Steven's best wishes to Linda on her marriage

Apparently, quite a few of Linda's artiste friends knew about her secret marriage to Jeremy including Steven himself. Turn out Linda not only told Steven of her secret marriage to Jeremy but also let him check out Jeremy in person too. Too bad Steven couldn't attend Linda's wedding ceremony held last Saturday in Vancouver, Canada due to filming commitments. Congratulations to Linda on her marriage!

When news first broke of Linda's flash marriage, a reporter contacted Steven about it. Steven tried covering it up for her at first but when told Linda herself had already publicly acknowledged her marriage, he said with alacrity: "Of course, I'm very happy for her. She actually invited me to her wedding but I can't go due to filming commitments. But earlier I've had a meal with her to celebrate. I'm very happy for her. Hope she'll be happy always"   source

Steven told the reporter that last year after Linda and Jeremy got married (12/25/2015) they flew back to Hong Kong. Linda especially called up Steven for a meal so that she could introduce her husband to Steven. (her goh goh). Apparently, Jeremy left a good impression on Steven at their first meeting. Steven said: "He's a doctor, not some fickle-minded player. We talked all night. From his words and demeanor, I sensed his stable personality. He seems like a practical and pragmatic person. CRHK Circles: Steven on Linda Chung

In my years in the entertainment circle, there are 3 younger sisters (miu) that I’m very fond of. (sek) First, I’ll talk about Linda Chung. My collaboration with Linda should be 6 times (tn: It's 5 not 6) Our first series is Virtue of Harmony.  Towards its conclusion, I was asked to participate in a 40 episode finale special edition. My character, Si Ji San, was added into the plot. And she is Hong Bak Lam. It was Ka Yan’s first series. When I first saw I thought to myself: Wah, how can someone be this docile (shun)? Be it her look or her mannerism, her speech or her whole attitude; she’s truly very obedient (guai) and docile (shun). There was one time, and I believe Ka Yan has already talked about it in CRHK Circles, but I’ll repeat a bit of it here. There was this one time after a shoot, we went to the cafeteria to get food. Seeing that she’s a newbie and still new to the environment, as senior, I went approached for a chat.  At that time, I made a very old-fashioned comment, which to this day, she still remembers.

I said: “Remember not to change. You can learn new stuff but don’t learn the bad.  I still can remember that scene very clearly, it was in the studio. A few years later, we collaborated again in a series called "A Journey Called Life". I portrayed a marathon runner, and she’s a MK slightly bad girl. And seeing her again, she truly had not changed much. Though her acting skill had improved greatly but her inner core had not changed. And after that we collaborated in many other series; in between: her health was failing, her moods depressing. I've experienced that with her, for quite a long period too, because every time she had issues she was always shooting a series with me, be it her health or her mood.

I’m very fond of her, (sek) and worry that she’ll get bullied by other people. Because she is so easy to bully. Her look, and that she doesn’t know how to say no. For some matter, she really couldn’t accept it but didn’t how to say no. So during those times, my Chew Chow male chauvinistic trait reared its head. What to do? You couldn’t say it so I said it for you. Like, if you don’t like it, go ahead and say no. We have human rights. As individual, we have a right to honor our own opinions and our own wishes; so long they don’t go against society laws or against social propriety. For health or self-dignity, there are things we need to insist on. Recently, I ate with her and she looked much happier. And I feel happy for her too. And I hope this sister, who worries me the most, will continue to maintain her happy outlook and continue to film good series. And if so fated we will collaborate again. Haha! Add oil! Ka Yan!

Linda Chung once contemplated suicide, grateful to Steven Ma for his support and encouragement.
9/13/2012 On.cc Yesterday Linda Chung in her interview revealed that because of filming series she has had a nervous breakdown, luckily she had older brother (gor gor) Steven Ma by her side constantly encouraging her enabling her to get through the difficult phase, as such, she is very grateful to Steven for his help.

Steven Ma, he is definitely the one person, since I entered the industry, who witnessed most completely my whole experience. He is the person who most understands every phase of my situation. Because my first series was with him. Virtue of Harmony. At that time, I was still naive and innocent, straightforward and simple young woman. When I first saw him it was like seeing my idol because prior to this, though I didn’t watch many tv series I listened to a lot of Hong Kong songs. At that time, I heard this song of his, (Linda hums the opening bars of the song and Steven’s song came on.) and listened to it often. When I saw him, I thought to myself, idol, oh dear, going to film with my idol. What am I to do? And so anyway, we were happy filming. One day, he and Tsui Jeh, a close older friend of his, and I had lunch together inside the studio.

