NEWS 2007 Hamlet news: Steven Ma Depressed, Brandished Sword; Michael Tse Alarmed.

馬浚偉抑鬱耍劍戥天華牙煙 - 24- 10- 2007
The Tale of The Prince’s Revenge, 王子復仇記co-starring Steven Ma and Sonija Kwok, will have 6 performances in the Cultural Center on Nov. 22nd through 25th . It held a press conference yesterday at Regal Hong Kong. Besides Steven and Sonija attending the function, the other cast members including Michael Tse, Yang Tian Jin, and Xie Xue Xin were present, too

Steven’s role in the show is Prince Huan. When asked if he feels any pressure during rehearsals, Steven smiles and says: “This character suffers depression, and has some mental problems. Frankly, I, myself go through some of those problems, too; so there isn’t much pressure on me. Everybody goes through some mood swings in life. It’s true when immersed in the role, my mood would dip. After rehearsal, it’s not physical fatigue, rather it’s mental exhaustion. (Are you worried you can’t extract yourself from your character?) All these years of acting, I’ve never being unable to extract myself. Just that the lines keep repeating in my head. Sometime, I became so mindless from memorizing the lines, totally oblivious to my surrounding. If I really have problems, I will seek out Big Sister Ming. (Lin Jian Ming)

Actually, what I worried most is the 3 minutes sword fighting scene with Michael, if not careful, at any moment, could be blinded by the other party.

Only Steven’s section is translated.

I've liked Steven for a long time now, have watched many of his series; all different characters, but always exuding freshness and naturalness. Duke of Mt. Deer is his earlier work. He had just started acting in tv series. Still very green around the edges. He himself had said he did not know how to act then. But what we see on screen is an extremely real and captivating Siu Yun Ji. I guess this is in part due to his own clean personality closely resembling young Hong Hei's then; therefore evoking a divine, dreamy kind of charisma that lured us.

Young Hong Hei’s shoulders carries a heavy burden of responsibilities, naturally ‘aging’ him beyond his real age. However, his juvenile’s spirit cannot be entirely suppressed. And Steven at the time, clean/pure and decent plus his greenness fitted the quality substance of 气质 of such a teen disposition. But resided inside him is righteousness that can erupt as kingly aggressiveness / forcefulness. Steven became Hong Hei, summarily transported into an ancient era to later transforming into a shrewd and enlightened emperor. Through a gesture, a smile, knitting of brows and bodily movements, he effortlessly and naturally brought forth a real life young Hong Hei before us.

Chin Ka Chun in Steps is quite similar to Chuen Ka Fuk in that he is not a typical serious, heroic protagonist but a regular joe (xiu yan mat) , and not a little bit frivolous, at that. Similarly clad in western suit, Chin Ka Chun differs from Tong Chi-Ko’s solid respectability. When I see Chin's wicked smile 坏笑, I almost swoon.

Tong Chi-Ko in TBOL exudes righteousness; suave and elegant he views evil as archenemy. He is also astute and resourceful. He is very responsible toward his family; tolerant and accommodating. He’s faithful to love yet not wishy-washy. A good man, a good big brother; a quintessential, classic tv series protagonist. This kind of character though good, can easily come across as being wooden and masklike. But his portrayal was convincing and very warm. (亲切)

Steven is truly like what he said, which is portraying each and every character with his heart. He invoked and fully portrayed his characters’ eccentricities and traits without contrivances and without overacting but with a natural fung lao (自然的风流)。He is a very 灵气 actor.

But, no matter how good Steven is, in the beginning, I truly didn’t want to fall in (be captured, to succumb). I’ve watched his interviews; I do not like the Hong Kong media noisy style. I didn’t want to fall into the pain of pursuing a star 追星, to live vicariously through that person’s ups and downs. Too tiring! (san fu) I struggled for a long time, finally it’s Steven’s own person that helped me choose. He’s a genuine and bighearted person. His eyes shine with enthusiasm for his work and passion for life, but without consumed by the pursuit of fame and wealth; all very sunshine (yong kwong)/ (open) and transparent /clear. And so I’m reassured. I know he understands the real meaning of life (living). Regardless of the ups and downs in his career, he will live life with optimism and sincerity.

