Mrs. Alice Chiu (趙曾學韞), Cady Lam, Adky Wen Ying Hong (he did the cooking too), also attended.

S: No, no. Rah, rah, rah. (WTH? Awkward!)

Voice: Aiya! Could it be that he broke up (with gf)? 

Indeed, Steven's reaction is strange. Fine, so he didn't want to get into personal stuff, just said it composedly without acting all flustered, so much so he even ended the interview abruptly and yes, awkwardly with "rah rah rah". Awkward and weird!  Usually he's quite smooth at fielding this kind of trite, intrusive questions (at his age and being a seasoned veteran celeb that he is) so why this uncharacteristic awkwardness and fluster?  It's not like he didn't anticipate the question given that VD is just round the corner.  Maybe he is planning to  surprise his unsuspecting gf on that day hence his reticence?

As the Chinese saying goes, “men at age 40 blossom like flowers”, and at age 42 Steven Ma is right now in his prime. The career mind Steven, like a workaholic, has been working nonstop in recent years, and as yet remains unmarried.  Recently, he personally produced a mini movie entitled “Father Bus”《爸士》as a tribute to his father.  Actually all along Steven has this wish to get married and have children but unfortunately his relationship with long time (ex) girlfriend suffers successive separations and reconciliations, ever decisive in his career Steven is presently at a loss with his love life.

As a first time producer and scriptwriter, Steven’s mini movie “Father Bus” is both a tribute and a Father’s Day gift to his bus driver father. The movie premise is inspired by Steven’s own childhood environment and memories. Steven says: "The boy in the mv (Chun Jai) is me as child. I myself portrayed my father.”  Most people have fuzzy childhood memories but Steven’s childhood recollection is distinct, even down to the details!  He says: “I remember things that happened when young, like how in the mv my father slaps me when in real life he canned me with a rattan, and how the si-nai (neighbor) calls me an ill-bred; that actually happened too.” The actual event was during one mid-autumn festival when Steven was about five years old. In the incident, the neighbor’s child tossed his/her burned lantern into a trash can which Steven later picked up to play. When the neighbor saw that she scolded him for being an ill-bred with no manners and even scolded his mother who was there!

In past interviews, Steven has always named Lam King Kong  (not Taiwan King Kong) among his tvb good friends.  Haiz, though looks better on tv than on print, I still dislike his new haircut.  Does not suit his personality and age.

 2012/09/24 Steven Ma finds time to attend a function.  He says that he will spend  the Mid-Autumn festival in Hong Kong. He reveals he was very naughty when young, that he wax-burned and burned roaches, but tells everybody not to do what he did.  

Voiceover : So go home for Mid-Autumn Festival meal; should bring girlfriend home to meet family bah. Apparently there was some issue between you two before. Are you two ok now?

Steven: We've reconciled. 

Reporter: So will take her home for dinner?

Steven: No necessarily because she too has to celebrate with her own family.  Will depend on timing. I'll wait until October 1st, the moon chasing day, to have dinner with family.  So will see how it goes.  But we can go somewhere to enjoy ourselves not necessarily have to have dinner together.  Will see. 


TN: Yay, Steven's back together with Vivian. So that woman in Steven's earlier weibo is indeed Vivian. Good luck to them.   So much drama in their relationship.

2012 HK Food Expo

August 18 2012, Steven Ma participated in the Hong Kong Food Expo 2012 activities.  Steven said he had started cooking since elementary school so cooking simple dishes will not faze him. Though Steven has already broken up with his ex-girlfriend they have kept in contact and that their current relationship is even better than before. Steven expresses hope to reconcile.

SM: "Will have to depend on fate ba or if she so willing. Because honestly I'm seldom in Hong Kong, and she is also very busy and seldom in Hong Kong, too.  So will have to see how she feels about it.  Because in the past I seldom had time to accompany her, that was my fault.  I hope if she can  bear with it, we can come up with a compromise to smooth out our differences.  I think there's still a possibility."