As we ate, Steven said to me: Kayan, you are truly very ‘guai’ (good girl), very innocent. I really like your kind of attitude, it’s very rare in this industry, you must keep it that way.

I said: I know, I’ll work hard to keep it. I promise you I’ll not change my inner self.

And then after a break of two years (2007 May) we filmed another series together (A Journey Called Life). In that series, could see my person was becoming disheartened. I became increasingly unhappy. It’s like I’d been forced to fit in a colorful, exciting world whereas before I was used to a much smaller and simpler world. At that time I was already sliding toward a state of collapse. But that was just the beginning. (Steven’s song started playing) He saw that I was sick, unhappy and cried often. He often advised me I must love myself, and must voice out my opinions, and not to internalize everything and bottled it up. At that time, I didn’t listen to him because I was already on the onset of a nervous break down.

And then in our next series together, Ghost Writer (2009 Mar-Jun), I’d truly collapsed. For 3-1/2 to 4 months I could honestly say that I did not sleep a wink at all; I was a walking zombie. At this time, no matter what Steven said to me I could not take them in at all. I could only cry uncontrollably. I felt that this would surely be my last series. I couldn't do it anymore. I tend to over think, imbued with that wanting to die kind of feeling.   even contemplated suicide.

And then we did Daddy Good Deeds (2010 Aug-Oct), and he saw a happy Kayan. An awakening Kayan. And become happy again. But he was ever skeptical of my change of attitude. Because this older brother, (Ah Gor), for he is truly an older brother as he has witnessed my growth and he has much affection (sek) for me. In fact, he loves us three sisters: Fala, me, and Tavia. So that’s why whenever he and I met I would reassure him: “Ah Gor, I’m a big girl now, and I’m truly happy now.” He did not fully believe me. I remember one time he called me on the phone, and asked me if I was truly happy. “Yes!”; “Truly?” “Yes!” ; “Truly, truly?” “Yes, Yes!”, Truly, truly, truly, no?” “Yes, truly!” Initially, he was skeptical I've finally found my own brand of happiness. I guess he knew now that I've truly had a breakthrough in my thinking. After having been through so much and have grown more mature, I’ve changed.

Steven in my life, what I admire about him is that he is up-front, straightforward, and very protective of those he loves. He is also a very faithful man. I feel that if he meets people he feels deserving his affection, he will cherish them unconditionally with all his heart. Even if it is not his problem, he will stand up for you.

I remember that one time when filming AJCL, I was very sick but still insisted on going to work. I did not dare to ‘lam’ (collapsed/breakdown) or knew how to ‘lam’ or had the right to 'lam'. So I went to the studio even though I was extremely sick, and all I did was cried. (LC had in the past talked about her hour long crying jags in AJCL and in Ghost Writer. ) but still I would not dare go home. So everybody quietly came over to me and told me to please go home. I said I can’t do that. Because it was only my third year working, and I felt that I did not earn the right yet to collapse (lam). I was very timid and fearful. Out of the blue, Steven said in a loud voice: “I'll be the one who ‘collapsed' (lam) then. Kayan can go home.”

Steven Ma joined TVB 19 years ago as a singer turned actor, and later becoming TVB  first line siu sang. He has filmed countless tv series but has had few romantic rumors, however he has great affinity with Tavia Yeung, Fala Chen and Linda Chung, respectively. With his rich life experiences he occasionally counseled these three women and also tried to help them resolve their problems, and so by and by, he unconsciously took on the role of a big brother to them.  Starting today for 5 days consecutively, Steven will reconstruct his growth fragments to piece together his journey of singer turned actor,  and other details of his life.

Over the years at TVB, besides my three god sisters, Tavia, Fala and Linda, there are many other artists including Kenneth Ma who also called me 'Big Brother' but I get along better with Linda, Fala and Tavia, who I also collaborated the most with, and have the most fate with. I first met Linda in 2004 when she filmed her first tv series, Virtues of Harmony 2 《皆大歡喜》and at that time she was already playing a couple with me.  In 2007, Fala acted my younger sister in 'Steps' ,  and in 2009 Tavia collaborated with me in Sweetness in the Salt as a couple and we became acquainted.

