Tavia Yeung talks about Steven Ma

Transcript by Akazukin AF# 1498 Posted 18 June 2009 - 09:47 AM

Tavia attended a radio interview with Cha Siu Yan, Steven was mentioned in some part. I (sic Akazukin) only translated the part mentioned about Steven, not really anything new, but as long as relevant to Steven...

*******************************************

Cha Siu Yan = C
Tavia = T

[C and T talked about BTROC]

[C and T briefly talked about the pressure of SITS and talked about Tavia's first collaboration with Raymond Wong. Tavia said that Raymond Wong is very quiet but when he talked, he would often talked about his wife. And this caused her to have no imagination as his onscreen partner.]

C: Then, do you have any imagination facing Steven Ma?

T: This one, I have. This one, I have. This one, the imagination is older brother.

C and T: Hahahaha...

C: Yes, Steven Ma is really like a big brother.

T: Yes. But actually...

C: Everyone...

T: Actually it's a good thing, I feel. Because I feel that besides needing to have a collaboration feel with your partner, if you have the family feeling offscreen like a brother or good friend, it will help us to get into the character in the series more. If I treat you as nothing but a colleague, I will feel very alien, and the acting won't be real.

C: Steven Ma, in the series, is your big enemy.

T: Yes.

C: And Raymond Wong is your first lover.

T: Actually, to be accurate, my first lover is Steven Ma.

C: Yes, but you guys didn't continue, and then, no more?

T: Because actually we like each other, but due to the relationship and something he did cause me to develop the feelings of hatred against him. I don't like him. And also because I enter the Wu family, I develop "ching yi" with the second young master. Actually, that kind of love is not present. The one present is the "yi" (chivalry, loyalty, friendship).

C: Outside the series, between Raymond Wong and Steven Ma, which one would you pick as a husband?

T: Can I have both of them... added together?

C: Waaaa... how greedy are you! You really become Sing Suet?

T: No.

C: Sing Suet said women can have concubine, men, no, men can have concubines, women can't marry two husbands?

T: Sister Siu Yan, you are a modern career woman. Now...

C: I'm not.

T: But I feel, how come men can have mistresses outside, have you thought that women can also have ones?

C: No. You look at people like ..., bringing disaster to oneself. Don't be involved with such a thing.

T: No. I feel that we can have such a thinking, but to do it is another thing. But we can have such a thinking. But of course, I won't do it. I'm also a traditional woman, I feel I am. But in real life, if you ask me to choose, I will...

C: You have said it out. Both also....

T: I want Raymond Wong's character of always mentioning me.

C: Hoh... so that he would mention you in front of other people non-stop. My wife... My wife... My wife...

T: Yes.

C and T: Hahahaha....

T: Steven's generosity* (包容) and caringness.

C: Ha.

T: He really knows how to take care of me.

C: But he is very long-winded.

T: Long-winded is okay. What's important is he is reasonable. I'm most afraid of husbands who are not reasonable. Right? If I reason and you don't listen. If you don't mind to sit down and talk about reasonings with me, we can talk.

C: Did Steven Ma talk about reasonings with you in the filming of this series, Tavia Yeung?

T: Actually yes. But the so-called reasonings are giving opinions, not really reasonings. Because I wouldn't really do anything wrong, but he would give me pointers, because after all, he is my senior. He has more experiences in acting than me. I feel that juniors listening to seniors is very important.

C: But you already got Best Supporting Actress. What else can he give you as pointers?

T: What pointers? Very important, after receiving award, cannot be too proud.

C: He will remind you such a thing?

T: He won't remind me such thing, but I feel when communicating, I don't give people the impression of such thing. He didn't remind me such things, but possibly like when we filmed a lot and filmed one series after another, it's hard to get out of the previous character. When filming with him, maybe some character and personality of the previous one has to be shed off to get into the current character. Sometimes I sway from the character, he would remind me for this character I should be like this, I shouldn't be like this. Sometimes, I myself would miss it.

