SM Showing off newly crowned tooth and new shoes

2014-06-10 18:10  Wearing new shoes to welcome new tooth! I must promise myself to take good care of myself from now on. (especially my face. There is no parts of it that is completely whole [偷笑]) Can't let myself have any more accidents. ......heehee!

Note: Look at that youthful face. To think just a few days ago I complimented his masculine mature manly look, and today he reverts back to a sunshine bright smile boyish look.

News 2014-6-8 Steven Ma glued on fake tooth to attend event

Yesterday,  Steven Ma, as the event ambassador, attended the launching ceremony event of  "Support go green; break the Guinness World Records" (堅持綠色信念 踏破世界紀錄) to cheer on the cycling participants. The funds raised in this charity event will be donated to the Gansu province to build underground water cisterns for the residents. Steven said he greatly supports today's event as a good cause. Moreover, he himself is acquainted with quite a few local athletes and he understands it is not easy being one, that's why he's here to cheer them on.

Steven said he is a competent cyclist, he said: "I've a collapsible bike, sometimes when I'm free I ride my bike along Tolo highway. But I'm a careful biker; never crashed my bike, only crashed the glass door." His door crashing, head bumping and tooth chipping incident happened last week in a badminton court at Panyu, Guangdong, when he was there to play badminton with a group of mainland and Hong Kong badminton friends. After the game, in his hurry to get off the sauna-like badminton court for the air-conditioned lounge he accidentally ran smack into the glass door, not realizing it was close.  He said: "Actually I had a chipped tooth since eight years old until age 20 when I finally had the tooth crowned but for some reason that tooth got busted repeatedly. It will be fixed next week."

At the event Steven was supposed to sing but decided not to.  He said: "I can't sing today because my two front teeth right now are only a temporary glued on with adhesive. I worry the teeth may come off if I sing. Also, there are some words I can't enunciate properly when I sing. Even when I talk there is some lisping. Luckily I'm not filming a series right now so that won't be affected."

Because of this accident, Steven had to decline numerous interviews and advertisements. When asked if he is usually so careless?  He said: "Though outwardly I may look sharp, sometimes I'm actually quite careless. Both my eyes have been injured, my nose too, and now my mouth got busted. My whole face all got hurt one time or the other. Hopefully no more injury."

Steven out and about, chipped tooth notwithstanding

6月2日 21:22 Mid-Dragon Boat Festival night, at the Firefighter Training School playing night time badminton; my opponents are either current or retired firefighters who are badminton fans. Every one of them is ferocious, precise and powerful; totally exhilarating! p/s there's no clear glass doors here, so don't worry! Hahahaha!

Haha! No freaky chipped tooth is going to dampen Steven's irrepressible spirits. Good for him.

Weibo May 31 Steven accidentally bumped into a glass door

SM May 1 2014 20:26 Yao Yu Zai, my left right eyes got injured, nose got fractured, and now even my mouth got battered; neat and tidy, all set for a pig's head. [哈哈] [猪头] @枝Lam:[晕][晕] [晕] How many times now? Injured leg, injured eyes, and now injured forehead and front tooth too.. so, need to shed blood to be happy? (You're) a man who easily get hurt ya! I worry sooner or later you'll become a pig head [猪头] and then I won't recognize you! [猪头][猪头][猪头][偷笑][偷笑][偷笑][偷笑][偷笑][偷笑][偷笑]

SM June 1 2014 19:01What to do? Didn't you say you bring bad luck to your partners? [哈哈] I'm inflicted, and what's more, it has a staying power of a year or more.  In two months' time, I'll be safe. [哈哈][哈哈] Just kidding, only a minor accident! Don't worry! [爱你][爱你][爱你][爱你]  // @楊怡TaviaYeung  Old horse, how's your injury? Do you really dislike yourself that much? Why do you always have to bump your face against something? Ai... even at play, couldn't (you) be more careful ma? [可怜][可怜][可怜]

