Book 4 charges against me

2008-03-16 23:50

Hi everybody! Haven’t been here for a long time.

How’s everybody? I’m fine, don’t worry!

Just wrapped up Salt Traders, will take a 2-week break this month.

First, to recharge myself; second, to reorganize and prepare my pictorial journal which I plan to publish this year. Right now I have about 40 articles done, would have to write some 20 odd more. I plan to get this done during my time-off. Hopefully, it will go smoothly!

While going through my papers, I came across my 2006 essay entitled, “4 Big Charges”.

Haha! Recently, didn’t the tabloids charge me with committing “5 Big Crimes”? So when I happened on my past essay, I couldn’t help but laugh aloud…!

I’m not going to explain or rebut in here; only that in my mirth, I thought of sharing this “4 Big Charges” essay with you all.

Four Big Charges?
"四大罪狀" Written: 2006 -5 -18  Stars' Words (星語心聲)

Friends say my behavior is too overly calm and collected; sometimes coming across as aloofness. Friends say my lifestyle is too overly cautious; that this kind of lifestyle is way too monotonous. Friends say I’m too pragmatic in my approach to problems; that my words and deeds are incongruous to my age. Friends say my heart is too reserved; that I don’t ever share my innermost feelings. I accept each and every one of these opinions of me; but as to who’s right and who’s wrong, it’s all very subjective. With that in mind, let me then unreservedly reveal my innermost feelings here, so as to allay my friends’ incomprehension of me.

Say my behavior is too overly calm and collected. Why “overly”? What’s wrong with being calm and collected? As an adult, when confronting problems and feelings alike, all should be calmly analyzed and subsequently dealt with. To clearly analyze a situation, preconception and feelings must be put aside as well as partiality and self-interest, only then can one see the whole picture of the situation. In the process, the demeanor might be detached, but if that is considered aloofness, then so be it.

Say I’m too overly cautious? I see that as being self-disciplined. Friends love to tease me; that my personality is more suited to being a military personnel or to a career in the field of discipline work. I concede I do have my own set of principles such as: never be late for anything, never drink and drive; never touch pornography
, illicit drugs and gambling; never submit to extortion; respect Chinese traditional beliefs and subscribe to Chinese learned scholars’ philosophies, etc. So long they don’t intrude on others, I will persist with my set of disciplines. I’m happy as I am! Where’s the monotonousness? If this is considered overly cautious, then let me be it!

Say I handle problems too pragmatically, this may be true. In high school, I worked as a store clerk after school for 3 years. After graduation, I worked in sales for three different companies, These 7 years of valued experience made me worldly and helped honed my people skill. Later, I was fortunate to enter the entertainment industry whose fickleness also hastened my maturity. Perhaps these life experiences have overly ‘matured’ me in addition to my passion for reading and words. Sometimes without meaning to, I might come across like a old fashioned senior citizen.
老气横秋 but I didn’t mean to lecture. Friends, if you were offended, please do forgive me!

Say my heart is too reserved, unwilling to open up; this is a misunderstanding. I’m a person who likes straight talks with friends. To engage in heart-to-heart chats with friends is very enjoyable, regardless of whether the topic is pleasant or unpleasant; if we could speak our minds freely then I'm more than contented. However, for a heart-to-heart chat to happen; the timing, the people, the place and the ambience must come together for it to work. To listen or to talk about innermost feelings, all parties must be willing to do so, if not, then it defeats the purpose. Furthermore, why spoil a mood with sad talks?
When friends get together, it is not necessary to swap sad stories with teary eyes for it to be a heart-to-heart chat. Right?

Theatre performing is awesome!

Say performing, perhaps that’s not exactly correct, it’s still rehearsals for me; say performing? Way too soon yet.

It’s less than 20 days away from opening night. I’m getting more nervous, and also more excited.

The rehearsal has been ongoing for almost 2 months now. The details of its passage are impossible to put into words.

Bitter? Or Sweet? Happy? Or Worry? Difficult? Or Tough…all these and more can’t even begin to describe my feelings adequately!

Per theatre performance, I am but a novice.
Per Shakespeare, I am but a Han outsider.
Per Cultural Centre Theatre, it’s my very first on its stage floor.
To act the role of Prince Huan, I am, undoubtedly, truly lucky.

I heard most theatre actors considered the role of Hamlet as the biggest challenge, and also an honor!

Oh Heavens, I’ve but my TV acting experience, such as it is, with no formal acting training, at that; it’s my theatre performance debut, and yet I’m so lucky as to play the role of Hamlet; if this is not pure luck, then what is it?

I’m not being self-deprecating; but theatre and TV performances, despite some minor similarities, are worlds apart.

