2003 music mv features maggie cheung

June 28, 2003
Alex Fong, Maggie Cheung, Julian Cheung and Steven Ma had earlier taken part in making some promotional films for the Red Cross to encourage people to give blood and yesterday there was a premiere for these clips. A regular blood donor, Julian cheung was happy to give blood there and then to show his support. However, the usually masculine Alex Fong is actually very scared of blood and not to mention giving blood, even watching Julian give his donation made him rather nervous and scared, causing some amusement.

Alex was asked whether he would be supporting the rallies taking place on July 1st against the legislation of "Article 23". He says he will not be going as he does not support them, but he is not against protest. He says that he is not against legislation because he feels that every country needs to have its own security measures and Hong Kong has great freedom compared to some countries already. He thinks that so many people are against legislation in Hong Kong because this may be someone's plan and maybe it is this fear that we should be worrying about. As for Eric Tsang's appeals to protesters for calm, Alex agrees: "There are many professional protesters there who are trying to create an image for themselves through protesting and when I see these people I feel very opposed to them."

Also Steven Ma will soon be making a music video and inviting his old friend Maggie Cheung to be his female lead. Steven says that 80% of the production costs will be on Maggie's costume. When asked how much he will be paying Maggie, he laughs: "I haven't thought about paying her, but I will give her the costumes and accessories she uses in the filming," Steven also says that Maggie should be paying him instead because this time it is his first time directing. Steven didn't give blood either because he is on medication for digestion problems.

2003 Anti-drugs Ambassador

Steven's news on June 26th, 2003
Yesterday was the International Anti-drugs day and the Anti-drugs Ambassador Steven Ma took part in a press conference. He was very touched when he heard the stories of two young people's experiences with their drug addictions and how it affected their lives.

Steven said: "When I was a child, I lived in Sham Shui Po and often saw the drug addicts taking drugs in the back staircases and leaving syringes everywhere. At the time, I was very frightened that these people would intrude on neighbours to get money to feed their habit and with time, my fear turned to hatred."

Steven says that drugs shouldn't be classed into soft or hard, those who abuse their use is not loving their own bodies. He proudly emphasizes: "Even though I grew up in that environment, you don't see me taking drugs!"

Steven Ma: I Am Like a Goalkeeper, Stabilized the Ratings.
Because of his having an “ancient costumes” face, Steven Ma is the actor among the TVB artistes who has acted the most times in ancient costumes series. In yet another ancient costumes series, the presently airing Ghost Writer at 8:30 pm, he portrays a renowned Qing author, Pu Song Ling. Since the series airs during the World Cup broadcast, he shoulders the heavy burden of grabbing ratings. Steven says he has already accomplished the mission given him by TVB. Ghost Writer’s average ratings have been within the proximity of the 30 points mark. “And this was under the circumstance of having an ongoing soccer match at 7:30 pm every night. Moreover, prior to this, the average ratings for ‘Fly with Me’, Sisters of Pearl’, were around 26 points.” As to the viewers criticizing that his Ghost Writer seems more like a family affair series, Steven counters: “This is not a biographic documentary; it is just a tv series for people to pass time, if it pleases the viewers, then that’s all to it.”

Discuss Roles
"I Resemble the Qing portrait of Pu Song Ling.”

R: Before portraying Pu Song Ling, what kind of preparations did you do?

S: Prior to this, I didn’t know too much about Pu Song Ling, the person. Three months before production, I bought many books relating to Pu Song Ling. Also, I re-watched some of the movies relating to Liao Zhai 《聊斋》. Producer Leung Choi Yuen even got hold of a Pu Song Ling’s biography as well as some pundits’ comments on it for me to read, which helped me greatly. Furthermore, they also showed me the portrait of Pu Song Ling.

R: Reportedly, some people commented that you resemble Pu Song Ling?

S: (smile) Oftentimes, there are fans who will show me some images of Qing personalities, say I resemble so and so Qing person, and that I should portray him. The portraits during the Qing Dynasty all have people with small, single-lidded eyes, a straight nose, and a long face. As such, don’t they all look like me? When I saw Pu Song Ling’s portrait, I thought so too.

R: Was it for this reason that the producer cast you as Pu Song Ling?

S: I’m not sure; it might be part of the consideration. I’m the actor who has acted the most times in TVB ancient costumes series; whether it is Tang Dynasty, Ming Dynasty, or Qing Dynasty, I basically acted them all. I have this “retro face”, so maybe when there is an ancient costumes series in the work, the producer will think of me. I quite enjoy shooting an ancient costumes series. To have such a good opportunity to portray an extraordinary historical figure gives me great satisfaction.

