Many mainland tv viewers first knew of Steven Ma through this 16-year-old tv series, Duke of Mt. Deer, and later through tvb series got to know him. The winter break is fast approaching, and soon it's the time to once again see “Xiao Xuan Zi” (tn: Steven’s KangXi) on tv reruns.*   As for the real person Steven Ma himself, he is presently here in Beijing to formally open his  “Zhong-Xiang TaoYuan Steven Ma Work Studio”. In 2013 he had a fruitful year up north; in 2014 he plans to branch out his career in different directions; besides filming, music, and book publication, he will also get involve in directing, planning, artists management, and may even do some side business; thus, “Kang Xi” may soon become “Boss  Ma” (lao ban). In this Tencent interview Steven speaks eloquently of his future plans, his fluent Mandarin spoken with hardly any Hong Kong accent will definitely be advantageous to his ventures up north.

Steven Ma toning up in preparation for an upcoming movie

Yesterday, Steven Ma, as the invited guest, did a recording for a TVB Chinese New Year show, 家家行運菜,co-hosted by Evergreen Mak, Grace Wong, and Ng Yip Kwan (吳業坤).  Since Steven and Evergreen are good brothers, Steven would of course support a show hosted by the latter. Appearance wise, Steven clearly looks more built than before.  Apparently after Chinese New Year sometime in March he will film a mainland romantic movie that has some revealing scenes, hence, he has been diligently working out for the past two months to tone up his body.

Steven asserts: "It’s a healthy kind of flesh baring, nothing x-rated, so don’t think crooked.  Some love scenes may require taking off shirt.  Earlier I looked at myself in the mirror and thought I looked absolutely like a dried person, and that will look bad on screen; what’s more, the leading lady may even look bigger size than me, so I started working out two months ago, and the result is starting to show, but no need to have to look like Nick Cheung though.” (Will you get a tan?) “Not for now.” Steven said that besides working out every three days per week, he has also eliminated oil from his food, so now his diet consists only of blanched and boiled food, and thus he's currently living a ‘tasteless’ lifestyle.  Steven hopes to be able to meet the abs he never has.

Last year, with Tao Yuan Company’s investment, Steven established his work studio in Beijing. He is presently preparing his directorial debut: “The studio's main focus is for me to direct my own movies.  The script is being prepared right now.  Later in the year I will direct this one movie in Hong Kong that the company has invested in.” (As both director and actor?) “No, just director.” The investment on him from the company and various businessmen proves his ability to attract gold; Steven said laughingly he hopes he won’t lose money for them.

TN: So, gathering from these news reports, Steven will first (direct too?) and act in the company's invested romantic mainland movie in March(right after CNY) whereby his character may have shirtless scenes. In mid year, he will direct a movie (probably on his mother) filmed in Hong Kong.

Previous showing of skin on screen -- the swimming pool scene in The Brink of Law, and some brief shots in 7 Days in Life; that scene of his character checking out his flab in the mirror in Steps does not count since that is not his body but of someone else' ps to his head by the computer.

Soon after 2014 New Year's day (sic Jan 5th), Steven Ma flew over to Beijing to take care of business for his mainland work studio there.  Year end 2013, (sic registration in effect 1/1/2014) Steven formally established his Zhong-Xiang TaoYuan Steven Ma Work Studio in mainland to develop his music, film and television works there. The purpose of his Beijing trip is to meet with his staff to set up a work plan for the year and to make arrangements for these plans, as well as to pronounce the official opening of his studio for business.

Zhong-Kang TaoYuan Company Chairman, Mr. Huang Hong, expresses: "Our company and Mr. Steven Ma shared a common goal, which is to develop and broaden Steven's music, film and television works. To lay the foundation for Steven to reach his next peak in his artistic career, Zhong-Xiang Tao Yuan Company will go all out to support all his job contracts in mainland, and will also comprehensively and meticulously manage his artistic career in mainland."

As soson as he arrived in Beijing Steven immediately held a staff meeting. During the meeting, Steven not only laid down the rules for his studio operations but also discussed the future development plans for the year. For this trip, Steven also brought along some of his staff members from his Hong Kong Siu Ma (Little Ma) Work Studio to participate in the meeting discussions. Steven expresses:  "The feel of us all sitting down to discuss the details seems more like a family meeting, and so in a congenial atmosphere we set our business plans and ways to implement them."

Allegedly, the first task of Steven's mainland studio this year is to prepare the promo and release of his all new Mandarin music album (tn: Cherish 2) in mainland.  Furthermore, Steven will personally direct the mvs of his new album. Soon after Valentine's Day, Steven's new TVB series, Storm in a Cocoon, will be aired on HK tv, at which time Steven will attend the 1st promo event of the series which will be held in mainland.