May 31 2014 23:38  Preserving this moment to remind myself to be wary of the 'door'* in the future or else... [顶]  [偷笑] (a pun on Cantonese 帶眼識人"to be wary of people")

May 31 2014 18:53 Went to mainland to play badminton with a group of badminton friends; should be a happy event but unexpectedly what is a common scene in comedy dramas actually happened to me...bumped against a glass door! Now my left temple has a goose egg and my front tooth is chipped!  This time...I'm truly so 'pig' (dumb)! But what I truly feel bad about is that this will affect some of the video shoots scheduled for the next few days. My advance apologies to each and every one of them.  I will take care of my injuries soonest and will fulfill all my work obligations when ready, much obliged!

The above images are cropped and uncredited because its link has since been deleted by its owner.  I uploaded these pix anyway to show the before and after pix of Steven.

Note: This is Steven's 3rd time having his tooth chipped. As is Steven's wont, he again laughed off his injuries, making self deprecating remarks on himself being so piggy etc.  Haiz, don't know what to say anymore. It must have hurt like hell when that accident happened. Hopefully that hard bump did not cause a head concussion. And incidentally this is the 3rd time he chipped his front tooth. Unlike other people laughing at his 'accident' I don't find that accident 'funny' at all given the extent of his injuries, and having read how painful it was the last time he chipped his front tooth.  "Mazai promptly felt an excruciating pain shooting right into him."

news-boyhood chipped tooth (1);  (2)
Around 6 to 7 years old, I fell off a bunk bed and caused a crack between my two front teeth, thus became a chipped tooth zai. Not until I was 21 years old did I finally have that fixed.

To protect him, one of the guards in shoving the audience away accidentally knocked the mike with his arm, causing the mike to smack against Mazai's front teeth, chipping them instantly. Mazai promptly felt an excruciating pain shooting right into him.

news 2012 April: Steven Ma talked about his 6 "Bo Lok"

On.cc video clip link

4th installment to Steven Ma's 5-piece interview with oriental daily 4/12/2012

无名小卒到一线小生 马浚伟谈6位伯乐助成功
马浚伟:珍姐见我就闹,好hurt!

Steven Ma: Whenever Zhan Jie Saw Me, She would Scold Me, I was Hurt!
Steven Ma, from a nameless nobody to today's first line siu sang, the whole process with its twists and turns has been most arduous.  However, among those six mentors or bo lok he spoke of, who at different phase  had given him much help, Catherine Tsang who loved (sek) him was actually also the one who scolded him the harshest!

The first person who turned  my life around was a singing teacher, Leung Yue Ling. In 1993 I competed in the 3rd Pioneer Laser Karaoke Singing Competition; Tai Si Chung was the chief judge. When I won the competition, Teacher Tai arranged for me to join a record company. During that time, I truly transformed from a housing estate resident to a singer.  After entering the industry, I was most grateful to have met Paco Wong (黄柏高), but I feel that I had let him down because at the time I had had the opportunity to sing a duet with Sally Yip, and Paco had secured Mark Lui as the producer for my albums, but unfortunately at that time I was still 'unformed'  therefore did not handle it well. Earlier, I partook a meal with Paco and the past was brought up, he said:"Those days you did not fully release your latent potential! But nowadays you are a first line siu sang leading in many series, so that's good!" I was moved by his words.

Record Company Wouldn't Renew Contract
My 3rd record released in 1995 did not generate a good result so the record company would not renew my contract. I was prepared to leave the music industry and resumed my past job as a 'plastic' salesman. But then at the pivotal point, Zhan Jie (TVB Director of Production, Catherine Tsang) told me to go for a screen test that landed me the role of Emperor Kangxi in the series, Duke of Mt. Deer 1998, which successfully transformed me into a TV actor. Though many people knew Zhan Jie loved (sek) me but unknown to them, whenever she saw me she would scold me. I was quite hurt inside, actually! When I was a youngster I accidentally chipped the front tooth and it was not untilI became a singer when Teacher Dai suggested to get it fixed. Although the outward appearance had improved it inadvertently affected my speech making me speak quite unnaturally.  Watching my series performance, Zhan Jie noticed that. She dragged me to face a mirror, all the time scolding me: "If you can't change that then quit la!" I knew it was because she cared about me so wanted me to improve; this indebtedness (恩情) is indelibly imprinted in my heart!