Discuss Controversy
"This is only a tv series, a diversion for people to pass time.

R: Was this the first time you portrayed a much older persona?

S: Maybe you all have some misunderstanding. This series depicts the life experiences of Pu Song Ling between the ages of 20 to around 35 years old. It is only in the latter segment of the last episode that I appear as a 60 something year-old persona. At that time, Pu Song Ling has secluded himself in his mountain retreat to write “Ghost Stories”.《聊斋志异》 Old Ling’s scenes are not that many, and not all that difficult to do.

R: Some viewers questioned that this series does not seem like Pu Song Ling’s biography, more like a series on family & ethical issues. What do you think?

S: The series is only halfway through; still too early to pass verdict. But I must concede that this series is not a historical documentary faithful to the legendary figure. The writing mainly focuses on the period before Pu Song Ling wrote “Ghost Stories”; to narrate why he wrote “Ghost Stories”; and to showcase the personality of Pu Song Ling. Pu Song Ling did not enjoy success as a young man, he was nearly 70 years old before obtaining scholarly honor; we all know this much. But towards his everyday life, we draw a near blank. So towards this end, the scriptwriters concentrated their effort, and within the tv series constraints came up with some details to enrich this character, Pu Song Ling. This is not a documentary; it’s only a tv series, a diversion for people to pass time.

R: The main reason why Pu Song Ling wrote “Ghost Stories” is to allegorize the society of that time. But in the series, Pu Song Ling actually has a human-fox spirit triangle relationship; do you think that set up is appropriate?

S: Will use my prior answer for that. We are only shooting a tv series. Fala Chen portrays a fox spirit who when young is rescued by Pu Song Ling’s father. When grown up, she wants to repay him for his kind deed. And so comes up with all kinds of ways to be by Pu Song Ling’s side. But at the time, Pu Song Ling is already married to Linda Chung’s character, Lau Sum Yu….in the latter part, Sunny Chan’s character, Detective Gou Jit, because of his jealousy over Pu Song Ling capturing Lau Sum Yu’s heart, even uses little fox to set Pu up; did a lot of evil things---- just like how it is in “Ghost Stories”; demons are not necessarily more evil than human beings.

R: Some viewers said that the script is similar to Director Chen Jia’s ‘Painted Skin’.

S: There’s a bit of that feeling in it, in that a man while in love with a woman also at the same time falls in love with a fox spirit. I’ve watched ‘Painted Skin’, like it a lot. I guess TVB scriptwriters might have used it as a reference. But I feel that whether it is ‘Painted Skin’ or ‘Pu Song Ling’, they all have used ‘Ghost Stories’ as a reference. Twenty odd years ago, TVB has already produced a ‘Painted Skin’ story; it also depicts a human and fox spirit story. I feel that what we are doing now is not a problem.
(translator’s note: question tactfully answered.)

R: How do you evaluate both Linda Chung and Fala Chen?

S: They are both my good younger sisters; both call me big brother. Linda is more of an introvert. She gives this feeling that she is like this Chang Jin character in the Korean’s series, Jewel in the Palace. Looks like she can be easily bullied, makes one wants to protect her. As for Fala, she is a very lively young lady, and more straightforward in her speech. Their personalities are actually demonstrated through their acting techniques. For instance, Linda’s acting is very ‘restrained’ (演戏很”收”); while Fala’s more open and free, whether being sad, or angry, all performed 'extravagantly'. If they can integrate as one, the result will be all that more better.

Discuss Ratings
“Going Against World Cup, We Must Not Lose.”

R: This time TVB pitted ‘Ghost Writer’ against World Cup in the same time slot, are you worried about its ratings?

S: I’m already used to it. Whether it is World Cup, or long holidays; my series will be put up against it. Just like last year, A Watchdog’s Tale was broadcasted during the Christmas time slot all the way to New Year’s Eve timeslot. People were on break. Also in year 2002, ‘Where the Legend Begins’ was also aired against World Cup. But luckily, AWT’s average rating is at 31 points, so far ranking 2nd in this year tv series ratings. As for the presently airing Ghost Writer, last week it peaked at 31 points, averaging 28 points, and this was under the circumstances of having an ongoing soccer match at 7:30 pm every night; so the results are not too bad, considering. Look at the prior series: Fly with Me, Sisters of Pearl; their averages are around 26 points. I’m like the goalkeeper in a soccer match, did not let down the company or the audience, have stabilized the ratings. Xiao Ma did the best he could!

