This is a much more enjoyable program to listen to than Wong Hei et al's program so I'm going to paraphrase this post first rather than Wong Hei's.

Talk about why he turned from singer to actor.  He was planning to quit and had even called up his ex-employee to get back his job.  And then Catherine and Tim Gor called him to audition for DOMD1998

- talk about how Catherine Tsang made him audition for Domd1998. There were many people auditioning for the role including Benny Chan. They all took turns auditioning for Emperor Hong Hei and Wai siu bo.

- What? Even tried for Wai Siu Bo,  come one, no way ba.  At the time, Steven felt he wouldn't be able to do it (cos' he was so green then) but now of course no problem.  When he looked at the playback, so cringe-worthy, so no way would he be picked.

 - To his dismay soon after his audition Tsang called him up to tell him that Tim Gor had picked him for the role. He came up with all kinds of excuses to get out of it but Catherine was someone you can get pass once her mind is made up, so with much trepidation he, like a good boy, called in for work. And to make it worse it was his first ancient tv series and just his luck a Qing dynasty at that. So the makeover crew not only shaved his head bald but also shaved off much of his eyebrows. lol! And voila, came up with a completely different eyebrow shape that he thought made him look so weird. And the make up artist worked on his whole face like making his already tall nose to look taller. Apparently, it was quite a difficult transition for Steven to go from a singer to a Qing dynasty actor.  However, Catherine and Tim gor were right, that series was the starting point of his acting career, and onto being tvb first line actor.

Spencer: But what I want to say is that based on my knowing them all these years, you were right to trust them. I've said this many times already, if one day just these three words, Tsang lai Zan, asks me to return to tvb to shoot a series, I will return, free of charge.

female voice: Zan jie, you remember that. Don't pay Spencer.

Spencer: Because she is yan si (benefactor) a human debt owe must be paid. So sentiment can't be priced. So both Catherine and Tim gor have this sentiment to call on me to do things for them.  Just shoot one series only free of charge.

Steven: Right now I'm negotiating the contract with Catherine (spencer interrupts: You can trust her) Well, what I want to say is to tell her is that Spencer won't ask for payment.

Spencer: She knows.

Steven:  Oh, really?

Spencer: I've said many times.

Steven: This is truth -- Catherine, Tim gor, and another one -- Uncle Choi to me are my tvb benefactor -- the biggest being Catherine.  also need to thank tvb for developing me.

Spencer: So when you see Catherine, tell her that I'll shoot a series for free -- just one. The most difficult debt to repay is yan ching zai -- individual indebtedness, and if you can repay, then you'll do it.

 Akazukin: So does it mean Steven does his make up for his ancient series and even draws eyebrows on his own? Anyway, talking about ancient eyebrows, my favourite is Ji Yuen so far. I think they did fix the eyebrows and make them more ancient and groomed but then they still look very natural. For DOMD, SG, and BH, I think the drawing of the eyebrows are a bit too obvious, and LOW is a bit too ungroomed or short for ancient.

Tamaya:  I think Steven still requires professional help, maybe he does the basic touch-up after his character's face has been put on. 

Didn't really pay attention to his characters' eyebrows, but in Domd he had to have half of his eyebrows shaved off so that the make-up artist could make them look more dramatic.

Recently, Steven Ma has been busy shooting Leung Choi Yuen’s new series, “Thunder of The Forbidden City".  Because this series contains many fighting scenes, Steven’s character as an imperial bodyguard has to fight constantly from day to night, hence, during these few months or so, if not fight until his lower back hurt, then it was fight until his hands swelled up; just his thumb has been injured on the same position three times already.  “The right thumb is swollen, looks like a mandarin duck thumb.  Can’t visit the doctor for it until the shooting wraps up.”

Besides getting hurt, even Heaven played him.  Steven reckons that whenever there was a fight scene or a strenuous scene to be shot, the weather would sure to turn cold.  Earlier, there was this one scene whereby framed by others Steven was sent to jail, while in there, he was brutally beaten. Later, he attempted escape from jail but was quickly attacked from all sides.   On that day, it started off nice and warm, but came nightfall after putting on his “wounded looks”, the temperature suddenly dipped a few notches.  It was also during that fight scene his thumb got hurt; the pain was so excruciating his face distorted in agony.  The injured thumb had to be sprayed with a pain reliever before he could continue working.  Steven quips that he is “Hard Knocks Wai”.  Fortunately, Steven is tough: “Since young, what hardship have I not endured?  But I’ll not be discouraged! A real man should possess the spirit to endure hardships. Even if life is hard, I’ll endure it until it finally changes to a good life.”