Admit to be tight-lip and an Attentive Listener
Although we did not formally become god-siblings we do maintain a very good relationship. We chat often and I am more than willing to help them resolve their problems. I admit I am very tight-lip. When they talked to me I would just listen. And if I gave them advice I would just as quickly forget what I said. Once the younger sisters finished venting they would be ok! But if there is stuff they need me to resolve I would do my utmost to help them. I believe it is because of this that they let their guards down with me. My birthday earlier on last year, the three sisters all came to celebrate with me.

I once told them if they were ever bullied by anybody, they must speak up. I won't let anybody bully my three sisters! Although I'm no martial art expert but I can support and help, and would unhesitatingly lend a helping hand, this is my promise to them!

Praises Tavia for having a brotherhood feel
Actually, they all gave out a different feel to me. Tavia is a very independent woman, and among the three sisters has the least problems. I don't need to worry about her. She is a person who upon seeing me from afar would come running over to give me a hug. Personality wise, she is more tomboyish compare to the other two,  at the same time, more mature. Our relationship has a very brotherhood feel. haha! Athough we don't get to see each other often, I am still fond of her.

Fala is like a little girl when with me, and is also a very straightforward person, so much so she may even offend people unknowingly.  I've seen her relationship with reporter was not too good, her way of communicating was also quite odd.. so I as the big brother would advise her. For instance, her tone may not be all that appropriate,  so I would suggest to her to improve on how to express herself. Fortunately, she listened to me. I often remind her to do self-reflection because artists and the media are interrelated like lips and teeth, we should be mutually understanding of each other, and mutually supportive of each other.  In most things, don't be too overly stubborn! Recently, I've noticed Fala's improvement. Last week over the phone, I recounted my experiences to her; other people not necessary would accept your first reaction! Although being smooth and slick entails some fibbing,  which actually I can't accept, but I'll use a different method to handle this: I choose not to speak! That way, I don't have to lie.

Exhort to maintain a pure heart

I have known Linda the longest but she is actually the one I am most worried about. One time, she left a message on my weibo saying that she is a big girl now, but I still worried because Linda is truly too naive, too simple and can be easily bullied.  Working at TVB inside its 'greenhouse' protection, of course she is fine.  But if she works outside TVB then that is tough to say. Back when Linda just entered the industry, we were having lunch together and I exhorted her that learn whatever she wishes to learn but do not learn to become bad, do not do 'unclean' things.  Must maintain a clean and pure heart. Linda has been able to do that. And her acting have improved much, I feel very gratified.

Maybe because I am used to taking care of my real sisters at home, so my words may come across as old fashioned, a bit of a father feel. But I am lucky to have found three sisters that I both respect and care for, and vice verse.

Fala Chen's wish for an Older Brother is half-fulfilled
Fala Chen, whose personality Steven Ma says is straightforward, is full of praises for this god-brother of hers. As the only child, she admitted candidly that she once wanted so much to have an older brother. She laughingly said that her wish is now half fulfilled after coming to Hong Kong and getting to know Steven Ma. "When I acted in 'Steps' I was still a newbie. If he found this leng miu (youngster) lacking in anything...he would mention it, especially on how to conduct myself when handling interpersonal situations. In many situations he taught to be patient and to control my feelings. When faced with a situation, don't run off my mouth at the first instant. That could easily offend other people without even my knowing it. In this field, he has good affinity with people and has experienced much, so of course, I will listen to his opinions, at the same time, grateful to him for teaching me interpersonal skills.  I have also mentioned this older brother to my mother. Previously during Ghost Writer promotion, my mother came to Hong Kong to support me and she got to meet Steven. Even though we did not ceremoniously officiated our honorary sibling-hood but we keep up our relationship really well. We are sincere in our interactions. I know Ah Gor does not care much for ceremony."

4 close brothers
Steven besides having three beautiful god-sisters in the entertainment circle also has three very good brothers: Evergreen Mak, Dexter Young, and Lam King Kong, whom he has been friends for many years and often hang out outside work.  He expresses that their friendship is gradually accumulated over the years, and they are close like family.

