like a little girl when with me, and is also a very straightforward person, so much so she may even offend people unknowingly.  I've seen her relationship with reporter was not too good, her way of communicating was also quite odd.. so I as the big brother would advise her. For instance, her tone may not be all that appropriate,  so I would suggest to her to improve on how to express herself. Fortunately, she listened to me. I often remind her to do self-reflection because artists and the media are interrelated like lips and teeth, we should be mutually understanding of each other, and mutually supportive of each other.  In most things, don't be too overly stubborn! Recently, I've noticed Fala's improvement. Last week over the phone, I recounted my experiences to her; other people not necessary would accept your first reaction! Although being smooth and slick entails some fibbing,  which actually I can't accept, but I'll use a different method to handle this: I choose not to speak! That way, I don't have to lie.

Exhort to maintain a pure heart

I have known Linda the longest but she is actually the one I am most worried about. One time, she left a message on my weibo saying that she is a big girl now, but I still worried because Linda is truly too naive, too simple and can be easily bullied.  Working at TVB inside its 'greenhouse' protection, of course she is fine.  But if she works outside TVB then that is tough to say. Back when Linda just entered the industry, we were having lunch together and I exhorted her that learn whatever she wishes to learn but do not learn to become bad, do not do 'unclean' things.  Must maintain a clean and pure heart. Linda has been able to do that. And her acting have improved much, I feel very gratified.

Maybe because I am used to taking care of my real sisters at home, so my words may come across as old fashioned, a bit of a father feel. But I am lucky to have found three sisters that I both respect and care for, and vice verse.

Fala Chen's wish for an Older Brother is half-fulfilled
Fala Chen, whose personality Steven Ma says is straightforward, is full of praises for this god-brother of hers. As the only child, she admitted candidly that she once wanted so much to have an older brother. She laughingly said that her wish is now half fulfilled after coming to Hong Kong and getting to know Steven Ma. "When I acted in 'Steps' I was still a newbie. If he found this leng miu (youngster) lacking in anything...he would mention it, especially on how to conduct myself when handling interpersonal situations. In many situations he taught to be patient and to control my feelings. When faced with a situation, don't run off my mouth at the first instant. That could easily offend other people without even my knowing it. In this field, he has good affinity with people and has experienced much, so of course, I will listen to his opinions, at the same time, grateful to him for teaching me interpersonal skills.  I have also mentioned this older brother to my mother. Previously during Ghost Writer promotion, my mother came to Hong Kong to support me and she got to meet Steven. Even though we did not ceremoniously officiated our honorary sibling-hood but we keep up our relationship really well. We are sincere in our interactions. I know Ah Gor does not care much for ceremony."

4 close brothers
Steven besides having three beautiful god-sisters in the entertainment circle also has three very good brothers: Evergreen Mak, Dexter Young, and Lam King Kong, whom he has been friends for many years and often hang out outside work.  He expresses that their friendship is gradually accumulated over the years, and they are close like family.

"Evergreen and I have a very strong relationship. In 2002, we became acquainted when we filmed TVB 'Where the Legend Begins'. Dexter Young will get married in July (he registered last year) and of course he has invited me to his wedding banquet. During that time, I should be in Beijing filming another mainland China series but no matter what I will definite apply for leave to attend Dexter's wedding banquet, and also be part of bis groomsmen party. As for the other close friend he's Lam King Kong.  Not everybody may know about our friendship but people in the industry often always say "there's not true relationship in showbiz" . I think we have broken this saying. It could be that the people who said this have not encountered a true friend yet or maybe they are unwilling to hand out their heart to communicate with other people. Actually, artists are not necessarily "phonies".

TN: I would rather Steven stop talking about his 3 sisters, constantly. He comes across as a too overly fussy big brother but the truth is he's not their big brother. These 3 fadans are doing just fine in TVB unlike him. So who among them need protection?

 Of his 3 sisters, Fala, Linda, Tavia, only Fala cast her vote for Steven.  I'm not surprised that Tavia supports Raymond Lam cuz she has always said she wants to win tv king and tv queen with him, but I am really surprised that Linda supports Wayne instead of Steven. WTH? In the past Linda has never once outwardly supported Steven for TV king, and now her outward support is again not for Steven but for Wayne whom she has never even worked with.  Well, my image of her took a nosedive.

Today is Steven Ma's birthday but he still need to shoot the wrap-up scene for his series, Prosperous Father. He jests that men at forty is a 'flower', and that his birthday wish is good health.  As to how he celebrated his birthday, he said: "Last night went to an Italian restaurant with Fala Chen, Tavia Yeung and Linda Chung to have dinner. Very seldom do I have Italian for birthday!"  Even though it's his birthday but he still picked up the tab, and spent over thousands of dollars to treat everybody to dinner. When asked if his girlfriend was there too, he laughed and said: "Anyway, there were lots of people, and we cut two birthday cakes."

Narrator: Today TVB's culinary show, Apprentice Chef2, commences filming so naturally its host, Steven Ma, takes it most seriously.  Dressed entirely in white like a Prince Charming , he has especially invited good friend, Tavia Yeung, as his guest.  Not sure if it was pre-planned or that they were like-minded but Steven's and Tavia's looks today are exactly opposites - a stark contrast of one in whole white, the other, whole black - truly a white vs black pairing.

 S: White horse, black sheep. First episode so of course; in my whole new Apprentice Chef 2, I'll invite my good friends for every episode, but basically most of them are females because the chefs are mostly males, the 'yang'  (masculinity) is too strong.  So of course would have to get some pretty women on board. 

T: Too much 'yang'

S: So, for the 1st episode since  the 'yang' is so overpowering, how can you not get hold of a 'yeung' (rhymes with 'sheep' and 'yang' in Cantonese) 

T: True

R: So there're a horse and a sheep. But what dishes would you make?

T: yee, can we take about it?

S: For this episode, together Ah Yee and I will; in every episode I'll learn some cooking skill. In this episode it will test my knife skill. But it's tough to use a knife together. 

T: But I long to marry him so I've decided to cut myself  because he has said that if I cut my   hand he will marry me. 

S: you..you. you.. Are you currently singer? 

T: Single, single, single. 

R: Single for today only

S: Single or double?

T: Today very single, no double. 

Steven and Tavia laugh and jest freely, guess they are not worried at all about having to cook later.  Talking about cooking Steven says he has much reservation over Tavia's cooking skill but he highly praises Tavia's mother's cooking skill. 

S: Becasue we have collaborated in many series already. One time Ah Yee brought in this big bag of local cakes* made by her mother to share with co-workers. When I ate them I thought they were delicious.  And then the 2nd time, I found out her mother made some more to be shared with co-workers. Auntie especially made a big bag of the cakes for me. 

T: Yes,

S: Only for me.  Like about 10 to 20 

R: like a son-in-law

S: At that time I thought of that too.

S: I thought, yeeee, perhaps auntie wants me as son-in-law?

T: Tonight I really have to bleed?

'e85s%r u  on.cc  Though sick, Tavia Yeung still attended the recording of Apprentice Chef hosted by Steven Ma.  She expressed that she was endangering her life because she was having acute gastritis, and joked that she might suddenly vomit from eating.  And Steven who was beside her praised Tavia for being a bosom friend and joked that if anything bad happened to her, he would marry her then.  Their ensuing bantering was quite "loving".

Tavia's mysterious person turned out to be Alex Fong who picked up the tab for her group. Guess the mysterious person(s) were not Fala and Steven as her posters thought, wonder why Tavia mentioned Sharon and Alex but did not deign to mention  Steven and Fala in the encounter?