C: You have collaborated with Steven Ma for 3 series.

T: Yes, yes.

C: The currently airing is Sweetness in the Salt. The one not yet aired is Stars of Love. (eta 2013 Cupid stupid) The one which had been aired before is Land of Wealth. Three series... you weren't able to get out of the character? You treat Steven Ma as the Steven Ma from Land of Wealth?

T: No. I'm talking about for example, I have just finished BTROC, and starting a new series....

.........

Akazukin note:  I think she was talking about during the time of filming SITS, she was also required to film MR. Luckily, Steven is there to remind her. I would imagine filming two different series at the same time would be difficult.

****************************
Tamaya: I guess to some people Steven may come across as long-winded, (and he is indeed that, sometimes) Steven himself did mention that he knew he's being too philosophically long winded when he glimpsed the reporters' glazed eyes.

*But I took Tavia's praise of Steven's 包容 (bao yung) as him being tolerant or forgiving or charitable or magnanimous to others. Of course, the word 'generosity' encompasses all these descriptions. I'm just being anal.

**************************************************************************

Akazukin: (re: bao yung)  I totally agree. It's hard to translate such chinese words with one word. He is all that you described/translated from Tavia's words.

I don't really regard Steven as long-winded, maybe because I myself love to talk about philosophy. At least, like Tavia said, he is reasonable. I find people who spent hours and hours complaining about the same thing and repeat it again the next day and the next next day as long-winded, not the type that spent hours talking about philosophy. Because once you get to philosophy, really there is no end to it. But I take Cha Siu Yan comment about Steven as long-winded as a sign of friendship, that she feels close enough to tease him that way.

2009 Fala's radio Interview: Steven mention

AF#1484  Posted 12 June 2009 - 10:06 PM

In a recent interview with Cha Xiu Yan, Fala talked about her role as Laughing Sor and on how she defeated her rivals to finally clinch the much coveted role. Ms. Cha snuck in the rumor that she (Fala) knows how to brush up to the top brass, and getting the covet role only serves to heighten it, so how can she dispel this rumor?

Fala (embarrassed) admitted that she does not communicate very well with her colleagues therefore may have given them a wrong impression of herself. She does not sugar coat her words and seldom praise people, but will bluntly and directly say what is in her mind. But she is trying to improve in this area which she admits is lacking. She then brought up Steven in her conversation.

"Because we are right now shooting Pu Songling, in the beginning Steven and I were brothers. I was pretending to be a male then. But later I became a girl and fell in love with him. We shared lots of scenes together. After a period of shooting and he has gotten to know me better, he msn me, he said: "Ah Mui (he calls me Ah Mui, younger sister) Ah Mui ah, actually Ah Goh admires how very diligent you are in your work, but sometimes when you communicate with other people, you may want to pay attention to the way you talk, make it easier for the other people to accept."

Translation of fans' essays 2007

Reposted from AF post#1218 Posted 20 March 2009 - 09:32 PM
Getting to know Steven through his fans continues:
From: steven's warm house 温馨马仔小屋's archive.

Date:2007.02.03
Place: Taiwan – Sichuan, China
Interviewee: FanA (阿尔萨兰)Webmistress of a now defunct Steven’s Taiwan fansite (2001-?). Fan since 1999 Quote: Actually really wish when he first started out, I was there to support him, to like him. 其实很希望 他出道时 就能支持他喜欢他

Interviewer: (桔子) webmistress of Steven’s Warm House.

An Excerpt of their online impromptu interview:

桔子: You said if it wasn’t for that face-to-face meeting, you would have been just a regular fan. Does that mean you don’t see yourself as a regular fan?

