Action Scenes Rely on Mutual Trust

Many years ago when shooting "A Change of Destiny" my right eye was injured by a horse, and quite seriously, too.  And this time while shooting an action scene in "Yuan Yang Pei" (鴛鴦佩), my left eye got hurt.  Haha, one left one right, now finally a match.  Luckily this time it was not too serious, just a little bit swollen and a small cut that is now scabbed over, most probably will not leave a scar.  This is considered lucky already.

Actually, having been in this industry for many years now, getting injured while filming action scenes is inevitable.  Especially when filming ancient wuxia dramas, the injury rate is even higher.  Guns, knives, swords, staffs, face to face combat, or wire suspension etc.; even if the martial arts supervisor had beforehand implemented all the safety precautionary measures, and had also meticulously and carefully scrutinized the choreography of each and every action and movement, and had the action rehearsed numerous times prior to filming, but accident being accident will still happen; it maybe that the other party made a small mistake or that I myself miscalculate, either way one or both parties will inadvertently get hurt at any given time.

Anyway,  a collaboration with martial arts brothers has this one particular characteristic, which is, the majority of them are straight-shooters, and under the premise of mutual trust, regardless of who accidentally injured who, they will all without hesitation utter "No problem" (沒事); this kind of mindset, I truly appreciate.

Despite Left Eye Injury Steven Ma Persisted Filming, Director Praises His Professionalism.

On May 20, Steven Ma while shooting a fighting scene for a mainland tv series, Yuan Yang Pei (鴛鴦佩) , in Hengdian got injured in the eye.  In the scene, he was singlehandedly fighting several martial artists when he unexpectedly got hit on the left eye with a prop hoe, the injury so painful his eye instantly teared up and shifted awry his contact lens inside his eye.  However, the on-site crew were unaware of the mishap. Meanwhile, not wanting to hinder the shooting progress, Steven, after hastily cleaning his hand with a wet wipe, dripped some eye drops into his eye to flush his contact lens, which he then removed from the eye, rinsed it with some eye solution and then put it right back on into his eye.  After a 10 minute or so break, he returned to position before the camera and was soon immersed in the scene. Later on, Director Wong Ka Fai posted a an entry on his weibo commending Steven's professionalism.

Steven expresses: "At the time, we were shooting a fighting scene. I singlehandedly had to fight with several martial artists.  In the brief chaos, one of the martial artists' prop hoe hit my left eye.  My contact lens instantly shifted awry causing the eye to tear up incessantly.  I understand it was just an accident. No one's to be blamed. Especially when shooting a fighting scene, injury is hard to avoid."

5/28 9:20 I finally became a double lidded eyed person

5/28 8:53 Good morning, yesterday when engaging in some action scene, my eye accidentally got hit. Waking up today indeed it had swollen up and quite painful too. So today can't do the daytime scenes. Hopefully will be able to resume my scenes tonight. Director, fellow actors and crew and staff members, truly am sorry for the inconveniences caused. Sorry!

Poor Steven got hit in the eye (left) yesterday when doing his action scene. Good thing it wasn't the right eye again that got hurt.   His fans were there when Steven got hit on the eye but he downplayed the incident then only putting eye drops to take over the stint on the eye and continued to work and between scenes chat to his visiting fans as if nothing happened. Guess overnight the eye swelled up and pain got worse hence having to reschedule his daytime scene because of an unsightly bruised eye.

Steven Ma fan visit May 26 2012 at Hengdian. Despite Steven's repeated admonitions to his little piggies not to bring him presents, the fans descended on him laden with presents for him.  As for that pair of bitter gourds, the fans had meant to bring along a water melon (re: Lai Fu's water melon hair style) but its size and weight posed some inconveniences hence the much downsized slim and slender bitter gourd (both gua - sai gua vs ku gua) and moreover, fans know that Steven himself loves to eat bitter gourd from their first dinner with him from previous visit.  lol! Guess the rain did not hamper little piggies' enthusiasm at seeing Steven.

Seeing him wearing a similar jacket, someone asks Steven if he buys similar clothes by the dozen. Steven says not by the dozen but 4 or 5 of the same clothing in different colors.  haha! 

Steven's next stops are: Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing.

Steven may have encountered some setbacks in his scripting project because of  weibo messages from his team members consoling him.  -- "Hope you'll feel better tomorrow." "No matter what we'll support you." ...something about regrets ..

Anyway, today 5/26 is his fan gathering at Hengdian.

Grand Piggy Ma Family Day
馬太豬家庭日
May 20th has a special meaning in mainland. 520 when spoken in Mandarin sounds like "wo ai ni" (tn: I love you), so every year May 20 becomes a day to express love.