And there are two more to thank: Stephan Chan (TVB former General Manager) and Tsui Jie (Tsui Rong Rong, a former news journalist) . These two have also played a pivotal part in my acting career.

Steven Ma: I'm not Gay!

Steven Ma @ Mak Ling Ling Interview
translation credits: hyn5

M = Mak Ling Ling
 S = Steven Ma
magscan credit: Steven-ma.org

M: In the past, you were not under TVB management and not a son of TVB, but you still filmed a lot of series. According to what has be heard is that Catherine Tsang supports you. Is she very nice to you? (Does she favour you?)
S: I've signed TVB management for 4 years now! Everyone supports me. Mr. Chan (Stephen Chan) also supports me! Well, Catherine told me to film my first series. At that time, I've released three albums, and the third one was not selling. I've thought about retiring, but if it wasn't for Catherine in telling me to film series, there is a possibility that I'm not even in this business anymore.

M: Out of all the TVB executives, are you in best terms with Catherine?
S: Definitely! If some day that I don't work for TVB anymore, the one I would miss the most is Catherine. She is the one who have taught me and made me what I am today. After so many years of filming series, she yelled at me for so many years. Every time she will point out my flaws. She'll say, "What is with your expression? What are your lips doing?" Actually, to me, this is a good thing. I remember the only praise I got from her was in "A Journey Called Life". It was the scene where Fala Chen died. She phoned me and said, "Wow, real tears. You did well!" It is very difficult to receive her "You did well." It is almost every time that I see her that she'll give me pointers. My biggest problem is my lips because I was a "chipped-tooth" kid when I was young. I've gotten used to speaking with my lips sticking out. When I got that tooth replaced later, I still needed time to change that habit.

M:Do have supper with Catherine on a regular basis? Are you afraid that others might call you "shoe shiner"?
S :Occasionally I do, but I'm not afraid of what others call me. She is my teacher! (What about Stephen Chan?) On the other hand, I don't have suppers with Stephen, but rather we eat at TVB suppers. (What about Virginia Lok?) I've had supper with Miss Lok. There are times where we'll meet and talk about contract terms. Most importantly is that I film with heart, so I don't have to depend on these.

M: The feeling you give others is that you're very polite, very well-mannered, and a goodie guy. And the feeling is also a bit out-dated. You are always in the news for injuring yourself, and you don't have any rumours. The feeling you give others is very boring. What are you going to do?
S: You are correct. Many reporters tell me, "You are very boring!" But my close friends know how I am. My biggest interests are playing badminton, playing ping pong, taking pictures, surfing the web, reading books, writing, and drinking red wine.

M: Which is boring! Were you like this when you were young?
S: Before entering the business, I used to sell Chinese teaching books and industrial chemicals. To be exact, I've only had two other jobs.

M: Your lifestyle is rather boring; do you have any interesting childhood stories?
S: I don't find it boring. Because work wise, I still need to meet many people. From form 3, I started to sell ice cream at Tsim Sha Tsui. I remember Sheila Chan and Michelle Reis once bought ice cream from me. Wow! Sheila voice was very loud. She told me to add this and add that. I even said to them, "I recognize you guys. You two are Miss HKs!" At the time, I thought the two of them were very pretty. Michelle was very polite and Sheila's voice was very loud.

M: How many friends do you have in the industry?
S: I have many! Tavia Yeung (the people I've interviewed before are very good friends with Tavia Yeung!) Is she that popular? Maybe I should remove her. Ha ha! There's also Joyce Koi. We are very good friends. There is also Linda Chung, Kwok Fung, and Lam King Kong!