TVB has previously broadcasted two of his series. Although some people commented that the series’ timeslots were less than favorable, Ghost Writer was very well received in China and the overseas market. Hence, TV series distributors are keen to invest in it by purchasing its copyright, which comforted Steven. “So long the series gets to be aired, there's no problem, even though it doesn't get any help from good timing.  But, to garner good ratings despite unfavorable timeslot makes me feel prouder.   In any action, there is always going to be losses vs gains.   Anyway, it is enough to do your part well.  People do; Heaven sees.  I believe hard work will definitely pay off.”

Decided to translate it now because I would like to share the 1st two paragraphs here.

His eagerness to learn benefits him.
I have watched Steven filmed a series numerous times already. He is always very considerate of the crew members and they in turn like to be around him. Before Steven gets into position, he will always discuss every minute details of his makeover with the responsible crew members. He learns a lot from their discussions, and now knows how to braid a Qing queue that is considered well done. Costume wise, he understands the appropriate ‘culture crane and martial tiger’ designs designated for various official robes. Also, applying basic make-up on himself does not faze him, even the more intricate drawing of the eyebrows, he can do it with much aplomb.

These days, with the help of the pros, Steven’s realistic makeovers now surpass those of the past. “As an actor, one has to have a realistic makeover for the screen character. I have acted in many ancient costume series, so now I'm very familiar on how to wear the different costumes properly. ” From not knowing how to fight initially to now doing a good job of it, Steven is very grateful to TVB martial arts instructors for their tutorage.

In Fighting Scenes, Stoic in Injuries

Through the years, he has acted in many period dramas, each drama requiring more fighting than the next. This slight-frame fellow - no one expected he could endure such arduousness. No matter which part of his body was injured, or which part was abraded, without a word Steven would just look for the antiseptic spray bottle and sprayed it on his wound, after which, he would then stand up, brush the dust off his clothes and said: “Mai Wai!” (Ready to roll!) The martial arts brotherhood, from initially disbelieving Steven would do the fighting himself to later believing he truly did not want a stuntman for his scenes, began to respect Steven's resilience and tenacity, and they have even become good friends now.

Tough Chew Chao man when sees the good will obstinately hold fast to it. The refined looking Steven, albeit a tough Chew Chao man with quite a temper, when sees the good will obstinately hold fast to it.

"My personality resembles my father’s. He doesn't talk much but he is very respectful to others and very responsible. If he made a promise to do something, he will get it done, no matter what.”

Steven learns from his father to take his work seriously, and to be respectful of other people. He respects his father even more for his faithfulness to his mother. (Steven's)

“Mother has passed over for 10 years now. His focus is now completely on us. Seeing his faithfulness to mother makes me believe in love. I believe that my parents loved each other very much. As a man, I naturally like being adored by a woman. I like having a lover who loves me only, and with whom I can share everything, even my work, I would like to discuss it with her."

Traditional Man yearns for a home.

During the past 6 years, Steven had a person accompanying him on his love journey. However, recently this love relationship is temporarily halted. But in Steven’s heart, this ex-girlfriend remains a good woman.

“My work right now is very hectic.  I can’t deal with these conflicted feelings just yet. Who knows, maybe one day, we might get back together again.”

Career oriented Steven, even though he has had plans to get married once past 30 something but year after year and now at 37, he is still single. “I, too, yearn for a home of my own, to have kids, best having a girl first, then a son. I believe an older sister will love her little brother…”

He smiles as his mind wanders off. Looks like if the time comes, he might even do a flash wedding.

Steven Ma, What’s The Time Over There?