R: Because you are TVB’s General Luck, so use your work to pit against World Cup?

S: The producer did give me a heads-up on its time slot because they (sic) were worried that I would be unhappy. But I wouldn't, so long they genuinely have confidence in me. These past few days, there was no broadcast of 7:30 pm World Cup matches; hence, our ratings inflated to 33 points. I believe the results will get better and better. All of us had given a lot to this series. The viewers should be able to see our efforts. Going against World Cup, we must not lose.

R: Talking about giving, heard that you almost lost your sight?

S: At that time, I was doing a lying down on the bed scene. Right above my head hung a candle lamp. Maybe because the filming was too protracted, the candle melted into wax, which tipped over the candle holder. All the melted wax plopped onto my right eye. Luckily at that time, my eyes were closed. I only felt the heat on my eyeball. But my eyelid was completely sealed shut by the wax. Later, someone used a toothpick to slowly clear off the wax. The eye was fine, but it was truly alarming.

(translator's note: must be the scene in episode 14 when PSL's spirit sees his body lying on the bed underneath the flames of life.)

2003 Better Halves promo

Tuesday, June 24, 2003
TVB's new show "Gam Pai Bing Yan" (Better Halves) will be follow "Hak Ye Choi Hung" (Fate Twisters) and begin airing next week. Yesterday, Steven Ma, Maggie Cheung, Moses Chan, Joyce Coi and Cerina de Graca were among those at a promotional event. Although Maggie was wearing her ancient costume, she was still the centre of attraction after her recent figure changing news and when Steven picked her up to play games, Chuk Man Kwan took the opportunity to ask Steven: "Is Maggie's front poking into you?" and making them both a little embarrassed. As well as this, Maggie accidentally hurt her hand whilst playing games, but luckily she and Steven still won and took home the prize of some cakes.

Later, Steven said: "I think Maggie is getting more and more fit, so when I was carrying her, she felt really light. She has already agreed to be the guest star in my new music video for 'Talk of Me' and my concept is for me to be a mortal and for her to be a little angel." When Maggie was asked whether a sexy angel would have no clothes on, she laughs: "If he's willing, I don't mind, but it won't be allowed to be broadcast and to have it squared out would be a waste of time! Moreover, sexiness should be shown through innocence and a clean image."

Maggie is still not used to having everyone's attention on her, especially Steven smiling at her coyly and imitating her sexy poses for the camera. Talking of her guest starring as a sexy angel in Steven's MV, she says: "The degree of sexiness is still unknown, and I don't know how sexy and angel came to be strung together, I don't think it will be dangling from wires in a swimsuit! If I wear a swimsuit, then it will go past normal friendship and the rumours will start again about our relationship. Overall, I have no bottom line, I can be sexy, but not overly revealing, sexiness can be achieved in a healthy, beautiful way."

Whilst playing games, Steven and Joyce were flirting with each other on the stage, earlier there had been rumours between the two, so off the stage, Steven called Joyce over for an interview. Steven laughed: "She is my 'martial auntie', she's crazy! Crazy auntie..." As for Joyce, she referred to him as "Crazy Boy". Steven revealed that whilst filming this show with Maggie and Joyce, the words "Idiotic, Maniacal and Crazy" were all there.

mv for new album promo

Sunday, June 22, 2003
Steven Ma appeared at a promotion in Lei Yu Muen yesterday where he signed copies of his new album for fans as well as playing games with them. Among the games was one where they had to stick a picture of Steven onto a board and add a body for him. One fan gave him the body of a turtle and another fan made a mistake in the wording turning "Steven Ma Forever" into "Steven Ma Ends", making Steven rather speechless. Afterwards, Steven says that he doesn't mind because it was just a mistake by a young fan.

The music video for Steven's new song "Talk of Me" (temporary name) will be directed by himself for the first time and he hopes that his good friend Maggie Cheung will appear in this video. Steven says: "If she agrees then I will ask a designer to help her create a new image, hopefully creating the vision of an angel." Steven praises Maggie saying she has been really fit and hopes that she will help him complete his virgin production. Steven says candidly that since he entered showbiz, the best friends he has made are Maggie and Joyce Coi, he and Maggie are like brothers and he sees Joyce as his professional auntie because she is in a higher generation to him. Steven laughs: "She says I should call her 'Pretty Auntie' and she will call me 'Guo Yee'." [Em's note: Reference to Xiao Long Nu and Yang Guo in Return of the Condor Heroes.]