Moods interpretation? Emotion expressions, Body movements and posture? Positions and placements? Acoustics technology, all these skills, (maybe should say), all these notions depart greatly from what I had learned or understood before. Truly, given the short time period, I have had problems adjusting.

Maybe, this is Heaven’s gift to me.

I’ve never attended any acting classes, or studied acting fundamentals; perhaps, ‘The Tale of the Prince's Revenge', is the start of my new chapter, a portal key.

I’ve been in the entertainment circle for almost 15 years: I’ve learned a lot, but never too much, in fact, it’s never quite enough!

Acting is like studying; learning has no boundary. Given such an opportunity to learn, to perform, what else can I say or ask for?

I would like to thank the whole cast and crew of ‘The Tale of the Prince's Revenge', especially Director Mai, (Sir Mai/Teacher Mai Qiu) and Professor He Wen Hui.

Sir Mai, your open-mindedness, your acumen, and your passion for theatre all truly moved me! To be part of your show, and afloating on cloud nine, I’m beyond ecstatic.

Professor He, your expertise and erudition on Chinese culture and Chinese language have my utmost respect! It is such an honor to have known such an esteemed teacher like you. Hmm, compared to you, I’m like a mole hill to your Taishan, a water puddle to an ocean. Haha! You taught me to discard my school bag – here it goes! Heehee!

Of course, I want to once again thank the whole troupe of cast and crew members, how to thank? Hm.. how about in my next write-up, I’ll post their names alongside their pictures, ok? Haha!

P.S. What are my feelings at performing 'The Tale of the Prince's Revenge', let me just say this: “The feelings can't be expressed or shared in words, they have to be experienced."

Treasure Life – All Lives

2007-10-02 03:20

Life? It's very strange!

Some people, because of some unknown fears, gave up on life!
Some people, just so they could continue to see, to breathe, fight for life!

One lives, one dies? Who can control? Yet who can prevent?

Some people, because of youthful recklessness, created life!
Some people, because of regretful mistakes, injured life!

Life? Who decides? To give or to take?

So long as one still has a breath left, live life to the fullest, savor it!
When life is at its end, close the eyes in remembrance, go in peace!
Everything but everything is the will of Heaven!

Wish to stay, wish to leave? Don’t ask, don’t fret. It’s all what will be will be.
Perhaps, those who wish to leave shouldn’t! Wish to stay, then let them stay!
This, perhaps is life, predestined, but more so, it’s fate!

We should not exploit, or be exploited!

Like walking, the road is right in front of us.
To continue? To stop? It’s all in our hands!
To face life may be tough, but to flee from life is tougher still!

Why bother? Go, taste the nectar from the hardships!
Why do it? Go, experience the gains from the risks !

To have the courage to face life, more than anything else, makes it more meaningful!
*This essay is dedicated to the people of Myanmar (Burma), and to the people around me and ..to myself.

A few days after Steven posted his first piece on life, the media broke the news on his abnormal heart palpitation. The fans, upon reading the news flocked onto his blog to comfort him. The piece below is his response to his fans’ concern on his state of mind and health.

Thank you everyone for your response!

Why do I like to ponder on life?
Isn’t it tiring? Or boring?
Why ask why?

Negative? Pessimistic? – Not at all!
To ponder life, to question life, is depressing? gloomy? helpless? troubled?
Not at all!

It is: courage, to confront, to open up, and to be positive!
This, to me, is my way of treasuring, a kind of attitude!

Up to now, my encounters with birth, old age, illness and death, may not be numerous,

yet, they are not few.

Everytime, when I witness new life, I’m inspired!
Everytime, when an elder talks of the past, I listen attentively!
Everytime, when friends and relatives suffer illness, I feel helpless!
Everytime, when a life comes to a natural end, I'm resigned!
But all these do not change my attitude.

Life experiences make people stronger, more resilient! So, what is there to fear?
What is to fear are: apathy and indifference!
Why not: treasure, value, explore, and seek!
And strive together!

Thank You Fat Boss

I most happy to have met my first time collaborated Fei Lo Ban (Kent Cheng)!
No exaggeration here, truly none! I dare to say that Fat Boss is the best collaborated I have acted with since filming! Hmm… maybe I should say, among the actors I’ve met he is the one who is most willing to spend thoughts, efforts and time to act, to assist to teach a junior…ai, he doesn’t like people addressing him as ‘veteran’ (ching biu); so… will stick with calling him Fat Boss (Fei Lo Ban) then!

This is the reality ba! Appreciating a person or not?  Accepting a person or not? All based on a personal whim! Maybe some people may think he is too committed, too serious! Or maybe, feel that he is too opinionated, too unyielding!  But other people’s opinion I can’t control; what I see is an excellent actor; very committed, possessing an earnest attitude, and consider script and acting as part of his life; a good veteran, a good friend, and of course, a good teacher!

