Apprentice Chef II Joyce Koi

2011/6/17 Joyce Koi complained about Steven Ma's Cooking Skill

The night before Joyce Koi was invited by good friend, Steven Ma, as the special guest in Apprentice Chef.  During the interview they opposed each other.  Steven revealed that he once invited Joyce to his house as guest.  He made a traditional stir fry tomatoes with eggs dish.  Who knew all he received from her was critique, and no praise. Steven said: "I used the traditional method to make this dish; used only sugar no ketchup.  But she insisted on me adding ketchup.  And also said my tomato eggs were not smooth enough.  So my face at that time turned black lo!  You requested me to cook so should respect my cooking style! "

After that Steven never cooked for her anymore.  Asked Joyce if she would cook for him, she laughed and said: "He will not eat my food!"  Steven admitted that he is quite chauvinistic as well as persistent and stubborn. But Joyce praised her good friend that though he is chauvinistic, Steven takes very good care of his female friends.  When Steven heard that, he laughed and said: "Right, I take very good care of the elderly and weak, the women and the children."

Joyce Koi and Steven are the best of friends for many years now since Better Halves. It was Joyce who fired up Steven's interest in the Cantonese Opera, and has over the years invited Steven numerous times as special guests in her concerts. Steven teasingly called Joyce his Gugu.

6/12/2011 23:10 Hahahaha!  Interesting......but, my dance steps were off!  Should be on 2、3、4 and 1!  Heehee! 應該是on 2、3、4 and 1才對!

Applaud Steven as an artiste not afraid to try out new arts and stuff, and not bad at it too. Steven showing off the sinuous grace of a dancer in this unlikely crossover of East meets West.   Honestly, quite weird.  The couple were all angst when wailing out Dai Lui Fa but went all distant and cold when dancing their 'hot' salsa number.  Gotta say, Steven does have a lissome and lithe body like a willowy snake.  haha!

Comparatively, video below is Steven and Joyce singing the classic Cantonese opera song, Dai Lui Fa - (one of their numerous duet renditions on stage usually performed for a fundraising charity tv show.)

2008 book fair to promote

Including this book, 圖文並謬,to date, Steven has published 5 books in all. Unlike the previous four which are co-authored with other writers, this is the very first book that was totally his own; he wrote the essays himself and the accompanying pictures are all taken by him.

Leung Choi Yuen, Susan Tse (谢雪心), ?, Mak Ling Ling (麦玲玲), Catherine Tsang (曾励珍), Helen Ma马海伦、张同祖, and not in pix, Mrs. Chiu (赵曾学韫)
with Joyce Koi

Because of his work, he took 3 years to compile all his essays, snatching time to write in between projects and filming. June 18 was the dateline to get the book published, so two months before the dateline, he took 2 months off from work to wrap up the materials for his book. What makes him so happy is that a Canadian woman had her daughter on her behest ordered 200 books and to have them distributed to various charity organizations and the libraries.

tn: This book provides superb insights into Steven's thoughts and beliefs.
Steven plans to have his 6 book published sometime next month. The book features healthy soups using medicinal and nourishing Chinese herbs.

Steven Ma attends Joyce Koi's Cantonese Opera

Translation on Steven's news portion
Last night, Steven attended the premiere of Joyce Koi's Cantonese Opera, 蝶海情僧 at Starlight Theater.   Steven said of course he would attend the premiere as a show of support to Joyce.  As to the opera will be touring different places in China, Steven laughed and said he knew only of the one in Beijing and that if he had the time he would attend it.  As a former student of Lung Guai Tin, Steven said he had stopped taking lessons on opera.  At that time, he was just learning the basic fundamentals, and that to be able to perform on stage will require long term practices.  But swarm with work as he is, he cannot afford the time to learn.  He said: "I learned the art because of my filming ancient series.  I learned some body movements, and some kung fu movement intricacies.  I thought they were difficult.  I don't have the qualification nor the courage to act on stage.  But if it is for charity then singing a piece of an act should be all right. Actually, Liza Wang and I did discuss about us doing an act but nothing came out of it."

2003 canto opera

October 12th 2003
source
With an interest all along in Cantonese Opera, Steven Ma became a student to Lung Koon Tin (龍貫天). After honing his skills for a while, Steven finally has a chance to tread the boards and he took part in a charity concert together with his teacher Master Lung and opera stars Joyce Koi and Ng Mei Ying. When he was partnering Joyce, they had a few scenes of comedy raising laughter from the audience. With this debut performance from Steven, he says that he was not nervous at all as he felt it was more like a party.