"Evergreen and I have a very strong relationship. In 2002, we became acquainted when we filmed TVB 'Where the Legend Begins'. Dexter Young will get married in July (he registered last year) and of course he has invited me to his wedding banquet. During that time, I should be in Beijing filming another mainland China series but no matter what I will definite apply for leave to attend Dexter's wedding banquet, and also be part of bis groomsmen party. As for the other close friend he's Lam King Kong.  Not everybody may know about our friendship but people in the industry often always say "there's not true relationship in showbiz" . I think we have broken this saying. It could be that the people who said this have not encountered a true friend yet or maybe they are unwilling to hand out their heart to communicate with other people. Actually, artists are not necessarily "phonies".

TN: I would rather Steven stop talking about his 3 sisters, constantly. He comes across as a too overly fussy big brother but the truth is he's not their big brother. These 3 fadans are doing just fine in TVB unlike him. So who among them need protection?

Steven Ma: Linda is Like My Younger Sister.
Virtues of Harmony 2

VOH2 was Linda’s first series, I thought this woman (Linda) was very pretty, and a bit shy, very well-behaved (guai) and ingenuous.  During that time, I constantly had lunch with her to chitchat so that she would be more relax. I recall saying this to her: “This field is not all that complex. But opportunity always exists for something bad to happen. So in everything, one must put in efforts to learn from it. The most important thing is not to go down the wrong path. To this day, she still manages to walk the right path, and remains a good woman. (guai nui)

A Journey Called Life
She has matured, her acting skill has also improved, especially her emoting feelings has improved enormously. Our collaborations are mostly small productions, this series is no exception. The story content emulates real life's happenings. It talks about us being husband and wife. It was our second collaboration, but our real-like relationship seems to have gone a notch up, more like brother and sister. To this day, she still calls me ‘gor gor’.

A Watchdog’s Tale
We officially filmed a comedy series, laughter was constant. Also, our characters underwent a big change. I was crude and slovenly, a total uncouth man (malat zai). While she had on this short hair wig to portray a tomboy. Totally a Wu Jun lookalike. Haha! This series increased our tacit understanding of each other. I recall during the shooting, I commented that no series could possibly pose a problem to us because we already knew each other’s strengths and weaknesses so we could mutually compensate each other’s deficiency.

Ghost Writer
During this period Linda had serious insomnia, very tense all the time, and her skin was bad too. Plus the character in the series endured many grievances so that affected her moods too. Could see that it was a tough period for her. I was concerned for her. At the time, I constantly urged her to take rests, to do exercise because besides relieving stress, it can also affect the spirit.  After that, we filmed our own separate series, but we still kept in touch and I knew her situation underwent a positive turnaround. During Daddy Good Deeds, she seemed much more happier. At the last (DGD promo), she told me that she do aerobics once every week to keep fit. She seems to be in good spirits. I’m happy for her, and also feel more at ease (on lok) about her.

Steven’s Draw Something for Linda
There was this one scene that was shot at a jewelry store. During the break Linda was taken by a butterfly pendant and so for the first time in her life she bought a diamond pendant. She said she loves butterflies a lot and that whenever she sees one she would be very happy. I remember what she said, so today I especially drew a butterfly to make her happy.

Steven Ma: TVB should do some self- reflection.
The male lead in PSL (Ghost Writer) and also Linda’s most collaborated partner-in-crime and good friend, Steven Ma revealed that witnessing her tearful break down distressed him. “The main reason was due to exhaustion from over work. Too tiring! She’s always been very anxious about her work performance; she had to film series, cut records, and film movies at the same time; always insisted in doing them all perfectly. So bringing on constant insomnia. Her mother wasn’t here in Hong Kong, so I made Ching pu leung herbal tea and watercress soup for her, and also constantly chatted with her. But the most important thing is for her to get some rest….” Linda by nature is pliant so did not dare demur when given series projects to do.

Steven entreated: “TVB really needs to re-examine her workload arrangement! Although she is a tvb managed artiste but still management needs to properly plan her workload. Piling her with a heavy workload and having her doing it all is not necessarily a good thing. She has to be able to handle it. Have to see if 'xiu pang yao' (young friend) can even breathe first? Even if she can do it, she won’t look good (leng), and her voice won’t sound good either! Sooner or later, she will be wrung dried, her health neglected.”