Truly, after collaborating with Fat Boss in A Journey Called Life, because of him, I have also changed!

Changed? Not only now changed, but during the months working together with Fat Boss, I imperceptibly and gradually changed!  Haha! Need to make sound so mystical.(玄)?  Right! Person to person, that kind of mutually interactive influences, that kind of lightning thunderbolt that instantaneously stirs up, activates and changes; totally unprepared and unexpected, that’s how mystical it was, very mystical!

Changed? How so, changed? The fact is, after encountering Fat Boss, I learned to persevere, persevere with my character in the series!

2007 Cute BB Chun Chun

可愛BB(俊俊)

This little cutie portrays my younger sister's baby son in A Journey called life. Even though he had only one scene but he's truly absolutely adorable!  He's called Chun Chun, only a year old! But don't know why for a baby, his eyes expression is so very steady, as if he's aware of the stuff happening around him! Maybe it is fate but as soon as he sees me, he smiles!  Seeing him, I truly wish to have a child of my own...
Maybe... I'm qualified now to be a dad...fantasizing...^v^.......!

Words for Chun Chun: Chun Chun, shooting this scene you don't know who we are, and don't know what we are doing.  When you were napping in the afternoon, I chatted with your mother, and found out this is your first time filming a series.  When she said that I told her it is very arduous to be a child actor, truly very arduous; especially tough to bear is the period between no longer a child but not yet an adult! You mother said she does not plan to let you be a child actor, that's good! Chun Chun, what kind of road you will travel, and how you would traverse it in the future is still unknown! Today, Ma Gor Gor sincerely wish you the best. Hope that the roads you travel in the future are all sturdy main roads. Also hope you will grow up big and strong, and be an upright and just person, a filial son to parents, and a man of honor contributing much to society!  Ma Gor Gor

Grit Your Teeth and Bear It !

2007-03-04 04:05

Haven’t been here for quite a while. How’s everybody? Here’s a belated best wishes greeting: Here’s hoping everyone is healthy and happy everyday!

I didn’t plan on updating my blog today, but I’d just finished watching some dvd, and since I’m still not tired, decided to get online. Only then did I realize that I’d not visited my ‘home’ for quite sometime!

Life’s profundity is that: it is difficult to grasp, and also difficult to foreseen!

Truly, who can penetrate life?

I don’t know, truly don’t know!

These past few days, things happened. Happy, unhappy? Like, dislike? Or perhaps smooth sailing, rough sailing?...all of them!

Sometimes, I felt compelled to look myself in the mirror and ask: What did I do wrong? Why does God keep testing me? Of course, I meant not just work related trials but, also, all sorts of trials and tribulations experienced in life journey!

I’ve always considered myself a traditional Chow Chew ‘real’ man: one shoulder supporting the weight of a home, the other upholding a piece of sky! Truth be told, even now, I still think that way! Maybe, this is just my one-track viewpoint, but this belief has sustained me.

But, sometimes, I feel so weary!

“Real” man? How to be one? Perhaps my father’s influence on me is truly too strong!

My father was a public transportation bus driver of 30 odd years. Since young till now, I have honestly never heard my father gripe about anything at all, or seen him displayed any nervousness or fear before me. Even when Mother passed away, he was calm. His conduct and demeanor had always made us feel calm and secure, that father was always there to take care of things.

Until that one day, the day I’ll always remember; the day of my mother’s funeral service. I distinctly remember that very minute when the coffin was about to be sealed, Father finally broke down in tears! At that time, my whole family, the relatives and good friends, all sobbed uncontrollably...except me, I didn’t dare to cry!

Didn’t dare? Hardly an exaggeration! Honestly, when even the master of the house could not hold back manly tears, which over the years I had never witnessed before, as the now self newly appointed man of the house, how could I dare cry?

Perhaps, you’ll laugh to think I over exaggerate, or that I over dramatize, but that was truly my irrefutable feelings of that moment, henceforth, forever imprinted indelibly in my heart!

Be that I was only pretending to be strong, or that I was actually weak; or question if I could truly hold on, or perhaps just putting on an act - So what if I was? That’s not important!

Anyway, I can hold on!

Don’t worry, I truly can hold on!

I remember when Mother passed away in the hospital, after completing the forms, we got into the car; the first song from the radio was Gigi Leung’s (梁詠琪) ‘Today’.

I will now share a section of the song's lyrics that touched me the most:

Farewell, still believe, if predestined we’ll meet again.
Meanwhile, please take good care of yourself
We parted at the best of times, please don’t cry,
let’s promise to meet on a certain year, a certain day, a certain place.
Zai Jian.

Outrageous!

說真的, 如果當時我在現場, 我一定會使出我生平所有絕學, 好好教訓這個「人渣」!*{雖然我不鼓勵以暴力解决問題}

Injury Blessing Occasion !