This, is his off screen 自然风流

Steven's fn*
I just read the above article on baidu. I didn’t transfer the article here just because of her but because she seems to understand me quite well, especially this phrase: 自然風流. Haha! I accept it. So, besides thank you, also want to share. Hopefully, lout and you all would not mind! 4th Brother.

The Artist I Want to Commend!

Artistes, truly not easy to be! The ups and downs? B-listed stars? Tabloid fodders? Or efforts reaping no returns? Or perhaps, to be unwittingly submerged under a sea of people on this visual & aural journey, leaving behind only past efforts, or perhaps even nothing to show of their existence.

I disagree.

A person, if he/she has put into the efforts and did his/her best, the efforts will be noticed.

I remember one night while filming Steps, the whole shoot was done in Hei Yong Yong office set. The set had a reception area, which one must pass through to get to the work area. Because of the camera and shooting angles and technology purposes, that day we practically did the whole shot inside office area. And so the whole shooting process went fast and smoothly. Therefore, we all were very happy at doing good work simultaneously making good time.

But then, one of us cast noticed there was one such actress seated all the while in the reception area. Strange? That site was not included in the shooting, so why was there someone sitting there the whole time? At first I thought she was an hourly actress, and walked over to commend her professionalism for dutifully keeping her position although she knew she would not be in the scene. Not even a word of complaint or inquiry on her situation. That was very professional indeed! But when I saw her face, only then did I realize that she was one of our company managed artistes…my words left me right there and then. Wayne and I discussed with the director to shoot the last two scenes whereby Wayne and I would get off from the elevator to go by the reception area into the office. The director understood our request and was more than happy to oblige!

Also, when filming TGC2, she acted as one of the villagers. I noticed that she was always at the set on time, and that she acted out her character dutifully, even when there was no dialogue. Recently while filming SOL, although she had no dialogue scenes with me, she seriously discussed an acting problem with me, which I was happy to answer. She listened, then very politely thanked me, and left. Frankly, I don’t know her well but I appreciate this kind of people!

Don’t look for benefits/rewards? Such greatness? Put in another way, if look for returns/repayments, then should ask how much have I put in myself? Stuff that is too easily accomplished may not always be a good thing. A clear conscience does not always result in deserved harvest. But the efforts made are often more precious/valuable than those that fell from heaven. Which field of work? Doesn’t matter, they are all the same, anyway! If efforts already put in, then don’t ask! If efforts were never expended; even more so, no right to ask!

People do, heaven sees, but more than that, I believe some people also see! Chan Ga-Lou, pour oil! Ga yao! 人在做,天在看!但我更信,有人會看!

Tamaya: btw, Steven has updated his blog, the topic is 我要表揚的演員 his compliment on an unknown, bit actress for her dedication. It's a lengthy post, pix included.

The gist of it: He is praising an unknown, bit actress who is a tvb managed actress. He first noticed her when filming Steps inside the Hei Yong Yong co. set. Even thought she wasn't in the actual filming, she kept her position as the receptionist throughout the whole lengthy shooting. At first, Steven thought she was just an hourly actress, but found out that she was actually a tvb managed actress. He was impressed by her dedication. Together with Wayne, they persuaded the director to have their characters passed through the reception area to get to their respective office for the last 2 scenes. The latter was happy to oblige.

Then in TGC2, she was one of the villagers, and was always on time for work, and even if she did not have a dialogue part in the scenes, she was committed to her character. And in SOL, although she had no scenes with Steven, one night she especially approached him for advice on a scene of hers. Steven was happy to oblige. Steven says he doesn't know her well, but he appreciates this kind of dedicated people.  p/s I don't remember or recognize her at all.

Akazukin: tamaya, I'm interested on what's your opinion about this girl.

Tamaya:
After a second reading, this is my revised opinion on her.
Firstly, she is one lucky lady to be noticed by Steven.
From just reading Steven's entry, she might well be what Steven said, professional and dedicated to her work. But then again, she might just being clueless (therefore passive) of what to do on that day, (neglected as she was by everybody). What else could she do since she was presumably paid to be on call the whole day. Secondly, what struck me most is that Steven was nice enough to even notice her, let alone made an effort to especially include her in the shoot. What a guy! But I do have some questions concerning her 'dedication' to work.

