I guess to Steven, his agreeing to participate in Guangdong Satellite TV《技行天下》is more than just monetary gain and exposure to mainland tv viewers, it was more of him getting the pulse of ordinary people (mainland) and connecting with them on a personal level. Even way back when, Steven reached out to ordinary people thru his books, social/charity works and culinary show, and getting much satisfaction from getting to know them.
Steven, together with a colleague and a social worker, had pounded the streets, ‘accosted’ late night young loiterers, and chatted with juveniles placed on probation; their encounters were later compiled and narrated into that very book. [..]But immersed as he is in an entertainment work environment, Steven often feels stifled by showbiz lifestyle of extravagance and dissipation, which can inevitably promote a detachment from real society. All fine and dandy, now can he please get back to filming a tv series or more for his forbearing fans? I miss seeing my most favorite leading man in action on screen. Sorry but《技行天下》just doesn't cut it for me. Of the 6 episodes, I've only watched 4-- guess which 4.
I couldn't bring myself to watch beyond the first episode, cos I really can't stand little gold fish, especially her dropped jaw expression! So I'm planning to watch only the last episode now. For the rest of the episodes, I'll just look at the screenshots and photos on weibo.

From the very 1st episode I was already turned off by Little Gold Fish's hyperbole, "mai meng", ham-it-up put-on drop-jaw facial expressions and OTT body gestures - all contrived and faked up for the camera. I cringed when in episode 1, LGF unabashedly asked that middle-age fashion designed to guess her figure vital statistics. That was so awkward. lol! But gotten say I'm very impressed by her command of the Chinese language. As for Steven, though less than LGF, he did quite a bit of ham-it-up acting for the camera, too.