2006-11-15 18:26

Hi everybody, I’m home!

This November is truly unforgettable to me. What an “Injury Blessing Occasion” month. (Playing on the Chinese idiom “Double Blessings’ 双喜临门) But first, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all for your support and concern.  Thank you so very much, truly!

Did over a decade of filming; countless horseback riding scenes; too many to count!

I’d never been afraid of horses, or horseback riding, but of this kind of accident, it’s the first!

I remember when the accident happened, I was astride the horse. Heard the word, “action”, acting began. Suddenly, the horse flung back its head, and smacked hard onto the right side of my face. Instant darkness before my eyes. Now that I think back, I believe I must have passed out for about 3-5 seconds, for when I came to my senses, I found my hand pressed against my face. Excruciating pain followed. I remember saying these words, “I can’t hold on,” and proceeded to slip off the horse. Luckily, someone broke my fall and held on to me. (Later, I found out it was the director, my good friend, Sham Zai.) The crew hastily rushed me to the hospital.

Enroute to the hospital, I kept thinking: “Will I lose my right eye? What am I going to do if this eye can’t see?”

Then I thought: If I I’m blind in one eye, can I still act?
And I thought some more: Tomorrow is the award ceremony, how can I attend?

A plethora of questions flooded my mind!

The later details, I’m sure you all know from the media reports!

November 11th – the day of TVB Awards Ceremony; a milestone day in my acting career!

I, sporting an eye patch, accepted “My Most Favorite TV Male Character” award!

The news reported that I was ‘swallowing blood’ throughout the awards night, and ‘swallowing blood’ when receiving the award. They were all true!

Reported that my eyeball dropped 2 mm, that was true, too!
Reported that I was so happy I forgot my eye injury!
When I received my award, I was truly happy, so happy that I forgot many things!

I forgot…
That night, I actually used up 30 plus tissue packages! Don’t get the wrong idea, they were not for wiping tears, they’re for spitting out blood… a bit bloody..hehee. But it’s the truth, so pardon me!

I forgot….
When I accepted the award, I forgot to thank my family, my friends, and ….those who have been quietly and continuously supported me – all of you!

What’s more, I forgot …
To thank the bigger than life persona who had made it possible for my receiving this award ----Shang Zhi.

Not sure what else I forgot; well, to all those ‘forgots’, I would like to say: ‘sorry’ and ‘thank you’.

Well, I will now update on the condition of my eye injury.
My eye has become less swollen. The bloody dripping through the nose has all but gone. But because of a line fracture on the right side of my face, the eyeball has sunk slightly; but outwardly, it can’t be detected, therefore my looks is not affected; which means, I look the same as before. As for eye sight, because the flesh around the eye socket is still swollen, I have double visions when looking at certain angles. But, don’t you all worry, doctor says with some rest to avoid re-injury, the condition will get better.

Come early December, I will start shooting a new series!

This series centers around social dancing, a fresh idea! In the series, I will try out many new stuff, you all will like it!

Once again, thank you all for your concern, and am grateful for your support!

I will continue to work hard!!

Tribute to the Martial Arts Instructors

2006-09-17

In a TV series production, besides the producer, director and cast, there is also a large group of behind-the-scenes distinguished ‘ministers’ (gong san) participants before the series can be successfully completed!

Let’s put aside the section on editing and post production work; just within the video camera crew itself (outdoor set and studio set) there are the video cameraman, the video camera assistant, the lighting specialist, the audio specialist, FM, the stage manager, the prop manager and so on and so forth. And then, there is another huge group of colleagues such as the makeup artists, the hair & wardrobe artists, (generally known as the makeover artists) who help us artistes looked our best, and of course can’t forget to mention our very own image consultants and the whole group of scriptwriters and the coordinators colleagues, etc.

Just counting these people, their total number is not small.

Yet, there is still another group of behind-the-scenes heroes that I especially want to address; they are the ‘martial arts troupe’ brothers!

When making a series, thespians are frequently required to fight. In scenes that require risky or difficult moves, most times, the martial arts director will arrange for martial arts instructors to act as the body doubles for the thespians! Unless we have martial arts background or we are the so-called "red trousers” apprentices therefore capable of the moves; otherwise, to have us thespians do these risky or difficult moves, even working through the night until dawn, the shoot most probably will still not get done!

Actually, the people and the division of labor in the entire martial arts/stunt troupe are quite extensive. As far as I know, besides the martial arts instructors, assistant instructors, and the stuntmen, there are the ‘wire’ troupe, the ‘explosion’ troupe, the ‘racing cars stunts’ troupe etc. Anyway, whatever is needed will be there, and at all levels of difficulty.

Just that this group of behind-the-scenes heroes are sometimes truly ‘behind the scenes’.