Questions: Steven said she did not complaint nor made a fuss but did she even ask the director if it was necessary for her to sit behind the reception desk the whole day? If not necessary, did she ask if her time could be better used elsewhere? Seems to me her presence was a waste of human resources, energy and time. But then I heard filming a show requires a lot of waiting around for the thespians on call, even the leads.

But I suspect her needing Steven's advice on an acting problem is a just a way of getting his attention. But I do understand the importance of networking, especially in the entertainment world, so no problem with her initiating the contact. And I bet Steven is not unaware of his 'usefulness' to budding starlets. So there you go; my humble opinion. That being said, why did Steven pick her to commend? Because I'm sure, there are many more bit thespians just like her who are just if not more dedicated and hardworking. Hmm, curiouser and curiouser!

Akazukin: I have exactly the same thoughts with what you wrote, only that I could not have said it better myself.
Steven's kindness is definitely admirable, his caringness to his coworkers is also very admirable, but 害人之心不可有,防人之心不可無. Not saying that our "second" opinion would definitely be the truth, but there is definitely still such a possibility to guard against. After all, this is the entertainment world, one shouldn't trust one too easily.
"did she even ask the director if it was necessary for her to sit behind the reception desk the whole day? If not necessary, did she ask if her time could be better used elsewhere? Seems to me her presence was a waste of human resources, energy and time. But then I heard filming a show requires a lot of waiting around for the thespians on call, even the leads."
Having the habit of spotting exam questions, I guess we both do have high appreciation for efficiency.  clapclap
....Especially since she seems to be smart and proactive enough to ask acting tips from Steven.
Like you, I believe there are a lot of thespians who are being very dedicated and hardworking, and not only that, but also talented enough, yet they are not recognised by TVB. My mind came to think of Cheung Mei Ni who acted as Ying Yuet in SITS. That girl graduated at the same year as Tavia and Raymond, and she has better results than them during their acting class. Her talents were wasted by TVB until SITS. But it is not surprising seeing how long and hard Tavia have to work to get to the status she has today, while people of pageant background gets an easier shortcut path. I'm digressing... perhaps due to my lack of sleep these days.
I also don't have any recollection of her in Steps or in any series. I think I missed your initial opinion before your revision.
Tamaya: My initial reaction upon reading the entry was good for her, and that she must be one smart cookie to have gotten Steven's attention, and left it at that.

But have now replaced "smart cookie" with 'one lucky lady' during my translation process. Also have replaced 'smartness' with 'clueless' because I didn't see any smartness on her part. She sat there doing nothing? For how long? Why not spent that doing-nothing time to observe the ongoing filming, if not to absorb and learn something, at least to pass the time? Her passiveness and dutiful obedience bothered me...shows lack of initiative. That Steven noticed her is nothing of her doing or smartness, it's more because of who Steven is, an observant and empathetic person, therefore she was very lucky that by doing nothing she got noticed. But she was quick to latch onto Steven's goodwill and kind heart - but it's understandable that she would want to hit the iron while it's still hot.

Strawberry67: I totally agree with you on this. If she's good in acting, tvb would have given her better roles by now but i don't recall seeing her in any big roles. She's just lucky to be noticed by Steven.

Akazukin: I can't help but to find an inconsistency between her first "passive cluelessness" and her second "quick and proactive" approach to ask acting tips from him. In any case, I agree with you that it requires luck and Steven's observant and kind-hearted personality.

Tamaya: Going out on a limb and being very batgwa:
I guess once she got over her initial, newbie passive cluelessness, she was greatly encouraged by Steven's notice of her and therefore quick to take advantage of Steven's approachability and caring nature. What novice wouldn't when the handsome male lead showered such attention on oneself. Thus her quick (though not so quick, it was in Sol that she approached him) and proactive (translating the urge for attention to action?) pretext of wanting to redirect and regain Steven's attention on herself again.

Akazukin: What I mean is, she may not be as clueless as she seemed, just that she has found the opportunity yet at that moment, and one way, is to be different.

I maybe over-suspicious as I am very sensitive and suspicious (yeah, hard not to if you have seen a lot of betrayal/fakeness in life). I guess I would leave it at that since I don't know the real person. Not saying that she is definitely such a person but one should have more precaution.

As for her way of "dedication" in work, like you, I can't fully agree with the way she did it too.

When young!