On TVB collaboration, Steven says TVB is still his maternal home but because of his work his schedule the earliest won't be until May next year.

SM: Actually it's like this, early this year when I left TVB, actually TVB has kept in contact with me. Recently, they did ask me when I would have time to film their series . I said because TVB is still my maternal home, and also the place I grew up in, if they truly want me to go back, I'll prioritize it as my first consideration. But the earliest will have to be in May next year.

TVB artist, Steven Ma, has excellent culinary skill. He’s at HK Food Expo today sharing his cooking experience with his audience. He also reveals that he and his ex-girlfriend’s past relationship was actually nurtured through cooking together.

SM: Yes, sometimes we would shop for grocery together; in the supermarket. Then we either went to her house or mine, and we cooked together. And then we dined together. And then I would make soup for later, and when I was done (making soup), we drank red wine and shoot the breeze. In the past we would do that.

Last year, Steven terminated his contract with TVB, and took on the role of a tv series producer and ventured north to invest in tv series and to release music album, enabling him many opportunities to encounter the opposite sex. In August when we interviewed him he was not against looking for a wife in the mainland. (tn: per video, SM never said that. Reporter put words in his mouth.) But today when we asked him the same question again, there is no such possibility for such a relationship to develop. The reason being that he has reconnected with his ex-girlfriend, and that their reconciliation is a possibility.

SM: Actually, recently, this past 6 months our contact has indeed increased from before. I think go with fate ba.  Because, originally due to time, or my work , we were often at work in different places. I was either in Hong Kong or mainland. And she was either in Hong Kong or in Europe, like Italy or somewhere. So we rarely saw each other. But now she’s in Hong Kong as I am so we see each other more often. And our communication has also improved. Wait and see ba. Now, there is~; have reverted back to friends kind of feeling, close friends feeling. But in the future if can continue to once again walk that path then will have to depend on fate.

Hope Steven can reconcile with ex. In his heart she is probably already his wife, marriage to him is just a certificate formality.  All these news about mainland 'milk cows' bombshells gave me such a bad impression of mainland actresses. Also may I say from browsing their weibos, I am also not impressed with and even wary of his mainland collaborators?  Mainland chicks are reputed to be overly 'friendly' towards HK males. (re qing)  It could be their 'overly friendliness' toward him that Steven so publicly announces his heart still belongs to his ex gf?

Since 1993 when he first joined TVB to shoot《开心华之里》, Steven during his 19 years in TVB has filmed 33 tv series in all, including his Dr. Stephen Chan (陈卓尧) in Files of Justice 《壹号皇庭》, Dr. Joe Cheung (张家裕) in Healing Hands, Emperor Kang Xi in Duke of Mt. Deer 《鹿鼎记》, and horse trainer Gam Yuen, in 《勇往直前》, all of which prompted much enthusiastic discussions among tv viewers. In 2006 Steven received TVB’s 'Most Favorite Male Character’ award, and thereafter have been nominated several times as top 5 finalists for best actor but regrettably to these days he has not been able to win the TV King title.  Toward that, his fans labeled him as TVB’s uncrowned tv king.  Steven responded cheerfully: "Uncrowned or not, doesn’t matter, so long the audiences like it, that’s good enough.”

A few days ago, Yuan Yang Pei 《鸳鸯配》troupe made an appearance in Shanghai TV Festival. The main leads Steven Ma and Zhang Meng et al  in accepted this reporter's interview.

In Yuan Yang Pei, Steven Ma portrays a pair of twin brothers, one simple-minded the other cool, and both brothers separately have an entangled love relationship with the female character portrayed by the leading lady, Zhang Mei. During the interview, Steven smiled and said that his own love relationship is still on shaky ground: "earlier separated with ex-girlfriend, currently still 空窗期". And then through space he confessed to ex-girlfriend, "My love has never changed, if can continue to be together, of course that would be the best."

  Awwwwww!  Vivian, don't let such a good man get away again. Yes, he had hurt you many times in the past but please forgive him and take him back. Every one deserves a second/third/fourth chance.