M: When you're filming, are you very serious and don't play with others?
S: No, I can play very crazily! But when I say "crazy" you may think it is very boring. Ha ha! I joke around with people. I'm a rather slow interactive type of person. I would only interact with the ones I feel that can be associates. If we are not associates, I will not force it. If were not happy, we won't see each other next time, and if were happy, we will naturally see each other again!

M: Are you a person that differentiates love and hate?
S: Yes. I don't want to deliberately say something to please others. Life it too short for these things. If we can be friends, then I'll make friends with them. Many people make the mistake by thinking that I'm very polite and I'm easily picked-on by others. But they are actually very wrong. It is my principles that make me have a good temperament.

M: Have you ever squeal with others?
S: I will not squeal, but I will argue. Luckily, I do not swear, but I'm scary when I get mad. Others will become silent. I speak loudly, so it is scary when I yell at others.

M: That is why there were reports saying you are troublesome and you at odds with Sonija Kwok.
S: That was a long time ago, so I don't remember law. She will be my new partner in my other series. We just went to Malaysia recently for promotional events. We were very happy.

M: Do you find yourself to be troublesome?
S: I don't find it. My principles will not be changed under any circumstances. My principles are being punctual, know your script, and don't play when filming. If these principles can be vacillated, then their/I'm not qualified to be an actor. I've yelled at people for doing these, and they will of course not like me. I don't need the entire world to like me, and for me to give up on my principles for the entire world is vain.

M: Have you ever fell in love with your partner?
S: When filming, yes. During the time when filming "Where the Legend Begins", Ada Choi absolutely made me feel the startled by a beauty feeling. During the filming process, I believed that I fell in love with that person. And personally, I admire her very much.

M: Did you ever take action and pursued her?
S: No, and then I filmed a different series quickly after that. My personality is most compatible with someone who is not from this industry. Although it may be difficult to control sometimes, but standing from my perspective, I think different sector groups would be better. I don't want my work life brought into my personal life. That is why I don't talk about the entertainment business with my family.

M: How many times have you dated?

S: (Dead air for 10 seconds as he counts) Four times the most. Three times. There is one that doesn't really count because the time was too short.

M: Any from the industry?
S: No, they are all from outside of the industry.

M: There were rumours about you being gay with your previous manager, Frankie Fan Chi Wing. Was that true?
S: Obviously not! I don't want to explain that much. I have dated my previous girlfriend for six years and all of my friends know it. And reporters even took pictures of us going on a vacation together.

M: Is it because you cover up your dating so well that people have this misunderstanding?
S: To be honest, I've never mind of my love life being exposed to the public, but there are a lot of people that don't know.

M: Are you dating now?
S: Just broke up in the beginning of the year.

M: Is it the one that Eunice Lam Yin Nei mentioned in her column? (red wine business woman girlfriend Vivian Hui Wei Ling for six years)
S: Yes, 我俾佢激死, I told her this in our conversations, and she wrote it out.

M: Didn't you say she (Vivian) was "okay" and you were thinking about getting married?
S: She's "okay" at this moment, I still think she is "okay".

M: If she's "okay", then how come you guys broke up?
S: You can't really explain these things. (Will you reunite?) We are still friends and she is a good girl.

M: What do you do on dates?
S: We stay at home and talk, drink red wine, and we sometimes go out and have dinner.

M: Nothing surprising?
S: I don't like surprises. I can give her happiness and warmth, but it's not romantic. Like Tavia says all the time, "I will not pick you for a boyfriend, but I will pick you for a husband!"

M: What type of girls do you like?
S: Actually, I don't look at the outer appearance. Most importantly is compatibility and as long as we can communicate. I like silence. I can't stand ones being too loud. I like girls who are more mature. I think my future half will definitely be older than myself.