The stuntmen faced difficult and risky moves everyday. Perhaps they have gotten used to it. To them: “Getting hurt is quite normal; bleeding is no big deal!” I do not exaggerate! Just within my short 10-year immersion in this industry, what I’ve seen and what I’ve heard, there’re too many to count! When a stuntman sometimes got hurt as my body double, I really felt bad. Because when the series aired, what the audience sees was me doing the powerful martial arts moves, not them. Which is why, deep in my heart, I always have this utmost respect and gratitude towards the martial arts/stunt troupe brothers!

Today, I write this entry to pay tribute to our group of stuntmen! And to upload some of their photos here, to let everyone get to know this group of ‘shed blood not tears’ group of ‘behind-the-scenes heroes’.

Encouragement to Nini

Please Give an Encouragement to Nini!
2006-09-01 00:11

Nini is a 15-year-old girl who is a chronic sufferer of lupus. Because of her pains from the disease, Nini suffers terribly and is very unhappy! So I hope all of you here will leave a message of support and encouragement to Nini. Wishing her to continue be brave in her battle against the disease demon. And to wish her speedy recovery of her health!

Thank you, everybody! P.S. Nini, this small photo of a xiu ma is my special gift to you. Hope you’ll like it.

Note: Knowing that Steven is her daughter’s idol, Nini’s mother wrote a letter to Steven telling him of her daughter’s admiration for him and of her disease, and to have him give Nini a bit of encouragement. And so Steven wrote that entry for her.

Purpose of Blog

2006-09-03 02:36

Actually, what I want to write today is my thoughts on this blog.
The reason for this blog, from the very onset carries only one thought….
which is, hopefully, be you my fans or not, blog friends or not, strangers or not,
that you all can freely chat on this blog. But more so, I hope through this medium
you can all relate to or share my very limited life experiences.

However, I want to stress this; my blog may be a bit dull.
But, that is the exact reason why I, Mazai, started this blog in the first place.
This is neither an entertainment blog nor a fans blog. This blog belongs to
a regular person called Ma Chun Wai, who wishes to use
the most advanced & convenient way of communicating
with strangers and friends, alike.

Mazai is very ordinary, truly ordinary; so, please…don’t put me on a pedestal.

Whatever we can share…let’s share ba!
Whatever we can experience…let’s experience ba!

But, brothers and sisters, I am just like you, only an ordinary person!
It’s always been that way! But, believe me, what I can do,
or perhaps, what I should do is all very simple.

So please…let’s all of us be a good and useful person.
Haha!!!! Now I've given people another chance to laugh at me lah!!
Laugh at me? So what? Haha!!!

My Dogs

2006-08-16 01:29

I really love dogs!
I recall when I was about 5 years old or so, an old lady neighbor gave us a dog! Its name was Xiu Lu, a newborn puppy born of a mongrel mother. Xiu Lu accompanied me for 6 years, and later because of the public housing rule against having a pet dog at home, parents were forced to give away Xiu Lu! That day I cried for half a day!
Later heard that Xiu Lu, not long after living in its new home,….died of illness! After that, I owned two more pet dogs; one was a mongrel, Xiu Hak; the other, a Pomeranian, Ah Ben!

Had Xiu Hak for less than even a year, because dogs were not allowed in the building, therefore, was forced to give it away to other people! Ben was the luckiest one. He was bought after we had moved, and lived with us for more than 10 years! But after 2001, when Ah Ben died of old age, I never had another dog again. First, no time to take care of it. Second, I’m afraid of going through the loss of yet another dog again; the feelings were awful! So, no matter where, if there are dogs around, I can’t resist playing with them! And dogs do not treat me like strangers at all, maybe because my body still retains a vestige of dog’s scent ba!

Dogs are truly men’s best friends; that I truly believe! If don’t love dogs or have no time to take care of them, please, do not have them! Also, once again I want to stress this: Dogs…are not for eating! People who eat dogs, please do some self-reflection!

P.S. the golden retriever was my partner in a causal clothing advertisement.

note: I'm a dog lover too. I used to own a golden retriever for 3 years before giving it away. About broke my heart too. Took me a long while to get over my loss. So I completely understand Steven's feelings.

Exercise good for everybody

Yeah!!!

Perhaps!

2006-07-29 04:45

I can’t sleep! Perhaps it is due to today’s society’s degeneration!
Perhaps it is due to today’s society’s depravity!

Whatever it is, what pained me is society’s so called permissiveness.
Also abhor society’s so-called understanding!

Humans, from the very beginning should take responsibility for their own actions!
How come? Some people can get off the right path yet still be so blithe and carefree?
How come? Some people though law-abiding, yet still be heart sick? (heart pierced by 1000 arrows)

Perhaps, this is life! But, besides sighing, why not learn from Teacher Tang?
Ask heaven ask earth ask life
Why not first ask one self what one has or not has done, only then ask why?