FanA: Well, I’ve like him for such a long time, as for that ardent enthusiam, that’s gone. I now look upon him more like a relative, like a friend ba

..........................
桔子. En, I remember reading an article on another celebrity. Inside was a remark that said, what Scorpio celebrities attract is not the fanatic fans, rather, they are admirers. I appreciate this comment because I think the usage of admirers is very appropriate.

fanA: Very true! He has the kind of charisma that makes one fall in love with him (tn: or another meaning- charisma that inspires admiration) 倾心的魅力. Which is why at the time when I liked him a lot, I never thought of myself as a fanatic fan. My feelings towards him were mild/calm sincerity. I guess many people were that way too.

桔子: Mild? Don’t think so. haha! I believe it’s more a blending of rationality and passion. Passionate yet tempered.

FanA: Maybe

桔子: Because that’s the impression you gave me. Often times, when I was being impulsive you would even restrain me.

FanA: I’ve a more reserved personality.

桔子: but you’ve been crazy before too
FanA: When I was crazy, I would get jealous too, and also get mad.

桔子: Besides being crazy during that 探班 time (tn:Steven-fans meeting), what other occasion were you craziest? And you mentioned jealous?

FanA: craziest? I don’t recall ever being that. Because there weren’t any opportunities for me to act that way. As for jealousy - only over minor stuff. Every fan, especially those whose feelings are deeply engaged, there’s none that will not be jealous over some petty incidences.

桔子: such as the Taiwanese gf?
FanA: Not only that, even those actresses in the photos kissing mouth to mouth with him; I’ll be jealous.
桔子: Hahahaa! Well, as to that….

FanA: After all his past, we can’t participate in it anymore
桔子: Does saying this give you a twinge of sadness?

FanA: En! Actually really wish when he first started out, I was there to support him, to like him.

桔子: En! True! Sometimes I feel that way too. Even though I could get to know his past from other people, and even felt emotional at hearing it, but still there’s this blank in my memory of him. I’ve this slightly dissatisfied feeling. Bu gan xing!

FanA: True, which is why I so diligently collect old news, magazines on him, hoping to fill in this blank in my memory.

桔子: That's why it is better to appreciate the present now because we have our own memories

FanA: en!
桔子: Conversely, these memories to the new fans will be stuff they will regret not having. Haha!
................

桔子: Last question, having like Xiao Ma all these years, what is your deepest feeling on it?
FanA: That’s tough to answer, like what?

桔子: like use a phrase to describe your feelings for supporting him all these years, just whatever.

FanA: Ok then, Mazai, if you still don’t find a girlfriend to marry, then I might not be able to get myself married off.

桔子: hohoho! Will this give him pressure? Hahaha!

FanA: Hahaha! Because of him, I have squandered (?) 耽误 many of my youthful years ya. But if he doesn’t get marry, I think I will find it hard to give up ba!

桔子: The pressure just got bigger
FanA: Aren't you the same too?
桔子: lets change the subject hehe!
FanA: I purposely call you out haha
桔子: Anything else you wish to add to?
FanA: Mazai, take care of your health, of yourself, we’ll always support you!

Nip Ji Yuen as the red rose

AF link lots more discussions
Steven as red rose

Akazukin: And once again awed by Steven's charming demeanour there, how could Sing Suet not fall in love with him?

Tamaya: Reminds me of a Steven fan's Sits article (SM Warm House) whereby she uses blood red rose and white rose to allegorize JY and Hin, respectively.

Inspired by her writing, I came up with my own version.
Jiyuen is a wild, blood red rose. Its blossom, glorious in its unbridled beauty; its fragrance, alluring and enticing. The rose is an entrapment to unsuspecting admirers for its beauty conceals an insidious thorny side. Secured in its superiority, the red rose stands tall and haughty, its beauty for all to see. Over endowed, it becomes self-absorbed, self-centered, and self-willed. Suet, never one for flowers, was inexplicably drawn to such sublimity; its exotic beauty awakens in her a full blown passion. She seeks to posses the red rose, and in her naivety, pricks her fingers on its thorns drawing instant blood, and inflicting immeasurable and irrevocable hurt. In return, the red rose is bruised and transformed by her touch. Once bitten twice shy, Suet is now forever changed; her innocence destroyed, her family destroyed, her past destroyed, her life as she knew it, all destroyed. A different kind of passion now burns deep within her heart, where love used to reside, hatred now reigns supreme. However, as time passes, the passion scale of hatred and love mixture slowly but inevitably once again tips towards love. For indeed, the ardent of the red rose cannot be denied.