The appointment was for 3 pm but Steven was already here by 2:45 pm.
He is often one step ahead of other people.
At age sixteen and a half he worked as a clerk in a publishing house.
At age 27 he moved his whole family from Sham Sui Po to a luxury home at Ho Man Tin.
Born in poverty, his way out & outlooks should have been gloomy, instead he shines brightly.
His mother battled cancer for 22 years; he had to beat time.
He toiled to get on stage, to stand under the limelight.
He founded a publishing company and owned a laundry shop.
Whatever he could do, he would do.
He shouldered everything himself, until like an oil lamp, the flame burned out.
He crashed and turned to drinking for solace, and suffered panic attacks.

“I thought I was strong, that I could take care of everything.”

Turn out, people should not only know to move forward,
but also to pace themselves for a long journey.
The road is winding and the nights, long.
But know this: the nights on this side of the earth are dawns on the other.

Steven moves fast, talks fast too. Within a few minutes, he is done with wardrobe, make-up, and now sits patiently for the interview to begin. He comes prepared, frequently earlier than his colleagues, which inevitably gives them pressure. Like earlier on when filming a Qing production, Sweetness in the Salt,  he was accused of being the male version of Wang Ah Jie (Liza Wang) with his multiple requests.  Actually, that wasn’t the first time it happened. A few years back, while filming the Change of Destiny with Benny Chan 陳浩民, he was rumored to have come up with a rule for fining latecomers for unpunctuality. Was he being too stringent?

“To shove the problem onto someone else is an easy way to shirk responsibility. Did I chastise someone for being late? Yes! But it’s not like I’ll scold you if you’re late for once. I feel everyone is allowed 3 strikes. But at the 4th strike, I will approach you, and face to face will ask you if you would please not be late anymore?

“I know people think I’m weird. Like what does other people’s work discipline got to with you? Time may change, but my set of principles will not change: be punctual, be responsible, and be grateful; and if these become old-fashioned, then let me be old-fashioned. I’ve been in this industry for 15 years. Even though, it’s tough to be a good person, and even though I’m like a bullseye target jabbed all over, but still those 15 years have come and passed, and I survive. Because ultimately, the entertainment industry is abundant with hardworking fellow colleagues.

“You think I didn’t know that some colleagues use the media to attack me? I know and I understand, but I’ll not do the same."

A man with high principles is a lonely man. But Steven is used to loneliness. “I’m a Chow Chew traditional man. When faced with problem, I will grit my teeth and bear it. When Steven was six years old, his mother was diagnosed with nose cancer. Only when he was a middle school student did he truly realize the scope of his mother’s pains. However, the more he empathized, the more helpless he felt. When sadness overwhelmed him, he would hide himself at a corner in his school, and cried. After which he would dry off his tears, and went home with a happy face. He did not want to add to his mother’s worries with his sadness.

Through the years, his mother’s cancer relapsed 3 times, destroying her senses of hearing, smelling and tasting.   “But she had never complained, and never gave up.”  His mother was a thin and fragile woman, but to Steven, she seemed like a giant. This wounded giant became his role model.

“During those years, I saw my father wholeheartedly taking care of my mother. I observed what an affectionate relationship was like. Recalling them, I believe there is such thing as everlasting, true love. I believe that happy and fulfilling marriages do exist.”

Steven’s father was a driver for No: 9 bus. He was the sole breadwinner for the whole family of seven. To lessen his father’s burden, Steven turned down his school offer to study designing in the science and engineering dept, upon his high school graduation.  “I was 16 and a half when I joined Long Man (朗文) publishing house as an office assistant. “

When his mother’s cancer relapsed, Steven had started his singing career. He vowed to give his mother a better life. He bought a luxury home at Ho Man Tin (何文田), and had his parents moved from a public housing single unit to a 1000 over square feet luxury home. He purchased the new home in July1999, but in the same month on the 21st, his mother passed away.

During the last month of her life, the cancer demon even took away her right eye’s vision and her ability to eat. So a tubing was surgically inserted into her stomach to feed her. Although the surgery was successful, his mother never woke up from it.

“I’ve always been strong. And thought that I could handle my emotions. But actually, I couldn’t.”

During his grieving period, his career took a sluggish turn, and then, there was the pressure of mortgage payments. He crashed.

“I’m never one to pour out my troubles to people, but I didn’t know how to take care of things then. I drank to drown my sorrows and to get high, and then I would sleep it off. But I suffered for it the very next day: hangover, ulcer, and intensified pressure.”