I’m Truly Upset!

2006-07-28 16:59

Saw the recent news about the 13-year-old girl who died of drug overdose.  I was truly upset!

Only 13 years old, of all the things to fool around, play with drugs?

I really want to condemn those drug pusher scumbags! Those young people, still in their teens, still unworldly, their child-like aura still clinging to them, were so unlucky to have met these bad people.  And so, the worst tragedy happened… their short lives were cut short!   If asked, was that girl at fault?  My answer is: Yes!Her fault was to trust people indiscriminately.  To satisfy her curiosity and looking for a rush, she sacrificed her precious life!

But her fault pales against those greedy and ruthless evil demons that will do anything for money, and treat lives like dirt! These so-called humans exploit young people’s ignorance and innocence for evil profits, and regard laws and order and lives as nothing!   In their eyes, other people’s lives are worth nothing!

I am truly angry!  Our police, our government, shouldn’t they wake up to the situation??
With all due respect, no matter how chaotic the society is, let us adults carry the burden!   Right or wrong?  Let us take the consequences! But please, do not ambush the young ones!  No justification or cause can rebut this plea!

Anyway, exploiting innocent and ignorant hearts for criminal act is intolerable! Herein, I would like to send my condolences and best wishes to that girl’s parents.   And to wish that little girl RIP and to live her next life well.

Burned face

Book - Loh Fung

Loh Fung (老馮)
Because of music album promotional work, I once lived in Taiwan. Taiwan’s land is big and its population, huge; and it has a plethora of TV stations, radio stations and print media to boot. From Taipei to Kaoshiung, I worked nonstop in all big and small promotional activities. Thus, the trip turned into a half year stay in Taiwan. During this half year period I made many friends, learned the Taiwanese way of life, and experienced Taiwan’s local customs and practices. And of course, I learned to speak Mandarin.

What is the difference between Taiwan Mandarin and China Mandarin? Not going to go into it. But during that period I learned one particular phrase, a phrase that was often heard within the entertainment circle.

“Give you convenience (方便fang bian), you treat it casually.” (隨便sui bian) (給你方便﹐你當隨便) This phrase is very interesting. Be it uttered in Cantonese or in Mandarin, it is very flavorful. Its flavor stems from its plain and simple words and also, its analogy is regularly seen in everyday living. If requiring me to further elaborate on this phrase, then it is the Cantonese counterpart expression, “Loh Fung” (老馮) ba!

In my everyday life, “Loh Fung” did indeed appear frequently. As an example: I live in a resident complex that has tight security. As such, unregistered vehicles are not permitted entry. Because of my work, I often got picked by different vehicles at the building. The building supervisor knew of this transport arrangement hence grudgingly permitted the vehicles to enter the parking lot. By and by, this admission became a practice.

I recalled once, a new colleague drove his car to pick me up, and it just happened that the building supervisor at duty was a new employee. Both were strangers to each other, and neither had had previous ‘experiences’. The supervisor duly followed the proper procedures, and had my new colleague wait for me outside the building.

When I got downstairs, the supervisor politely reminded me that unregistered vehicles were not allowed entry, only then did I realize yeah that’s right! The previous practice was actually against the building rules. It was actually a convenience given me by other people but I had unduly taken it for granted! Feeling bad, I apologized to the supervisor. When I got into the car I told my colleague to wait for me outside at the building entrance from now on.

Truly, many of those little conveniences (方便) in everyday life are granted us by other people. If these conveniences (方便) are used casually as we please, (隨便) they may cause inconveniences (不方便) to other people. Henceforth, I learn not to casually (隨便) take other people’s conveniences 方便, even more so, not to casually (隨便) turn these favors/conveniences 方便into entitlements.

2003 Steven Ma as "Caring Ambassador"

Steven Ma as "Caring Ambassador"
September 6, 2003
Steven Ma took part in his capacity as "Caring Ambassador" in an event yesterday and revealed that with his contract with TVB up at the end of the year, this is now in the hands of his management company to discuss the renewal, but he will soon be filming some series on the mainland soon, so it will be next year at the earliest before he will be back filming with TVB.

Recently there have been many returning male leads, such as Patrick Tam, Michael Tao and Sunny Chan, is he worried about losing his position? Steven replies: "I'm not worried, because every male artist has their own personality and will not affect each other and anyway we are all good friends. The most important things is to have your own way of performing so I will not be too worried."

SM: Promotion of mandarin album in China

On Steven Ma's earlier tour of China, a rushed schedule and a great atmosphere was guaranteed, but to gain some more memories of this trip, he braved the rain in Xian as he looked around the night markets because he was trying to find his ancestral roots.