Contract Renewed -updated with discussion

Contract renewal seesawed for a year; Successive intervention by higher management; Steven signed contract because of Stephen Chan’s 3 words.
續約拉鋸一年 高層相繼插手 馬浚偉因陳志雲三個字動筆

Last July, representing TVB, Virginia Lok initiated the contract renewal talks with Steven Ma, but both parties had not been able to reach a consensus, then. During that period, Catherine Tsang and Mr. Chan陳輝光 (Sir Run Run Shaw’s right hand man, Senior Advisor of TVB Administrative Office) had successively expressed their concerns over the situation. It was not until Stephen Chan struck the decisive note did Ma Zai finally sign the contract this week, after a year or more seesawing on its crucial terms and conditions.

“Actually, I’d already decided to leave TVB, and not renew my contract.”

From initially wanting to leave to finally happily staying put, Ma Zai speaks out for the first time, recounting in details the ups and downs, and the reversal of his thoughts during that period. His career is looking up; moreover, his love relationship is getting a new lift, too. “Recently, two masters (fortune tellers) incredibly told me the same thing – said that next year or the year after, I might get married. Maybe with an ex-flame or maybe with a love at first sight.”

In the midst of our animated conversation, Ma Zai, who rarely talked about the matter of the heart, unexpectedly bared it all, and openly divulged the real reasons for his breakup with his ex-girlfriend. The issue of Steven Ma’s contract renewal inexplicably engendered the personal involvement of several TVB VIPs. Even the male lead was taken aback by their interests.

“Of course, Zhan Jie has always been concerned about me. Earlier this year, Mr. Chan looked me up to discuss this matter. And then later came Stephen. Every one of them asked me why I still hadn’t signed the contract yet. Actually, I’d already decided to leave. I thought that Pu Songling would be my last TVB series.”

Ma Zai is the kind of tough-mentality guy who will not display a show of hand. Hence, even when entangled in a year’s long of contract renewal problems, he remained unflappable and showed no signs of being troubled.

“In these four years, there were of course good times and bad times. I don’t want to make myself unhappy, so might as well leave. And plan for the next stage of my career path.”

Ma Zai is TVB’s overseas market guarantee. His popularity in Mainland China is ever soaring. There have been already several management agencies beckoning him to their camp. And that as soon as his contract terminates, he would concentrate all his energy to “attack” the divine land. (China)

What made Ma Zai discontent with his lot? Was it because there was never any sign of him in TVB’s grand productions?

Mazai chipped teeth in concert

Steven Trivia Pursuit - unearthing old news
Singing with a mike around bodyguards can be risky for one's teeth and health!
Poor Steven! Getting hurt seems to be a day's work for him.

date:April 8, 2005
Mazai chipped teeth in concert.
马仔登台撞碎门牙

Steven Ma and Kenix Kwok held an Easter concert at Atlantic City, USA. Because their series had aired in both Canada and the US, their concert attracted a huge crowd of supporters, resulting in sold outs for both performances. The only hitch to the concert was when Mazai was hurt during his 2nd performance.

At that time, Mazai was singing Better Halves theme song. Accompanied by several security guards, he got off the stage to shake hands with the audience. Grasping the mike in his hand, he sang as the enthusiastic audience surrounded him. To protect him, one of the guards in shoving the audience away accidentally knocked the mike with his arm, causing the mike to smack against Mazai's front teeth, chipping them instantly. Mazai promptly felt an excruciating pain shooting right into him. So as not to affect his performance, he kept his cool until the end. He said: "I was in such pain that I felt woozy for a minute. I was worried that my mouth might become bloody. Luckily the roots of the teeth were not affected. So I sang through a mouth filled with blood. Even though the security guard was rough, Mazai did not blame him because it was an accident.

Afterwards, Mazai had considered going straight back to Hong Kong to see a dentist, but since he had already reserved tickets to visit NYC and to see Broadway shows, he had no choice but be a "chipped teeth leng zai" for two days. When he got done with his NYC trip, only then did he fly back to Hong Kong. Upon arrival, he immediately rushed to his good friend's dental office and though it was late at night, he had his teeth fixed immediately, thus enabling him to regain his leng zai appearance within a short period of time. He smiled wryly and said that stage performance got to be his most unforgettable experience since entering showbiz.