As actors, especially me who made the switch halfway in my career path, for them to receive acting tutelage from the veterans is extremely hard to come by!  And I, have this good fortune indeed! Truly, comprehension is not always grasped through teaching you or telling you. Perhaps, Xiu Ma is blessed, because in every series I was always teamed up with good collaborators…hmm, maybe should say good teachers!

My thanks to them all for their inadvertent impartation on many things, and for their inadvertent tips on many things.  I am grateful, more than that, I’m moved. Now, they have all become my good friends; a relationship of mentorship and friendship; indescribable. P.S. Will not talk about female artistes today. This list of actors is not complete, and the names are written in no particular order.

Wayne Lai : Cheong Zai – a phenomenal actor
He is the first person to talk to me about the rhythm/pacing of acting.  Cheong….thanks!
Lon Goh (Joseph Lee Kok-long李國麟) analyses my acting mindset, and would always support or coordinate with my acting.  Sorry to cause you so much trouble! 辛苦了!
Fat Boss, no need to say more.  In any case, he was the person who enlightened me. So, what more can I say?

Dad, Kwok Fung, an indisputable phenomenal Big Boss who dares to change.  Not only has he taught me a lot but also very toHe has taught me a lot, and also very tolerant of me.  Thank you.. dad!

Ah Cheung (Cheung Chi-Kwong蔣志光) Perhaps, he might not recall that snatch of conversation he had with me but I will remember it always.  Next year “marathon” we run it together.

Strange!

Title: Strange! 奇怪!
Date: 2009-02-16 03:23

It’s very tiring to be a person, very tiring!
Clearly not wrong, yet have to suffer!
Clearly right, yet have to endure? Strange.
Fine, will treat it as erudition acquired from Teacher Tang’s book,
Or perhaps such is life!
Don’t misunderstand, I’m not depressed; on the contrary, it’s anger!
Mmm! Anger? What use is it?
I saw the wrong that I knew was right.  The more wrong it is, the more right it should be!
This should be the rule of law.
No black, no white! No yin, no yang!
These, fringed the dividing line, balancing the dividing line from both sides!
Vex! (fan!
煩!) Teacher’s advice; what I can do, how many of them can be mentioned in the same breath?
Vex! Just that – fan! (Fan, jiu shi fan!
煩,就是煩!)

Very touched that you all were so into Sits ad so serious in your viewing!
To understand Ji Yuen, very tough; to understand the inner world of Ji Yuen, tougher still!

But what's even more improbable is that the Sits audience could actually analyze his inner world and emotions so well. I…besides being grateful and moved, are truly lost for words!

That an actor, a character could so engage an audience's hearts to watch his performance with such intensity, what regrets could there be?

Thank you sincerely I thank you all!

What I can do is to continue to act with my heart in all series and to bring life to my characters. I believe this is my best repayment for your support and belief in me.

Thank you all for each of your words and each of its meaning. I'll store them in my heart.

Haha! Ji Yuen and I are very alike! I like this character because he is so like me! Since young until now, I've truly endured much! But then, so what? Life goes on, endurance continues. It has always been if I could endure, then I would endure. If couldn't? Still have to endure! Who knows? Who understands? Since it is how it is, who's to blame?

Could only blame that since young till now, I've had to confront many stuff. A man ma, if you don't shoulder it? Who would?

That's why, to be able to connect with similar characters or dissimilar characters (to his own personality)in a series, I'm always happy to do so; if only to fill a gap.

Those of you who cherish me, 疼我的你们 that's my personality; indomitable. 我就是这麼硬性子I've never look to my family or friends to share my burdens or worries, even when I couldn't endure, I'll still carry on! 得行! Don't worry! Mo Man Tai. 无问题! No problem!

Life is Capricious!

Life is really capricious!
Living, is it a blessing? Or is living the same as existence?
To me, living and existence are not the same!
Lately in Hong Kong there’ve been numerous traffic accidents;
many people unexpectedly passed away!
Frankly, I have no one religious belief. But this sense of helplessness is difficult to get rid of.
Since young, I have witnessed too many deaths! Sometimes, I really don’t want to see any more of it, but what to do, people have their destiny and heaven exerts its will. Why suddenly brought up this subject, there’s only one purpose, it’s hoping that you all, including myself, will in our living years or in your loved ones’ living years to give them a hug to let them know and feel they are being loved! I hope you don’t think I’m being too preachy to you all.