Talking of these lovely memories, Steven starts by talking of some regrets on the tour: "I thought that in going to six places, I would definitely have a chance to see the sights but the schedule was so tight that I didn't have any time to look around and the most annoying thing was not being able to see the Terracotta Warriors in Xian, but luckily I got to take a look around the night markets, otherwise it would have really been a great shame."

Steven reckons that to understand the customs and traditions of a place, just staying at a top class places is not enough, you have to check out the street side stalls before you can say you know a place, so with each place that he went to, he asked to take a look around the stalls on the streets but because of time constraints, he didn't get his wish until he arrived at Xian. Talking of this night time tour, Steven says quite excitedly: "The night market is in the streets behind the clock tower and is very famous there. As soon as I entered, I found a stall selling 'Ma Family Noodles' as it turns out there are a lot of people with the surname Ma in Xian who come from Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia. When at school, my teacher once told me that the Ma surname originates from Inner Mongolia, it looks like I have finally found my ancestral roots, so I have arranged with my record company that for the next mainland tour, I will go to Inner Mongolia as well."

In the night market Steven also tried a variety of foods, including peanuts and 8-treasure sweetcake. However the biggest impression was left by the streetside hotpots, because he saw that many people didn't care about the cars driving past on the road and still had a hotpot in the open streets and even Westerners were using a basin for a pot and boiling away on the streets. Liking his food, Steven look on with his mouth watering, but he wasn't allowed to try by the crew on the grounds of hygiene and headed off to a Mutton Kebab restaurant instead.

As well as the stop at Xian, Steven also went to Kaifeng and tried some soup dumplings from a restaurant of a hundred year history and in Zhengzhou as well as attending the Kwan Kung temple, he saw some mini quad bikes that some children were playing on and handed over his 3 Yuan rental to take a spin himself. Later he headed to Shaolin to practise Kung Fu with some young monks as he summarises how much fun he has on his tour, but there was something that he missed out on. Steven smiles: "I want to buy an apartment in Shanghai and originally I had planned to go and take a look, but I didn't have enough time in the end so will have to leave it until next time. I am confident that my wish to buy property in Shanghai will come true, in fact my biggest wish is to have property in each of China's provinces, so hopefully one day I will reach this."

Steven's news on August 22, 2003
Steven Ma has now completed his promotional tour of China for his first Mandarin album, having visited six cities including Zhuhai, Beijing, Tianjun, Xian, Shanghai and Zhengzhou. At each place was held fans meetings and album signings as well as an interview with the local media.

The happiest thing for Steven on this tour was to find that many of his television series have been aired in many different areas of China, so as he arrived at each place, the fans would refer to him with different character names. For example in the North where they have just aired "Healing Hands" and "Duke of Mount Deer" they are referring to him as "Xiao Xuanzi", because his series have gone down well with the local viewers the record has sold extremely well and together with the proposed airing of his series "Where the Legend Begins" in Shanghai in September, this has all contributed to his confidence in the distribution and he is now working on promoting a second Mandarin album on the Mainland. There will be a whole new image for his audience in his new album.

The tour has been very tightly scheduled and at the first five places there was little time for him to look around, but at the last stop Zhenzhou, after he finished his work, Steven decided to stay for a couple more days to do some sightseeing. Steven first went to Kaifeng to try their famous soup dumplings and see the Shrine of Judge Bao. He also visited the ancient historical imperial temple "Dashang Imperial Temple" to look around and request a blessing for his family.

Steven's News on September 4, 2003
Steven Ma has been busy recently, after returning to Hong Kong from his mainland tour, he has been invited to take part in a DJ contest in Guangzhou as a guest performer and judge. Steven feels he does not have much stage work experience so he felt the pressure in this show. He says: "I had to choose a winner from the 16 contestants but their standard was so high it was quite difficult to choose." However he says that he made a small blunder when he gave the points because he thought that the highest mark was 20, but when he looked at the other judge's scorecards, he found that they were much higher than his before he realised that the top mark was 40. Luckily it made no difference to the result apart from bringing the average mark down.

On stage, Steven performed two songs and received a warm reception from the audience and he wanted to shake hands with some of his enthusiastic fans, but as he stepped forward, he was stopped by the security guards. He says that he had some good news on this trip in that his show "Better Halves" had great ratings in Guangzhou and the sub-theme that he sings "Love held by a string" inspired the local radio station to have a section in a program by the same name that helps bring together men and women on the air. This has been very successful and brought together some couples. Suddenly becoming a modern matchmaker in this way, Steven was very happy indeed.

2003 SM:Mandarin cd album promo in China

 August 13, 2003
[Ta Kung Pao]
Steven Ma continues his promotional tour for his new album "Romantic Vacation" in China, having visited Zhuhai and proceeding to Beijing, Tianjun and Xian.