He depended on alcohol to relax himself, and pride himself on his ability to hold his liquor well. And that he has no cases of inebriation.

“When I was young, I felt very grown-up. And liked to act grown-up. Sometimes would drink with schoolmates. The only time I got drunk was when I was in middle school. Went to the park to guzzle beer with schoolmates. Only remembered drinking nonstop and woke up drunk on a street. Around 5 in the morning when I heard the traffic noise and people, only then did I collect my wits enough to go home. I used to work in a chemical company as a sales executive, which involved frequent trips to China. Those business entertainments required drinking, thus further boosting my liquor tolerance."

Thus, according to Steven, the peace he has now did not come easy. He likes to take risks, set up companies, operated a laundry shop, and founded a publishing company. He's not one for idling.

Years ago, his company, while undertaking the preparation of the concert, 輝黃演唱會, faced a liquidity crisis. It was cash strapped for an estimated HK$3 million. “Where can I come up with that much money in such a short time? I lay on bed, pondering. And finally came up with an “uncle” in Taiwan. When approached, he agreed unhesitatingly. I’m forever indebted to him. And the loan plus interest have since been paid off.”

His grief over his mom’s death, his anxiety over work; all these, he blithely brushed aside and affected a nonchalant front. Unwittingly, the more he put into his career, the more harm he piled onto himself. Until one day, his heartbeats sped up abnormally to about 150 beats per minute. He had to seek emergency care in the hospital. The diagnosis was an onslaught of a panic attacks. (TN: Recently, Steven was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition that causes abnormal heart palpitations. A surgery is required to permanently fix the problem. As such, his previously diagnosed “panic attacks” might have been due to his heart problem?) His doctor said his malady was due to his persistent suppression of his emotions. Once in Shanghai, he suffered an anxiety episode, so bad so that he requested a sick leave from the movie company; he was replaced by another actor.

“They were brought on by stress. Now, I know how to relax myself. I’m fine now. The spells have not recurred for a long time.”

He has been in the entertainment industry for 15 years; what he learned is that the life journey is long, to treasure the fleeting time, and to seize opportunities when available. His beginning was humble, but through hard work, he was able to surmount the social stratum. Since his formal schooling is limited; he has, for the past years, enrolled in a university taking up Chinese culture & history courses as independent study. However, what is more important is that he wishes to re-learn the arts of acting, starting afresh all the way back from square one.

“During my collaboration with Ken gor in AJCL, he pointed out that I lacked eye expressions, and so I practiced hard on expressing through my eyes. He said I was too self-conscious of being on stage as if under a spotlight, therefore, not absorbed enough in the character. Wayne Lai said my voice sound hollow / thin (錫聲), that real life voice would not sound that way, and that I should put more substance in my voice.

"15 years in this industry; this year is my start anew year.”

Male artistes do indeed have an advantage. Steven’s co-stars ranged from year past, such as Maggie Cheung to the present day, Linda Chung and Fala Chen. The fadans have changed a generation, but he remains a male-lead. The strength of a horse is said to be tested by the distance traveled, guess it applies here.

Time slips by stealthily. Come October this year, Steven will be 37 years old. Besides his rumored “Brokeback” relationship with his former manager, the only rumors he engendered were with Ada Choi, Sonija Kwok, and his wine business girlfriend, Hui Wai Ling.  His love life seems incredibly nonexistent, way too empty. A thirty something year old man – too virtuous or too unreal?

Nowadays, his contact with Sonija is limited to work only.
Steven has admired Ada but only as an artiste. He denies ever having a crush on her.
His rumors with red wine business woman, Hui Wai Ling, are at best, ambiguous.

I asked him if he admires Ada Choi.

“I’m not going to talk about this. But when you love somebody, you will be considerate of her/him. I’ve experienced having someone not pleased at seeing me; in this kind of situation, I think it’s best to remove myself from her sight.”

“Who is she?”

“Oh, I’m just giving an example.”

“But you said you’ve experienced it.”

“Hmm... Let’s not talk about it.”

A brick wall, summarily erected to block.

I used to think that Steven’s life puzzle lacks a corner piece, love.
But, is his love life truly lacking a page?
Or is it a page concealed?

