Links: Wilson

reposted from AF#1049

Tamaya: If tvb hoped to promote Fala in Links then the series is not doing a good job of it. Jojo brings me back to Fala's past roles in Steps and AJCL of a materialistic and money grabbing woman using her good looks and sexiness to advance herself financially. I was super annoyed by her character in Steps but I could relate to her AJCL character and even sympathize with her. At the time though still raw, I thought she had acting potential, but sorry to sad, I'm not all that impressed with her performance in this series, especially annoyed by her overused haughty demeanor and her crying skill needs polishing. Thank goodness for her Tsui Chui. Didn't enjoy her role in CBML either. And never finished watching MR, so don't know.

I get series that I grew to dislike my favourite artiste in that series.
Tamaya: I don't find Wilson's devotion towards Jojo revolting, more like incomprehensible, because Jojo is shown in an unflattering light to the audience, with no redeeming qualities. What's there to commend Jojo except for her beauty. What are her good qualities that made Wilson go gaga over her? The script did not even bother to show any sweet scenes of them dating and enjoying each other company. This kind of relationship greatly reminds me of Twinkle's equally incomprehensible 'love' for Goon Sin.

Don't think I could ever dislike Steven no matter how bad his character is, not that I think Wilson is revolting or despicable, only incomprehensibly and blindly besotted by a beautiful face. Moreover, he has many redeeming qualities unlike Jojo, whose I've yet to find. But I gotta say, I like Wilson better in the latter episodes than the earlier ones so much so, I personally wouldn't mind having a man like Wilson as bf or husband. Actually, though I disapprove of Wilson's choice, I'm moved by his unconditional love for Jojo, he sees her faults completely (not in the beginning but latter in the series) but he loves her despite them. He has thought long and hard, and concludes that she is indeed innocent, and since she is innocent he must unfalteringly prove it for her at all cost; and if she is convicted then he will stand by her through the years. This is Wilson's love philosophy, plus the fact that he trusts his gut instinct that she is a good person. Don't ask why he loves her so, it is inconsequential, what's important is that to him, life is better with her than life without her, so he goes all out in pursuit of his happiness with her. I admire Wilson for this show of decisiveness and go-getter determination spirit, no more being indecisive and vacillating. Two clean choices: cut loose and turn tail, letting the woman you love down. Or: believe in her innocence and assist to prove it. Good or bad decision, he is his own man. Either one of his choices will change his future and happiness. He chooses the one that has a modicum of a chance to secure a happy future for him as he knows he will be unhappy for sure should he not help Jojo to prove her innocence. His mind is so made up..he is a man who knows what he wants for himself. Be his decision good or bad, stupid or not, it is admirable enough he fights for his happiness and to assist the woman he loves. Nobody knows the future but Wilson is determined to have a hand in shaping the future to his vision..he could say he've tried his best.

I believe Wilson's unconditional love saves Jojo from destroying herself, if not from the law. I genuinely believe that true love can change a person for the better, even saved her/him from self-destruction but of course, in the end, the person herself/himself must take responsibility for her/his own life and happiness. Wilson is doing just that. I wonder if Mad Sir has trusted Stone to be innocent would the tragic ending be averted. True, Wilson gets the short stick in the relationship, but love cannot not be measured with a yardstick. Wilson goes in pursuit of his happiness and ultimately wins, whereas had he given up on Jojo at the time she most needed him, he will for sure live with a niggling guilt and lingering regrets for the rest of his life, therefore absolute happiness will elude him thereafter, because that's just him, Wilson. Nobody can live his life for him. Wilson is a man who takes responsibility for his actions. He knows he was in the wrong abetting Jojo so he willing face up his punishment without excuses for his actions. To him, a future without being able to practice court laws is less painful that a future without Jojo. Love is blind, even stupid, but it is essential for happiness. Just depends how much one is willing to sacrifice for it and if the sacrifices are worth it, according to the person involved not to outsiders. To Wilson, it is worth it, moreover, it has paid off for him.

But yeah, the ending when Jojo leaves Wilson because she is so disgusted with herself is truly cheesy. How long their relationship will last, who knows. But I believe this relationship will make Jojo a better person, and Wilson the happiest man in the world when credits roll.

P.S. posted this before I read Steven's weibo entry:
He says that if he truly loves a woman that much, he would behave like Wilson, except he would have acted much more decisively earlier to prevent all the bad things from happening.

Akazukin:
I'm not disagreeing with Wilson's philosophy to love. But I think whether actions are justified depends on the cause behind it. In this case, the cause of Wilson's love for Jojo is just because of her beauty. Inevitably, I find his cause so shallow that all the devotion he gave to the love go down the drain and made it revolting for me to watch.

Wilson would have made a good husband, except that I can't respect/admire him as a 'person' to even consider as a husband. Not only that but a good husband doesn't just mean someone who treated his wife like a god. A good husband will be able to treat the people around him well. I would prefer someone like Sheung Chi. Wilson was so obsessed by Jojo that he doesn't have to consider his parents' feelings. Of course, the scriptwriter decides to make his parents so open-minded and godly about accepting Jojo. But in the real society, how many parents will accept daughter-in-law like Jojo with real happy hearts given their background? Even if they accept her, they would have accepted her in silent tears. Life is not just between two people. Marriage is not just between two people either (at least I believe marriage is between two families).

I think they did show the scenes of them dating, like cooking together in the kitchen, etc. I just don't find those scenes happy or exceptionally engraving in heart. Nor did I find Wilson's start of obsession of Jojo believable either. I don't think Twinkle's 'love' for Goon Sing is equally incomprehensible. To start with, Goon Sing was someone she admired because of his talents. And then, they pretty much went through a lot together, including the life and death + romantic moment in Germany. Even so, when Goon Sing behaved unreasonably, Twinkle reprimanded him and sided with Chi Yat Bo even though she didn't totally give up on him. But she didn't go to Goon Sing to beg for them to reconcile like Wilson did. Moreover, what Goon Sing did was nothing as creepy as what Jojo has done.

Links is not a good series to promote Fala at all. I actually liked Fala in Steps. Even though her character is someone problematic, but I thought she had potential at that time. And she was just acting how her character was supposed to be. But in Links, they are trying to portray Jojo as a gold-digger outside gold-heart inside with a lot of redeeming points because she was forced to do the bad things. The character is a complex one and I think Fala failed to pull it off. I also dislike how she had to show Wilson her pissed face most of the time in the first half of the series without the need to. Anyway, I haven't been very impressed with Fala's three recent characters/performances, in CBML, NR, and Links. I think her best performances were GW and MR.