Taking advantage of these few days of New Year’s holidays, I browsed through several discussion forums to see what the viewers had to say about Sits.

Very happy; truly. I feel that everybody is very much into it, very engaged. This, is what we thespians most hoped for responses. I sincerely thank everybody.

In every series, every character; all characters carry with them their own antecedents, which when combined with the everyday occurrences will result in cause and consequence outcomes. I personally think that the characters in Sits are all very well delineated and very realistic. By ‘realistic’ I mean displaying human traits! Regardless of protagonists or antagonists, if their characters were acted to their fullest potential, the results would turn out great and full of drama.

Ji Yuen, Ting Hin and Sing Suet; three people who should not travel the same journey, but fate entangled them; is it tragedy? Or is it karma?

I still recall when filming this series, because of my total immersion in the story, I became Ji Yuen. During that period, I truly became very melancholy. I loved her but dare not and could not. I wasn’t good enough for her…those kinds of feelings were truly hard to bear. Facing Ting Hin, (he is truly a good person but afflicted with bad health); although a good friend, he is nevertheless in love with my own beloved. Before him, I feel unworthy and inferior.

Yee! Let’s not discuss this first; else I might accidentally give away the story.

By the way, on the discussion forums, some net friends while supporting us at the same time seem full of explosives. This is what we don’t wish to see happen. To have you all so engaged in watching our product is our blessing. But if to have you all so angry or unhappy on our behalf, that will only make us feel bad. Nowadays, with the economy in such a bad shape, people should all the more be more tolerant and considerate of each other. While there’s no need to sugarcoat your words, there is even less need for exchanges of harsh words. I believe it’s better this way!

Haha! Writing, writing, didn’t realize it’s so late already.
Will chat next time!

Awards, I’d like that. But before granted an award, must put in efforts first. As an actor, to receive approbation for one’s acting is what is most important and valuable. To this end, I'm still striving to achieve it. What I truly hope for is the approbation from the general public of my acting skill. However, encouragements are never too late!

A Prosperous Ox Year!

Gong hei fatt choy!
Here’s wishing everybody a prosperous and successful new year, health and happiness!
The Stars of Love will wrap up soon. Very happy to so successfully wrap up yet another project! My character is a fishmonger called Ci Yat Bou; nickname, Ci Yat Bo (Slowpoke). The character is very lovable but also quite pitiable, too. Why? You’ll see…

I know many friends are right now watching Sits. Let me tell you this, Nie Ji Yuen is one of my most loved characters. He enabled me to deviate from my usual acting course. Frankly speaking, to portray a character overwhelmed with guilt and burdens but unable to speak out, and is always walking the tightrope of justice, loyalty and love is truly very tough, at the same time, very challenging. I loved it. I hope you all will love it too. I hope those who have already watched Sits will leave your comments, opinions and reviews here, so as to enable me to better hone my acting skill down the road.

In March, I’ll start another series production. I will portray a renowned, historical scholar, Pu Songling (蒲松齡)

That’s it for now. Bye! Bye!
P.S. Enclosed is a picture of Ci Yat Bou at work. Not too bad, eh?

Why?

At this very moment, I feel so heartsick!

Why? Words are not necessary.
There’ve been so many natural disasters lately: Myanmar’s cyclone, Szechuan’s earthquake…just so hard to bear.

Why did they happen?
Why?

Seeing the victims, the survivors, the victims’ families and friends, and those who have lost their homes; I can’t stand it!
The TV evening news for the past few nights and the images on them devastated me; I can’t bear to watch them anymore.

I cried; too painful, truly too painful!

But, crying and anguish aside, one still needs to stand up and face the reality with courage!
Whenever I see another victim being rescued, I cheer!

Whatever happened has happened. Today on my blog I entreat all friends who did not suffer the catastrophe to please help out, whether through donating money or through efforts, whether it’s just a penny or a prayer; please, everyone, do whatever you can to wholeheartedly help out.

Also, from today onwards, I entreat all my fans to not waste money on getting gifts for me, even if it is just a stem of flower. Instead use the extra money to help our brothers and sisters! But of course, if you truly wish to give me something, write me a letter instead.

Today, to all the victims and their families and friends, I send them my best wishes and consolations.
Here’s hoping for peace on earth.