Steven stayed in the hotel for half a day. At dusk came out with girlfriend Vivian (Hui Wai Ling 許慧玲). On the high alert, he and girlfriend came out one after the other.

Towards illness, Steven has deep thoughts. He was a victim of an illness "Panic Attack" four years ago. The symptoms of such an illness are sudden tightening of nerves, giddiness, freezing of limbs, trembling hands, breathing problems, abnormal heart palpitations. "The main cause comes from stress. If I cannot calm myself down or relax myself, and if I am always on the Get-Ready mode, the illness will relapse. These few months, I suffered relapses and once, I even had to stay home for 10 days. There was another time when I was posing for a magazine photoshot, my hand trembled nonstop suddenly and had to be rushed to the hospital."

Steven Ma, Sonija Kwok, Michael Tse, Susan Tse Suet Sum谢雪心 (note: a renowned HK Cantonese Opera artiste) and Dexter Young (note: son of renowned HK actress Connie Chan Bo Chu) did a full dress rehearsal for the theatrical play of “Tale of a Prince’s Revenge” (Hamlet) yesterday. The whole cast made an appearance in full stage make-up and costumes. After his make-up, an inner double eyelided Steven duly became triple eyelided. The makeup artist had deliberately magnified the size of his eyes ten-times, to which he had difficulty adapting all at once.

Ma Zai, who has had never worn stage makeup before, did a double take when he belatedly saw his 10 times enlarged eyes, shadowed nose, and outlined lips. The makeup artist explained that it had to be done this way, so that the audience seated on the 3rd floor can see his eyes, mouth and nose. Tomorrow is the play’s opening night. Besides having to get use to his makeup, Ma Zai can’t help but be a bit nervous. Every night at home after rehearsal, he would replay the recording of the day’s rehearsal to do a self-critique. He would only sleep when it almost daybreaks. He laughs: “Well, good thing about this thick make-up, it covers up my haggard looks from people.”

His performance is part of the Greater China Culture Global Association (GCCGA) charity fundraising drive; the opening night will consist mainly of dignitaries and celebrities. However, what pleases Ma Zai the most is that his alma mater has purchased 200 tickets for the show. Teachers and schoolmates will be there to support him.

Already at the eleventh hour, this morning Ma Zai still has to attend a TVB’s ceremony of hair shaving for his new Qing TV series. This will be his third time getting his head shaved but is not worried that his hair will not grow back. “After shaving, stubbles will sprout quickly enough. Every day as usual, I will wash my head, put on some hair protection, and pat some baby oil on it. This will protect the hair follicles.”

When he heard the show has plans to go on tours in China, if time permits, he would like to participate in them, too.

gist: The weather was hovering in the high 30s when Temptation troupe was out filming an on-location shoot on Mongkok streets. The troupe was hoping to get the job done swiftly and get out of there. But a crowd quickly gathered there. Liked being possessed by the god, Wong Dai Sing, Steven fulfilled all requests that came his way. He was overly friendly and accommodating to the bystanders; taking pictures with them, signing autographs and chatting with them. The reporter jibed that the only thing missing was the exchange of telephone numbers. One crew member got so exasperated he yelled out to Steven: "Stop stirring up the si nai lah, work can't get done lah." Well, can't really blame Steven, after all, the general public is his boss, and moreover, there are all kinds of people on Mongkok streets, if he did not do a good job entertaining them, who knows what kind of reception he would get from them, later.

Akazukin: It's good that Temptation is receiving more attention from the public and the reporter. And good to know that Steven is so popular with the housewives there still. I believe it's in Steven's character to entertain their plea because he is such friendly person to start with. If he can spend his free time to watch a remote colleague act and help him give some opinion, I don't see why he would ignore the street admirers so needing his attention.

Tamaya: Actually, I should replace 'chatted' with sinai ' to tease / to provoke / to stir up/ incite ' the sinai. I think these 'sinai' were mostly the bus load(s) of tourists from Sichuan and Heilongjiang. Steven is especially considerate to non local fans because 1) they might not have another chance to meet again since they live so far away, and 2) they came from afar, putting in long hours and distance just to see him. In AJCL promotional event, he especially picked out a Shanghai fan to get on stage to play just because of that. Might offend some local fans though, but there's logic in it. Guess his glasses are not prescribed, just cosmetic.