520 is also the day I opened my weibo two years ago, (sic. 2010 April 3rd) so my fans and I have this arrangement that every year 520 will be the "Grand Piggy Ma Family Day"  (馬太豬家庭日).  On that day, I will interact with a group of little piggies on my weibo, be it idle chatting or sharing pictures, all done to thank them for their continual support to me.

Someone asks, why "Grand Piggy Ma" (馬太豬)?  Why am I "4th Brother"? They are called "Little Piggies"?  Very simple: My last name is Ma, zodiac is pig, and I'm the fourth in my family, and also likes to watch Pleasant Goat and Grey Wolf 喜羊羊與灰太狼).  This explanation, wonder if you all understand or not?

In a blink of an eye, Grand Piggy Ma house has now been established for two years already. I'm very thankful to each and every little piggy's support and encouragement for.all these years.  At the time when feeling tired or unhappy reading your messages is like a heart strengthening booster shot giving me energy to continue forging towards my ideals.

Little piggies, you all love me, and I too love you all, 520s!

Like I said Steven's Kangxi is one among the most beloved and memorable characters if not the most of all Steven's roles for his mainland fans.   The biggest reason being that Domd1998 is one of the  most aired TVB series on mainland tv stations.  

"Steven's Kang Xi is so beautiful that had he had a love interest in the series, guess she would drown in fans' spit cos' no way her beauty could match that of Kangxi's."

"His beauty can withstand copious scrutiny, like a youth stepping out from a ancient classic painting scroll, like a 仙童 (child attendant to an immortal) who stands at the side, still and quiet.  In his attentiveness, there is this air of nobility and flawlessness. His air of untainted beauty slowly overflowing, drifting and spreading to all 4 corners of the earth."

The fans laying their admiration for Steven's Kang Xi  a bit thick with flowery words but truly Steven's Kang Xi's beauty is pure and flawless.  And indeed looks as if he has stepped out from a classic ancient scroll.  I can see his KangXi's growth from a youth to a shrewd young Emperor.

This is what an actor most hope for -- a memorable character that can withstand time, especially a historical character that is inevitably matched up with the historical figure image.  Both his KangXi and Cao Ji have achieved that test of time.

5/21 23:00 Since it's not a monstrous wrong, find an excuse for that person then.  Curb one's anger at the same time letting that person able to get off the hook.  Why pushed that person against a wall only to let him/her go afterwards?  Truly no need to do that.  For everything, leave a space so when next meet again will not be so awkward .  Back and forth, to and fro, fate comes fate leaves. Don't dare to say I could do it but my mindset has already veered towards that direction.  Step by step, practicing to do just.  Friends, letting go will get back more in return. Uploader unexpectedly spotting Steven coming out from the public restroom snaps the above picture capturing that moment in time scene .  Another weiboan referring to the above photo says that the tourists went crazy at suddenly spotting Steven, and in their excitement caused a traffic jam at the restroom entrance. And that Steven was extremely cute and friendly, smiled and waved at the crowd as he quickly walked away.

A random weibo who was a bystander said this: Who ask him to go inside the restroom. You should have been there, those women screaming crazily and even chased after him. Even I on the side had on this silly smile and was excited too. Never thought I could get this excited at seeing a celebrity. The thing is is that he was so cute and warm.

The tourist crowd today was extra huge. Thank you for your on site cheering and support. Sorry I couldn't take picture with each and everyone of you.  The crew members had to do their duty and to prevent chaos had to keep everybody out, hope you all can understand that.  I thank you all for your enthusiastic support! P.S.  In this photo what was I doing to display such a posture? Steven said there were a lot of enthusiastic tourists at his filming site and a woman even stole a kiss from him. According to random weiboans, apart from her, there were other women who tried to kiss Steven. These days, mainland women have become so bold.

Anyway, the above pix makes me think of a crowd gathering outside a zoo cage laughing and pointing, and watching and taking pictures of the caged animal doing its antics to entertain them. I guess in the photo, Steven either pretended or was truly taken aback at suddenly seeing such a huge and roaring crowd outside the gate hollering his name. But of course as an artist, also inwardly gratified by their enthusiasm for him.

But beware, behind his mildness is a nerve of steel and determination.

rant start: (After his many, many "萌" photo uploads on weibo recently.) I just wish Steven would quit selling cuteness on his weibo, and quit taking up another 卖萌 role, instead take up a role that showcases him as a charismatic mature man, righteous or evil, doesn't matter, just not a cutesy man.  And yeah, have a lead actress of his own age group.  After all, he is already a 40 year old man, and should leave the cutesy poses and roles to younger men.  rant ends.

But I am most gratified that Steven continues to spread happiness and positiveness with people he comes in contact with.