馬浚偉 : I couldn't stop crying in that scene because On Boy was so pitiful. Also I remembered my own mother... thank you, Mr. Ka for merging On Boy and me into one. 

 賈偉南HK:回覆@幕后军师shirly: AJCL this kind of subject matter because of its topic being too plain and simple usually is very difficult to sell its story.  Luckily Zhan jeh insisted on doing a solid story that does not deliberately seek out audience's favors with sensationalism, and also suggested using tombstone as the occupation storyline.  As so AJCL was born. 

 

賈偉南HK:回复 @一厘米微蓝的blog : Hopefully in the future will have an opportunity. Actually there is one remake subject matter. Pre-modern series, two siu sangs and two fadns. Steven Ma+李學慶**+Fala Chen+Tavia. The characters very right for them to portray. If ask me to write I would truly recommend them. weibo link

賈偉南HK: The story is quite extremem. Steven because of love deliberately break up Tavia's happy family with 李學慶 (?)  thus creating next generation bad karma, thus squandered Fala's deep love for him.

Q: The themes for TVB series are usually directives from above, if your assignment was on some theme that you are not interested in, how do you handle it?

Every year we have a special conference. Every script editor will propose two ‘ideas’. Everybody will then discuss which one would have a higher possibility of being produced. And afterwards report to the higher up with our decision.  It is not always the person who came up with the original idea would be the one to write it, though it might be, so now can’t remember if the original idea is mine or not.

And the rest is parachuted from above telling you to do it. Even though it (subject) is not my request but can make it into something I like. After all, it is just a topic; it has no detailed story or mission. So I can take the topic and create it into some characters or things I like. Like the series: A Journey Called Life. At that time Zhan jeh (Catherine Tsang) &  Uncle Choi (Leung Choi Yuen) were brainstorming on what series to produce. At one point, Zhang Jeh looking up, saw a rock. And so she suggested we should use engraving tombstone as a storyline. When Uncle Choi and I heard that we were both shocked. (smile) because didn’t know how to write a story around a tombstone. So we just took the suggested topic and slept on it. At first I wanted to make AJCL a comedy and moreover, Uncle Choi was worried that tombstone, such a weighty topic, may make story background too somber, so we both thought to make it a comedy but Zhan jeh disagreed and vetoed that idea. After discussing we decided to center the story on real life people and make it a family oriented drama, a story totally without embellishment. During the creative process, we did not even think of the issue as to whether the story would attract the audience or not, so it was done rather relaxingly. And I was very happy writing this script because I did not have to especially write to please the audience. There were not much constraints put on it. I myself like this series very much. Of course, not completely satisfied because there is still some wrinkle in it. Initially there was this one scene that was created for the lead but on second thoughts, worried the lead could not comfortably perform it so changed that scene onto another character, but in the end still felt that this scene handled by the lead would be much more effective, and so all this changing around caused some abruptness in between scenes. Updated : In 11/14 news report, Linda says she supports both Steven and Wayne BUT her CASTED VOTE is for Wayne, not for Steven .

 Of his 3 sisters, Fala, Linda, Tavia, only Fala cast her vote for Steven.  I'm not surprised that Tavia supports Raymond Lam cuz she has always said she wants to win tv king and tv queen with him, but I am really surprised that Linda supports Wayne instead of Steven. WTH? In the past Linda has never once outwardly supported Steven for TV king, and now her outward support is again not for Steven but for Wayne whom she has never even worked with.  Well, my image of her took a nosedive.

Today is Steven Ma's birthday but he still need to shoot the wrap-up scene for his series, Prosperous Father. He jests that men at forty is a 'flower', and that his birthday wish is good health.  As to how he celebrated his birthday, he said: "Last night went to an Italian restaurant with Fala Chen, Tavia Yeung and Linda Chung to have dinner. Very seldom do I have Italian for birthday!"  Even though it's his birthday but he still picked up the tab, and spent over thousands of dollars to treat everybody to dinner. When asked if his girlfriend was there too, he laughed and said: "Anyway, there were lots of people, and we cut two birthday cakes."

Stevinda, what a good looking couple. Magnifying their photos, I was surprise to observe that the size of Steven's eyes is about the same as Linda.  And there I thought Steven's eyes were small.