Wherever Steven goes he is well accepted by his fans because his TV series "Luk Ding Gei" (Duke of Mount Deer) and "Gung See Luen Si Dor" (In the Realm of Success) have been very popular on the mainland gaining him many fans.

In Tianjun, Steven met with over a thousand fans and the event was very lively. As he performed there were constant gifts of flowers and kisses and he had a special visit from two members of the National Volleyball Champions Team - Lu Chao and Yang Jie, who came along to show their support. In Tianjun's Balitai Audio-Visual store, there were queues for three hours before his appearance and those who couldn't enter pretended to be press or workers to try and get in. Some fans were very emotional and there was some chaos at one point with Steven needing to be escorted out by security.

As well as meeting with his fans, Steven was also interviewed by the local press. He mentioned that in Hong Kong, the nickname the fans give him is "Ma Jai", but on the mainland, he is referred to as "Wai Gor" [Viagra] and Steven can only look on helplessly as the fans and even the interviewers call out to him as "Wai Gor".

Steven Ma has been promoting his new Mandarin Album "Romantic Holiday" in Zhuhai in China to a crowd of 8000 fans from all around who want to see his performance, creating quite a crazy scene. Among the fans were girls who couldn't stop crying when they saw him from their excitement; however the thing that made Steven the happiest was the appearance of Michael Ku and his wife to support him giving him quite a surprise.

Steven headed out to the mainland on the 4th August on a promotional tour for his first album to be sold in China. The tour will be for 12 days and the first stop was Zhuhai, where he arrived on the 5th and stopped off at the International Plaza for an autograph session. Although it has been raining constantly in Zhuhai for several days, the fans' enthusiasm was not dampened and 8000 of them piled in to wait for him, needing many security officers and metal barriers to keep them at bay.

When Steven appeared, all the fans suddenly screamed out and went wild, non-stop calling his name. When Steven was singing on the stage, there were many dangerous scenes beneath and he was constantly warning his fans to be careful. After singing, he offered autographs to his fans who instantly went to buy his album for him to sign, causing every record in the shopping centre to be snapped up in record time. Maybe because they were too excited in seeing their idol, some fans burst into fits of tears. Finally Steven left after two hours of signing autographs but many fans still lingered afterwards, not wanting to leave.

Later, Steven mentioned he was worried about the weather affecting the event, but luckily it held out. About the fans' response, he said that he never expected such a hearty welcome, making it almost like a mini-concert. He says that to see this kind of response to his promotion is like a major confidence injection. However the happiest thing for him was the appearance of Michael Ku [Em: Michael is a songwriting genius.] and his wife to support him. He said: "Seeing an old friend on the mainland, it was such a surprise!"

Steven says that Michael and his wife came especially to support him, saying he got to know the couple not long after entering the industry and Michael had written a song in his new album called "Forever Promise". Michael says that he is very pleased at Steven's success because he has used ten years hard work to achieve this and he goes on to praise Steven's singing talent, saying he deserves every bit of his current success.

2010.8.1.Fans sending off Steven at Sydney Airport tudou link

Went to lunch with friend, after which went down to ground floor and happened upon Steven in the abalone/seafood store buying abalone. Said to friend that today is a lucky day, should buy lotto. After some hesitation, decided to approach Steven. Asked if he would give me 7 numbers. Steven was taken aback. “What 7 numbers?" I guess he must have thought I was asking for his phone numbers. My friend said 7 numbers to buy lotto. Steven was totally ‘defeated’, turned to Hillman and other staff and said “They are asking me for numbers to buy lotto!” And they all laughed.

Putting on a righteous face, Steven said sternly: “No way, I can’t be an enabler of long term gambling ma.”
But then after a while, he relented: Ok, I’ll give you one number, 26.”
I quipped: "Your birthday bor."
He said: How did you know?
I said: Haha! Of course, I know lo. 10.26 ma. :loool:

At the airport, Steven asks the fans who among them leaked the news about him buying abalone and saying Steven is so rich to have spent so much money on it. Luckily for the culprit, she was not among them.  Haha!  in my previous post I intentionally omitted the total amount Steven paid for the abalone (the blogger had disclosed that info on her post) I thought I'll give Steven that privacy. The blogger was the very same person who wrote with relish about them requesting Steven for lucky numbers.

More random Steven sightings in Sydney.

During afternoon tea, saw Xiao Xuan Zi ~~ so handsome and low key. (note: Xiao Xuan Zi = character in DOMD)  Saw him when having afternoon tea, saw him walked inconspicuously into the restaurant; not many people noticed him. Super handsome, and looks very young; looks at most 28 years old, not at all like someone approaching 40. Not snobbish at all. When departing, he smiled and waved in acknowledgment at those who recognized him. Took a snapshot but it didn't turn out well because the whole encounter was too sudden.