When I heard Steven's reason for their breakup, link to Steven's talk with Eileen Cha  I had this sneaky suspicion that Vivian's parents must have played a part in it. It wasn't all that long ago when Steven blissfully announced his marriage plans to the media, so between then and the breakup something happened to drastically change his mind. I bet Vivian's parents must have said some words that had wounded Steven's heart badly and then of course there is his chow chiu male chauvinistic pride.

In yesterday Eileen Cha's interview with Steven, Miu Siu Ching and Ha Yu (see 2nd part link below), Ha Yu talked about his character's disapproval of having Fatt Zai as a suitor to his beloved 2nd daughter and God forbids, as his son-in-law because Fatt Zai is not rich. Ha Yu like Fatt zai but only as a friend, in fact, he thinks Fatt zai is a delightful person just not good enough for his precious daughter, that's all.

All four of them present agree that's understandable as it is the natural sentiment of most parents to want the best for their children. Steven interjected: "So, Siu Yen jie, now you see why I have to work even harder." And Eileen said: "It's like your case, for the real Ma Zai."

I will transcribe this segment in  part3 tudou link later today. This snatch of conversation is just the tip of an iceberg.

Q: Why did Steven hope to get back with girl after he left TVB?

Last year, Steven described himself as an "apron strings child" in that he could stay at the same job during his lifetime.  So, why then was he adamant in terminating early his contract with his maternal home TVB that he has served for the past 18 years?  After his contract termination, he now begins to plan on how to get back with his former girlfriend, why?  Steven Ma, who just got back to Hong Kong  from shooting, "Legend of the Yuan Empire Founder", called me on the phone and said: "I want to get on your program to talk about my feelings."  

A:  Income increase. Steven is now more confident toward his love relationship as he walks cheerfully into the broadcasting studio.

He says: "Shooting in mainland truly opened up my eyes to the world and broadened my horizon. I'm happy."  

But I persist with my question: "Since you are so faithful and cherish old friendships and old times, why then did you insist on terminating your contract early?" 

 "The company has many people who treated me well, especially Stephen Chan who has helped enormously. My situation is truly very unique."  And then he went on to compliment TVB for being kind (to him) and for its massive influence worldwide.

So I ask him: "If TVB was so good why did you want to terminate your contract early? And moreover, refused to sign a per series contract with it? " 

"TVB by itself definitely poses no problem.  So Steven's answer implies the problem is of an interpersonal issue?

Besieged by me, Steven would only say: "Siu Yan jie, I'm a mute eating bitter lotus (suffered in silence) What can be said I've already said to you"

Steven reveals that at year end he'll take on a new endeavor whereby he will shoot a 30 episode series that he will write and act in.  Also, he has not given up on the music industry. (tn: Not as a singer but more in releasing another music album, which incidentally had been one of his 2009 contract terms.)

I ask him: "Is it because of your breakup with girlfriend that you are so concentrated on your work? And set your sight on Mainland now?"  

Unexpectedly he says: "We've had a favorable turnaround. Currently trying to mend the relationship."

Getting back together?

Steven say: "Still under observation. Before I felt that my financial situation was still not stable enough. I didn't want her to lower her lifestyle because of me.  So, considered breakup. I disclosed our breakup for her sake lest after our parting she met a new boyfriend and because we did not disclose our breakup her new boyfriend would unwittingly become the third party. But after our breakup, (tn: a year ago) neither of us got a new bf/gf.   Moreover, my income has increased tremendously so now I can afford her a lifestyle she is used to. Plus my temper has become better, not so stubborn anymore.  So now we can get along happier."

TN: Haiz, Steven! But I wasn't surprised by this revelation of Steven's chauvinistic male pride. Also not surprised at all that Steven hopes to get back with former girlfriend since he is a faithful 长情 sort of guy. 【hi好酷 新闻】 2012 1/11 Steven and girlfriend Vivian (许慧玲) dated for 8 years. Their plan to marry last year did not pan out instead it ended up as a break-up.  Last night Steven revealed that he had broken up with girlfriend of 8 years for a year now.  Two days ago (1/8) Steven attended a new Avon 22nd anniversary function. During the event he was surrounded by fans especially children. Steven thought the kids were really cute said it's about time for him to get one for himself, too.