2010 JSG: Ghost Writer's themesong

steven weibo entry 6/10 22:33
JSG has finished recording successfully. My thanks to Hong Kong & mainland China fans that came to support me. Was very moved and very grateful. Today read the report in a certain weekly magazine. I’m really not angry at all but I have a few words to say: 4th Brother's (fans’ nickname for him)17th maxim:

My upbringing was grassroot, but I had a warm home! I'm not rich but I work hard at my job, and take care of my family! I'm not highly educated but I'll self-study; learning is a lifelong process. I'm very ordinary, but in this world, there is only one me, no another me. 4th Brother – mutual sharing.

(Caution): This report is more fabrication than truth, reposted mainly for info on Vivian's restaurant.

(TN: Steven had denied ever saying to reporter that he and Vivian would get married.)

(TN: Steven had denied ever saying to reporter that he and Vivian would get married.)

(image)

(caption)

(caption)

(caption)

I'm the relative to a sick person

I'm the relative to a sick person
June 7 2003

Steven Ma has recently published a book entitled "I am the relative of a sick person". In real life, he himself was also the relative of a sick person as his own mother battled for 22 years against cancer. Some people say that where there is illness, there are no devoted sons, but this is not true for Steven as not only was he totally devoted to his mother, he also extends his concern to other patients as well. He knows that the patient's families are often overlooked, but bears the most pressure, so in writing his book, he hopes that we can all learn to look after others a little more.

With three renowned celebrities: Liza Wang, Siu Kam Chi (widow of Kiu Wan) and Alan Tam agreeing to write prefaces for the book, they each give him their precious opinions and share their personal feelings.

Liza Wang agreed to write her piece because she admires Steven's patient manner towards life as he takes each step in turn as has been shown in the strong foundations he has built his acting career on, so she feels that he will have put the same amount of preparation and commitment into writing his book. Also he will not do this for any cheap publicity stunt, but because he really has the devotion and sincerity towards the subject. Liza hopes that through the eleven stories in the book, people can be awoken to the people around us and the love that exists.

Steven admires Liza's professionalism to her work and her determined character, saying that he has learned a lot from working with her. He says he knows that Liza herself has had to battle against illness in the past but still works her hardest and it is this drive that he hopes Liza can express in her opinions.

When Steven approached Alan Tam for his opinions, Alan said that for something so charitable, then he was happy to help. He says that after reading the eleven stories, he felt like he had just drank a bowl of chicken soup for the soul as he really felt the feelings of the families. Alan is proud of Steven's ambassadorial spirit and says that although he is lucky not to have a terminally ill person in his family, he has an elderly father who requires just as much care and attention from his family and friends, which is the real moral behind the book.

Alan is the evergreen of HK's pop world and a great influential character in society. Steven sees him as the most respected of his seniors and he really appreciates Alan taking the time to read his work and offer his precious comments.

Siu Kam Chi is the widow of the late master Kiu Wang and a devout Christian who spent many years tending to her husband who had a heart condition. She wanted to share her experiences, but says that life wasn't so hard for her because her husband listened to the doctors advice. She says that if the patients themselves will do what the doctors say then this will help to put their families' minds at rest. She feels that for Steven to have the heart to write the book, he is like an angel spreading the word of love and she wanted to praise his dedication.

The eleven patients in Steven's book suffered from stroke, heart conditions, epilepsy and other terrible diseases and includes Steven's own story. The title comes from the feeling when the family are waiting outside the ward and the doctor emerges to ask who are the relatives of the patient, this stirs a great emotion and he feels it brings all these people together.

Steven's late mother started her battle with cancer when Steven was six years old and fought for 22 years against the disease. Only young at the time, it was only when he was at secondary school when he realised that his mother was being tortured by the illness. After some early operations, his mother's cancer returned six years before she died and as the advances in medicine were not as good then, she unfortunately lost her battle and died.

Whilst his mother lay in the grasps of illness, Steven was exposed to the warmth and cold of human nature as he saw the a loving mother who was sick in the next ward and how her children would come night and day to care for her with total filial devotion; whereas in the next room was a lady who was also ill, but her husband, mother-in-law and son never cared for her and only cared about the expense and when she would die, making Steven want to go an beat them up.

With all these stories, it has made Steven realise that although he has lost his mother, he is still a lucky man. Treasure the people around you, is not a concept that many will understand.