Steven was singing in aid of the Hong Kong Arthritis Fund and sung a few classic pieces with his co-stars, but he was not nervous at all. He said: "I was very serious about it, sleeping at half past ten last night and waking up at 10am this morning to practice, then drinking ash water to open my voice at lunchtime. I was not nervous because one is my teacher and the others are my friends who know me very well who will help me at the first instance if there is any flaw in my performance. Also, this is a charitable performance and the audience know I am a beginner so they will not expect much from me and it really feels like a party."

With Steven's description of a party feel, it is certainly not exaggerated because he created a few laughs together with Joyce Koi. When Steven was holding her hand to come out on stage, he suddenly said: "Your hand should be facing upwards!" Joyce explained: "I am used to playing the men's part!" When the four were singing together, Master Lung knelt down to let his lady sit on his thigh, but when it was Steven's turn, he mixed up his left and right legs and Joyce was forced to stand and making the audience laugh out loud.

Steven and Joyce have previously worked together on a TV series, but this is the first time they have co-operated in singing Cantonese opera and commenting on the performance of this newcomer, Joyce says he has done very well: "Singing Cantonese Opera is a lot more difficult than singing normal pop songs and I saw that Steven was sweating when he was singing the second song. However, for his first performance, it is certainly not bad."

2002 Sisters Magazine - Joyce Koi: Waiting for love

Steven's interview of Joyce as part of his "Women in Mazai's Eyes" column in the 2002 Sisters Magazine.

Joyce Koi 's 3rd time collaboration with HK Chinese orchestra

Tamaya@AF#542 Posted 16 June 2008 - 10:43 PM

[2008-05-29] Joyce Koi & Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra 3rd time collaboration to perfom in Hong Kong Cultural Center from 25/6/2008 - 29/6/2008. This is their 3rd time collaborating. Joyce invited her good friend, Steven Ma, to be her special guest for the concert. They will sing a Cantonese opera duet, Yesterday, they rehearsed their duet for the first time.

The week prior, Steven has had a stomach flu. He joked that during the rehearsal he felt like throwing up. Joyce quipped, "Did I make you feel like throwing up?" Still a month away from opening night, Joyce revealed that she, herself, had already started rehearsing, but that, Steven, because of his illness, just got started yesterday. This wasn't their first collaboration; they collaborated last year for stage performances held in Canada. At that time, they sang a Cantonese Opera duet. Accompanied by the Chinese orchestra, their duet went without a hitch during the actual performance.

2007 Steven Ma wishes Joyce Koi Happy Birthday

Steven gave Joyce a birthday red packing wishing her Happy Birthday, Gugu! And signed himself off as Guo Yi. Their affectionate addresses of each other harkens back to their friendship struck up during their collaboration in Better Halves in 2003.

******************************************
Their pet names came about because in June 1st 2003, Steven officially became Hong Kong renowned Cantonese opera master, Loong Gun Tin's  (龍貫天) student. After the teacher-student officiation tea ceremony, Steven and Master Loong invited the two leading female leads of Better Halves, Joyce Koi and Maggie Cheung to a midnight snack.  During the meal, they divulged their newly established teacher-student relationship.  Joyce was both happy and curious: "This is strange! How come a horse wander into here? Not even of the same stable, so why took up tutoring?"  Because Joyce and Loong are both students of 薛觉先 hence of the same level, Joyce insisted that Steven as student of Loong by opera status, would now have to address her as " 靓 (pretty) gugu", and he would  be "Guo Yi" and they would be the Insane/crazy/loony heroes (pun on Condor Heroes)「神经侠侣」 .

2007 Steven and Joyce Koi

vid source
Over Easter April 8th 2007, Steven and Joyce held a 2-show 《聲色藝情演唱會》concert at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, USA. (playlist) Later on April 11 they flew over to Toronto for a charitable fund raising concert at Humming Bird Center for 《寶濟細胞治療基金會》Steven was quite emotional when he sang 《明日天涯》.  Both Steven and Joyce were very satisfied with their 10 day trip holding 3 showings. Prior to that, they had been diligently practicing their dance routines for almost a month. Their practices were filled with many mishaps and missteps. Joyce usually acted the 'male' role in opera so during their dance rehearsal, by habit she unconsciously 'danced' the man's part. When asked about their mishaps in partnering, Steven said first of, Joyce's gestures and posture need to soften up to look more feminine and second, so used to being the 'man', Joyce unconsciously did the man's dance moves.  Because of his role in Steps, Steven was quite adept at handling the dance moves. They choreographed a waltz and a Latin dance to 《梁祝》and《帝女花》.  Cantonese opera master, 林家聲, who resided in Toronto also attended their concert to show his support. He said they gave a brilliant performance on stage. source