Hin is a white rose inside a vase. Its beauty, pure and understated. Its fragrance, mild and pleasing. It is tranquil and serene as it stays prop up inside its vase, content to just light up its surrounding with pure beauty and to impart its mild aroma to its appreciators.
---------------------------

The response to the rose allegory from another Steven fan: :thumbsup
To say JY is a blood red rose, might as well say
he is a warm and gentle poison
once taken, the pain is immeasurable
and the poison, irremovable.
and as for Er Shao as a white rose, might as well say
he is like the moonbeam shining on one's bed
cool and clear, its ray of light bringing warmth
to the darkness surrounding oneself.
who could bear to let go of the moonbeam
that brings warmth to oneself?

**********************
Akazukin: I would rather Suet travelling on her own in spring season and then she stopped when she saw a field of chrysanthemums, before a firefly flew to her and she followed it shortly before she saw Ji Yuen who has been petrified looking at her. And all their reactions remain the same. At least the scene won't throw me off from its unrealisticness.

**********************
Tamaya: I prefer your field of mums to snowland for ending. But in my neck of the woods, fireflies only appear during summer time and travel in swarms rather than solitarily. And they are most visible at night because of their glow. But of course, these are the American fireflies, don’t know about China’s own particular type. :tricky: How about this: Dusk. On the way to no-where or half-where or some-where, Suet happens upon a field of wild, yellow daisies lighted up by a swarm of hovering, sparkling fireflies. One detaches itself and flies towards her, stops and dances before her eyes. It then flits away, purposefully. Suet follows, certain it is Hin’s spirit leading her to a warm shelter for the night. Even as she approaches the safe haven of a cave, a familiar aroma wafts towards her, instantly evoking warm memories of the past: spuds roasting over open fire, hmm yum yum! Stomach rumbling, she hurries expectantly and nervously into the cave, following the light emanating from inside. Voila! Surprise! Surprise! two pairs of eyes widening with surprise, with hope, and with love; eyes met, locked and tear-up. Time stands still. Yuen opens wide his arms and Suet stumbles dazedly into them. Embraced. Then they partake the roasted spuds that JY has so thoughtfully roasted for two. The end!

Akazukin
The reason why I mentioned spring rather than summer is because it left a bit of surreal feeling while it is not too far-fetched and impossible like fireflies in winter/snow. It could be the end of spring and towards the beginning of summer. Dusk sounds reasonable, although I would prefer to have just one firefly instead of many. So that too many fireflies won't take the attention off the flowers (LOL, I'm selfish). And OMG, how much I love them to hug! I remembered saying that what's missing in the ending was a hug when I first finished the ending. I think a hug would give a complete closure to the series. But I get that TVB wants an open ending, so that Hin's fanatics won't be too pissed off or those that oppose the idea of marrying someone who 'killed' your parents won't be too pissed off too. I guess that's why they left off the hug. May I know why Yuen was roasting for two though?

Akazukin:
Wow, comparing roses to males is quite new and original to me. However, the description seems fitting. I have always preferred red rose to white rose, although I do like both (applies to both the flowers and to the characters). I'm reminded that Yuen's thorn didn't only prick Suet but also Ting Yin's. The other day rewatching SITS, I was once again impressed by Steven, and this time I would want to talk about the scene where he first met Minister Yiu. Yuen and his godfather were just passing shadows until Minister Yiu called To, but somehow, you do feel these two passing shadows are different from the rest. There is something with the way Steven walked and his posture that gives off the vibes that he is not just normal average citizen. I feel that all over SITS, he did give off this vibe that he is from a military background and I applaud him for that. Such little thing, such little scene, but it makes difference.