However, when this reporter asked Steven when he is going to get married, he suddenly became evasive in his response. After persistent questioning, Steven finally tacitly acknowledged that he had broken up with his girlfriend of many years for a year now.  Steven and Vivian's fate started from red wine. Vivian is involved in a red wine business and this wealthy girlfriend of Steven's had been kept confidential all along, until two years ago when Vivian appeared at one of Steven's series promotional events. It was then his girlfriend was officially made public.
 
As to their breakup decision Steven refused to reveal the reason for it. He just wanted to make their breakup known.  It is unknown if breakup was due to their marriage being delayed time and again?  "No need to go into details, want to keep some privacy. (Why wait until a year later to reveal?) To protect the former girlfriend. (But now) she may date another man. I worry that she might be photographed by someone and then be gossiped upon. That's why I revealed it now."

He said: "The lunar new year is upon us so here's wishing everybody happiness in the new year.  (Is he in a new love relationship?) At this time, I' don't want to talk about my love life. I just want to concentrate on my work."

When asked if his early contract termination issue with TVB has been resolved, Steven said that they are still working on resolving it, and that his original thinking has not changed. He will certainly inform the public when it has been resolved.

 I guess it is true then that Steven has broken up with his ex-girlfriend.  I feel really sad for Steven and Vivian. 7-8 years is a long time.

*From the video, the kids did not kiss Steven.  Instead they were quite shy, it was Steven who took the initiative to hug them, no kissing exchanged.  Reporters tend to exaggerate everything.  This report said "silent tacit acknowledgment", other reports said "Steven admitted".  So exactly what did Steven say? Who knows.

Haiz! First news report of the year, and it had to be this bad news. But fans are all taking this piece of news with a grain of salt,  until Steven confirms it.

When asked when is he going to get married? Steven played dumb and said: “I drank too much last night, still not sober yet!” When pressed, he answered evasively that anyway he is already a big boy, so whether work or personal matters, he has plans for them.

Before Steven gets into position, he will always discuss every minute details of his makeover with the responsible crew members. He learns a lot from their discussions, and now knows how to braid a Qing queue that is considered well done. Costume wise, he understands the appropriate ‘culture crane and martial tiger’ designs designated for various official robes. Also, applying basic make-up on himself does not faze him, even the more intricate drawing of the eyebrows, he can do it with much aplomb.

These days, with the help of the pros, Steven’s realistic makeovers now surpass those of the past. “As an actor, one has to have a realistic makeover for the screen character. I have acted in many ancient costume series, so now I'm very familiar on how to wear the different costumes properly. ” From not knowing how to fight initially to now doing a good job of it, Steven is very grateful to TVB martial arts instructors for their tutorage.

In Fighting Scenes, Stoic in Injuries

Through the years, he has acted in many period dramas, each drama requiring more fighting than the next. This slight-frame fellow - no one expected he could endure such arduousness. No matter which part of his body was injured, or which part was abraded, without a word Steven would just look for the antiseptic spray bottle and sprayed it on his wound, after which, he would then stand up, brush the dust off his clothes and said: “Mai Wai!” (Ready to roll!) The martial arts brotherhood, from initially disbelieving Steven would do the fighting himself to later believing he truly did not want a stuntman for his scenes, began to respect Steven's resilience and tenacity, and they have even become good friends now.

“My work right now is very hectic.  I can’t deal with these conflicted feelings just yet. Who knows, maybe one day, we might get back together again.”

Career oriented Steven, even though he has had plans to get married once past 30 something but year after year and now at 37, he is still single. “I, too, yearn for a home of my own, to have kids, best having a girl first, then a son. I believe an older sister will love her little brother…”

He smiles as his mind wanders off. Looks like if the time comes, he might even do a flash wedding.
