3/28 Variety Show Garnered high ratings, Steven Ma buys Champagne as reward.s>‑@‑#9psm  Special

Steven is very happy because stepping into the year of Rabbit, his work continues incessantly.  Besides hosting the high rated “Book of Words”, numerous Mainland advertising sponsors also queued up to invite him to shoot commercials for them.  No wonder he is so ebullient.  Earlier, he drove his newly purchased HK$500K 7-seater van to Happy Valley to purchase dessert soup (tong sui) and champagne.  When he saw this reporter, he kept his cheerfulness.  When asked why he had take out?  “I’m meeting up with Ken gor (Kent Cheng) tonight so bought some dessert soup and champagne as gifts to show respect.”  Upon saying that, he bid this reporter goodbye and drove away in his van.

Steven expressed that last year he had 4 series aired one after another (tn: AWT, Stupid Cupid, GW, LTT) which increased his exposure, consequently his stage performance and advertisement jobs were unceasing. He said candidly that his outside income pleased him.   So of course he used the excess disposable income to reward himself.   But Steven did not go for the head turning kind of vehicle instead he got a van.  He said: "I had always wanted to buy one lo."

That  night, Steven drove to Happy Valley, after parking his new van, he stepped into a dessert place to buy dessert soup.  This reporter saw him chatting amiably with the employee, seemingly in good mood.  Holding two big bags of dessert soup, he walked to the nearby Wine Cellar.  After making a round inside the store, he pointed at a bottle Dom Perignon Vintage 2002 champagne, and without hesitation charged it to his credit card for a hefty sum of $1,228.

Even though laden with goodies,  Steven still walked briskly, while chatting  with this reporter; he was so very nice.

Despite the champagne's hefty price of  $1,228, Steven charged it to his credit card unhesitatingly;
obviously he is very prosperous.

Steven has always said that he is very grateful to Kent for his guidance.
Kent is both his teacher and friend.

Book of words hosted by Steven garnered high ratings.

*tn1: Steven said he bought the gifts for Ken Gor, not to reward himself.  This reporter put words in Steven's mouth.

tn2:  Dom Perignon is the most expensive brand of champagne.  Steven sure knows his wine.

Book of Words ratings for 1st day: 21 points  but on 2nd and 3rd day dropped to 19 points, obviously the latter ratings were affected by news of Japan's earthquake and radiation catastrophe.

lol!  Bosco just bought a flamboyant audi fire-engine-red sportscar (per news report), and here's Steven going for an unglamorous, neutral color  7-seater family van.

Charmaine Sheh Si Man was rumored to leave TVB and focus on money-earning opportunities in China . Bowie Lam and Joe Ma Tak Chungwill be heading to mainland as well. With few big stars left, TVB was forced to increase wages and please their remaining artists, such as Bosco Wong Chung Chak and Steven Ma Chun Wai. This included casting Bosco in a new Shaw Brothers’ movie and airing Steven’s new series in the latter half of the year, paving his road towards winning the TVB Best Actor Award this year.

There is a great demand for artists in the mainland film and television industries. Many mainland companies were actively recruiting Hong Kong artists and willing to pay high salaries. Many artists were interested in filming for mainland. Once dominating the industry, TVB now has to pull out various incentives to make their artists stay with the company.

TVB Eager to Make Steven Ma Stay
TVB regularly invited artists to dinners. In the past, Steven Ma was rumored to not get along with TVB executive, Viriginia Lok. However, at a recent dinner, Ms. Lok sat next to Steven and frequently chatted and joked with him. The atmosphere was harmonious. With Steven’s contract ending this year, TVB was eager to retain him.

An inside source at TVB revealed, “Steven often filmed ancient dramas and was very suitable for the mainland market. With mainland companies paying such high filming fees, TVB was afraid to [drag its relationship with Steven like before]. Aside from producing a new culinary program Apprentice Chef <大廚出馬 2> featuring Steven, TVB will be airing Thunder of the Forbidden Palace <紫禁驚雷> in September, which will pave the road for the TVB Best Actor Award. Anyway, TVB was using every possible means to make Steven stay.”

Ma Zai and Virginia Lok Pretend to be Friends.

Apple Daily 2011/03/16
Ma Zai and Virginia Lok Pretend to be Friends. (Gulp!)

The night before, TVB Deputy Executive Chairman, Norman Leung, had dinner at Shark's Seafood Restaurant in Causeway Bay with a group of artistes including Steven Ma, Evergreen Mak, Kiki Sheung, Mag Lam, Alfred Hui, Maggie Siu, Paul Chin, Krystal Tin, Christine Kuo and TVB executives, Lam Bo On and Virginia Lok.