After reading someone said that Steven was supposed to play the role of Hin, I start wondering whether I would have preffered Yuen or Hin if Steven acted as Hin instead. And after imagining how Steven would act as Hin, I think I would still go for Stevia. I realised that the large part of the reason why I love Yuen-Suet so much is because of their chemistry, and when it comes to chemistry, it takes two keys to make noise. Even if Yuen was acted by someone of awesome acting skill like Wayne, and he does a great job in the role. He might not have the same chemistry level with Tavia. As the case with Raymond Wong. Raymond did a great job as Hin, but his chemistry with Tavia just can't beat that of Stevia, where they can communicate just through eye contacts, or the feeling that they are connected even when they were just walking together side by side.

Maybe I would have loved Hin even more if Steven took the role (not saying RayW didn't do a good job, he did a great job, just that I think I would prefer Steven), but if I'm to be asked whether I prefer Steven as Yuen or Hin. I prefer him as Yuen. I just love the masculinity of Yuen, someone who is usually cool (even with his friends, let alone strangers), can be so passionate when falling in love is just full score attraction. I like the fact that Yuen is a righteous and good person and overall nice, but he is not downright useless nice, like how he didn't bother to let way for Ting Yin when she tried to embarrass him. But if Steven took the role of Hin, I would imagine he would add more masculine blood to the character, while Raymond Wong's Hin is more gentle overall.

************************************

Tamaya: His original words in the spoiler. It could be interpreted either way. That he accepted to act in Sits as JY, or that he chose JY over Hin as his choice of character to act. Read in context with his whole entry, I think it was probably the latter. I recall a news report saying how Hin character was tailor made to salvage a misbehaving tvb artiste's reputation and jump start his career - something like that. But I guess the character was further polished after Steven had rejected that role. As an artiste, Steven must have considered screen time and whatnots, and in spite of them, he still went with JY character because it struck a chord in him and challenged his acting skill. Anyway, imo, JY's male lead status could have been easily ascertained with a revised script to include some sweet flashbacks on Yuen/suet romance, and like you've suggested,  some indication of JY's inner struggles when planning the demise of Dou camp etc etc. I wonder if the aired Sits in HK will differ from Astro's in that Yuen/Suet screentime has been added in.

sm baidu on Sweetness in the Salt

( disagree with her: a person's self- preservation is naturally at the utmost in time of peril, nothing to do with his love for Suet)

source: sm baidu link

Steven Ma Wants to Get Married

Tuesday September 1, 2009 Hong Kong
Credits: to hyn5 @ http://hyn5-hyn5.blogspot.com

Steven Ma has been busy filming new series "Transferred Connection of Temptation", and the other day, he filmed a wedding scene with Fala Chen. The couple will have a happy ending in the series. Steven and Fala have filmed many series together, and the two are quite good friends. When Fala was picking out the wedding dress, Steven was serious in giving his opinion. Fala expressed that she really likes working with Steven because he can bring her positive energy when working together. Even if it is hard work, Steven will take a deep breath and say, "Let's go!" and they will continue to strive for success. When Steven is tired and all worn out, he will not speak, but he will definitely not make a scene. Fala really admires Steven for having a good heart, and he is willing to tell his partner the truth; therefore, she has a lot of trust for Steven.

Fala also said that during this cooperation, she discovered that Steven is a person who really wants to get married. "Whenever there are kids filming on scene, he would change himself into a father figure, and treat them with love. He will definitely make a good husband and good father". When asked if she or Steven will marry first, Fala believes Steven will marry first. But Steven did not agree, but expressed that he does want to have a family with a happy marriage. It is his biggest wish. Steven had always wanted to marry before the age of thirty. He also hopes to become a father, and when he gets married, he hopes to have kids right away.
