Link to temptations: critiques

At this point, I'm utterly disappointed at Steven's character in Links. I'm disappointed at how shallow the scriptwriter makes this character is. If I can understand how Steven's fans feel unhappy that Nip Ji Yuen had so little screentime in Salt, and had to share Sing Suet's heart with someone else, or how Chi Yat Bo was being cruelly played by fate all the while, at least those two characters had more depth, more significance than just being the protective hero of the heroin. At least Nip Ji Yuen has flesh and blood, who was not only caught in the dilemma of love, but also his filial and bond with his godfather, his conflicting value with his mother, and his persistence in justice. And while Chi Yat Bo dedicated his time, effort and heart for the clueless-in-love Twinkle, at least we get to see his concerns for his own father, his aunt. Chi Yat Bo, even though sacrificial for Twinkle, has his own existence value. He is a kind man all around, he is an observant man all around. Both Nip Ji Yuen and Chi Yat Bo, besides being hopeless romantic, has much more depth and values to look up to. But Steven's character in Links? Besides can't recall his name in the series, because his name is so hardly mentioned besides being called "barrister" or "good man", I find that his existence almost has no value besides being a pursuer for Jojo (Fala's character). Even Kenny Wong's and Timmy Hung's characters have more depth than him.

I find Steven's character in Links very shallow because first, he fell in love with Fala because of her look. There is nothing that was shown by her to him that would have given him any clue or any faith that she is pure at heart. Yet, he insisted that she is pure at heart just because he 'miraculously' or 'one-sidedly' hopes that she is indeed someone that he hopes her to be. At one time, he falls in love knowing her profession, and at the other time, he minds her profession. At one time, he doesn't like working for rich men, and another time, he wants to work for rich man for a girl that he doesn't even know for a long time and treated him like dirt, no matter whether inside she feels more for him. The thing is, what Jojo is really inside, there is nothing that would make audience see how Steven's character would have so much faith in her or loyally waited for her, besides her physical appearance. It makes his character look cheap rather than loyal/romantic. I'm so sorry, I love Steven a lot, but this character is probably the most shallow one I have come across of him. I'm sad to see that Steven has to play this male counterpart of damsel in distress. His character had no value other than following Fala's character around and be her love interest.

Agree with everything you said above. Steven fans and myself are extremely upset and disappointed with Steven's Wilson characterization and its insignificance in the whole storyline. Baidu tvb, baidu Links and Baidu Steven Ma sites are all peppered with sprouting threads complaining about the Wilson's shallowness and the bad script, and how Wilson is just there to prop up and promote Fala. Like you said, limited screentime can be compensated by an interesting persona, which is not the case here because obviously Wilson exists to be belittled by Jojo because he is just hua ci male. Having watched 9 episodes so far, I've lost interest in this series completely, not sure if I want to continue watching the rest of the series or not, and that's coming from a loyal steven ma fan, and sad to say, I'm not the only one turned off by the script and Mala's characterization, many Steven's fans are also debating whether to watch or to give up watching altogether.

We all know that Links is produced to promote Fala but I didn't imagine it would be to sacrifice Steven to make Fala look good -- not that it did. Overall, the whole series production smacks of neglect, of inferior quality, and of post production shabbiness and laziness starting with its themesong, its choice of sub-themesong and background music........etc. A throwaway cum filler series if ever there is one --- And to think this is the first series Steven did right after he renewed his contract... did he not have a choice to reject this dud of a role? Made me upset just to think about how bad Wilson's role is. Fala's character is not very engaging at all either. So totally turned off by Wilson's shallowness and annoying persistence, preachiness and the contradiction in his characterization.

There is this recent reported review on Links, and for once I actually concur with what the writer wrote. "The male lead in Links is just a passerby "buying soya sauce*" whose screen time is so minimal that it cannot be anymore less than what he is having right now. So as a male lead, exactly where is his status in this series? Conversely, Lau Dan, with his ample screen time and the significance of his role should be dubbed the male lead instead.

*baidu lingo for an unconcerned/insgificant person just passing through

Nikki01 Just drop a note to say that I fully agree with Tamaya and Akazukin's comments about Steven's role and character in Link that is totalling disappointing up to episode 9. If not for Steven, I would have stopped watching. The storyline is not appealing and as you said, there is really nothing in Jojo's character and belittling treatment of Wilson that can make any sense for Steven to continue on his blind belief of the goodness of Jojo. The few other supporting male actors are in fact getting better write ups in their characters than Steven's. He is just a 'vase' for the 'flower(s)' in this series and not what we fans want.