Recently there have been rumors of Charmaine Sheh, Joe Ma and Bowie Lam and other siu fas and siu sangs leaving the nest as soon as their contracts expired. On that night, when this reporter queried Lok if the dinner was set up to appease hearts, she  laughed and said: "This is a very leading question. First, not everyone left; second, I,representing the company, was never scared."

Ms. Virginia Lok's dinner invitation

video: news broadcast of the dinner

Actually, TVB artistes being invited to partake a meal with Ms. Lok is no big deal and quite common too, if they are her favorites, that is, but in all those years as a managed contract artiste, Steven was never once reported being invited to one of her lunches or dinners or birthday parties, at all. But check out the news below (though Steven's name was mentioned only in passing), how telling was it of the dire exodus of TVB artistes from the nest? Steven still has some two years left in his contract, would he stay or leave? But on second thoughts, maybe it wasn't Lok who invited Steven, maybe it was Norman Leung who invited him.

Translation of article: TVB executives, Virginia Lok and Norman Leung, had a dinner (lunch) gathering with a group of artistes including: Crystal Tin, Kiki Sheung, Maggie Siu, Paul Chin and Steven Ma etc (not mentioned - Evergreen) Crystal laughingly said the meal was to celebrate her birthday, but Kik interjected that they all gathered here to belatedly celebrate her wedding. (Even they seemed amused by their invitation to eat with the top executives.) Mr. Leung expressed that it is not unusual for the company to occasionally have lunch/dinner gathering with the artistes. (TN: just not this group of people) As to the recent rumors of many artistes leaving TVB and flocking to the north to pursue real money, Lok clarified: "First, not every one is leaving; they're not all gone! Second, I, representing the company, am not scared at all!"

From weibo concerning the above news report:
fans: Guess the exodus of tvb artistes is really serious. See, even Steven had a chance to attend her lunch/dinner.
fan: Wow! 4th brother had a meal with Lok! Incredible!
fan1: That Steven was in Lok's dinner is a miracle!
fan2: I thought so too.
fan3: 4th Brother, go follow Princess Cheung Ping to the north
fan4: Seems like Lok is under great pressure.

And many more voicing the same train of thought.

So, why was the dinner even reported as news if it was not a publicity stunt for tvb?

Note: Mark Lee was also present but not mentioned in the news.

Macao News praises Steven Ma

3/11 Macao Daily News
Steven Ma, suitable as the good and the bad. Steven has been in TVB for over a decade now, and has filmed many popular tv series including as the handsome Wilson, and the super thief, Yik Jo On, all portrayed verisimilarly.   Ma Zai has many years of acting experience so his good acting skill is unquestionable; he only lacks the good luck and fate with awards.  But this writer believes that if he continues to work hard, he will one day break through to carve out a piece of sky for himself.

TN: Count me in as a believer in Steven's ability as a brilliant actor.  But to me, Steven has already breakthrough with his own piece of sky.  Just lacking the top cherry (award) to embellish his sky.

In the past, I knew even before reading Macao Daily News report on Steven, it would be written in a negative slant, regardless.  Just like how haters will remain haters regardless of what Steven did or did not do. But recently, the tone of its news reports has become a mix of the positive interspersed with the negative.  Now it has actually slanted more towards positive.  Something to celebrate.  But then again who knows what news tomorrow will bring.  So just take every news reports with a grain of salt.

Foot Infection

source: on.cc; steven-ma.org weibo

Steven Ma’s leg has been hurting him for quite sometime now. Yesterday he weibo that his swollen leg was so painful he had to see the doctor late at night. Only then did he discover that the wound he got from playing badminton previously had become infected. The doctor worried that the infection might have been caused by flesh eating bacteria so had Steven hospitalized for observation. Fortunately, the lab report verifies that his wound is not serious. Steven wrote: “The report verifies that the wound is just an ordinary wound infection. It is much better now, but the doctor had me remained in the hospital to do a chest examination because he thought I may have apnea. “

TN: Apnea: Everyone has brief pauses in their breathing pattern called apnea. Usually these brief stops are completely normal.  Sometimes, though, apnea can cause a prolonged pause in breathing, making the breathing pattern irregular. Someone with apnea might actually stop breathing for short amounts of time, decreasing oxygen levels in the body and disrupting sleep.
